She looked Adeline up and down as they walked upstairs to her bedroom. She looked healthy. She had put on a little bit of weight, maybe, but she was still stick thin. Had she been much thinner in the spring? Sydney normally thought of herself as being an observant person, and she was. How had she missed the signs? She had asked herself those kinds of questions countless times this summer, but it was hard not to run through the spiel in her head again, now that Adeline was standing right in front of her. She casually took a seat on one of the white chairs by the window once they reached the girls bedroom, and she smiled. It fell comfortably into place on her face, but it wasn't one that was necessarily there out of pure joy. In a twisted way, Sydney surely did like the feeling of power and control that this conversation came with. She had the upper hand, and Adeline had to answer to her, not the other way around. Typically, that wasn't something that Sydney liked exploiting when it came to her friends, but she felt like it was only fair given the lack of transparency, and in Sydney's opinion, disrespect and disregard that Adeline had shown their friendship this summer. "Did it only take a summer away for you to forget that I hate waiting?" Sydney said, breaking the silence that she felt had existed for a few seconds too long once they reached her bedroom. "One can only hope that you didn't forget how much I hate liars, too." She was going to give Adeline one chance to be honest with her. She owed her that much, at least, she decided.
