The most iconic part of Elise Von Hresvelg's appearance that most people - her fans, those who have worked with her, and even Directors - they all agree on one thing: Elise's sharp penetrating gaze is the one thing they remember. The girl has a natural piercing stare and the natural red hue of her irises make it even more distinct. As a girl she's always been rather stoic, naturally adept at not emoting. There's a reason why Elise was commonly cast in roles in horror movies as creepy frightening little girls. It was only after starring in Blood of the Black Eagle did she learn to better emote and inflect.

Elise doesn't have much fashion sense herself, as her family tends to dress and clothe her for her. She's usually seen in clothing fitting a "winter", with sleek neat designs and simple and solid color pallets, usually blacks and greys. She has a slender and almost lithe frame, because a Star must always take care of her body. Her family made sure that she would always be perfect in appearance.

Mirabelle Lancaster | Mother | 41 | Died at 30
Cynthia Von Hresvelg | Stepmother | 38 | Alive
Claude Von Hresvelg | Half-Brother | 16 | Alive

{☛ ⒽⒾⓈⓉⓄⓇⓎ ☚}
Jeralt Von Hresvelg, a famous director known for casting many films, was once a young man who fell in love with his lead actress at the time, Mirabelle Lancaster. It was unfortunate though, that he was already engaged to another woman at the time, someone his parents chose for him to marry, a young heiress named Cynthia Aegir. Jeralt was charmed by Mirabelle's talent and smile, but Cynthia's sweet and innocent doting was beloved by him as well. Unable to make the choice, Jeralt chose to be with both women, wooing Mirabelle and chose to try to hide this for as long as he could. In the end, he chose to marry Cynthia, believing Mirabelle was tougher and would be able to handle the breakup.

By then, Jeralt had already impregnated both women, though he didn't know it yet at the time.

When Elise was born, Mirabelle had already gone on her own path, raising and training her daughter to become a great actress. Every moment from her first word to her first step was all in preparation to have little raven haired Elise star in a movie. Even as a baby she was put on sets and acted out various babies and infant characters to get the baby accustomed to the camera from a young age. As such, Elise was always used to the glare of the cameras, the swarming paparazzi trying to get any information they could for their tabloids. Who was the mysterious father of talented and wonderful Mirabelle? It was a mystery kept locked shut behind the box. Eventually, it became known to the world that Elise Lancaster was actually the illegitimate daughter of Jeralt Von Hresvelg. Who leaked the news? In the end, no one found out, but Jeralt decided to go and see his daughter and his former lover. Impressed by her talent, he invited Mirabelle and Elise back into his life, and offered to grant Elise part of his inheritance.

Now officially a member of the Von Hresvelg family, Elise was trained even harder. Her half brother quickly resented her, Claude did not enjoy his new half sister getting all the attention. Just because she was famous and a child actress didn't mean he didn't deserve any love. He was afraid for his mother too, now that the mistress returned, would Cynthia still have a place at the Von Hresvelg house? Claude and Elise formed a hostile sibling relationship, they never did see eye to eye. He would pull her hair, she would call him stupid and talentless, and no matter how their families tried to make the children get along, all they did was get in more fights. Still, Elise continued to be a rising star, getting her own set of fans eager to see her growth as a child star. She was given the nickname "Black Eagle" based on a character she played when taking her first starring role. Jeralt, naturally, never casted her in his films. No matter how much Mirabelle asked, he always refused to let Elise take part in his art.

One day, when Elise was twelve, the two women in the family decided to take the children out for a concert in downtown Crysanthemum. Over the years Mirabelle and Cynthia learned to love each other. Rather than have their old rivalry and feud, they accepted the situation for what it was, and even developed affection for one another. Wishing for their children to have the same sentiment, they were taken out to enjoy a concert. Sadly, this resulted in tragedy. Little did they know, the concert would be bombed by a suicide bomber. Mirabelle died in the explosion, and Claude lost his arm as he covered Elise with his body, protecting her through sheer instinct when the explosion went off.

But Elise didn't end up unscathed. Her face now had horrid scars, she had become horribly disfigured. She quit her role as a star and chose to hide in her room in the dark where she wouldn't have to look at her horrible face anymore. She quit school and all of her contracts, and refused to go out into the world. Her only company was her brother, who would come by after classes and tutor her, making sure that at least his sister wouldn't fall behind in her schooling. Even years later, when her father found a doctor he trusted to give Elise plastic surgery, she would never feel beautiful again.

"Echo, what are you doing?" Christopher asked as she pulled her coat on. "I'm going out. They said it wasn't enough, I need to gather more soul pieces." She stuffed her feet into her snowboots, there was a blizzard outside. "You have a meeting in ten minutes with Cress." Christopher said as he fastened his sword to his belt. "I know," Echjo replied, crossing her arms. He pulled on his coat, "Come on," Echo grinned, bouncing on her heels as she followed him outside. They braved the cold and managed to get to the car, checking the online mission boards. "There's a handful nearby, not high priority, but they'll do." He pulled the car into reverse, Echo turning on the seat warmers and strapping in. "THe more the merrier." Echo rubbed her hands together, she had forgotten her gloves.

No matter, she wouldn't need them. They were out all day, their synchro rate hovering in the mid nineties. The two of them had no need for training any longer, not after going on such a lengthy mission. When they returned, Cress was waiting for them in the lobby, her arms crossed. "Where have you been all day?" She asked, clearly annoyed that they had skipped on their meeting. "Gathering soul pieces, Flo needs more. We're running out of time," Echo replied, annoyed that Cress did not realize how urgent this task was. "I understand that Echo, but you need to be mindful of the fact that we had a time and you didn't honor it. Come on, I'm free now and you're fingers are nearly blue." Echo sighed, following Cress to the lift. "I'll take these to Malmortis," Christopher offered, taking the soul pieces.

Keron was brewing tea, she glowered as soon as she saw Echo enter. "What?" Echo nearly snapped, glaring at her. "Nothing," Keron mumbled, no doubt recalling the time Echo had kicked her arse. "Have a biscuit Echo," Cress said as she sunk into her seat behind the desk. She was still only acting director, but her office looked almost the same as Wei's. There were several clocks hanging on the wall, counting the hours in different times around the world. Echo gladly took a biscuit, as well as a cup of tea and sat in the seat opposite. "So, what's this all about?" Echo asked, dunking her biscuit in her tea and taking a bite. "Your recent aptitude exams." She slid them across the desk for Echo to see. "Echo, why do you act so dumb?" Cress inquired, Echo glowered at the papers.

"According to these tests, you've been holding out on everyone. You had a pattern, you purposely marked every tenth answer wrong, didn't you?" Cress asked as Echo quietly sipped her tea, not willing to answer. "Echo, you do realize just how important these tests are, don't you?" Every few years, all demons were required to take an aptitude exam. The questions grew more difficult as the exam went on, but Echo had found it rather easy. They changed the questions every few years, so there was no chance to learn what was on them. Reason being, if your partner were to die, they wanted to match you to someone with similar aptitude. "I'm not smart, alright? I can't think strategies. The only thing I'm good for is fighting," she took another biscuit. "That's all, alright? I've known for a long time. There's something wrong in my head, not all the cogs are in the right place or something."

"That's not true, how do you Brits put it? You're brilliant and you've been holding out on everyone." Echo shook her head, "I just read a lot."

|| The Death of a Bachelor || Panic! At the Disco ||

When Echo was let out of the meeting at last, she felt no better than when she had gone in. "So?" Christopher asked, pushing off of the wall he had been leaning against while waiting for her. "Cress says it's likely they won't have a match for me once Doll returns. She doesn't want to push me onto someone that can't... you know." Echo was a handful, between her messed up head and her violent tendencies, she needed a partner that could keep her in check. Cress had already explained that once her contract with Chris was dissolved, she would not be allowed outside of the building. They would let her move back into her old flat and she would be allowed to go to the dining hall, but that was it. Had Echo not had several strikes of escapes, murders, and attempted suicides, then she would have been allowed her freedom.

