"The world isn't all that different than it was 1000 years ago. The only difference is that only we know the truth."

a character in “Guardians: Out of Darkness”, as played by almostinsane

Description

Name: James Kaden
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Appearance: Image

James usually dressed in white and blue colors. He has black hair and blue eyes, the hair which appears to be silvery at times when he is using his element while his eyes glow faintly blue. He tends to keep his hair at medium length and doesn't comb it much. His most noticeable feature is a Japanese kanji tattooed to his cheek. This kanji, when translated, means "snow". Around his neck is a silver amulet with a rectangular pendant hanging off of it with markings that he cannot decipher.

Nationality: American; Norse descent.

Religion/Philosophy/Beliefs: "I don't know. Roman Catholic rituals work on a lot of demons. But Buddhists' and Pagan rites have worked a lot too. Is there a spot that says "I hate demons"? I'd pick that.

Personality: James is a somewhat twitchy and eccentric person. A guy can get like that when he's been on the run from demonic entities since he was 5 years old. He harbors a great hatred for demons and, from his past dealings with them, lies and deceit of any kind, though he has been forced to lie and deceive himself to keep himself and others safe. Overall, he is very experienced when it comes to combat, demonology, his element, healing, and magic rituals, but he is very innocent to the ways of the world. It is ironic that for a teen that hates demons so much, he knows more about them than he does about his own kind. James is very curious about normal life from movies to school to people his age. He is secretly lonely and longs for companionship and yet, he has a martyr-complex and doesn't share much about himself. In fact, he is the first to throw himself into danger and doesn't want anyone to risk their lives for him.

James has a secret love for video games and anime/manga. In fact, he loves them immensely and believes that Japan is the country most prepared for dealing with demons. He was very upset when he found out that Goku wasn't real when he was 10 years old. He has always wanted to attend a school and never tires of learning.

History: James grew up in a small town up in Alaska. In his early years, he was close to his parents and loved them more than anything in the world. His mom would bake cookies just for him and his dad and his dad spent his time studying the weather or teaching his son snow sports like skiing, snowboarding, and dog-sledding. James loved to play in the snow. For some reason, the cold always energized him. He didn't understand how it could be uncomfortable for anyone. Feeling the chilly wind blow at him was like breathing. He was four when his dad took him to an ice sculpture festival. When he got to try to make something out of a small bit of ice like the rest of the children. He hardly needed a chisel or hammer or an adult to help him. The ice just took the form he imagined when he touched it. His parents kept this a secret and he was always making them small ice figurines.

Then, when he was five, something happened. As he slept in his room, he dreamed that he was running in the field of snow during the 24 hour daylight Alaska had every year. He was laughing and having a snowball fight with other kids in his dream when the sky darkened with black clouds and a blizzard appeared. Suddenly, he was alone and cold. Truly cold like he had never been before. He thought he'd freeze to death when a strange man appeared. He worse a white suit and his teeth were all fangs and the man looked at him like he was prize chicken. He told James that he was his now. James told him he wasn't. He said he belonged to his parents. The man laughed and suddenly, ice began to encase him, starting at his feet and creeping all the way up his body. He screamed and called to his parents for help. The ice was just about to cover his face when he woke up in his room, only, his powers were out of control. There was a real blizzard in his house and he cried and tried to stop it, but by the time he did, everything but him was frozen. When he ran to his parents room, they too were frozen. He cried and yelled and he thought he heard a quiet laughter in his mind before running out his house.

For years, he ran, from social services, from demons, from friends and kind and mean adults alike. Slowly, as he had to fight demons again and again, he learned of the Guardians. From books in dusty old bookshops and libraries, from the demons vague references, to strange symbols in the architecture of the different cities he visited. One woman claiming to be a witch, but really just looked like an aging hippie lady told him about them: great warriors and the enemies of demon-kind. She directed him to La Sena, California where she said they had a compound. Nonetheless, despite his best efforts, he was followed.

