Description

Ember

Image

Nicknames: The Wraith- She was nicknamed this by most of the people working in the facility. This was after her first mysterious kill, and the way she comes across as haunting and silent.
Age: 18
Gender: Female

Mutation(s): Elemental control of air. She uses it to stifle sound and give her bursts of speed, making her quick and light on her feet. She can also resuscitate people from accidents such as drowning or electrocution (or her other power). This comes with a cost though, as she must kill another to bring someone back and it only can be done approximately an hour after death. Her other, darker gift includes removing the breath of a person. She needs to be close to do this, around fifteen centimeters, however the effect is rather haunting. The person simply goes still, and the life leaves them. This skill is also very difficult to get right and requires a lot of concentration. Often mistakes can be made, leading to only unconsciousness. This could be due to a disruption, or distraction such as pain or fear. Ember also requires her mouth to open in the process, so being gagged or having her mouth forced shut will render her ability useless. A considerably less deadly version of this skill is being able to temporary silence someone- this only lasts a minute at most otherwise she has to use her full skill.

Appearance

Ember has long, dark hair that reaches just past her waist. It is always dead straight, with long bangs at the side and a long front fringe. Her features are soft and small with the exception of her eyes. She is rather small for her age, and extremely thin and delicate looking. She has a slender frame and is quite weak physically, though she makes up for this with her gift. Ember has dark, black irises. They are usually quite cold, but often soften for people she cares for. When she is angry they darken into an auburn and when she is frightened they lighten to grey. For all she knows they change to other strong emotions, but so far those are the only ones she is aware of. Ember has always been thought of as rather stunning and fragile. This only helps her use her ability. It allows her to get close enough to steal their breath away. She looks so innocent, people often under estimate her.

Eye Color(s): Black that flashes to crimson when angry and lighten to grey when frightened.
Hair Color: Black
Height: (put here)
Other features: She has a thin scar along the length of her collarbone and small curved scars on her palms from where she has dug her nails in.
Clothing: Ember tends to wear darker clothing, which shows off her slender figure. Her favorite still is the Gothic Victorian style, with tightly fitted black corsets and rather full, and short skirts. She also enjoys wearing long black gloves reaching past her elbows. Even though this is her favorite type of clothing, she also wears other styles, including slimming white/ red dresses. She is never caught wearing shoes, preferring to be light and bare footed.

Personality

Ember takes much after the wind she manipulates. Silent and swift, she prefers to observe. Her personality is quiet and rather withdrawn. She tends to be merciless, and rather cold in her own way. After so many years of pain she's learn to remove herself from others feelings. She also has a very gentle side, though it is rarely seen and usually only is shown to the very few that she finds herself attached to. Similar to her element, Ember also contains a deep rage, and can become quite a dangerous enemy. She uses rather harsh sarcasm when angry, and her eye colour changes slightly to a dark auburn. Other than that she is rather stony and silent. She is often calculating and her kills are always clean and unexplained. She comes across as a villain through her emotionless reaction to the pain and suffering around her, but really this is just a result of a hard life and a broken spirit.

Favorite Color: Black
Likes: classical music, running, outdoors, breeze, storms
dislikes: stillness, noise, arrogance, recklessness, people
Weakness: Physically she is very weak. Due to her personality she often ends up isolating herself and is quite lonely. She is fragile emotionally, she won't show it, but she's very broken.
Fears: Being gagged, silenced. Physical abuse. Water- it doesn't have any air.

So begins...

Ember stared out of the glass silently observing the usual procedures of the facility. Her gloved hands were placed neatly in her lap as she sat on the edge of the slab in her room. She watched the usual struggles of mutants failing to realise it was pointless.
She'd long since got past that stage. It hadn't been a quick process but after a few months of consistent torture she'd given up and learned to accept her lot. It had been a while since they'd physically forced her to do something, now she just complied, which had given her an infamous reputation. Ember would have grimaced at this thought, if she'd been able to move mouth. This was one of the few things she had put up a long good fight for- the awful metallic mask. It prevented her opening her mouth, thereby saving the guards until they had time to play with her gift.