"Cress is smart, once Wei returns, she'll make sure to update him on your deal." Echo nodded, she wanted her limited freedom. She was tired of being locked up in the East Tower everytime one of her partners died or got rid of her. "She better, I'm not taking no for an answer." They went to the dining hall next, it was past supper, but Echo was hungry. There were usually boxed dinners left out for those who had missed the shift. Thankfully, there were a handful left. They tucked in on the windowsill, the dining hall mercifuly quiet. "How many days do we have?" Echo asked quietly, pushing her food round. "One week until we execute the operation to save everyone." Christopher replied, eyeing Echo, making sure she ate. "Come on, let's go upstairs, it's nearly your bed time." Echo nodded, getting to her feet and following him to the lift.

The door was unlocked, Christopher grasped his sword, pushing the door open slowly. He breathed out a sigh of relief, seeing that it was only Melody and Flo. "Oh, why did you make her wear that?" Echo asked, crossing her arms. "You know I've seen her in a dress before? The Christmas Party." Echo did not like Flo like that, no matter what anyone thought. Echo could never see Flo as a romantic partner, they had been raised together, if anything, they were sisters. "I'm not overdoing it, I'm just getting all the ingredients so you can be better." Echo peeled off her jacket and her winter boots, "Where'd Sana go?" Why was Melody pushing Flo around? "We got ten new soul pieces today, I'm sure Malmortis will have his pick." Hopefully they could begin inserting pieces soon.

Echo just wanted to see Flo get better. "I just want to work together in the field again." Especially since she would have to work her way up from the bottom again once she had her new partner. Did Echo regret turning Flo into a demon? No, not in the least. If she hadn't, who knows if Flo would have lived any longer? Especially since she kept refusing the lung transplant. The only thing Echo regretted was tricking Flo in order to have the deed done.

Melody was thrilled to show off how pretty she made Flo despite the pinkette's meek attempts to push her away. In the end she decided to give up and no longer showed any resistance to the attack. Melody no doubt missed the old days when she and Doll would always dress Echo up against her will. At least this time Flo would endure the burden rather than Echo this time. Echo wasn't impressed in the slightest by Melody's antics however. "The party..." Things were so much simpler back them. Who would have thought that worrying about Seele was a lot less demanding than having a civil war raging in the demon realm? She hoped to be able to take part in the operation to save their friends. Flo needed to hurry and get better, she wanted to be out of active duty.

Echo insisted that she wasn't overdoing it but even Flo knew how hard her friend was working. Echo was toiling day in and out, trying to get as many soul pieces as possible. Was Malmortis right? Was it wrong to sacrifice the lives and freedom of other demons just to save herself? Flo didn't know, moral questions like that were something she wasn't always the best at considering. "Sana asked me to take care of Flo while she was needed to attend a training session with Mason. Both of them are training rigorously while they're off duty for the upcoming operation." Melody explained when Echo asked about Sana not being there as Flo's caretaker. "We'll.. help find you... a Sana too." Flo told Echo softly. A human perceptive to the needs of demons, a human that understood that demons were not monsters or evil.

How long has it been since Flo and Echo last worked together on the field? Way back during the operation in Spain to eliminate Baroness Elimine, wasn't it? "We'll serve again." Flo told her friend, reaching out to try and touch her hand to show her sincerity. "It'll... be a... promise." And Flo wasn't the type to make promises she couldn't keep. "It's things like that that make people wonder if you two are a couple." Melody joked, grinning. "The other day Calciferous asked me if you two had your first night together yet! He was so jealous!" Flo made a face at Echo, not liking the idea of being intimate with the little spitfire in that way. While Flo did have a history of incestuous feelings, her closeness to Silence had different situations attached to it.

"Should I start explaining to everyone that you two aren't an item?" Even back when they were rising the ranks as a duo together there were those who thought of Flo and Echo as having feelings for one another. "But it'll be funny watching you two get all defensive too." Melody probably was just entertained by the whole situation anyways. "So-" Melody's eyes widened when she realized Flo had slumped over, her skin turning paler. "Wait, Flo? What's going on?" She reached for the pinkette, realizing she wasn't breathing. "Crap, was the dress tied too tight?" Even as Melody undid the knots she didn't start breathing. In her panic she knocked the oxygen tank over, the tube tearing as air whistled uselessly into the air of the flat.

"Soon," Echo promised. Once she had all of the pieces for the soul piece, Flo would be back to normal and could rejoin them on the battlefield. Echo would cherish that day, she missed seeing Flo standing on her own two feet, breathing with her own lungs. "I think we're nearly there," Echo promised. Her arms hurt, she had been swinging her daggers left and right today. "Tomorrow I should be able to finish the job and-Flo?" Echo questioned, noticing she had slumped over. "Flo? Are you alright?" She placed a finger beneath Flo's nose, stiffening. "She's not breathing!" Christopher jumped into action, calling the emergency telly line. Melody panicked, tripping over the oxygen, ripping the nubs out from Flo's nose.

"Melody!" Echo yelled, pulling the oxygen tank away and trying to reloop it under Flo's nose. The door burst open, the emergency services having arrived. They grabbed Flo and placed her on the stretcher, carting her away. "I'm going with them-" Christopher grabbed her shoulder. "No, you aren't. You need to go to bed, they'll take care of Flo. You can check on her in the morning," Melody had rushed out the door after them, no doubt blaming herself. Echo felt cold. "She wasn't breathing," she whispered, hugging herself. "She wasn't-" unexpectedly, arms wrapped around her. Echo stiffened as Chris silently supported her. She was tired, she was weary down to her very core. "You need a break." Christopher spoke softly, "you're pushing yourself too much Echo."

She shook her head, "No, not until all of the soul pieces are collected." Echo replied, attempting to take a step. She nearly collapsed. "Shadow and Calciferous can gather the last two," Chris lifted her, carrying her to her room. He set up her nighttime feeds and brought her, her pajamas. "Go to sleep, no sneaking out." Echo nodded, the door closing behind him, the nightlight turning on automatically as soon as the light went off. The moment her head hit the pillow, she was out like a light, not even awakening to turn off the annoying beep of her machines. By the time her eyes opened, it was almost noon the next day. The flat was quiet, Echo felt delirious and disoriented. She sat upright, feeling dizzy and sick. Flo... she had to go check on Flo, there was something wrong with her friend, but Echo could barely see straight.

The door opened, but it wasn't Christopher, it was Keron, of all people. "What are you doing here?" Echo asked, her throat dry. "Cress is talking with Chris, he told me to see if you were up yet." Keron replied, crossing her arms in the doorway, her tail swishing. "Tell them I can't get out of bed, my head is spinning." Keron jogged off, returning with both humans, Cress looking concerned, Christopher, well, he looked like himself. "What's wrong?" Cress asked, pushing the door open the rest of the way. "My head won't stop spinning," she felt hot and cold at the same time. Cress felt her forehead, frowning. "It seems like you might have caught a bug."

The pinkette was in bed in a special hospital ward where those in critical condition got to be in. She was set up with breathing machines to keep her lungs pumping, to keep oxygen flowing through her body. "She won't be able to live without these machines, but we can't wake her up now." The doctor told Cress and Sana, much to both of their dismay. "But Echo's..." Echo called in sick today, Cress made sure to go and see her. "How much time do we have?" Sana asked, stress clear on her face. She loved Flo a lot, she didn't want anything bad to happen to her. "Not long. You have to make the decision, Acting Director Winter." Cress gulped, looking at Flo's pitiful figure in the bed.

"This was probably her mortal live expectancy had she never become a demon. She was destined to die at 19 most likely." The doctor said, shaking his head. This was the human doctor who had worked with Flo for a long time, back when she was till Mara LaFleur, the unfortunate kid in the hospital that no one thought would ever become anything but a young dead girl. "Cress... please." Sana begged, her hands shaking. "I know it's risky, I know that there's not enough pieces to fill it in... even if it means you have to use the Rowena shard, we have to do it now." Cress nodded, understanding the circumstances. "Alright." She said, taking a deep breath. "Alright. We'll prepare for the procedure to begin. Someone tell Chris, so he can tell Echo if he feels she's ready to know it's happening."

