"Didn't they tell us don't rush into things?
Didn't you flash your green eyes at me?
Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds?"
~Taylor Swift,
Wonderland

Image{ FULL NAME }
Makoto "Mako" Katsuragi || Takeshi Katsuragi (Alias)
{ AGE }
21
{ PROFESSION }
Professional grifter; mortorcycle racer; officially unemployed
{ FACE CLAIM }
Deunan Knute, Appleseed Ex Machina || Leo Kliesen, Tekken (Takeshi form)

Image{ HEIGHT }
At 5'2", Makoto is a very small woman in her natural form.

{ WEIGHT }
Mako weighs 110lbs. in her natural form.

{ SCARS }
Mako's natural form has the marks of long-term physical abuse, specifically on her back; however, she often shifts these away as they are unpleasant reminders.

Image{ LIKES }
Mako loves speed, danger, and excitement. She's a first-class adrenaline junkie who is rarely content sitting on her butt not doing anything. It used to be that she satisfied her craving for high-paced action in a smaller way by playing high-action video games and driving a motorcycle; now she's turned her attention to slowly escalating crimes. She loves using her power, and the feeling she gets from being able to be anyone or anything she can imagine.

On a more normal note, Makoto is also a fine connoisseur of internet streaming services, which she uses to watch quite a bit of Japanese animation and American superhero teleevision. She loves cats, and owns one; his name is Cheshire. Makoto likes people, but doesn't trust them.

{ DISLIKES }
Mako hates people prying into her life; she very rarely talks about her past, most especially when pressed, and hates nothing more than anyone insinuating that her past was less than the idyllic picture she paints for others. She hates being bored and idle.

She will respond to any insinuations that she is afraid or cowardly with outright hostility.

{ FEARS }
Despite protestations that she is fearless, Makoto possesses many insecurities, which she suppresses on a constant basis. Most importantly, she fears any and all memories of her real past, and is terrified that her brother is being abused by her family. She's afraid of letting anyone too close to her, and is afraid of being betrayed by others. She's afraid of the past catching up to her, a reason for her never-slows-down reckless behaviour.

Her greatest fear is, awkwardly enough, of being afraid. Something in her psyche violently rebels against the idea, associating fear with weakness. Being weak and helpless are two more fears she has, along with failure and not being able to live up to others' expactations of her, all tied into the same complex. Also related to her past abuse, she's terrified of losing her temper, afraid she'll turn into the person who did this to her.

Most of these fears operate at a subconscious level - Makoto is entirely unaware of them, at least as far as conscious thought goes. The only person she's ever admitted these fears to is Dr. Matsuoka.

Image{ PERSONALITY }
Makoto is a flirty, confident, smart-mouthed and sarcastic young woman who enjoys hanging out around others and talking with people. On the surface, she's generally friendly and personable, if a bit smart-alecky at times. She talks a big talk and seems to be a driven, confident, and often fearless individual. She enjoys flirting with members of the opposite sex and likes taking people off-guard, especially people she dislikes.

As a younger woman, Makoto was often shy and insecure, despite the fact that even now she would rather die than admit to those insecurities. Gaining her powers has helped her paper over those doubts with new layers of false confidence - who has body image issues when you can make yourself look like anyone you want? - and come out of her shell, which probably would help her a little bit more if she actually trusted people and let them into her world.

Makoto has trust issues stemming from unknown sources (see History below), causing her to be an acquaintance to many but true friend to very few (at the current moment, there is only one person she trusts). She uses her shapeshifting ability to pass in any crowd, often taking different shapes or identities each day, now that she's gotten the hang of her new powers. Before her powers, she would adapt herself to be whoever the crowd she was in seemed to want her to be, an adaptive skill she's now taking one step further.

An important aspect of Makoto is her need for thrills and adventure. She lives for, and has always lived for, the next moment of excitement or speed, pushing herself to the next level. She rides a motorcycle instead of driving because it feels more free and alive to her, for example, and she's never one to back down from a challenge, dare, or risk.

Mako often asserts that she is incapable of feeling fear and that she is afraid of nothing, and wholeheartedly believes this to be true (it's not). This belief is central to her worldview - she has an overwhelming need to not be afraid, and to prove to everyone that she is as fearless as she claims.

Image{ HISTORY }
The con woman known as Wonderland was born Makoto Katsuragi to an average family in Japantown, San Francisco and grew up a normal, well-adjusted, happy girl, according to her memories. But like her namesake, Wonderland's full of twists and turns, and her life and memory are completely upside-down. These are the facts that are known for certain:

At the age of sixteen, Makoto was legally emancipated from her family and left home for unknown reasons, at which point she moved into her own apartment and got a job at a local store to pay for her apartment. At one point, becoming ill, she visited a doctor and at that point, her physician realized that there was intense scarring on her back, as though she were whipped or beaten. When asked about these injuries, Makoto admitted that she had no idea that they were even there. This led to an eventual appointment with a psychologist named Dr. Matsuoka, who happens to be the only person in the world Makoto actually officially trusts.