Fears: Harming people with his powers; his parents blaming him for their deaths. Losing control of himself.
Likes: Reading, studying, experiencing city-life and normal, social activities, training, anime, manga video games
Dislikes: Close-minded people, arrogance, demons, people who commit the seven deadly sins (they attract demons even at the best of times), ignorance, and people getting hurt.

Element: Ice
Weapon of Choice: James prefers to use a Chinese jian about 22 inches in length. He conceals it in an enchant hilt that, to regular mortals, appears to be a tool belt.
Fighting Style: James relies on speed and precision when he fights. He prefers to think fast when fighting as opposed to simply overwhelming his opponent. He attempts to find his enemy's weak point and exploit it efficiently. Blended with his swordsmanship, he uses his element, ice, quite well and will at times create a shield with his magic when he's on the defensive, though constant hammering of that shield will exhaust him quickly.
Magic?: Surprisingly, James possesses at least some magic. He is able to perform simple rituals and healing as well as create shields. He isn't able to use other elements, but the demons he has met have seemed interested in his powers.

Weaknesses/Personality Flaws: James blames himself for his parents' deaths. He has been bearing this burden for longer than he even knew them. Thus, he tends to put himself in danger rather than let others do so.

So begins...

James Kaden was no stranger to running long distances. He didn't have much money or any sort of vehicle. He didn't even have a bicycle. Thus, when he was chased, which was more often than he would have liked, he had only his own two legs and his luck to depend on. Nonetheless, after running two miles in blistering heat that was better suited for midsummer than autumn, James was tired and soaked with sweat. Heat definitely wasn't his element. If it was winter, he'd have excaped by now, but a roar that sounded far too close told him that the being chasing after him was at least five feet away, maybe ten if he was lucky.

The demon looked to be a cross between a hyena and a coyote with an unnatural amount of teeth in its mouth that looked like each was stuffed in among the others to fit as many of them in as tiny space as possible, not to mention it reached a head over him on its hind legs. James had been hoping that when he entered the city, it would back off, return to whatever wasteland that it inhabited before it caught his scent, but no such luck. He scowled and looked over his shoulder, the demon's yellow eyes wide in anticipation. It must not have eaten in a long time or it took some perverse pleasure in the hunt. James wouldn't discount either possibility.

He glanced back and gathered energy in his palm before thrusting it behind him, sending a pair of sharp, icy spikes at the beast, but it didn't even move out of the way as the ice hit it, its body transmuting into sand where it was hit, his attack passing harmlessly through it before it reformed. He cursed quietly. He was too weak now to defeat it. Normally, a demon at this level wouldn't be a problem for him, but he had encountered it in the desert outside the city and this unnatural heat wave was augmenting it. Combine that with his natural element and the fact that he had been traveling two days straight without any sleep and James knew he was in trouble.

"Give up, ice-human! There's nowhere to go!" the it screeched out and idly, James wondered what the people around him were seeing and hearing. A rabid hyena? And escaped animal from the zoo? For the thousandth time, he cursed humanity's blindness before running towards the edge of town. If he had to die, then at least he'd get the demon away from other people. As he was running, he spotted something. A high wall separating what looked to be a series of buildings from the rest of the city towered over him like a castle's defenses. Even better, it was one of those old walls that had vines growing along it. he smiled and quickly grabbed a vine, pulling himself up as he scaled the rest of the wall frantically, using the plants like stepping stones. He didn't look back. He knew that the demon was climbing after him, but he was faster. He was just at the top of the wall when he cried out in surprise and pain.

"Aggh!! he groaned, biting his tongue before he could shout even more. It felt like a railroad spike had been driven through his ankle and he looked down to find his left foot in the demon's mouth. He grimaced slightly, but drew his jian from his side and stabbed downward at it. Its eyes widened in surprise and he saw he drew a little blood before it dissolved itself in sand again to avoid injury. Quickly, he jumped off, making sure to land on his good leg before looking around. It appeared that he was on a campus of some sort. He was not far from a dormitory. He grimaced as he staggered forward. How was he going to explain this?