Cress and Sana went to meet Malmortis at the school office. He knew it was time when he saw the looks on their faces. "Take me to her." Cress had the bag of sealed containers, each container holding a blue tagged soul piece, since they were the ones safest to use. The two pieces Shadow and Calciferous gathered yesterday weren't enough, they both were green and were risky to make use of. Malmortis was face to face with Flo who laid uselessly in bed, the end of her mortal coil was nigh. "Clear the room. It'll be best to do this without interruptions." He counted the blue tags, shaking his head. "Acting Director, are you sure? There's a risk of takeover. Considering how Rowena took over her once before, there's no saying she won't try it again." Cress bit her lip, but she nodded. "We need to save her, and there's no time left. Fill in what you can, and whatever space is left you have to use Rowena's shard, but do it carefully."

Three hours later Malmortis left the room, looking fatigued and tired. It was a lot of work to try to carefully fill in every missing chunk of the pastel pink soul piece. Sana was gnawing on her lip, blood dripping down her chin in the waiting room. Was there anyone else with her? "How - how is it? How is she?" Malmortis frowned as he saw her. "I did everything I could. All of the spaces are filled." Flo was still asleep, the monitor still glowing red as she remained in critical condition. "It all depends on her now."

Echo waited, tense, from the moment she heard the news. She could hardly eat or rest. The moment Melody found out that Echo had a fever, she came to tend to her. "You don't have to play nurse," Christopher said, knowing that it would be useless to protest. "I'm not playing nurse, I'm helping make Echo better. Now go do whatever it is you do when you're not working," Melody shooed him out. She made Echo take a bath and braided her wet hair, she made her lay under blankets and brought her soup and pudding, insisting that Echo drink every last drop. "Why are you being so nice?" Echo asked as Melody placed a cold compress on Echo's forehead, trying to massage her tense limbs. "Because you're my sister." Melody replied, her expression curious. "You've never been nice to me before. Why now? Why do you suddenly care?"

Slowly, Melody's expression began to change. It was thoughtful, then sad, then remorseful. "I guess... I want to make up for lost time." She said softly, brushing hair out of Echo's face. "You're five hundred years too late," Echo replied grimmly. "Need I remind you, you are only four years old." Melody teased, which made Echo glower. "I'm almost five," Melody rolled her eyes. "Yes, yes, you're so old." Melody pat her head, "stop trying to grow up so fast, alright? Not many people have been given as many chances as you," Echo's expression changed. "What do you mean?" Melody shook her head, suddenly recalling that those memories were gone. "You've been poisoned, stabbed through the heart, died twice, and you're still here. I don't know if you're lucky or if some higher power is out to kill you."

Melody made Echo take cold medicine after that and Echo drifted off. She awoke when Christopher knocked lightly at the door, "It's been done, Flo's soul piece is completely filled." He had been sitting with Sana for the past few hours, attempting to be a calming presence, but he had returned to let them know. "I want to go see her," Echo said sleepily, trying to sort herself between her blankets. "No, you would just make it worse. What if she caught the bug you have?" Melody placed her hands on her hips. "You'll be staying right here until your fever breaks," Echo tried to glare, but she was too dizzy. "Bucket?" She said instead, feeling sick. "Case in point," Melody said as she handed it over. "Give this to Sana," she handed Christopher a card she had made while Melody was fussing over her. "I will," he disappeared out the door.

"How come I'm always the one that ends up sick when it's most important?" Echo sniffled, reaching for her water. "Because you're the one that's always up in everybody's business. You probably caught it from one of the demons you killed." Echo sighed, looking up at the ceiling, the stickers of stars had been scattered all around it. "Don't worry, you'll be back to killing things as soon as your fever goes down." Melody made Echo a cuppa, watching as she drank it. "You need to go easy on yourself too, your daggers are brand new and they've already seen more wear than they have all year."

She awoke when Christopher knocked lightly at the door, "It's been done, Flo's soul piece is completely filled." || The Death of a Bachelor || Panic! At the Disco ||

There were things Echo could not remember happening in her dreams, things that she could not recall when she awoke. A plane crash, a fire, being ambushed. Then there was that basement, a reoccuring nightmare. A woman with purple hair, her face always lurking closer and closer, but a shadow obscured her features. There were chains and it was cold, so cold. There was always someone looming over her, torturing her. They dragged knives or claws across her skin, whatever was sharpest. They cut her tail and sawed off her wings, leaving her helpless. She would curl up into a ball to try and sleep, the tatters of her clothing providing little to no warmth in the freezing basement. Anytime the floorboards creaked or someone shuffled, she would stiffen, waiting, knowing they were coming.

She would hold herself and rock or sit against the wall. There was no rescue, no escape, she had tried, but she always ended up right back where she started. She was tired of fighting, her throat was always raw from screaming. Today was different, she could tell. Different was bad, she had learned, different meant pain. The floorboards above creaked, dust shifting, raining down on her. A demon with no face appeared in the light. Echo unconsciounsly shifted, the chains heavy on her wrists. He knelt down, cupping her chin in his fingers and tilting her head up to look at him. "Once so powerful, now so pitiful." Her head lolled, her eyes no longer holding any light. Any hope she had once had, had long since been beaten out of her. "A shame really, had I gotten here earlier, you would have been useful." He stepped away, wiping his hands. She was filthy, covered in dust, dirt, and dried blood.

She was painfully thin and weak, the others always forgetting about her until they needed to let off steam. "Don't bother with Nova," the purple one stood in the shadows, grinning. "I've extracted all the information that I could from her. Rather, pitiful, I must say, but her partner was higher up on the totem pole. Rather useful, I might add." Echo looked at the ground. Her partner... Gwenyth? Everything began to fade. No, no this wasn't right. This wasn't right, what was happening? There were... there were two Echo's. She was standing there, staring at herself, seeing her body tethered to chains in the basement. Everything flickered, her head filled with terrible static. She was no longer in the basement, she was wearing a hospital gown, sitting on the exam table, waiting.

Christopher was standing next to her, Elliot's brow was pinched in concern. She stared at her hands. Why couldn't she remember any of this? Something wasn't right, her head wasn't on right. "I would say about three months," Elliot looked remorseful. Why? Echo looked up, at the holographic image of her brain. Oh. She was going to die, wasn't she? Her hands shook. She wanted to die, so why was she so upset? This was what she had wished for all along, wasn't it? "We'll find a way," Christopher said softly. This wasn't right, none of this was. There were two Echo's. She was watching herself, looking at her terrified face, at her shaking hands.

She awoke sweating, her hair sticking to her face at all angles. It was morning, little after eight o'clock. Her heart throbbed, her head ached, but try as she might, she could not remember. An unsettling feeling was sitting in her chest. Echo stormed out of her room, her teeth chattering. She still had a fever, most likely. "Echo?" Christopher asked, seeing her unsettled state. "Go back to bed," he knelt down to feel her forehead, "you're burning up."

"Something isn't right..." she trailed off, "my head it's-it's hurting." His lips drew into a thin line, his expression serious. "Do you need me to call Elliot?" Echo shook her head, she was shaking. "Echo, I know you don't want to go to the East Tower, but we need to check. You've had a fever for two days." She stepped back, "No... Flo-Flo is worse. She needs their help right now, not me."

It was strange. After spending what felt like years fighting against Rowena in the pink garden that was apparently her soul space, Flo awoke in a hospital bed to breathing machine beeping and worried doctors all around her. "Flo, you're awake." Elliot said, shining an annoying light in her eyes. She decided to bare it for the moment but with all the machines in her body she couldn't quite speak at the moment. It was all breathing for her and while Flo understood the need for it she didn't like it either. The entire room smelled sterile. Was it because of the ventilator? She wanted to choke because of the tube going down her throat, she wanted them to get rid of it already. "Raise one finger for no, and two fingers for yes." Elliot said, knowing she couldn't speak right now.

