'We're done eating anyway, aren't we, James?' I said, standing up, his hand enclosed in mine. He nodded, admittedly lost into the swift course of things. 'Would you like me to show you my small library? I didn't have much room, but I did get to pack some of my favourites. And I could have you read the story I told you about- you're the only one who could appreciate it anyway.' The last sentence was almost a hiss as I glanced at Alec. James was only too eager to comply and separate our little group. 'I'd love to, of course. Lead the way.' I grinned at him and led him out of the kitchen, a hand against the small of his back, pushing him gently, 'If you would give me just a minute, love, I'll be right with you. I need but a moment with my beloved step-brother.' James' look was confused, but he stepped out of the kitchen, following Christy. As soon as they were gone, I slammed the door shut behind them and pressed my back against it, blocking Alec's way. My arms crossed over my chest.
