Ring. Ring. Ring.

Her eyes snapped open, the daylight seeping through the blinds hurt her eyes as she shot up from the bed. “Oh you’ve got to be kidding me!” It wasn’t like her to sleep late, but the sun that now hung high above the clouds gave her the hint that it was not that early in the morning. Even so, she pushed herself out of bed, barely caring for the fact she wasn’t exactly fully dressed, racing down the stairs to grab the phone with the ear-piercing ringtone. “Evelyn speaking.” She held the phone to her ears, unable to keep the morning annoyance out of her tone. “Ms. Montague,” Merely by the first two words the man spoke, she was already developing a bad feeling on the purpose of this call, “I would like to give you a reminder that you and Mr. Montague are cordially invited to the family dinner hosted at—“ She set down the phone quickly, not even waiting for the man to finish as she turned her head toward the clock. 10:50. She could not even begin to comprehend how she had forgotten about the family dinner, but then again, a lot of things were on her mind at the present time.

“Jace!” Grabbing a glass of water, Evelyn yelled up the stairs in the empty house for her brother. She had no doubt he wasn’t even up yet, not merely because no one answered the phone call, but also because her brother would not wake up early for the life of him. “Jace! Out of bed. Right now!” Knock. Knock. Knock. It took several minutes of frantic knocking for her to realize that that was completely futile.

“Go away, Ev.” A hint of smile formed on her lips as her brother hollered from his room, her head shaking in exasperation as she bent down, taking the hairpin from her messy curls and pressing it into the lock. He should have known that locks were not going to work within this household. Without too much of a fuss, the door opened with a squeak and she stomped in, pulling the blankets off of her little brother with one swift pull. “It’s family dinner today,” She announced with a hint of apathy. Truly, she did not want to go, given that she wasn’t exactly part of the family, nor did she want to be. However, her brother was, and she was not going to let him bail on another one of his family gatherings, “Come on. I’ll get you your clothe—“ She turned with a glance toward her silent brother, raising an eyebrow. Was he even listening? The answer came to her as no. Rolling her eyes, she walked forward and with a slight bend of her hand, the cold cup of water she planned on drinking trickled onto her brother’s neck. “Do not make me go for the ice bucket, Jace.” Even though she was literally a few months older than him, it always seemed as if she has taken on their mother’s role.

Tell me again why I’m even here…

Evelyn put a hand over her now brushed-over curls, her olive green eyes scanning with boredom over the magnificent view of the household that now seemed so dull to the girl that has seen perhaps a little too much of this pompous scene. By then, she has already lost her brother in the crowd, all chatting haughtily over some superficial topics. While Evelyn has always taken much delight in party-planning for the households, she truly never took much enjoyment in attending it. “Evelyn!” Nope. Nope. Nope. At the sound of her name, she wasn’t going to stick around to find out who had called her name, whom she was going to place bets on to be a “cousin” she probably did not even know the name of. With a duck of her head, she mingled into the crowd of “family members”, the long sea-green dress trailed behind her as she took quick strides toward the large ballroom.

Not many people threw her much more than a sideways glance as she brushed past. The girl's dress wasn't too extravagant, especially within this crowd. However, what was strange was simply the thin book she held in her hand, titled as Shakespeare's play "Macbeth", much different to the glasses of wine and cocktails held in the hands of others. The sound of laughter and conversations were deafening in her ears, and perhaps words could not begin to describe her current exasperation at the entire situation. Seeing that her brother was definitely out of sight, she headed toward the windows up the stairs that separated the world of freedom from the household of smoke and perfume.

And I'm gone. Taking a hold of the handles of the window, she turned it slight as to discreetly open it to the cool night air. It wasn't going to be hard to make that jump, but the dress might hinder a soft landing. "Evelyn Montague. Oh... Perfect. She did not even need to turn her head to know one of the elder members of the family stood behind her with a meaningful glare. "Just getting some fresh air.. Sir. And it's Evelyn May. However, the girl was smart enough not to mention that in front of her family members, giving a hurried curtsy before she bounded down the stairs. And my plan has crashed and burned. With a long sigh, she once again maneuvered herself through the crowd, making sure to grab a small cup of ice cream from the waiter's tray along the way.

This is going to be a long night...
