|| The Ballad of Mona Lisa|| Panic! At the Disco ||

"Why do you wear the mask?" A young demon girl asked, looking at him. The demon shivered, keeping the mask on his face. "I'm ugly. I don't want anyone to see." He turned away, not used to this. The angels gave it to him, saying that it took years off their life to be forced to look at him. "I'm sure you have a nice face. My name is Lise!" The white haired demon held her hand out with a grin. "You'll let me see some day, okay?" He whimpered, not wanting to. Everyone was always scared away by his face. It was better to wear the mask.

"You filthy creatures! You sinners! Get back to praying!" A young demon whimpered, kicked in the back of the head until he was forced into a prayer position again. How long has it been since he was able to move? What even was his name anymore? "Jaden..." He whispered. He couldn't forget his name, he wasn't allowed to forget his name. "Shut up and keep praying!" The angels growled, kicking him again. "You sinful creatures. We'll teach you all how to be righteous. Under the will of King Anael, the King of Heaven, you'll all learn the path of forgiveness." For weeks, the children were forced to pray. They were given an awful broth and were only allowed out to relieve their bladders once a day. The angels would round them up and take them to the cleansing repository so the children would have to relieve themselves at the same time.

King Anael of Heaven made a new proclamation. In order to end the suffering and hatred between demons and angels, the captured demons from the last Holy War when King Satan of Hell attacked, would be made to breed. Their children would be raised among angels, taught proper angel etiquette and learn the sins of their race. The children would interface with angels and angels would have a chance to get to learn about demons and befriend them. It was a program designed to end war, but the angels put in charge of the program only wanted to get their revenge in for all the friends they lost during the 8th Holy War.

"This generation is a failure." The angels would say behind their closed doors. "They sit and pray but they're still just as sinful as ever. Look at how they breed, look at how filthy they are." Select females were taken from the praying room in order to create more demons, a second generation of children to be made to pray. A demon with white and red hair was dragged away today as the angels took away the females. "Congratulations, Lise." The angels mocked, picking her up by the snake-shaped tentacle attached to her back. "Your results are in. You've proven to be very fertile. You will give more demons the gift of life."

Jaden whimpered, watching Lise be taken away. "N-no, don't hurt her!" One angel ripped the mask off his face, revealing his ugly horrible face to everyone. Jaden always wore a mask because he was ashamed of his white eyes, of his misshapen mouth. He was an ugly, ugly demon child. "She's nice! Don't take her!" Lise was the only one of the children who would play with him during weekends when praying time ended. She was the only one who didn't hate him or try to steal his food. He let out a scream, covering his horrible face, his disgusting face. What kind of friend would curse their friend to see something so ugly? "I think it's nice." Lise said, her voice warm but even Jaden could hear the trembling within. "You have a cute, unique face." The angels laughed and jeered, not caring, not caring at all.

It was only years later when the 9th Holy War began and King Satan tore down the Center for Demon Angel Peace. "Young demons." His voice boomed. "Do you still have the will to fight within you? You demons who were born in angel lands, and taught angel rules?" Most of the demons cowered and shivered, hiding in corners. They did not want to fight. They did not want to do anything. They had no pride in their hearts, no will in their souls. They were like limp wet noodles, unable to change anything but be eaten. "You, boy. There's a look in your eyes that I like." King Satan knelt down and grinned, the dragon knights pulling Jaden out from among the crowd. "There's a look in your eyes burning with enough hatred to burn the world away with your fires."

"Please." Jaden whispered. "Kill all of the angels." King Satan's eyes twinkled. He picked Jaden up and then grinned. "Perfect." Jaden did not understand the searing pain through his whole body. He did not understand why he went limp and could no longer move. "You'll be my wonderful sacrifice." King Satan stole his soul's energy then put him inside a cage for his dragon knights to carry around. "I'll use you to boost my powers." Borrowing Jaden's strength, King Satan's powers increased and he bathed the valley in a sea of fire. The angel-raised demons were rounded up and put in chains. "We'll teach them how to properly be demons. We'll beat their demonic instincts back into them." King Satan cackled, patting his belly in triumph.

After being dragged into Hell, Jaden was locked in a room. He didn't know for how long he was in this room, but only sometimes would he be taken out in order to be used as a power battery for Satan to kill others. If he spoke, he was tortured. If that wasn't enough, the other angel-raised demons would be tortured for him. It wasn't long until Satan was able to realize that Lise was the one he loved, and so she became a torture receptible. Her and her clutch of eggs would be flayed mercilessly until Lise did not know how to live without being in pain. "It's okay. I'm weak and useless." Lise said with a squeak. "So please don't cry, Jaden." But he cried anyways, because he knew it was his fault.

There was a knock on the door one day. Was it food again? Jaden stared into the darkness, wondering what food there would be today. "Hello. My name is Lucifer Vacivus, and I'm the leader of the Pride Tribe." A strange demon appeared, grinning. "You're Jaden, one of the angelborn, right? You've been used as a battery, but now it's time." Lucifer promised freedom. He promised so much. "I can already sense how strong you are. You'll help me, and I'll grant you your wish." His wish was obvious, wasn't it? "I'll be one of your Barons." Jaden cried, reaching out for his new master. "If you'll make Lise a Baron too, I'll help you take down King Satan!"

