a character in “Avion Divided”, as played by Paradigm

Description

Image

Rubius posesses every trait that your typical Wizard might posess: the clothing, the staff, the knowledge, the beard, the hat - though he is no wizard. Rather he is an intellectual, a scholar, and a historian whos knowledge is deep rooted in Stormhale. He is highly respected and revered within Stormhale as perhaps one of the most intellectually astute beings to ever walk next to King Aelus. Physically he towers over most humans standing at an unusual six feet five inches, though this has not stretched him thin as he keeps in very well shape. His skin is caucasian and his hair is snow white, though not from aging rather from birth.

What is your character's name? Rubius Makarrah
What do the locals call them? Scholar Makarrah
How old are they? Late 40's
What is their profession? Scholar, Historian, Linguist
In short, what characteristics do they posess? Rubius is a mysterious man. He speaks mainly in poetry, metaphors, or in old stories when he's trying to convey a meaning. This is a result of his extroardinary intelligence, he knows many languages and an even greater number of stories by the ancient races that contrived them. He's somewhat of a loner, although he does not mind taking a stroll with somebody, he isn't antisocial. Rubius usually doesn't act out of place, nor is he a violent person at heart, although there are doubts among society about this. He is not mentally stable, as you might say. Certain things can set him off into an outburst. Rubius is loyal to his friends, and their causes, and gives them his undivided attention. He is always there to help, and is not afraid to accept death before dishonour for a noble cause. He will not disown you. He will not abandon you. He will not fail you. He would prove to be a worthy ally.

Perhaps Rubius' most notable trait is his mental stance on the Magi stones. He is is a proud Stormhale citizen and close to King Aelus, and can even serve as an advisor to Aelus at certain times, however he has very different views on the Magi stones. Rubius believes they should be kept, and contained for study, not destroyed. Rubius is fascinated with the idea of magic and does not think the magi stones in particular caused the dimensional rift.

A summary of their history would be... Rubius grew up on his own. He had no mother, no father, no relatives to take him in, not even foster parents. He remembers nothing of the first fifteen years of his life; which is unusual because he has extroardinary memory. He bought a house with [stolen] money in Stormhale when he was seventeen and has lived within Stormhale walls ever since. There was this urge deep in his bones that needed attending to, though - he felt the unescapable desire to research the ancients. He bought books, researched ancient civilizations, ancient languages, ancient practices and beliefs, ancient magics, ancient fighting arts. Everything ancient - he loved it. He hoped that, somehow, he would find what he was searching for although he did not know exactly what that was. Then one day he had found it - the magi stones. He had stumbled across a theory that there was a vault full of them that eminated pure magical essence. Immediately he had devled deeper and deeper into their mysterious history. Later, he bought his own "wizards tower" so you might say, just outside of Stormhale. This time, it wasn't with stolen money, it was on sales from books he had written on the Magi Stones. His profession was that of an author, he wrote many books on ancient civilizations and their practical modern teachings as well as the Magi Theory(a book focused directly around the magi stones). Today he remains a highly respected figure within Stormhale both as an ancient historian and as a scholar.

What equipment do they carry? Generally speaking Rubius is a pacifist. However, in times of crisis he will not hesitate to inflict serious damage with his stave skills. His stave is caked with extremely sharp metal spikes which can easily penetrate any hide or flesh. Aside from this he carries nothing but the original copy of the Magi Theory book that he authored.
Anything else? No.

So begins...

A gentle breeze slowly traveled across the barren seemingly never-ending plains. The only movement for miles was that of the swaying overgrown grass. Various trinkets and glass ornaments swayed in the wind as they hung on silk ropes matching the movements of the grass. The only sound filling the air was that of pleasent windchimes. The chimes were deep and powerful, but they were still easy on the ears and inviting. The sun beat down harshly upon the landscape and the tall and powerful stone tower that stood in the midst of the sea of grass.

"Ah, Avion how you've done me in. Mistreated and beaten up you have left me- even moreso your beloved servants and mistresses," an old and weak voice spoke softly. The voice came from a bearded man who stood on the top of a staircase in front of the tower. The staircase was part of the tower, it was connected to the only door into the structure. It consisted of only seven steps, each a different height and length all inscribed with mysterious designs. The figure stood holding a dusty tome in hand which was opened to the exact center pages.

