Meg looked up at the sound of the chime rang through the house, pulling herself out from behind the toilet and sitting back on her haunches. She let out a breath, closing her eyes and letting the project director’s clipped speech wash over her. Things were getting started sooner than she had anticipated; doubtless Yonder Wonder was eager to get moving, but Meg had assumed they would at least allow a day or two for the participants to acclimate to life under the same roof.

Still, a summons was a summons, so Meg picked herself up off the floor, setting the scrub brush and spray bottle on the bathroom counter before pulling off her latex gloves and apron. The head maid would’ve scolded her for not putting them away properly, but five minutes was five minutes, so she could always finish up after they finished whatever the project had planned for them today. She checked her appearance in the mirror quickly, straightening her shirt before heading out in the hall, taking her jacket off the doorknob as she passed.