"Do you understand the instructions?" She put to fingers up, feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. He nodded, seemingly relieved. A whole string of questions came at her then, all to evaulate whether or not she would be able to get off the ventilator yet. She wanted to know how much time it has been. What was it again? Flo did a series of signs and Elliot scratched his head. "I don't know sign language. Let's get Sana here, she should still remember how to do it." After a while Sana arrived after being made sterile so Flo couldn't catch any germs in her delicate lungs. Her blonde hair was all tied up and kept under a net, making her look somewhat comedic. "I'm here." Her tone was soft, loving. "You're awake." Flo crossed her eyebrow, trying to remember how to sign. It was sloppy and if Echo were here she would laugh at her. "Um, it's been two days. We still have four days until the operation."

Flo needed to be on the operation. "If I'm not there, no one can fight Messiah safely." She signed to Sana, who translated it to Elliot. Since they both had control over time in different yet similar ways, Flo was probably their best hope of keeping Messiah at bay long enough to get everyone else out safely. All of these hand movements were making her tired. "Where is Echo?" She signed and Sana smiled, not surprised at all at the concern. "She's sick, so she doesn't want to come see you and put you at risk. It's nothing serious, Chris says she just caught a bug." Sana replied. It sounded just like Echo to think that way, didn't it?

"Well, we'll need a little longer to decide if it's safe to take you off the ventilator." Elliot said at last, apologetically. "As for being on active duty, you'll have to clear that with Acting Director Cress." Flo was ready to argue her butt off for the right to take part in the mission. If she wasn't there, she was afraid of losing people important to her that she couldn't bear to lose. There was already so much loss in the war. "I'm on the holo with Chris. We can set up a call with Echo." Sana said with a smile. Flo nodded, wanting that call to come through. She was worried - after being out for so long Flo wasn't sure if the fix on Echo's brain was still working. She needed to touch up on Echo to make sure everything was alright with her head.

They sat in intake, Echo shivering and sweltering at the same time. The fever was making her delirious, or so they said when Echo began to scream at them. "You're hiding something! I know it! It's in my head! There's something wrong with my head!" They gave her versed sometime after that, making her feel sluggish. "She knows," Christopher said softly, standing behind the curtain. Cress was on the other line, listening from her office. "For now we just have to get the fever to break, once Flo is awake and well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it." Chris nodded, turning the holo off and parting the curtain. "We're going to move Echo up to a room," the nurse said. There were three others in the intake, which served as the ED for the demons. "Is Elliot going to come soon?" Christopher asked, following the nurse as she moved the bed. Echo was still huddled under the blanket, an ice pack on her forehead.

"Once he's done in the ICU," the nurse confirmed. They put Echo in a room with a view of the courtyard, the same room she had been in when Flo had fixed her brain. "I'm gonna die... I don't want to die," she muttered repeatedly to herself, something between relief and fear in her voice. "No you aren't," Christopher replied, sitting beside her, "it's just a bug, you'll be fine." It was an hour later when Elliot arrived, done with his rounds in the ICU, where Flo currently was. "I heard a bit of what's going on from the nurse. Echo, can you tell me what's hurting?" He asked, wanting to hear it from her. "She's been like this since she woke up," Christopher supplied. "My head... I'm dying, there's something wrong with my head." She moaned, shivering as Elliot came close.

"Well, she does have a fever. I would like to get a scan if that's her main complaint, the nurse took bloods so we'll see if that turns anything up." He did an initial exam, shining a light in Echo's eyes and listening to her lungs. "Ah, I think I hear it. Alright, I'm going to order some pictures. I'm going to keep a standing order of versed." A drug that tampered with the memory and evoked a sense of calm. "With any luck, the fever will break tonight and Echo will be in tip top shape for the mission." The nurse came in soon after that, Echo was out like a light with the combination of medicines and they took her to get the scans. Two hours later, they had the answers. "Pnuemonia, more than likely from over exposure to the cold. Poor thing quite nearly worked herself to death for the sake of her friend."

The nurse came to administer antibiotics. The fever was going down at last, but Echo was too loopy from the versed to talk straight. "You should eat lunch," Christopher prodded. She was staring at the ceiling, giggling at nothing. He pushed the button on the bed to sit her up. She reached for her fork, giggling when she nearly knocked over a cup of milk. "I'm here!" Melody chirped, wearing a nurse's outfit. "I can take over from here, Chris. Go get some rest," she practically shoved him out of the room. "Come on Echo, let's eat some lunch." She had come as soon as she had returned from her mission. Chris, in the meantime, went to check on Sana and Flo.

Sana shut off the holo, shaking her head. "Echo's too sick right now, but we can try again later." Flo nodded, narrowing her eyes at the tube stuck in her throat. She didn't like the ventilator, but hopefully she would be allowed to have it removed. "I should sleep." The pinkette tried to sign and Sana giggled as she read the movements. She could feel the exhaustion and with Elliot running back and forth between the wards dealing with all sorts of cases she wouldn't have an update on her ventilator removal situation for a while. "Alright, you do that." Sana sat down in the chair, pressing buttons on her holo until words began spilling out in pleasant British English, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone was being read to her in audiobook format. "I'll be right here if you need me, okay?"

When her eyes opened again after what felt like a very restless uncomfortable sleep Flo stared at Sana who seemed to be enjoying listening to the audio book of Harry Potter. "How long?" Flo asked, trying to wake herself up. "Barely five minutes." Sana's voice was patient and soft. "Are you feeling better?" It was only ten minutes? Flo could have sworn she was asleep for longer than that. Did she freeze time in her sleep? The pinkette was bored and discouraged from trying to sleep so she decided to do something else. Did Rowena's soul piece shard give her a bit of her power? Flo thought up the image of a chocolate cake, and then tried to implant the cake into Sana's mind. Her partner blinked and stared in front of her in confusion. "Sorry, I think I'm a bit confused. Where did this cake get here?" She asked, batting at it as if she were a cat playing with a ball of yarn. "Oh, it flickered away. Is something wrong with my head?"

"Sorry." Flo admitted, seeing that Sana was sad at the lake of cake. "I was practicing to see if I could do what Rowena did." Because a large shard was used to fill in her own fractured soul piece, a very small fragment of power came. "I see. Don't apologize, it's okay." Sana waved her hands to show that she was fine, though her stomach was growling. Sana was a big eater after all. It didn't seem very strong, Flo didn't have much control over it, the implanted thoughts could only persist for a few seconds at best. That made sense, considering she only had a shard of the soul piece rather than the whole thing. Flo also had absorbed Purjura and Wizar once, but she lost access to their powers after she died and was reborn as an infant.

There was a knock on the door. Sana came to open it up, revealing Christopher. He updated them on Echo's situation and Flo nodded, signing back at him. "If she needs me to tune up her brain again, please let me know." Flo didn't want Echo's horrid memories to start coming back after all. "Flo's looking like she's doing well." Sana told Chris, beaming. "I'm just happy she's back and lively." Flo was lively? She didn't feel it. Once the drugs wore off maybe she'd start feeling like her old self again.

"Focus on yourself," Christopher replied, taking a seat across from Sana. Flo had just woken up, there was plenty of time for her to help and fix Echo, but for now, she needed to focus on herself and getting better. After all, Flo was the first demon to have ever received a treatment like this. It was revolutionary, but terribly dangerous all the same. After all, with all of the fragments they had collected, there was no telling if any of the other personalities would begin to rub off and show their traits. Hopefully, this would fix Flo's problem of constantly shifting through human and demon and allow her to remain a demon. "You need to get better, we need you and Sana on the mission in four days." It loomed ever closer, the possibility of retrieving his wife and the Director nerve wracking.

~

Doll sat on the sill, watching the snowfall. For the most part, the other demons steered clear of her, knowing what she could do and who her parents were. The only time they knocked on her door was when they wanted to challenge her. Ever since Messiah had lost Zinnia, one of his precious pawns, he had seemed to lose interest in Doll as well. He made her stay in her room, out of sight, unless he needed to interogate her on aspects of the Tower Society. They were preparing a raid and Doll had been trying to get a message to Christopher, but her holo didn't work in these parts and it was slowly losing its charge. She kept it off, checking it once a day for a message, but alas, none ever came. What was her husband doing? Was he worried about her? Did he even care about her anymore?