Ember tried not to think of the other thing she'd struggled for and failed.

Out of all the mutants in the facility, Ember felt she was the most alone. For her it was not a us and them feeling. Yes, she was a mutant, but she'd killed many of them and after that no one in their right mind wanted to be near her. Ember told herself she didn't care, and did a darn good job of showing it. There was no point in self-pity, everyone here had their struggles. And so she lived, or should she put it: survived.

Just like so many today, soon she'd be taken to her 'training'. Since her submission they'd realised she would be more useful if trained. None of them dared assume she wouldn't take out one of them out if she had the chance, but she had made the perfect threat and executioner.

There was a few options for her training today. Possibly she'd be put another stupid maze again and timed to see how well she could use the air to move faster. If she'd had the chance she would have told them to give up- she didn't have the reflexes to stop herself from smashing into walls. Really that ability was only useful in long stretches of open areas. The other option was another silence test. Make her practice silencing all sorts of noises and people. To honest, this one was rather fun. That was when she succeeded. Until then it just gave Ember splitting headaches as she couldn't stand the high decibel sounds.
And then there was her least favourite. Which she refused to think about.

Suddenly two guards appeared peering in through the glass at her. She eyed the younger one. He obviously hadn't been here before. Or at the very least she hadn't met him.

"So this is our Wraith." The older one droned to the younger one.

The young man leaned in closer to get a better look, before raising an eyebrow.

"She doesn't look like much. You're telling me she's responsible for the cadavers last week?"

Ember saw red, and her eyes followed suit. The younger one stepped back a few paces.

"Pretty eyes eh?" The other guard chuckled as he entered the pin for her room, before turning back to Ember. "Right you know the drill, follow on behind."

As the door opened, Ember padded forward on her bare feet following the guards down the corridor. After that the guards simply ignored her, continuing their conversation.

"So today basically we are going to show you how to get info you want out of em." The guard jerked a thumb at Ember without so much glancing at her. "Wraith's been useful in that respect, as I was telling you before she got the knack for getting em to speak, little traitor. All the others seem to group together, you know, being the same kind of animals I suppose. Her? She's a lone ranger."

Ember's irises melted to light grey before quickly returning to black. So it was to be the worst kind of test. Typical.
As they walked past a young boy with piercing blue eyes, Ember saw his irises turned to red. Her eyes widened slightly, so she was not the only one with colour-changing irises. Then as they returned back to blue, Ember carefully replaced her neutral mask. Normally she made a point to ignore specifics about people. It made it easier. Now she carefully avoided his eyes. At the very least he'd probably know somewhat of some of the deaths she was responsible for, at worst he could be the next one.

Ember followed the guards deep into the facility. The coppery odour of blood mingled with the fear in the air as they drew closer to their destination. She hated this place. It wasn't so much the screams, the torture or death's presence. By now Ember had long since grown indifferent to that. It was the overwhelming presence of her memories. Most of the time she managed to keep them far from her consciousness, locking them deep within. But here it was as though only a thin sheet of glass kept them in her subconscious.

Sure she was always aware of them, despite popular psychology repression was not a logical occurrence. But they weren't nearly as real as they were here. Nonetheless with great skill and practice Ember managed to keep them in control, though their forbidding presence remained a heavy burden.

Finally the trio stopped outside one of the doors. The guard outside was watching a monitor of the interior. There was a young woman lying face-down on the examination table. The usual results of unanswered questions were stamped in her back in the form of lacerations, burns and soft-tissue bruising. As Ember watched another glowing metal bar was applied just below the woman's neck resulting in a hoarse scream.

One of her guards opened the door and the three filed in. The older man started to unlock Ember's metal mask when the young guard let out a gasp.

"It's alright" The first chuckled. "That man outside will watch us. If she decides to take one of us out, they'll simply force her to kill another mutant to bring us back."

And then the barbaric thing was off, and for a moment Ember sighed in pleasure at the relief of being able to move her jaw.