A girl was approaching him. That was just what James was afraid of. He glanced behind him and heard the demon scaling the wall step by step, as though the the vines confused it. They probably did, considering it had lived in the desert. Lush greenery was alien to it. His icy blue eyes met the girl's glassy ones. They, along with her small frame, made her look like a porcelain doll, but that was irreverent now. The girl was in danger and she didn't even know it. He met her eyes and said seriously, "If I told you, you wouldn't believe me. Blind as humanity is by its preconceived notions of "logic" or "reason." Just know that I'm being chased by something and if you don't want to die with me, you should go."

As he was delivering his lecture, he felt some sort prickling on his skin, as though his environment had changed. He glanced around and, sure enough, he caught sight of a bird halted in mid-flight and yet still in the air. He glanced at the girl curiously. That meant... No. It was too much to hope for. He had searched for them everywhere for longer than he liked to remember. Yet, he had to ask her. If she knew anything about the guardians...

"You have manipulated time. Are you one of them? Are they training you? I knew that they were supposed to be in this town, but I thought they'd be gone, like everywhere else. What is your name?" he added hastily, reminding himself of his manner. He hadn't been surprised like this in months.

And yet, more people arrived in their little bubble, despite the spell. One was an older black kid and the other a kid that wouldn't look out of place in a slasher film, but he knew better than to judge by appearances.

"More? No... I'll be fine. I can't see anyone. Too many questions. If you don't know how to fight, then you should leave, but if you're a Guardian, it's an honor to meet you both. And if you must know, I'm fleeing a demon from the very depths of hell," he told them hastily before glancing at yet another kid, this one that he couldn't tell was male or female.

"I was unaware this place belonged to you. If it is the place I think it is, it belongs to the Guardians," he told him sternly, put off by his rudeness.

"A demon. It it's lower in its hierarchy, but the heat wave has strengthened it. Ambushed me in the desert so I had to use all my energy getting out of its element," James told the silvery-haired boy. He frowned at the girl's words and suppressed the urge to smack his head. So these weren't Guardians. So much for finding a safe haven. He groaned as she climbed the wall. Did she really think she could defeat it on her own? As soon as it managed to find its way up the wall it would kill her. He heard a crash and realized the demon was pounding on the wall now and by the sound of it, it had increased its size. Joy.

"Whatever she just did made it angry," he noted, spotting cracks beginning to appear on the wall. He grimaced and picked up his jian, rubbing two fingers up and down the flat of the sword, giving it a faint blue glow. He tried to fight the subsequent lightheadedness. At the black kid's words, he smiled slightly. Of course, he didn't believe him. No one ever did. He seemed to notice the creature, however. No matter, he wasn't going to argue semantics with him. He held it up to him and the silvery-haired kid.

"I've infused my jian with the Ice Element. The creature transmutes itself into sand whenever it feels threatened, but it is not infallible and can only stay in that form for a few seconds. If you manage to stick this through its heart or head before it changes into sand or right after it reforms, it should kill it."

He smiled slightly, "Or, if you think I'm delusional and the creature a normal beast, it should be killed all the same."

The wall began to collapse and he turned to the girl that had perched herself on it, his once wry tone filled with concern, "Get away now!"

At the silvery-haired boy's words, James nodded at him in acknowledgement. If it weren't for him and the others, he'd be dead by now. Gratefully, he took his weapon back and sheathed it. If one looked at his side, it would appear that it disappeared into an ordinary pencilcase. Yet, if one looked closer and concentrated, they'd be able to make out the sword sheath covered in archaic runes that was truly there. At Leon's and Dante's words, he nodded, actually relieved that they were asking what this all was instead of panicking or wanting to call the police as most people were inclined to do.

