Footnotes

  1. Port = door way, or window, or anything that can be swam through. The ports sticking into the air are chimneys - to a human. To a mermaid such as Cordelia, they're simply really weird tunnel ports that serve absolutely no purpose.

All the world was water, and here Cordelia was on the edge of Land. There was only one continent on this entire planet. It was called Land, and rightfully so, as that's exactly what it was. Legged beings occupied Land- but not all of it. In fact, there was one spot that was more of a once was than anything else - and that interested Cordelia greatly. Before she hatched (from an egg, of course) the sea levels of the planet had risen. Some blamed the presence of the leggers, but Cordelia had never met a legger and wasn't entirely interested to do so.

Instead, Cordelia preferred to explore the ruins of a small town which had slipped into the sea all those years ago. There was a lot of stuff to find from the leggers. They didn't leave everything behind, but the architecture was fascinating. For most of her life Cordelia lived in caves around undersea magma vents. The magma was harvested and sculpted into walls and other things. Simple. Drippy. Round.

Here, however, in the drowned town, there were quite a lot of angles. So many angles, and squares, and rectangles, and triangles, and all sorts of shapes Cordelia was vastly unfamiliar with. Amazingly fascinated by. A shrieking laugh pierced the water and echoed off the walls as she flipped circles through a mostly complete housing structure. It was large, and had so many ports to go through. Large ports, small ports, and one very square port which lead straight to the surface. Cordelia found this port, shimmying up and popping up into air.

From up here in the air, the view was interesting to say the least. Gentle waves lapped towards the marshy shore, and many more square ports stuck out of the water into the air.