After the rebellion was won and Lucifer Vacivus sat on Hell's throne, Jaden became Baron Messiah, the Baron of Sacrifice. His mask melded to his face, his face becoming blank and nothing. It was better this way, this way no one would be cursed to see it again. Baron Messiah went to find his one and only friend. Lise was laying down, shivering in pain. After being made to bear so many children, after being tortured for years, her brain developed a problem. She was constantly reliving the pain over and over again, with no relief. She was dying too. "Let me die." Lise whimpered. "It hurts so bad." He couldn't let her go. He needed to save her. "You're a Baron now." Messiah whispered, reaching for his friend. Lise transformed, her many children and her uncountable eggs morphed into snakes, latching onto her body. Even so, she was still in pain, wasn't she? "I see, how unfortunate." King Lucifer said, with a pitying shake of his head. "She'll be in pain forever." In the end, after so many experiments, the only way to give Anguis relief was if she was the one doing the torturing instead. If she wasn't putting her pain onto others, it would always come back.

If Messiah could create a world for demons and only demons, none of this would ever have to happen again. Hatred burned in his eyes, for angels, and for the demon royalty who tossed him and Anguis aside as if they were nothing but old broken toys. They were given small castles in the barren northern corners of Hell and told never to return. One day, Messiah swore, he would get revenge on demon royalty. Not only that, but he would make sure no demon would ever be hurt by another race ever again.

A portal opened and the Glaive of Longinus slashed through it, before being pulled back and slicing apart an enemy from behind using another portal. Silence fell to her knees, breathing hard. Messiah was on the rooftop, that was the only thing that made sense. They searched the entire floor, and they weren't able to find any hint of him. The minor demons that surrendered said that he left the fortress already, but Messiah wouldn't just leave and let Anguis die on her own. Silence groaned, stumbling through the darkness, leaving a trail of blood with each step she took. She heard another enemy approaching and she spun and cut through them with her glaive. "Pray's... down there... somewhere..." Silence whispered to herself. It was too late now, Silence was too far up to go back down.

She heard footsteps rapidly approaching. Silence spun around, gritting her teeth, swinging her glaive. It clashed against what felt like a sword and she jumped backwards to dodge a counterstrike. "Silence! Relax, it's just me." Chris's voice floated on through, and he sounded exhausted and weary. "Chris? Aren't you supposed to be up top with Cress?" The fact that he was here and no one else gave Silence a pitched painful feeling in her gut. "Don't worry about that for now." He said, a hand reaching out to take Silence's shoulder. "I'm going after Messiah. He's on the rooftop, Shiro told me where he was waiting." Silence nodded, figuring that made sense. They were able to save Shiro at least, that was good, right? "I'm coming too. Just lead the way, Chris." She followed the sound of his footsteps, using them to guide her as she limped after him.

The duo silently made their way up the halls and corridors, aiming to reach the top. There was a thud then, was something going on? "Flo!" Chris cried out, his voice startling Silence for a brief moment. "Where is she?" Silence asked, clutching her glaive painfully. "Right here, Flo, you look like hell, are you..." Flo was bleeding out badly and she fell down trying to walk. "Echo's... up there. I can... sense her." Her words were slow, slurred. Was she having trouble thinking? "We're going to go kill Messiah and save Echo. Flo, you look like death. Do you want to stay here and wait for us?" Flo grimaced, pushing herself back up off the floor. "I have... to help her." She'd lost so much blood, her head was dizzy and it was hard to think.

.....................

"It's almost there." Messiah whispered as Echo writhed on the ground in her stroke. "Our dream's almost accomplished." Anguis smiled at him, but even he could see how tired she was, how exhausted she was. "Know your place, Doll King. You're my Apostle. I could give you the order to kill Echo if I wish and you wouldn't be able to resist.' He had complete control over her, what Doll wanted didn't matter at all. "But I wouldn't do that. Once Nova realizes how the Tower Society's been controlling and manipulating her, she'll be free. I'm giving her the keys to that freedom." If need be, he could fix her time and undo any damage caused by the current stroke.

"Please." Doll pleaded. "She only just stopped looking at me with hatred in her eyes." Doll just wanted the happy future where her three sisters could be together in harmony to return. But it seemed like Baron Messiah was never going to let that happen again. "Echo and I have a lot in common." Messiah said calmly, looking with sympathy at the white haired demon. "We've only ever been used by everyone around us." But now he would save her. He would set her free. The problem in her head, he could fix it in a heart beat. All he wanted was for Nova to accept his help and join his side. There was no hatred, no anger. He simply saw his past self in Baroness Nova, and he wanted to save her.

Time froze. The next moment Doll was holding her wrist. Three people arrived when time became back to normal. Silence swung her glaive at Anguis, following the wound of the snakes. Ever since Wicked blew herself up Silence hadn't been able to see anything but faint colors and shapes. "Your contract's gone." Flo said, nearly falling over. "Kill them both." Doll was free now, Flo removed it entirely. She crawled to Echo's side as Chris went over to Doll. Echo's memories had all returned, the worst case scenario was here.

"I'm sorry, Echo." Flo whispered, desperately maintaining consciousness. She knew she was dying, she was too badly hurt to keep going anymore. "For controlling you, for using you. But now, you'll be free." She used her powers, shattering the contract between Echo and Christopher. She even used her powers to make Echo's Tower Brace vanish without a trace. With the last of her energy she once again mended Echo's brain, reversing the stroke completely. "Get - get out of here, Echo! Run away! Don't look back! Th-this is the freedom you've always wanted! Go!" Unable to stand, Flo fell on her face, all her power and energy gone. Her eyes fluttered shut, wanting to see Echo one last time before she went on for freedom.