Matsuoka, through several sessions with Makoto, including several she admits to having lost the memory of right after leaving his office, found she had a very strange form of memory loss. Due to trauma in childhood, including her repeated and severe abuse by her father, Makoto's mind broke under the pressure, causing her amnesia of her real past. In its place, her mind constructed a fantasy - one of a happy, loving family. This abuse is also responsible for her claims of being fearless and her reckless behaviour. During these sessions, Makoto often spoke of a younger brother, but Dr. Matsuoka believes that if the boy ever existed at all in a place that wasn't Mako's dreams, he is no longer alive. Mako firmly believes he is still living with her parents. After digging up court records, the psychologist also found that the abuse (though no one except Mako and her family knew how terrible it was) was the reason for Makoto's emancipation (further evidence that the little brother she loves so much is no longer in the picture, if he ever was, as the state would likely have taken him away if that were the case).

A short time ago, Mako lost her job, placing her under incredible amounts of stress, espeically since without income, she had no way to pay her rent or, more important to her, Matsuoka's fee. She turned to a sport she had always admired - racing - and began participating in illegal bike races for money, starting her on a dark path in her life.

Two months ago, Mako fell ill again. When the illness was over, though, it had bestowed on her a gift - the gift to become anyone or anything she could imagine. At first, she thought she was going crazy... but soon she came to realize the truth: she really had these special powers.

Though she's not exactly proud of what she now does to survive, Mako has turned her abilities to good use, becoming a thief and con artist known by the alias of "Wonderland". She doesn't work with any major crime syndicates, though she will work with a team if she absolutely has to. Her cons started out small, as short cons designed to get just what she needed to get by, but using her abilities to trick people and steal gives her a thrill she never had before. She honestly enjoys using her powers.

Strangely, she still lives in her small apartment, despite the fact that she's beginning to amass enough money to easily upgrade her means of living. Instead, most of her take (above and beyond what she needs to pay bills) goes to small luxuries - Netflix, subscriptions to anime websites, video games, the latest crime novels, and so on - and Dr. Matsuoka's fees.

{ POWER }
Mako is a shapeshifter; she can transform into any person or living creature, real or imagined, as long as she can visualize it and its structures properly. While she is, in her own shape, relatively weak, she uses this ability to take on more powerful and combat-ready forms, as well as to infiltrate enemy groups and catch her foes off-guard. One of the specific uses she's put her power to is to make an alternate alias for herself, Takeshi, a male version of herself that she uses to conduct business and go places where women aren't always welcome. Her natural ability is the direct reason for and a great help to her current self-employment as a grifter.

{ STRENGTHS }
Mako's greatest strength is her literally infinite versatility. She can be anyone, anything, needed for a job at any given time, and can fill almost any role in a team, from stealth to overwhelming strength. She could create a new identity almost out of thin air, impersonate a person, be a literal fly on a wall or serve as muscle. Why worry about whether you'll get hurt on a job, for example, when you can turn into a dragon if everything goes south?

Mako's shapeshifting is incredibly flexible, as well - she doesn't have to change her whole body or base her designs off of something she's seen. She can simply make something up wholesale, alter only parts of her body, grow new limbs at will, etc. She's able to heal wounds with this power.

{ WEAKNESSES }
As stated above, Mako's strength is her versatility, but it doesn't come without drawbacks. For starters, her shapeshifting powers do have limits - she can't shapeshift into anything that's not alive, and she can't replicate abilities she doesn't understand. As an example, Mako could probably turn herself into a dragon, it wouldn't be hard, but she couldn't breathe fire, because the methods by which a dragon could reasonably breathe fire without burning itself aren't understood in the modern world. She could physically turn into one of the other mutagen 'victims', but couldn't replicate their power, because she doens't have a fine enough control over her power or understanding of theirs to make it work, except in cases where the mutation is entirely physical (say, wings and the ability to fly).

Secondly, Mako has to abide by the physical limitations of whatever form she ends up in. She might be able to be a strong-but-quick human, but if she turned into a powerfully built, armor-plated dragon, most likely she wouldn't be able to also be extremely fast and agile at the same time. She could become a cheetah to be extremely fast over short bursts, but would have to abide by the fact that cheetahs are not distance runners.