"My name is James Kaden and I've been able to see these things since I was five years old," his expression darkened, as though reliving an unpleasant memory, "But I am not important. These things are demons, devils, Shaiten, oni, furries, succubi, unclean spirits, whatever you want to call them. From my understanding, they appear in every religion or culture somewhere in their stories. I do not know where they come from, but they are certainly not from this world. They are envious of humans and despise us. Most want to enslave or destroy us and either do away with the world along with us or make it theirs. So, they take hosts. Usually, they prefer a human, but they would possess an animal if they have no other choice. My guess for this demon was that his host had already lived passed its prime, but its own will kept it together. It isn't the most dangerous, though. The most dangerous are the ones that take a human host. That is how I first encountered one.

"A demon is able to reach into this world through the subconscious mind. They enter dreams and either coerce or dominate their host until they possess them. I had a nightmare of one when I was five years old. He almost destroyed me in my own mind, but he wasn't counting on me waking up," he finished bitterly. Miserably, he snapped his fingers, a visible spark of blue appearing before fading out.

"My powers awakened in that moment, as though in self-defense. It froze everything in my house, including my parents... I didn't stick around. All humans are connected to an element, some more strongly than others. A few even possess magic, which is different than controlling your natural element. There is a group of humans called Guardians who have dedicated their lives to destroying and imprisoning every last demon and prevent them from destroying humanity. I have been searching for them since I first learned about them. This place was supposed to be their headquarters," he gestured around them at the buildings, "But I guess it isn't anymore. I do not know if they still exist anymore. According to an old record I found in one of their abandoned outposts, their numbers were becoming fewer and fewer. Less and less people believed in demons anymore. Less had the potential. Meanwhile, some were killed or possessed. And others just left, never to be seen again."

He paused for a moment.

"I don't know who the demon was referring to and I do not know if Lucifer is real. The Guardians seemed to think so. But if he is, he's probably preparing to enter this world and bring the rest in with him. And if he does, we will all die slowly and painfully. Demons do not know mercy. Only cruelty."

"No. I'm fine. I'd rather not have the nurse ask questions like who I am and how I got injured, but thank you. Really," James told Duranni with a nod of thanks before smiling over at Eyes slightly. She didn't look too pleased, but at least she healed his ankle. At her words, he frowned slightly. Was she seriously thinking what he thought she was thinking? No. He couldn't risk her life after she just helped save him. He couldn't risk any of these kids' lives.

"Well, if we can't find the Guardians, then I'll have to find out what they knew. How to fight the demons and win," he told her as he stood up and glanced around campus thoughtfully, "The Guardians had their main headquarters here. They had to leave something behind. And when I find it, I'll start hunting down any demon I can find and send them back where they came from. Please, just, forget about everything I told you. You'd just get hurt. It's better to live a normal life while you still have one."

He glanced around and he hoped his facial expression conveyed his meaning. This wasn't a game. Their powers were real, but they weren't superheroes. It wasn't some happy-go-lucky adventure. He had seen demons kill countless people again and again.

"I don't. I was hoping that you'd tell me. You guys do goto this school, after all. Surely one of you have seen it somewhere. It shouldn't be hidden too much. The whole point of it being a coded symbol means that it should be in plain view, unless the Guardians were really paranoid," James mused before raising an eyebrow at another person's question. He looked around thoughtfully. There were a lot of people here that noticed the demon. Could it be that the Guardians' Sanctum naturally attracted them? Or were some of them demons? He had seen demons take every shape and form, even among normal, everyday humans. That was one of their chief dangers.

"I have faced many demons in my life. How do you know so much? This isn't the first demon you've seen? Or are you just guessing?" he asked suspiciously before moving on to address his other points, "We will have to train hard before we are ready. I still have much to learn myself. While we do that, should we ever encounter a demon, we'll have to be prepared. Demons have certain weaknesses: Holy Chants, prayers, holy water, certain herbs and plants, or even metals like iron or minerals like salt. We will have to study these weaknesses and stock up on them."

Again, he looked at the others thoughtfully. Most of them looked like normal teenagers to him, but a few stood out. One girl, for example, wouldn't have looked out of place in a knightly order, which was a good thing, he thought. She at least looked like she knew how to fight. Did anyone see what appeared on his paper, though? The Sanctum would have to be their first stop, he decided. If they were determined to put their lives in danger, they at least needed a sanctuary.

