Description

Kana Gotou

Image

Age: 20

Height: 160 cm

Weight: 48.5 kg

Power: Kana has control over water in general. However, she's the only living person known to also manipulate blood, though she still can't regenerate it faster to match. By using the blood of creatures she's... ahem, "sacrificed", instead of having to lose her own, she also takes on some of that creature's physical and instinctive traits to properly utilize (and actually use) the blood. Having used many animals, it's difficult to tell if she's still totally human.

Personality: "Curious" and "analytical" are the best words to describe her, but she's more like a little kid. She loves to observe others (mostly in an almost creepy silence and attentiveness, regardless of how gentle her smile looks), however, and does her best to adapt to changing situations. That said, while she's still pretty green to the world, she actually is somewhat unstable, emotionally speaking. She can take a challenge and adjust on the fly to new circumstances one day, but the next she could be depressed over the same conditions. Overall, expect nothing, and anticipate everything. Also, animal cruelty.

History: Raised a mage, Kana always spent time figuring out how much energy her sacrifices could generate, and what any amount of energy was capable of. From little marbles to a town monument (which caused her family to move... a couple times) Kana's done her best to understand magic, and why she couldn't control anything but water. Some of her work has resulted in rage, but her resolve hasn't faltered. In fact, an accident when she was twelve only strengthened it.

Working with knives and other sharp objects, Kana cut herself in the middle of the sacrificing process. When her blood hit the knife she was using, the blade disappeared immediately and left her able to play with the blood like it was normal water. She found it amusing and piqued her interest further, and Kana spent the next four years working on being able to control her blood without sacrificing possessions. When she did manage it (which she still doesn't fully understand), she had a ring fashioned specifically for cutting herself. (And now you see why she wears the bandages on her arm, right?)

The rest of her time so far has been spent... well, using it.

So begins...

Thirteen Years Ago

It all started with cheerful humming on one harmonious autumn afternoon. Beneath the sunny veil and fiery leaves that hung suspended on thorny branches, tranquility was disturbed by melodic tunes and the rustle of green grass. The sweet voice belonged to a little girl, no older than eight, her diminutive stature and joyful humming masking her intentions without fail. Her feet moved quickly, leading the wandering child and the bag of tricks over her back to a quiet amphitheatre that opened up to the clear blue sky.

A single, speechless guardian stood poised and ready to meet her, watching over the vacant space from the centre of the clearing. Basking in sunlight, his steel façade glistened wondrously, displaying his towering magnificence in all its glory. The statue was situated on top of an embroidered iron slab, its shoulders eased in relaxation. One arm held a sword to its chest, the pommel held in a deliberate upside-down fashion so that the tip of the blade just barely scratched against the ground. The other hand donned a shield, a symbol of protection. At the bottom of the statue, a golden plaque showcased, "Prosperity". Like all statues, sadly, it carried an awful stillness about it.

This monstrous metal masterpiece portrayed none other than Eugene van Goff, the Lares who watched over the surrounding town. While most all the citizens had never seen their guardian angel in person, some insist that the monument — over three metres tall, mind you — was the same size as the real thing! It was at the base of the statue that this little girl stopped, emptying her sack filled with variably-sized metal balls, shields, and chains and the like. Was she making an offering through sacrifices?

Well, that's what van Goff believed, and it captured his interest as a king finding a new country to conquer.

Even a child knows of my brilliance, he haughtily thought, but the little girl didn't actually care. This was just another of her experiments. One by one, from tiny metal pellets to her late grandmother's rings to the pair of five-kilogram shields, each object was sacrificed faster than the last, until the second shield disappeared almost instantaneously.

"So," the little girl started as she spoke to herself, "You can use the energy from one sacrifice to break down another one?" She looked up to Eugene's gleaming steel face, her own eyes overcome with fierce curiosity. She had at least fourteen kilograms' worth of magical energy at her disposal, and it was all surrounding the fantastic statue from the base to the perfectly-cast locks of hair in a twisting, twirling blue light.

"What was the incantation again?" It took her a moment to think as the length of energy latched itself to Eugene's beloved sculpture, effortlessly engulfing it. She may have missed a few words, but the deceptive strength in her young voice had worked all the same coupled with the energy she'd already built up.

"Bound by the laws of magic, I, Kana Gotou, order you to become my power." In a matter of moments, the monument was gone.

No sound betrayed the startling phenomenon. Steel atomized as the entire figure cascaded down in the span of a breath, crumbling into floating particles of blue energy that were immediately absorbed into Kana's body. The whole process was utterly mystifying until the significance of her words hit a little too close to home. The small girl looked in joy and wonder at the fruits of her labor, yet something was off.