Finally, Mako has one ultimate limitation - her true form. While she can alter it at will, her true human form is still a part of her. If this form is damaged, that damage is permanently a part of that form, and despite her ability to use shapeshifting to 'heal' wounds, fatal wounds are still fatal. Stabbing her through the heart or shooting her through the head will kill her quite easily, and her natural form is just that of a small, average human woman. The longest Mako can hold a shape is about three days to a week, depending on how complex and thorough the change is, and after returning to her original form, she has to stay that way for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to a full day, again depending on what she was before returning to her true form. She doesn't have to return to her true form in between shifts, but consecutive shifting takes effort, shortening the time she can remain shifted and increasing the amount of time she's required to wait after she returns to her true form.

At the current point in time, Mako has a hard time staying shapechanged during her sleep; if she prepares herself before going to sleep, she can hold a change, but knocking her out unexpectedly or against her will will cause her to change back.

So begins...

Shadow Isle Federal Penitentiary. Built upon an island off the coast of New York City, it had been created to house the extremely dangerous criminals, insane lunatics and genetically-enhanced mutants that had been unlucky enough to be captured by their Government. This prison was created as an answer to the US’ criminal problems, and was highly regarded as the safest and highly-protected prison in the entire world.

But nothing is safe for ever.

In the dead of the night Police helicopters and speedboats rapidly approached the Shadow Isle, cloaked in midnight darkness. The helicopter searchlights led the way towards the Penitentiary, where smoke rose into the sky from multiple places. The Police were closely flanked by multiple media helicopters owned by different news stations, who were eager to get their hands on a nice, juicy story to fill the ears of their beloved audience with..

But the Police Boats and Helicopters were only carrying the reinforcements, as already on the beach and landing pads were multiple S.W.AT. Teams and American Special Forces units, who were talking to their superiors and team leaders through different radio channels, barking orders at one another and trying to organize a plan while the whole Island went to hell.

The entire Island had erupted into uncontrollable chaos. Fire raged from every window, screams, shouts and laughter burst from every open orifice and multiple explosions had been set off throughout the night. Prisoners had escaped through breaches in the walls and attacked the police officers down on at the beach, causing more injuries to the attacking force. From what the media helicopters can gather from their position, a fair number of inmates, police officers and prison guards had already been killed by multiple things, but all of them killed maliciously and with a clear, cold-blooded intent.

The media helicopters, not wanting to give up despite the obvious danger below them, circled around the Island once more, showing better, more convincing angles with their cameras for the viewers watching at home, who were watching with anxiety and bated breath. This horrific event had caught the eye of the whole nation, and no-one knew what they could do to help. The cameras also show the extensive damage caused by the prisoners and, perhaps, the men or man that had broken into the prison. There are multiple broken walls and windows on the ground floor, as well as more on each floor, as well as lots of fallen debris and wiring coming out of gaping holes.

The whole of Shadow Isle is wrecked, dangerous and too risky to survey.

Back in the air, one media helicopter, hoping for a brilliant picture for their viewers at home, dropped its altitude and hovered too far down into one of the courtyards of the prison, and soon caught the eye of the inmates. The helicopter was then assaulted with bricks, bottles and broken glass, whatever the criminals can get their hands on basically, in an attempt to bring down the helicopter and cause more chaos. The pilot of the vehicle struggled to maintain control of his bird, and the helicopter began to lose altitude and crash towards the ground. The camera team, some of whom had already been seriously injured by the debris thrown at them, threw themselves from the vehicle as crashed down into the shallow water near the beach, most of the being killed from the impact, their bodies strewn around the wreckage in a horrific manner.

Police scrambled to the scene, hoping to rescue the men from the wreckage and the news reporter that was in there as well, but were unable to do so once the wreckage caught fire, leaving the squad of officers to back away as it erupted into flames. The other media helicopters, seeing this disastrous event, began to pull out from the scene, and began to simply commentate on what was happening from a safe distance.

On a particular helicopter that was heading to the one of the prison’s few free landing pads was Commissioner Alan Norman, the Chief of Police at the NYPD. The man was desperately communicating with various S.W.A.T. and Special Forces team leaders to try and maintain a calm situation and transmit orders to them, although some of his orders seemed to be lost in translation and forgotten over the loud explosions and shouting.

A perimeter was already set up around the prison on multiple floors, with S.W.A.T. teams ready to breach the doors and enter the buildings in an attempt to save injured inmates and contain the uncontrollable and mutated ones. Norman stepped off the helicopter in a rush, his trench-coat blowing in the breeze and the wind caused by the helicopter’s rotor blades, and looked around the scene. The reinforcement helicopters he had brought with him were now in position, and with his word, began to rappel more Special Forces teams into the prison, whilst S.W.A.T. burst through the doors and began to clear the buildings room by room.

This was a defining moment in America’s history for years to come, the moment where the world first saw those that would become…