"You've beaten me down, worn me away with your magi. Vast are the planes of Avion, even more so the magi within. Those who harness the magi power must first harness their own will," the voice continued. The scholar was not speaking to anybody, in fact he was not particularly aware that he was speaking at all. The old man had a tendency to speak while reading scriptures and tomes. "I apologize, I appear to have been-"

Rubius paused before taking in the realization that he was all alone. He had fooled himself into believing that there were others around. Perhaps his old mind was beginning to finally take a turn for the worse. He was a wise man indeed, but old, and as with all old men their intelligence soon begins to fog and haze.

I wonder where those knights are, the man thought to himself. He was sent a letter describing a handful of knights that were to venture his way so they could travel to the College of the Ancients. Ah, the college... it was an intriguing construct to Rubius. He had never traveled there, but always wanted to. Oh, just the thought of the knowledge contained within their walls! And even more, the knowledge contained within the tomes discovered in that vault! The thought alone made Rubius grinning with joy. His passion was the ancients, he wanted to know everything about them.

Perhaps I should travel to meet them at the highway.. to save time. The thought lingered in his mind for quite some time.

A very unusual tingling sensation crept down Rubius' spine. Something, though unknown to him what, was itching him to stay at the tower. A spirit, perhaps, or a soul trying to persuade him. It was probably nothing, his old mind probably just playing tricks on him, but he had decided to stay.

Rubius walked slowly back to his tower. He creeped slowly up the seven steps, opened the large elegant wooden door and entered the tower. Immediately the scent of incense had blasted his nostrils. The smell was soothing, enlightening and inviting. There was also another stench though it could not be pinpointed. Rubius took a deep breath and walked over to a red chair and sat down on it. He didn't bother to close his door; there wasn't a soul for miles anyway.

An unusual feeling lingered in the back of his mind. It was somewhat of a sense, not a feeling. He could sense war. Chaos. Pandemonium. Avion was ripping apart at the seams, literally, and he could feel it. Rubius didn't like it either but what is inevitable is inevitable, and this is something he has came to accept. He could but only await the day the Stormhale Guard clashed with Valtrennian forces.

"Ah, visitors!" Rubius said aloud to himself as he heard the beating of an extraordinarily large pair of wings. The man stood up and shuffled over to his door rather quickly. "Good evening, good evening travel-" Rubius stopped himself to correct his mistake, "knights!" The man let out a rather hearty and jolly laugh that was probably unusual for someone of his old age.

A quick observation led him to believe they might not all be nights, namely Zechariah. Something gave Rubius an air of familiarity about Zechariah though what it was he did not know. Perhaps he had seen him somewhere before. Or perhaps it was simply Rubius' old mind failing once again. Something else, maybe?

"Come in, come in please! Do make yourselves at home so we may discuss the task at hand in comfort!"

Rubius stood aside with his arm outstretched to signal them to come in and sit down on couches. There were three couches in total in his tower, all made of a fine white wood with red silk cushions.

Ever quiet and driven to go with the flow of things, Lanna had waited silently alongside Zechariah, happy to let him ramble on as they watched the sun drift lower in the sky. She did not realize how quickly the change of altitude, having traveled by such unfamiliar means, had exhausted her, and she felt barely awake as the armored woman from earlier approached. Again, she gave Lanna the impression she questioned something, a sense of caution in her gaze despite her politeness. Speaking of politeness, Zechariah's ability to be gentlemanly had caught Lanna off-guard when they had landed, but she was glad for the display as he helped her climb down from the great eagle's back.

Though slowly growing tired, Lanna felt a buzz of excitement once more as the old scholar introduced himself. A slight smile showed on her face, eagerness to hear what he had to tell them overcoming her. As he signaled them into his home, Lanna allowed the others to step in before her, stopping briefly to speak in her soft voice.

"It is an honor to meet such a man of wisdom. Thank you for your hospitality." She bowed slightly, a lifetime of being a lady long before being a traveling warrior showing in her actions, and then she joined the others inside.

Zechariah was not used to couches, but he sat in one, legs crossing like he would when sitting on the ground of the forest. There was much about the lives of non-hunters he had forgotten, especially while staying alive with his sister at Falcon Forest. Now that he is a hunter from Eagle Forest, the man felt he could adapt to his evironment when necessary. He brought out a bag of berries from his belt, holding his hand out for anyone who wanted any. He was accustumed to offering berries, since they are the main sweet food the forest had to offer, and many visitors to Eagle Forest had a sweet tooth.

"Well, Makarrah, you're the boss! What's the scoop on these magi stones people have been talking about?"