In her frustration, she threw a vase at the wall, sinking down, wishing she were anywhere but here. The door suddenly opened, someone entering, huffing and puffing, their clothes torn, blue hair askew. "Ariel?" Doll asked, swallowing hard. She rose, not believing what was in front of her. "D-Doll?" Ariel asked, surprised, injured, she was bleeding badly from a wound in her side. Doll rushed forward, pressing a kerchief into the blood to stem the flow. Ariel winced, clearly in pain. "What are you doing here?" Doll asked quietly, her eyes searching to make sure this was not some sort of trick. "I-" Ariel winced, her ribs crackling. "I was taken captive by Baroness Anguis. She uses her snakes to torture me and Messiah always puts me back together, but today she left and I managed to run away."

Doll froze, "Ariel, her snakes are poisonous." The poison they secreated was highly toxic. "I-I know," Ariel whimpered. "But I would rather die then go back there." Her lower lip was trembling, how long had she been here? In Anguis's clutches? "Ariel, if we don't get you back there, you won't receive the antivenom. Think of Lana, think of everyone back at the Tower Society, waiting for you." Ariel's palor was beginning to grow white, she was sweating profously, a sign that the toxins were well within her veins now. "Please Ariel," Doll implored, "just hang on a little longer. I'll get you home, alright?" Ariel closed her eyes, biting down on her lower lip to keep from crying out in pain. "F-fine," she whimpered at last, it was clear she had been strong for a very long time.

Doll lifted Ariel up easily, carrying her back to Anguis's room. "I'm sorry, I wish there was more that I could do," Doll whispered as she returned Ariel to the snakes that waited to retrieve her. Ariel stiffened in fear, Doll turning away, unable to stomach the sight. Ariel began to scream, writhing, Doll closed the door quickly behind her, choking back tears.

"There, that should do it." Echo stepped back, examining the new armor in the mirror. "It's tight," she complained, tugging at the neck. "Then I'll fix it," Alex Drake knelt down, using scissors to make the neckline bigger. "How's that?" Echo examined herself in the mirror. "Better," she decided. It was a prototype for the new armor, the one Echo would be wearing tomorrow on the battlefield. Christopher was putting his on behind the curtain. It was black with silver plates that interconnected for easy movement. There were blue lines, two of them, running down each side. There was a visor that went with it that connected to the TB so you could see your synchro rate and the heartbeat of your partner. Echo opted not to wear it, she hated technology and Alex smartly took that into account.

"Shock proof, water proof, with insulated heating and cooling for the English temperment. It can detect your body temperature and adjust accordingly." Echo turned around, examining her behind. "And extra padding for falls. It can withstand most elemental type attacks." Which meant that if Echo used her abilities, it would not tear to shreds. "So what can't it do?" Echo asked sarcastically. "Bake bread?" Alex quirked a brow, "would you like me to add-" Echo shook her head, it seemed that he missed the mark, not uncommon with Drake, as he did not seem to understand humor. "So, what do you think?" Christopher asked, stepping outside of the curtain. It was the same color and model, but somehow, Echo thought that she looked like a joke and Chris looked like a soldier.

"Don't wear them out yet, I'm going to make final adjustments and they'll be in your rooms by tonight." Echo nodded, going behind the curtain to change into her street clothes. Of course, she still had to abide by Christopher's rules. Her street clothes were much fancier than anything she would have worn by choice, but Chris believed that imposing rules on Echo would somehow reign in her wild streak. "You can go up, I'll meet you in the gym." They were going to get in some last minute training, even though their synchro rate was nearly at 95. Echo didn't know why it was so high, but she suspected it had something to do with her coma. She stuffed her hands into her pockets, digging for the sweets she kept in each dress.

"Oh, Flo!" Echo caught her as she was leaving the gym. "What are you up to? Training? You're coming tomorrow, right?" Echo stepped back, taking Flo in. It wasn't strange to see Flo in her demon form, but Echo was most certainly used to her human form. "You look good, how do you feel? How are your lungs? Sorry, I keep peppering you with questions. How's Sana doing?" Echo hadn't been able to see Flo, she had been striken with a pneumonia and then had been buried in work from Cress in preparation for the mission.

Alex Drake was very proud of his newest creation. The 110 Tower Agents would be riding his new special invention, the Night Raid Helicopter. They were built to travel at night with great speed and stealth, to quickly transport the people within to where they were supposed to be. They were small and had built in settings to hide it's signatures and signals so it would be very hard for anyone to detect them coming, especially under the cover of night. Ten Night Raid Helicopters were built, each one fit to house 11 Tower Agents. "I'm still worried though." Cress said, looking at the roster. "While there's a lot of us, most of our list are fresh new recruits." When advertising for this mission using Queen Charlotte's lost family as ways to attract young English fighters from the shelters, it filled the ranks.

But they all lacked experience.

The veterans would have to carry this fight. Figures such as Silence and Pray, Christopher and Echo, Flo and Sana, those with good long records and strength Cress would have to rely on them. "If you're worried, I don't see why you're doing this." Alex Drake said to ACting Director Cress. "Why do you insist on taking part in this operation?" Cress was wearing the raid armor with a determined frown. "This is a critical mission. I have to be there on the front line to inspire the fresh recruits so they don't break down as things get bad." Without Cress there, who would keep the new faces in line? "And more importantly... my sister's going to be there. Ellie's going to be there. I have to see her one last time." If there was a way to save Ellie, Cress would be necessary for that kind of plan.

Waking up everyone in the middle of the night, the veterans and rookies alike gathered in front of the black helicopters, warmachines waiting to deliver them to the battlefield. Mason and Lana both stood wistfully beside Queen Charlotte, who would be staying behind as well. She sat in her wheelchair, her friends standing, ready to board. "Freedom." Queen Charlotte said, raising her fist. "Retake our lost friends! For the Crown, for humanity, bring back victory! Bring back triumph! Bring back your lives!" She gulped, but her voice was firm and strong. "For this Kingdom, for all that humanity stands for, you will bring back glory. Show them what we're meant for." She made a smile, saluting the departing soldiers. "Be worthy!"

As the helicopters took to the air, as silent as if they weren't there in the first place, Queen Charlotte allowed herself to lower her fist and quiver, the strength leaving her body. "For all of your safe returns, I'd let this Kingdom and Crown burn. I'd let it all burn if they could all come back alive." Because of her call to war, how many young brave youths would they lose? How many would not return to their mother's sides, to their father's pride? "Dear departed..." Queen Charlotte whispered. "Forgive me."

....

"We're estimated to arrive at the Cascade Bau Fortress by the break of dawn." Cress said on the intercom as the ten Night Raid Helicopters traversed the English Channel. "Everyone be ready. Keron and I will be with you too, so don't forget the plan." They would go in, get Ariel, take Shiro after Vaswald comes flying in from Berlin, and then Flo and Echo find Doll and bring her back. "Remember what Ayna told us. Doll's not an Apostle yet, she didn't take the blood. Doll will help us fight to save everyone, so don't be afraid." According to Ayna, Doll was filled in on the plan as well. She would be waiting for them at the Fortress, to take them to where Ariel was waiting.

Echo could not recall the last time she had gotten a full night of sleep. Tonight it seemed, she would not be resting up either. Christopher made her go to bed right after the gym, wanting her to at least get some shut eye. Echo didn't know how long she had been asleep for, but it felt like not enough when she was roused. "Put your clothing on, it's nearly time to leave." Echo nodded groggily, putting on her new battle suit and placing her daggers in their sheaths. She attempted to brush her hair, thankful that Chris intervened with a blue ribbon that matched the lines running down the sides of the suit. They were gathering in the mess hall, breakfast a variety of hot and cold cereals. "Eat something," her human partner urged. Echo nodded sleepily, managing a bowl of hot cereal.

They were in the helicopter now, Echo sitting across from Flo and Sana. "Sleepy," she murmured. They wouldn't be there until sunrise. "Sleep," Christopher urged, wrapping her coat around her. He wanted her to get adequate rest so that she could fight. "You should sleep too Flo, we have a few hours." He suggested, "you too Sana." He rose to speak with Cress, allowing Echo to lay down in his seat. It was hard to sleep on the helicopter, even with the internal heaters of the new battle suits, it was still cold and the draft certainly wasn't helping. When Chris returned to check on her, Echo had curled up into a tiny ball on the seat, using her jacket as a blanket. He didn't want to disturb her, especially as they grew closer. They were not the only ones to nap either, many others were taking up positions on the seats and floors to catch some shut eye.