"The door should have been here from the beginning. What is the oldest building you know of?"

James walked through the halls with a frown, looking uncomfortably at his new clothes. One of the others had claimed that he was a cousin of theirs and somehow, someone managed to find a guy in town that made a living out of forgery. Usually drivers' licenses and ID's for kids that wanted to get into bars or clubs. Still, he hadn't batted an eyelash at a birth certificate, false school history, a social ID card, a driver's license, and a few other things he did not know the name of. Of course, he had demanded more money than he probably made a year and James was forced to hand over all of his meager funds, while the others pinched in as well. That made him extremely uncomfortable. He didn't like being in other people's debt, particularly when he didn't know them much at all. That also meant, of course, that he couldn't keep anyone out of the fight. No matter what he said, they were coming along for the ride. Fools.

With jolt, he stopped, right in front of the wall. He was in the musty basement of an old, decrepit building that was mostly used for storage. He and the others had been searching for the gateway that hid the Guardians' Sanctuary after finding out this was the oldest building on the grounds. At least, the oldest one that wasn't torn down. In front of him stared the very same symbol that he and the others had been combing the place for. He grinned slightly. The symbol was distorted, as though it was a puzzle with its pieces in the wrong place. He wondered.

He pressed his hand against it. Tiles. Of course. He just had to reassemble the symbol. Slowly, he began to turn it, his face splitting in an even wider grin. As he got to work, he texted to the others with one hand. I got it! It's on the east side, by the classroom collection of old tribal masks. He continued, first assembling the bottom and then the top until at last, it stood before him. Excitement welled up in his stomach. This was it.

He pressed the stone symbol and the wall seemed to just melt away. He stepped forward, heedless of the crucifixes that dotted the floor tiles or the scribbling script of the Hebrew and Arabic names for God. He stopped, however, when he felt point of a spear below his float. He looked up and gasped. Before him stood the statue of an angel, its foot upon the head of a dark, but handsome angel with black wings. He recognized its pose. The spear should be pointing at the neck, but the angel was directing its spear at him.

"St. Michael. The Archangel," he gasped. This was it. The entrance hall. If he managed to get past the first defense...

There were a few things that sucked about being lost. The first thing was obviously one was lost. The second was being lost and alone, which shouldnā€™t have been so bad in a school full of people. But Enya had this habit of getting lost in the most crowded of places. Glancing around, the red head, sighed, glancing back towards the map in her hands. It wasnā€™t helping her situation, if anything it was making it worse. She couldnā€™t read the things to save her life. So deciding that the best course of action was to just walk around until she found someone was the only plan she had in mind.

Then again, the building that she was at was pretty desolate. She hadnā€™t seen or even heard a sound. ā€œI wonder if I could find my way back to the dorm.ā€ She shook her head knowing it was hopeless on that cause too. She couldnā€™t remember the way sheā€™d come. Standing up from where sheā€™d been sitting, she rubbed the back of her neck actually wishing she had a hair bow. It was hot. And she loved the heat because it never seemed to bother her unless her hair was on her neck as it was now. Shaking her head she lifted the locks up allowing for some air and then let it back down. The copper strands reached the top of her medium green tank top easily. Now she was at least glad for the thin clothes. The tank top and jean shorts helped a lot but the socks didnā€™t. Too bad she was never abandoning the hiking boots.

Deciding that inside the buildings would probably be a better idea, she headed inside. And it was a lot cooler. She smiled lightly to herself as she looked around. She had to find someone in this place. ā€œHello?ā€ She called out. She could hear her faint echo bouncing off the empty walls. ā€œGreatā€¦ā€ She muttered to herself as she wandered further into the building. Every now and then she would stop and look at some of the stuff becoming fascinated with a piece here and there.

After searching the whole upper floors, Enya decided to check the lower levels not holding out much luck. It seemed she managed to find her way to a building no one went to. Heading down she stopped a few more times to look at things before making it to the basement. She was just getting ready to turn around and head back up when she saw sight of the male. Finally, someone.