"…We're running out of patience with you." Ember was brought back to reality by the scientists snarled words. "Tell us where you sent your daughter, or we'll let the wraith loose."

She couldn't help but roll her eyes at that. If they really let her loose none of them would ever wake up again. The woman on the table let out a sob but otherwise remained silent. Ember kept her face carefully neutral and leaned against the wall, arms folded against her chest.

The scientist unchained the woman from the table before dragging her across to a small pool of water. Her moans of pain were cut short as her head was plunged in. After a few weak struggles she finally was still and her dragged out. A small child was brought in, no more than five. He started to sob when he saw all the blood.

Ember was shoved forward by the guard causing her eyes to flame to red. The kid let out a squeal of terror. Ignoring it, she knelt in front of him, her hands on his shoulders, keeping him in place. His quick short breaths begged her to take them, and take them she did. She let his little body fall to the floor, before crossing over to the woman. Without a hint of emotion she blew gently on the woman's face and watched while she coughed the water out of her lungs.

"And now you will answer the question. Either that or we drown you again and kill another kid to bring you back until you do." The scientist gestured to the dead boy. "How many kids will you kill attempting to prevent us finding your daughter?"

The fight was over, Ember knew it. It was one thing to remain silent and endure your own pain, quite another to destroy someone else's life. And no one liked seeing dead kids. Between sobs the woman told them what she knew. They always did in the end. Before she knew it, Embers metal mask was replaced and she was being led back outside.

The younger one looked at her with a new sense of awe.

"She just killed that kid, no question?"

"Well in my opinion mutants don't have true feelings, and she certainly doesn't have any emotion."

Ember's irises boiled to a deep crimson, glaring at him with pure hatred.

"That is aside from anger." He laughed. "Oh and fear. Though you don't like to show it much, your eyes are not very good at hiding it, eh?"

If it had done her any good she would have torn his throat out at that point, but she simply turned away until the guards lost interest and started moving off.

She was surprised to find that she was taken into a large white room. Normally she was just taken straight back into her cell. There was already a young girl in here, though she didn't seem entirely 'there'. Probably one of the drugged up ones Ember decided, quickly averting her eyes, once again trying to avoid any communication with anyone else.

The two guards remained close, probably more for her own protection than anything else. She'd had many attempts on her life by angry mutants. This coming to mind, she glanced around uneasily wondering what exactly the facility owners had in stall for her.

Darkness encased her as they went through the stronghold that held the worst kinds of mutants you could think of. Reyna was among them, with her blood manipulation she was classified as dangerous despite her young age and weak stature. They stopped the gurney in front of a smaller room with metal slots in the wall. Reyna was unstrapped, the gloves on her hands removed. "No, I don't want to kill anyone else!" Panic flooded her veins as she sat up and clutched her hands to her chest, refusing to move from the portable bed. "Calm down, you're taking a shower. You wanted that right?"

Shower. It was a word she had not heard in a very long time, most days they simply sprayed her down with a hose if she got too dirty. "Yes!" Reyna hopped down from the gurney and went inside quickly, a bar of soap and a small bottle of shampoo was handed to her upon entry and she stripped herself down, stepping under the tepid water and relishing the feeling of dirt and blood running down the drain. Reyna scrubbed herself raw, wanting to get it all off before she was told that her time was up and the water turned off, hot air suddenly attacking and blinding her from all directions.

The room was spinning when Reyna opened her eyes, she slowly forced air into her lungs and leaned against one of the metal stalls to get her bearings before attempting to take a step. A new pair of white clothes was shoved into her arms and Reyna dressed quickly, the too big sleeves lopping over her shoulders. Hands clamped down on her arms and she was promptly dragged to a new room where two other mutants were sitting.

Shyly, Reyna sat down on a bench opposite of the others and placed her hands in her lap. She didn't have to hurt these people right? This wasn't another test? "Um... Hello." Reyna attempted to make conversation despite the fact that one seemed to have found the rabbit hole and the other had some sort of metal brace wiring her mouth shut. Maybe she should simply remain silent....