Cress's voice on the intercom roused Echo from her slumber. Doll was supposedly still their ally, they had planned for it, but Echo knew that they could not predict as much. After all, Messiah could be manipulating her. For all they knew, they could be walking right into a trap. "Snacks?" Keron offered, holding out a box full of power bras and juice pouches. Echo took one of each, chowing down. They needed to fuel up before the big mission, after all. Somehow she felt as though this wasn't a raid so much as a war. They were going into battle with Barons, multiple ones. Echo and Chris would be leading the attack, with Flo and Sana right behind them. She swallowed hard, they were the frontlines, the first line of defense. It would be up to them to protect the others. Especially the newbies, which were basically canon fodder.

"We're nearly there," Echo felt something in her stomach, butterflies perhaps. She ate quietly, listening to Cress fill them in on everything they knew. She had all of these details already, Echo had been in metings the last few days, finalizing details, prepping strategies, collecting contact information for where the deceased would be sent. They all wore tags too, with their names on them, in case their corpses could not be identified by facial appearance. It was a terrifying thought, that Echo had a hand in all of this planning. That if someone died, their blood was on her hands. She tried to take a deep breath in, never having been important.

❝Why do I always end up destroying everything I've ever loved?❞

|| The Death of a Bachelor || Panic! At the Disco ||

War was not black and white. There was no good and evil, it was two sides, each colored in various hues of gray. Echo did not belive in subjective good and bad, she rather believed that each side was simply fighting for what they believed to be right. They marched quietly, the planes of Cascade Beau deserted. It was eerie, the silence, the howling of the wind, the sun rising behind a toppled fortress that once stood tall and proud. There was evidence of the previous battle all around it, the grounds shifting to reveal the rubble, now buried in the snow. Echo swallowed hard, standing on the front lines meant that if something were to happen, she was the first line of defense. Leading the march was full of nothing but tense spines and quiet foot falls in the snow.

"This isn't right," Echo whispered. They were walking right into a trap, all of them could sense it, but none of them could stop it. Cress too, made note of how suspicious this was. The other faction should have been here, facing off against them. Instead, the only inkling of life was Ariel's presence, drawing them forward. Every creak made her jump, every whisper of wind sent a shiver down her spine despite the built in heaters. Alex Drake was lucky to not have to be here, although in spirit, they were all wearing his creation. "Something is going to jump out at us," Echo held a dagger in each hand, glad for the last minute gym session she had squeezed in before bed the night previous.

The interior of the fortress was just as empty. Was there something concealing their presence? Were they waiting in the shadows, looming in the rafters? Echo did not know. The glitter of sunrise had turned into the harsh light of morning, but the only signs that anyone had been here were Ariel's cries and the snakes that slithered across the halls. Echo killed each one they passed, knowing those rats did not deserve sympathy. Anguis had caused far too much anguish, it was time to set things straight, it was time to take back what the humans believed was rightfully their's. From here, Cress wanted to split them up. They could not open the doors, they could not rescue Ariel yet. "Echo, stay safe and listen," Chris said as they parted ways.

Echo nodded, knowing that this was impervious to their mission despite her hesitation to be separated. They were better together, as a team, but from here, he needed to fall back. Echo would remain here, on the frontlines, where she could continue to defend their soldiers. Silence took half of them, they would recon the rest of the fortress to search for any hint they may have missed on their way in. She was reminded of the button and half tempted to press it to see if it would work. "So what are we waiting for?" Echo whispered, her hands shaking from anger. "Let's find Anguis and kill her so we can bring Ariel home." Echo and Ariel had a history, after all. As Nova, Ariel had been one of the only people who had treated her as though she were still worthy of something.

She had taught Echo to swim, she had come visit her when Echo was a baby, and-and. There was a white wall in her mind, what else? There was more, but she could not recall it. Echo shook her head, no matter, there were more important things on hand. "Let's go," she turned towards the others. Flo would be with her, that was reassuring. Melody would be here too, which she was less happy about, but at least Melody and Flame could hold their own against an enemy.

They could still hear Ariel's cries as the snakes tore her apart inside the locked room. Still, they couldn't save her, she still had to hold on a bit longer. Flo stayed close to Echo as they searched, looking for where Baroness Anguis was hiding. "How are they hiding themselves?" Sana asked, since neither Echo nor Flo could sense them as they wandered the dark shadowy halls beneath the ground's surface. "It was probably something Baroness Vaswald did." She must have made some sort of device to block the demonic auras powerful Barons let out. "Don't worry, Sana." Flame said, his voice comforting. "They aren't ready for our own tech expert's new tricks either." Their new armor was really something spectacular, hopefully it would save many of their lives here. Flo stomped on a snake, narrowing her eyes as she heard the sound.

Just as the alarm sent off she heard someone scream out in pain and horror. It was to the left! "Anguis!" Flo growled, her wings spreading. "Let's get going!" Melody called, rushing alongside her towards the sound of the alarm on the suit. As six dead soldiers lay around in broken heaps, the Baroness of Agony had appeared, an overpowering aura coming off of her as she stood there in her red and white kimono as snakes surged through the floor, the ceiling, the pipes, the corners. "My my, it looks like Alex Drake has some new toys up his sleeve." Anguis's voice slithered, her forked tongue slipping between her teeth. Flo froze time then touched Echo as the others got ready to clash. "Be careful, we can't use our powers too much yet." Flo warned Echo. "We need to conserve our energy for Doll, since you and I are the only ones that can stop her."

When time resumed Flo jumped into the fray, her wings beating, slicing at Anguis's snakes as they flew towards them. Fire raged and a song was sung to strengthen their hearts and minds against the enemy. As a snake was about to bite at Flo's neck a metal plate appeared to block the attack, Sana protecting them all with her bracelet from the backline. Flo struck at Baroness Anguis, pink feather knives slashing at the Baroness's face, drawing blood. She let out a roar, snakes snapping and hissing as they flew through the air but then light blasts from crystal balls backed them up. "Get back! You two are needed for when Doll shows up!" Samurai cried, swinging his sword as Nell 2.0 sat on his shoulder, creating more lasers to protect them. "Echo, let's fall back for now." Flo said, stepping away from Anguis.

"What, you don't want revenge? I broke Ariel so much, she can't even speak. The precious little mermaid's body belongs to me." Baroness Anguis giggled. "Come on, Echo, fight me. Won't it feel so good to strike me down for little Ariel's sake?" So Flo was right, they wanted to tire out Echo and Flo before the others showed up. Would Echo fall for the bait? Before anything else could happen there was a loud sound coming from up above. It sounded like the blasting of a giant cannon, as if the sky was tearing apart. Everything rumbled, Sana almost falling on her face had Flo not caught her. "Aah!" Melody screamed, Flame grabbing her and cradling her in his arms. Anguis's grin only widened as her fangs bore themselves. "All you Tower Agents who wandered into our nest here will die, I'm afraid. But let's have some fun of it before the end."

............

The new recruits were screaming and sobbing as they hugged themselves on the ground. Cress's group had already reached the surface and were protecting the helicopters when new enemies appeared in the sky all around them. "Take cover now!" Christopher shouted, jumping to pull Cress into the safety of cover beneath a wall. Bright beams of light filled the sky like the rain from the Heavens, striking down and destroying everything it touched. Above their heads were dozens of flying carriages. A single icy blue wing shone in overhead. "Ellie..." Cress whispered. "We knew she would come. Ellie's not going to let us go easily." The railgun attack destroyed the gate. Now they couldn't go back down into Cascade Bau, and those already inside would have to find another way back out.

