Bio
Dani grew up with a dad in the Navy and a stay at home mother who produced a son a year after Dani was born. Since her dad was in the Navy, her mother became the head of the household. He was gone enough that Dani and her brother grew up without much of a bond with him. Their mother was the only real permanent being in their lives, especially since they moved every few years. There was no real chance at making long term friendships. Dnai and her brother were used to it though. They didn’t mind their dad being gone all the time either. He would yell in their faces and whip them with his belt if they got in trouble while he was home. They preferred their mother’s form of punishment.
Their dad finally retired when Dani was 16. That was when things began to change. They had moved for the last time. Their dad was in the process of looking for a new job to pay for the new house they bought. That meant he was home all the time though. Dani’s mother thought it would be a good thing to have another parent helping out with the kids, but it turned into a power struggle. Their dad realized what little say he had in the household and it began to bother him. That led to fights between the two parents. Dani would try to get out of the house as much as possible. She made two friends from her new school and something clicked right when she met them that made them all very close friends. Hanging out with them helped her keep some of her sanity while her parents learned how to deal with each other again. Her poor brother was left to find his own friends and figure something out himself.
Dani found herself staring at edge of the bottom of her bed. There was a shadow there that seemed darker and more defined than the rest of the shadow of her bed. She couldn’t stop staring at it. Everything feels off… Her eyes looked over to the glass bottle again. Maybe it’s the alcohol. The odd shadow was still held her interest, even if it wasn’t real. It seemed to move a little. She watched. There was a dim green glow at the edge. The green glow turned into two bright green eyes, still glowing dimly. A small gasp escaped Dani as she continued to stare at the shadow that appeared to have come to life underneath her bed. How long has that been like that? She blinked. The shadow moved forward the slightest bit. Dani was silent. She didn’t know what to do or say. All she wanted to do was watch and wait. The eyes in the shadow gave off the impression of sadness and being helpless. She paused the music so she could hear if it made any noise. The shadow was silent. “Hello?” she said. Her curiosity was overruling everything else in her. Her lack of fear surprised her a little, but she didn’t think much of it. Something was communicated to her without words and she automatically knew what it was the shadow wanted. It needs blood. Without thinking, she grabbed a small razor blade from underneath a small bear figurine in her room and slid it down her arm. It stung a little, which caused her to clench her teeth, but she didn’t let it stop her. Blood welled up from the cut and began to run down her arm. She quickly extended it toward the shadow, which slowly inched out of hiding and expressed uncertainty with its eyes before allowing itself to consume her offering.
It took a little more than she expected and it even started to worry her a little as she felt it feeding off of her. What have I done? Just as she started to worry, she felt something warm on her arm. She couldn’t see what the shadow was doing until it slowly pulled away. It had sealed the wound. She felt a sudden bit of fear creep into her. What is this thing? What am I doing? What’s going to happen now? The shadow’s eyes grew brighter. Dani watched. Her entire body was still. Anyone who went through what she had just done would have known the bond created between a starving creature and the foolish being who saved it. It would be with her for the rest of her life to protect her and she would devote her life to feeding it. She could feel its thoughts and words. Nothing could ever compare to it. Nothing of this world anyway...
