Mel grunted, pushing her messy hair out of her face as she continued to drag her million-pound suitcase through campus.
"Take the later flight he says," the brunette grumbled to herself, fixing the strap of one of her duffels bag for the fourth time in fifteen minutes. "Didn't think the pilot would have an allergic reaction to his copilot's lunch, did he?" She stopped a moment to give her poor arms a break, mentally cursing herself for listening to her father, and looked around at the school grounds. Most people seemed to have already moved in and were now leaving their dorms to find friends or food. Mel sighed in annoyance at her lateness and continued her trek to her dorm. She was stopped by several people on her journey -a few from her track team, a professor from the previous year, a couple of class friends, another Portuguese student, a freshman looking for directions- before finally stopping at her building with a relieved huff.
Getting her bags to her room was not as hard as anticipated. By the time Mel was at her door, room 202, she was winded, but not completely spent. Looking at the door, Mel saw a note stuck to it reading, 'Going to meet a friend by the fountains to get dinner. Come join us if you’re free!' She grinned to herself, knowing it was from Esme. After a long break, Mel was excited to see her friend and didn't want to waste time unpacking all of her things -knowing her habits, she probably wouldn't be fully unpacked for weeks to come anyway. Upon opening the door to their room, Mel smiled to herself seeing that Esme had clearly felt the same. Although she wouldn't go looking in any of Esme's personal things, Mel could tell from the odd bra strap, pant cuff, and sweater sleeve hanging out of Esme's dresser that the girl had probably thrown her clothes in there and rushed out.
Knowing that she was already later in moving in than most people, Mel took little time unpacking a few essential toiletries, picking out a new outfit, fixing her makeup a bit, and hurrying out the door. She was nearly to the fountains when she spotted a group of people in which she recognized a couple of girls. She was about to stop to to say hi but noticed that they seemed to be in a conversation with a boy and girl that she had never seen. Not wanting to get into a conversation and miss seeing Esme, Mel decided not to go over to them. However, she made a mental note of the boy's handsomeness, and continued walking with the intention of introducing herself later if she saw him again.
When she finally came to the fountains, it took little time for Mel to find Esme. The stylish "New York" vibe that Esme gave off always made Mel feel slightly like a slob, but she'd gotten used to it and found that Esme was a valuable friend to have when it came to style. Talking to Esme was Jasper, Esme's good friend. Although Mel had never actually met Jasper face-to-face, she had seen pictures of him and had spoken with him on the phone several times when she was in the room with Esme. He was seemed like a fun kid, and Mel was surprised to see him here, not knowing that he would be here this semester. Esme must have forgotten to mention that.
In any case, Mel grinned slyly to herself as she came around behind Esme. She was about to surprise the girl when Jasper suddenly grabbed her wrist and began to pull her away. Surprised, Mel halted for a moment before jogging to catch up. They were still walking, Esme behind Jasper when Mel stood on her toes and quickly wrapped Esme in a bear hug from behind, chuckling happily before releasing the girl and spinning Esme to face her and give her a proper hug. Pulling away from the hug, Mel held Esme's shoulder's for a bit longer and smiled. "Olá, bonita. It's so good to see you. " Mel laughed happily again and looked over Esme appraisingly. "Você é bonita," she said happily, assuring Esme that she was, in deed, beautiful.
Happy with finally seeing Esme, Mel turned to where Jasper had stopped to talk to someone and noticed that that someone was the boy that she had seen with the girls she knew from before. Mel turned her head to look at Esme and raised an eyebrow as if to say 'who's that?'.