In response to her destruction, the skies flared red, embittered with celestial outrage as a deafening thunder clap rocked the clearing. An explosion roared behind her, the force of it shattering the earth and shaking trees. Out of the smoldering crater stalked a man. The air within crackled and hissed in chaos, as if distorted by the nature of his entrance. Elegant, domineering strides brought him up the light incline towards this impudent little criminal and halted just short of her, the gap between them only being the late statue's resting place. Glowering down, the lare was nearly twice Kana's height and he used it to full effect. The man's likeness was nearly identical to that of the statue's, but he was far from placid, and he was far from virtuous. Azure eyes narrowed in irritation where the statue had once been before drifting over the girl, who seemed even more interested in what she'd just caused. He was going to wipe away that oh so innocent expression of hers. Permanently.

"That was a wonderful magic trick," van Goff began with a click of his tongue and a livid grin. "You'd have made a great mage, child. Unfortunately, you've defiled a monument directly under my protection. More to the point, you chose to destroy a monument dedicated to me. Although a statue could never quite equate to my glory, this is a crime I view as a personal insult, the penalty for which is death." Death, to little Kana, seemed harsh.

"Any last words?" he asked as electrical energy snaked threateningly around his fist. Kana went into thought once again. She had an insane amount of magical energy at her fingertips, and she certainly didn't feel like dying. Looking up at Eugene's eyes, blazing with the rage of divine betrayal as they were, she remembered the more serene and protective expression on the monument's face.

"Your statue was prettier," she remarked, exploding into droplets of water that disappeared into the sky and escaped the reach of her demise.

It was the first and last time Eugene van Goff had met the defiant little girl, but he has never lived the humiliation down. Releasing an angry curse, the lare swore to restore his honor. Fortunately, he had all the time in the world.

Present

The twin double doors to the chamber slammed open with indiscriminate haste, instantly revealing the lithe form behind them. Ignoring the attention she had drawn, Rosena, the second guardian of the earth king, wasted no time in striding forwards. Apparently, there was only one individual deserving of her attention within the room and she approached him with purpose. A hint of urgency pinched her ordinarily smooth features as the woman halted before her King and bowed formally.

"My King. I have grave news to inform you. Telius, the Water King, and his protectors, are dead,"

“The Water King’s death is hardly something to get flustered over, Rosena,” the voice of Eugene van Goff echoed snidely from beside the King. A dreadful arrogance oozed from his downward gaze. Eugene’s words were rich and deeply spoken, but the accent was oddly indistinguishable, like someone had only just introduced the native language to the corporeal Lare. A giant of a man, the first guardian stood to attention, arms crossed over his impeccable uniform. As ever, he resided closest to Telius, though he hardly had a choice in that matter. “If the Water King and his ilk died, it only means the current incarnation was too feeble to fend for himself. Rest assured Rosena, the earth faction is nowhere near as weak.”

"Dumb... falling from the sky... landing on Siya... making me wait... hate everyone...Seriously, everyone should go... burn... explode... find a ditch... some lava somewhere 'round here... somefink... make it myself...can lava make bones melt...?"

"Did you say something, Marsaili?"

"Nothing, King; just talking to myself."

"Mina," Kaed asked as he prepared his things, "are you able to saddle a horse?" He wanted to get Siya's attention as far away from that girl as possible.

Quietly as ever, though, she stood outside the stables and answered, "No need." Clenching her sides, the once pitifully small wings on her back expanded to massive proportions, lifting her into the air with little effort.

"Dumb... bird girl... held Siya's... damn wings... no horse... flying... gah..."

"Did you say something, Kaed?"

"Nothing, my King; just talking to myself."

Flynn's ears perked as he decided to open his mouth again. "I believe that what he said was: 'Dumb'—ow!" Kaed shut him up with a swift kick to the leg.

Siya turned in the saddle just enough to look at Kaed, who was leaning over in his, one arm across the pommel and the other lazily holding the reigns. He looked utterly irritated as he rode mere feet behind Siya. It was slightly shocking to see Mina in the air, but Siya had found it really amazing to watch. He wondered what she was exactly, but hadn't thought to ask because he feared being too rude to her.

I feel for ya, Kaed, Marsaili thought. Stupid bird lady...I hope she explodes...or spontaneously combusts...or gets eaten... by a really big bird. She tried to get a hold of her horse, who seemed jittery and nervous.

"Are you sure you can fly all the way there?" Siya called to Mina. "It'll take a few hours to get where we're going." He was worried about her strength, seeing as she'd just fallen on him not but a few hours ago. Behind him, he heard Kaed grumble again.

"If you can't, you can share my horse," Kaed quickly called out, jumping ahead of what he believed Siya was thinking.

Flynn covered his mouth in an attempt to restrain a chuckle. "I don't think you'll want to ride with Kaed. Last person who did that ended up sliding off and got left behind." He sounded like he was talking from experience.