ā€œHello?ā€ She called out lowly as she moved closer. That was when she saw the statue of the angel. She stopped walking and looked at it and then the boy. It looked particularly dangerous for him to be standing that close to the spear. But something inside her gut was going off. Something was off. She got the feeling every now and then but she could never explain it. All she knew was that something was right either with the situation or the other person himself. ā€œUhā€¦ is this a bad timeā€¦ Iā€™m kinda lostā€¦ā€ She whispered slightly as she kept looking at the statue and then the male.

John eyed the statue curiously. There just had to be a way to get past it. If this was the entrance to the Sanctuary, then Guardians had to pass it by all the time, at least, when they were here. Slowly, he had been convinced that there weren't any Guardians anymore from not being able to find them and finally, seeing no one here, at their supposed headquarters. Nonetheless, he didn't let himself dwell on that disappointment. Instead, he stared at the statue curiously. He stepped back and was relieved to see the angel reposition its spear at its classical position over Satan's neck. At the voice of the new girl, however, he almost stumbled.

How did she sneak up on him like that? He must have been too busy thinking to notice someone behind him. If she had been a demon, he'd have been a goner. Nonetheless, he found it difficult to explain why he was here of all places, "I'm, uh, just looking for something. What are you doing here?"

At her answer, he nodded, "Lost, huh? I'm new here too..."

He was relieved to see Eyes and Leon, however. He rolled his eyes at the silvery haired male, "It was a booby trap, obviously. And there are obviously a few more defenses. There should be a system to get past them, however."

He sighed as he heard Eyes and then the new girl talk. He spoke, "It's sort of a secret. You wouldn't believe us if we told you."

Wouldnā€™t believe it even if she were told? It wasnā€™t like she hadnā€™t heard that line before. Course, she could have said the same to them about some things. Could it be that we are actually speaking about the same things? Enya sighed lightly as she glanced around still not liking the way the other girl was staring at her.

ā€œI can see Iā€™m not wantedā€¦ā€ The line pointed clearly to the female who kept glaring at her. She knew she should try to get to stay. But that was rude and she couldnā€™t be noticeably rude to people. She turned and started to head out of the room, back to the heat and back to being lost.

Before she left she turned and glanced back at the statue. ā€œThere would probably be a switch somewhere to get it to move. If the spear is moved when you get close, then the switch is somewhere else.ā€ It was a logical solution, one anyway, to their problem. ā€œThat or you have to risk life and limb to get through it because the switch is on or near the angel.ā€ She sighed lightly.

The copper haired teen knew she couldnā€™t out rightly ask what they meant by demons, or rather what the girl had meant by demons. She clearly didnā€™t want her around. The way to stay seemed to be the boy she first saw in the room. ā€œSo what did she mean by demons?ā€ She wanted to see where they went with it. If those were the things sheā€™d seen since fifth grade.

Leon scratched his head at what was being said between the others. He gave a small laugh. "Hehe. Um that is a really good point." He said as he moved past the girl. He started to examine the angel. It was quite detailed, the line looked perfect in almost every way. 'Wow who ever did this must have been doing this for quite some time.' Leon thought as he moved his head to get a better look at the statue. He took a few steps back to get in line with the others. "I can't really see anything in there." he said while shrugging.

He looked at the other girl and smiled. "Oh i'm sorry I didn't catch your name. What is it?" He didn't want to be rude but he was just curious. He examined the girl to just see what she really looked like. He started to look at her up and down and then turned around. 'Wow that was rude.' He thought. After a few moments he turned back to face her. "I'm Leon, in case you are wondering." He said as he looked to James to see what was to be done next.

"So James what is it that we do next?" He was kinda hoping he would say 'Oh you know nothing and not venture into the dark room with an angel that wants to kill us.' But Leon knew better than to hope for that. He then walked over the the angel and began to examine it one more time. "It feels like I missed something looking at this." He said out loud but not to anyone in particular. He stayed in a crouched position until he was told what was the next thing that they had to do in order to go further into this little cave.