"Leo! Make a barrier! Don't let the helicopters take damage!" Cress screamed, and Leo nodded, spreading his arms to protect the Helicopters. They were hidden but with all these railguns floating in the sky, they couldn't take the risk of them getting hurt. Otherwise how would they get back home? "But how do we fight?" Keron asked, staring up at the sky. "None of us can fly." Another round of blasts struck, no doubt searching for them. "Urrgh." Leo grunted, falling to his knees. "I can't block these forever." He warned. "New recruits, stay near the helicopters!" Cress called, and they did, moving over. "Take your armors off and cover the helicopters with them, it'll help them survive the bombardment!"

Baroness Vaswald was in the sky, peppering them from miles away with her long ranged railgun attacks. Cress's group couldn't even get close enough to fight back. "Just stay calm and think." Chris said as the recruits shook and shake with each bombardment. "If we sit here doing nothing, eventually Vaswald will get a lucky hit and find us." Cress nodded, balling her hands into fists. "You're the commander here." Chris told Cress with a calm smile, unfazed by the bombardment of electric rays. "We'll trust the team below can handle Anguis. You're job is to come up with a strategy to let us save your sister and keep the helicopters safe." For now they had to hide in the ruins and rubble and wait until Cress came up with a winning strategy.

Flo winced, not sure she wanted to leave Echo all alone like this. In enemy territory like this Cress wanted to make sure no one was ever alone without someone to back them up. "Sana, stay here and watch Echo's back." Flo said quickly and her partner nodded, quivering as she aimed her bracelet, metal spikes shooting out to stab several snakes in the head. Flo would leave Echo to Anguis and would go and update Silence and Pray on the situation. As the pinkette flew through the dark halls she returned to the floor where Silence and Pray were standing guard, just outside the room Ariel was trapped inside, being tortured by snakes just beyond the iron door. "Flo, what's going on? We heard the sound from your direction, but we couldn't leave the post here."

Flo informed Silence about Baroness Anguis revealing herself and how Echo and Sana were left to try to deal with her while everyone else tried to kill the snakes as much as they could. "It's a mess. There's lots of Baronlings attacking other groups. Cal and Shadow reported that the rookies are being targeted and killed." Silence's brow furrowed as she thought of what to do. "We need... to try and regroup with Cress, but-" The sounds were getting louder. Was there someone dropping bombs above them on the surface? "We can't. It's blocked off, I sent some to try and secure a safe path to the surface, but everything's caved in." Silence grit her teeth. Suddenly Pray pointed in front of her. "Oh no." She whispered, her voice trembling. "Is it really? Could it really be?"

As the bright light grew ever brighter, someone grabbed her, screaming. "Don't do it, Wicked! If you blow up here, everyone will die! We'll all be buried alive!" The snakes were slithering away, as if being called back into hiding by their master. Did something happen with Echo, did she win against Baroness Anguis? Wicked grinned, tearing off her mouth seal, her body glowing brighter. "Wicked! L-let's negotiate!" Pray screamed, grabbing Wicked and holding her down. "What are you doing here? Why aren't you in Paris, serving Queen Kitra?!" The two Generals stood facing each other, both of them ready to attack. "Oh, Pray. You really did change. I remember the old you, you would be quaking in your boots trying to talk to me like that." Wicked's voice was fond as she reminisced on the past.

"Why are you working for Messiah?" Pray asked, her voice a trembling whimper. Wicked grinned, holding up two fingers. "I come with only two requests. You all put your weapons down and die for me!" Pray gulped, narrowing her eyes. "Wicked... that isn't funny." Her voice was hard as Wicked pushed her to the side. "Run!" Pray suddenly screamed to all the soldiers still inside the Cascade Bau. "Find cover before it's-" Before Flo could even react her ears went out as an explosion so loud and bright went off, the walls trembling. Wicked exploded, and the force of the explosion hurt how many? She could barely hear screams of dying soldiers as the explosion reduced their bodies to ashes.

When the brightness wore off Flo blinked and saw a mess. Her ears were ringing like she could barely hear. Who was alive? Who died? Who's soul piece was that laying on the floor?

A sword was drawn. Somehow beautiful even now, Doll King stood as Flo was trying to recover from the explosion, feeling dizzy and weak all over. "Hello. Not many can survive Wicked's explosion." Doll said softly. "And goodbye." She swung the sword, the blade aimed for Flo's neck and the pinkette was too dazed to even realize what was happening.

❝Why do I always end up destroying everything I've ever loved?❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#EE3B3B ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #FFCCCC

|| The Death of a Bachelor || Panic! At the Disco ||

An hour before the battle:

"Just don't, don't hurt them!" Doll King begged, trembling, kneeling on the floor. "Please, you can kill anyone else. I can't lose them, not again." Messiah looked down on her, practically groveling. "Fine," he granted, "they would make a nice addition to my collection." Relief flooded her, but it was only temporary. Doll had no intention on bringing her sister's back here, she was going to set them loose the moment she could. "Now rise, it does not become you to lay in the dirt like that." Doll nodded, standing unsteadily on her feet. She had bargained for the lives of her daughter, sisters, and husband, but what was the cost? She swallowed hard. It meant the death of everyone else she had served alongside.

~

Two blades clashed, sparks flying. "Flo, get back!" Echo growled, her daggers crossed, holding Doll's sword. "E-Echo!" Doll stuttered, falling back. In Sana's arms was Baroness Anguis, her clothing stained in blood. "We have a hostage, crawl back to your Master and tell him we have his precious Anguis." Doll hesitated, Echo could see the mark on her wrist. They had all said she hadn't, but Echo knew btter. Baron Messiah would not make such a careless mistake to allow Doll to run freely. The floors and walls were covered in blood, Echo could practically smell Wicked from here. Pray was sobbing somewhere along the halls, "Cal, contain Wicked while we can-" she could regenerate, but a full body explosion would take a few minutes. Cal jumped up, practically sliding on the blood.

"You have Anguis?" Doll asked, was that relief in her voice? Echo nodded. "Yes, we do." Sana held a piece of metal against Anguis's throat, threatening to cut it. Doll took a step back, then another. "Retreat!" She called, Echo looking down at Flo, who still seemed stunned and was covered in blood. "Get up," Echo said gently. She had seen worse. "This is our fight, we finally have a little advantage." She flung the door open, Ariel was passed out, the snakes retreating as soon as they saw their master passed out. She walked slowly into the room, a small fire in her palm to light the interior. "Ariel?" Echo whispered, she wasn't moving.

Echo knelt down, pressing a finger underneath Ariel's nose. She was breathing, which was a good sign. There were bite marks all around her, she was bleeding badly. "Pray! We need you!" Somewhere, Echo heard a yelp. There was shuffling and finally, Pray arrived. They had claimed this section of the Cascade, which was a good thing. There were still sounds of battle everywhere else, which was a bad thing. Pray reached down, lifting her eyepatch. There were still tears in her eyes. "Where's Silence?" Echo inquired, she needed to get in contact with Lana and Cress, but they wouldn't answer their TB signals. "We got separated during the explosion, she's still alive though, I can sense her somewhere in the fort." Echo nodded, rising to her feet.

"Come on Flo, let's go cut this hydra off at the head." They had already lost half of their soldiers, some veterans, most of them rookies. "Let's go," Echo did not want to prolong this fight. The only way to free Doll, to end this, was to kill Messiah himself. "Sana, bring Anguis. She's the only leverage we have right now."

The explosion was powerful enough to rock the world, reduce everything to a bottomless crater. Wicked was panting as Baron Messiah stood over her, cruelty on the face no one but Anguis could see. "You thought that was enough to kill me? After your pitiful human died, this is the best you can manage?" Wicked panted, falling to the ground. She couldn't get up, she didn't have legs or arms anymore to hold herself up. It would take some time to regenerate, and she didn't have that time anymore. "I'll never accept someone like you." Wicked hissed, tears brimming in her eyes. "Humans and demons can live in peace! Even I know that, and I'm batshit insane!"

Baron Messiah did not seem to care about her words. "That power of yours is quite remarkable. If you agree to work with me, I won't tear off Queen Kitra's head once I capture her. I'll let her live." He knelt down then lifted Wicked up by the throat, his fingers closing around her throat like a vice. "You'll kill your old friends and comrades, and I'll spare Queen Kitra just for you." Wicked trembled, guilt in her eyes. She wanted to be strong, that was what she and Miranda strived for this whole time. But in the end, was there anything she could do? Did she have any cards left? "You're... filthy.... disgusting." Wicked sobbed, tears spilling to the ground. "But my loyalty to Queen Kitra won't let me say no...!"