"No such thing happened!" Kaed retorted then turned away from the other protector, propping his head up on his hand. His frown deepened as he glared off into the distance.

"I don't think you have a bruise on your ass to prove it!"

Kaed shifted, and his eyes narrowed as he turned his head to direct his glare to Flynn without saying a word.

The samurai flashed a cocky smirk knowing full well that it may be his last.

Marsaili mocked the conversation whilst trying to make her horse walk like... a horse. Instead of a crab, as it currently chose.

"Ya know, if you can't walk like a good little horsey, I'm gonna burn you into glue. Now knock it off before I melt you from the inside out. Okey dokey? Good." With that, she grasped the reins tightly and gave her horse a warning look.

The hellspawn looked up at Mina and frowned. She had sort of hoped that her wings would fall off. Oh well, there was still time. Instead of listening to the conversation, the demon entertained the thought of the winged girl falling from the sky. Preferably into something like...oh, maybe a lava pit... or Hell... or maybe even into her experiment! She could always use more test subjects...

"I don't think my wings suffered much damage; I should be able to last." Mina lowered down to Siya's level, Kaed refusing to take his eyes off the pair. "Siya, are you really a King?"

Siya smiled warmly at her, oblivious to Kaed's watchful gaze. "Of course. We're heading off to meet a Queen as well. Why do you ask?"

Kaed seemed to sink lower in his saddle, leaning over even further as he listened to the exchange with yet another scowl. His jealousy was getting the best of him, and it wasn't pleasant. However, he couldn't get rid of the feeling as Mina flew close to Siya. Of course, Siya didn't know how Kaed felt; that would explain the young King's manners. Perhaps he would make certain that the winged girl knew exactly where her place was. Several ideas as to how that could be done ran through Kaed's mind, some of which required... delicacy, due to Siya's nature. Others were on par with Marsaili. It frightened Kaed, but just a little.

Mina, in the meantime, could feel Kaed's seething hatred and jealousy. It was almost as bad as dealing with elves, but she did her best to ignore it. She started exchanging a bedtime story with Siya, about magic and Kings protecting it.

Kana

"Shh... It's okay, little guy." Kana looked overhead to the branches of a tall tree, and back to the wounded finch in her hands, which was bleeding at the wings. "You fell from your nest, didn't you?"

With the chick's blood dripping through her fingers like water, feathers sprouted across Kana's arms and in streaks through her hair; rose-colored wings emerged from her shoulder blades, and her bare toes had become talons. Without another moment to spare, the young lady scaled the height of the tree in front of her, stopping just over the injured bird's nest to return it. Kana stopped the chick's bleeding, delicately dealt with broken feathers, and gave it an accomplished smile before dropping back to the ground alone.

"Afternoon, Miss Gotou! Swear you're a dragon in disguise or somethin'." As the effects had worn off and her colorful feathers receded, Kana was greeted by a passing townsman, with a bag full of vegetables and other foodstuff.

"Why do you say that, Jeorge?"

"Ain't ever seen a human shapeshift; even with magic. Then again, all I'd ever seen with magic is killin' things and cheap tricks. Heard the royalty's even thinkin' of makin' some kind of 'games' that are jus' nothin' but mages kickin' each other's asses in giant stadiums." Jeorge got side-tracked often.

"They would have built the stadiums by now if that were true."

"Oh, they're buildin' 'em, alright. They're just not lettin' anyone see until they're finished." Charming, no? "Before I forget, the missus wanted to invite you over for dinner tonight. She thinks it mus' get pretty lonely eatin' all your meals by yourself."

"Thank you, but I wouldn't want to intrude." Jeorge's two sons didn't really like Kana all that much, since they saw her in the middle of exsanguinating a horse some weeks ago. (In Kana's defense, that horse was in the middle of dying when she found it.)

"Well," Jeorge continued as he offered Kana an apple, "if that's your decision, I won't try to change it. I'll make sure Carla knows you're doin' well, though; she gets worried, what with you living alone and using blood for magic and such. Carla feels really good whenever she takes care of someone. She doesn't think she could help you right if somethin' went awry, so it'd just crush her if anythin' happened to you, y'know? You were holed up in your home last week, too, so she was gettin' kinda paranoid."

After a healthy chomp into the fruit Kana replied, "I understand. Could you thank her for me?"

"I'd be glad to, Miss Gotou." Before he let his mind wander too far from the thought of dinner, Jeorge set himself up to leave. "It was nice seein' you again. Take care of yourself, alright?"

"I will." As soon as she and her neighbor parted ways, Kana's thoughts went back to the little chick she'd saved earlier. Maybe I should have killed it to see how long the effect would last. Birds aren't easy to catch when you're stuck on the ground.