..............

The surface was chaos. Due to Baroness Vaswald setting off an EMP Pulsar from inside the carriages, all signals were being blocked. Communication between the surface and the underground was impossible, Vaswald wouldn't let them coordinate properly. Felton, one of the rookies, fell to his knees as another round of laser blasts smashed against Leo's barrier. It was cracking, it wouldn't hold forever. "Wh-what's the point?!" Felton screamed in horror and fear, clutching his head. "What's the point in protecting the helicopters if there's not going to be anyone left to ride them?!" Cress and Christopher glanced over to him as the other rookies watched, the fear and terror spreading amongst them.

"I - when the emergency draft was made, I thought I could be brave. I thought I would give my blood for the sake of the Crown, and serve my country." He was one of the many volunteers who answered Queen Charlotte's call for arms, call for help. He, like many, would be sent to his death. "I didn't realize trying to protect other countrymen from being victims was to become one of the victims myself!" His floppy red hair was once comical but now it flopped in a depressed heap on his head, mirroring the expression on his face. The rookies began murmuring, losing their nerve. "I thought I was ready, but I didn't realize... just how scary it would be... to be torn to shreds by lasers..." Another round of laser blasts bombarded them, Leo's barrier trembling under the force of the attack. They couldn't even fight back, no one was able to get close enough to the flying carriages to even swing a sword.

"They won't last much longer." Juria said to Cress with a nervous frown. "We have to do something, Cress." Christopher nodded in agreement, putting a hand on the Acting Director's shoulder. "I could take a helicopter and challenge Baroness Vaswald directly to buy time for you to load the rest of the helicopters and get out of here safely." He said, bumping a fist on Excelsiur's sheath. "No." Cress's voice was soft as she stared at the carriage her sister was sitting in. "You wouldn't even get close." Chris sighed, shaking his head slightly. "Probably not. But at least you and anyone else you could escape with would still have your lives. As long as you're alive, we still have hope."

Cress let out a weak laugh, staring up at the sky. "Oh, Ellie, you always give me a hard time, don't you? It's so hard to try to outsmart you." She sat down on the rocky earth, smiling as she looked up towards Baroness Vaswald. "We used to play board games often. Chess, Checkers, even Snakes and Ladders. She always won every time, outsmarting me at every move. It kind of felt like this, the way she's blocked off every option for me." It felt as if there was nothing they could do at all, a cage created by her own twin sister's strategic mind. "Sorry Ellie, but I still know one way we can win." Cress smiled, grinning bravely. "Chris, gather the rookies. I'll have to give them a pep talk before we can begin."

...............

Wicked's explosion leveled three entire floors inside the fortress. Melody saw the brightness of the explosion destroy the stairs behind her, crumbling apart as the floors turned into rubble and dust. "What was... was that Wicked?" Melody gasped, clinging to Flame's hand to help her stand. "Is anyone... is anyone down there still alive?" She turned back, gulping. Silence had ordered her to try and find a way to reach the surface, to inform Cress that they managed to subdue Baroness Anguis but now it didn't seem to be possible. "W-we have to go back! We have to help them down there!" It was a long fall but Melody believed she could make it. "No, it's too dangerous Mel." Flame grabbed her arm, pulling her away from the edge. "We have to keep climbing. We don't even know if anyone's still alive down there."

Melody gulped, her heart quivering. Doll was down there, she knew that. Echo was there too. Her beloved sisters were trapped underneath and Melody was up here, safe from the explosion. "It'll be okay. Even if everything goes wrong... we can do what we did before." Flame said, smiling gently as he embraced his beloved. "We can run away from it all. We can leave behind the war, everything, and find a new future together." Their honeymoon journey around the world, visiting magical realms, it had been so much fun. But Melody wasn't strong enough to abandon her friends and family to die for the sake of a romantic escape. "If the choice is too hard for you, Mel, then I'll make it for you. We'll go to the surface. Then I'll kidnap you and we'll run away." Tears filled her eyes, making her vision blurry and she didn't know how to respond.

Everything felt as if time stopped. Melody stared in front of her as the rippling of the dress billowed out before her eyes. A beautiful arc of a sword's blade swinging, clashing against another sword pulled out from it's sheath. Another arc, another arc, and then Flame fell back, his arm sliced by the sword. "Fl-Flame!" Melody screamed, rubbing the tears out of her eyes. "Doll! What are you doing?!" There was pain on Doll's face but it quickly twisted and then became a neutral expression. Doll did not say a word as she continued her assault, pushing Flame back farther. Melody let out a screaming song but the blood bond made Doll immune to her powers. "N-no! Doll, you don't have to do this! Ayna told us that you weren't..." Her heart stopped when she saw the mark on her beloved sister's wrist.

"Back off, Mel! Just go! I - I can handle this! I'll catch up with you!" He blocked another attack then kicked at Doll, forcing her back. Still, he was outmatched and everyone here knew it. "I... no! What about running away together? This isn't the time for stupid sacrifices!" But how could she - Doll would never want to hurt her. Doll would back off if Melody got in the way. So she dashed between them, pushing Flame to the ground behind her, spreading her arms out. Doll's eyes went wide and she twisted her body mid swing but she couldn't stop it in time as the sword pierced through her sister's chest. Melody rose in the air as the sword pushed her up, pain filling her but she could barely feel it. She couldn't feel anything.

Melody's vision was blurry but still she smiled. "Good, you stopped." She said, not realizing what had happened. "Doll, we can help you. We'll take you to Flo, she can freeze the contract just like how... just like..." As Melody dissipated into a vibrant pearly orb, Doll let out a cry. "H-how? How could you?" Flame grabbed the soul piece as his arm was slashed to ribbons and strips of meat. "She was - she was your sister!" Tears filled his eyes, sorrow in liquid form decorating the shadowy halls. "She was... the love of my life." Doll let out a scream, finishing Flame off with a slash to the chest, then she fell to her knees, shaking uncontrollably.

........................

"She's surprisingly light." Sana said, lugging Baroness Anguis onto her back. Thinking about it, Anguis was actually pretty small. She probably used snakes to appear bigger and taller than what she truly was. "Are you doing okay, Flo?" Flo's steps were unsteady but she was shambling along as well as she could. She must have hit her head when Wicked blew herself up, it felt as if she had a bad concussion. "I'm doing my best." She admitted weakly, forcing herself to keep up with Echo's brisk pace. How many died? Did some of her friends already meet their ends at Wicked's hands?

Sana was making the path with a crayon so that they wouldn't lose their way. Pray stayed behind with Ariel, Cal, and Shadow, to try and find survivors and build a path out of the rubble that would let them get back to the surface. It was a long way up, but with enough manpower they would be able to make a ladder out of rocks. The minor demons scattered in fear as Echo, Flo, and Sana approached. With Anguis on their backs, the lesser troops no doubt knew they stood no chance against them. "Take us to Messiah." Flo ordered, wishing her head would be less foggy and light. "If you value your life." They cowered in fear, not wanting to die. "B-but he's not here! He l-left the Fortress before the fight even started!"

"Our lord Baron Messiah's already on the surface!"

Did he see right through them? Had someone betrayed them? How did Messiah know they were going to try to kill him at the bottom of Cascade Bau? "We should check just in case, but let's get back quickly." The throne room was up ahead. Once upon a time, Queen Kitra made it her abode. Maybe once this was over Kitra could return here again and rule over Paradise. Suddenly Sana's lips spread in a wide smile. She held her arm out, grinning. "I'm the traitor!" Sana declared, swinging her arm with the bracelet. The hallway around them shook as the metal rafters shattered, causing the hallway to cave in, burying Flo and Echo alive.

Acacia giggled, finding it easy to have possessed Sana like this. She was already tired out, a shy little girl like her was very easy prey. "Now, to go and kill Silence and Pray." Acacia hummed, walking back down the path. "They'll never suspect anything like this."
