Name
Katiana Grace Brokenborough, or as she's known in the fashion world with her up-and-coming line, House of Kat, Kitty B

Age & Grade
17 & Rising Junior

Number of Years at Laurel
Eleven years, she's been attending Laurel since kindergarten

Sexual Orientation
Heteroflexible, while some don't believe that things like preferences are real, Kat likes to believe that she's simply a sexually fluid being and while she does prefer lovers/significant others of the male variety, if the match proves useful - whether to her social/financial or emotional needs - then she's not against being with another female. It simply takes a very interesting situation and person.

Group?
Gifted

Talent
Fashion
As much as it might be easy to assume that Kat comes from wealth due to the quality and brilliance found in even her loungewear, she is not. She is just remarkably gifted when it comes to needle and thread, and it all started in her grandmother's living room, fumbling over her tiny fingers and enduring prick after prick of the very thin needle until she got it right. With her line having debuted when she was thirteen, and lauded for its maturity and complexity in lacework and embellishments, Kat is the person people come to when they need a quick fix or work out a design for a big event. She charges, of course, for the bigger projects, but a stitch fix - especially with how second nature it is to have a needle and thread in her fingers - is nothing but a word.

Can Seem Intense and Intimidating "My Grams' pastor always said that I was like her, mildly non-threatening, but with a take-no-nonsense attitude that made even her - a grown ass woman - want to come correct." || Mysterious, At Times. Hard To Figure Out What She's Feeling IF She Doesn't Say. || Resting Bitch Face || Slow To Anger, But Possesses Near Violent Rage Once Pressed || Can Appear Cold and Sometimes Unfeeling, And Gets Hurt When Those She Considers Friends Assume That She Is Those Things || Chocolate, Especially Brownies || Vindictive

Secrets
Mother || When most people think of Kat's parental guardian or the person to call if something was wrong with her, the first person that would come to mind would be her grandmother, not her mother. In fact, unless you had access to Kat's paperwork and noted that her mother was her second emergency contact, you wouldn't know that her mother was alive and that is how Kat likes it. It goes without saying that Kat and her mother don't get along; what needs to be said is the why, and the why is that while her mother may not have ever placed a hand on her save for two times in all of Kat's seventeen years of living, emotional abuse goes a long way. That seeming unfeeling-ness that people notice, the inability to truly get under her skin as if she were a robot that didn't know what more vulnerable human emotions were - that is a learned behavior, developed as protection from her mother's negligence and scorn due to Kat's darker complexion and who her father was. It never mattered that Kat's other features were all her mom and grandmother, or that she tried so hard - especially with constructing her line - to prove that she could be good enough for the woman who birthed her. She was just never good enough and at some point, the little girl seeking her mother's approval wrapped herself in a shell of cool indifference and sensual intimidation.

ImageImagePersonality
{ Intense, Vindictive, Sensual, Self-Assured, Perceptive, Loving }

There is no denying the sheer raw intensity that lay dormant in Katiana Brokenborough's deceptively petite frame. In all things, she is barely restrained energy, moderating her physical, mental and emotional strength as she sees fit. There is no controlling or tempering her unless she gives you that power, and God - there is something magnificent about a woman who knows she has power - not because of the influence of others or a family name, but from her own merit, accomplishments, and what she brings to the table. It should come to no surprise, then, that peers and adults alike can find Katiana intimidating, intense even. Though packed in a small package, her very pores leak out a dangerous mix of alluring and frightening energy. On one hand, with the very fact that Kat walks with a naturally sensual yet at-ease switch to her hips and her head stagnant in its imposingly upright position, there's no denying the magnetism of this dark-complected beauty. She knows she's a hard-worker, knows that every praise and compliment to her person and talent has been earned, and that she is worthy, even if there is a dark voice at the back of her head that says otherwise. It's enough to have one so caught on her orbit that you hardly notice how fully ensnared you are until she flashes a brilliant smile your way or has you pinned to her bed. On the other hand, such carefully orchestrated control is undoubtedly frightening. Kat is one of the few people you don't want to get into a staring contest with because she will surely win - and it won't be just because she has stared at you unflinchingly as she is wont to do in the face of opposition or anyone who dares presume to have any sort of power over her. It is because of her uncanny ability to read a situation and a person down to their very seams, penetrating and so damn intent on finding out your truths that you almost want to hide. She had to learn to be this way, a survival instinct in order to prepare herself to be hurt so that she can hurt as well, if needed. This heady mix of fearing whether or not she'll punch you, tear you a part in the bedroom, or even both is possibly one of the many actual reasons why Kat is, simply put, one of the few students at Laurel you don't want to fuck with.

What further exacerbates the intriguing mystery that is Katiana is the resting bitch face she possesses and the fact that she has remained a bit of an enigma, even to those closest to her. While there is no denying when there's a glimmer of amusement shining in Kat's eyes or when she's point blankly judging you, there also needs to be an understanding that this sparsely satisfactory insight into her emotions is allowed, not because of your own keen observation skills, but due to Kat's own allowance of it. Kat learned at a young age how to veil her emotions - which is partly why she has no choice but to exert her energy into kickboxing, an outlet for the more violent energy she's simmering with - and it is usually of her own volition that anyone sees the full depth of her emotions. Mostly because she feels much more than she lets on. Kat knows that people think there is something wrong with her - that it is strange that while someone else will freak out at the sign of blood or an injury, she can stare, straight-faced and focused on helping to the best of her abilities, when on the inside, there's a knot of anxiety just waiting to be acknowledged. That there's a bubble of genuine joy just waiting to burst and spread through her entire being when she finds herself surrounded by friends and all of them just being in their element, being happy and safe and loved. Which is the main thing she wants: to be surrounded by love. As much as Kat finds pleasure and amusement in people being afraid of not coming correct when they're around her, as much as she revels in the fact that though her financial background left much to be desire to wealthier and more popular classmates, she's still considered a force to be reckoned with when crossed - Kat wants to be able to trust giving herself to others and having them do the same. To know that she's enough for them and that it would be vice versa, because as long as someone is upfront with Kat, she'll be willing to do the same. Willing to explain away concerns about her letting her phone ring for too long when a certain name pops up, and why she needs to remain impenetrable to everyone else. But it's hard to trust that she can be that little girl who wanted to be accepted, the woman she shielded away behind an ambitious designer who gets what she wants when she wants it. That little girl's been disappointed too many damn times for that.

ImageBiography
The best description for Katiana's family is that they're of the working class. With both her mother's income and her grandparents', there had never been a fear of not having a roof over their heads nor not having food in their mouths. Of course, her mom had always envisioned her life going much differently, what with the idea that the man who would one day become the father of her child also being her husband. However, that was not to be. Katiana is the result of a one-night-stand that should have never happened because the two people involved could never stand one another. Sober, that is, because there was definitely a lot of alcohol involved in getting Kat's mother and father in the same room, let alone in a bed. Needless to say, she was conceived and the truth of the matter is that if Kat's mom could have paraded Kat in his face - hung the child over his head for the remainder of all of their lives - she would have done it. But there's only so much you can do when the father of your child goes across seas and wants nothing to do with you, or the mistake you both made. And so, instead of the two plus kids and a house she had wanted for herself, Kat's mom realized that she was too far along in her pregnancy to abort and had to welcome her bundle of unwanted joy.

Which was fine with her parents because Kat was definitely wanted in their home and lives. And if you asked her, and she actually cared enough to answer in more than monosyllabic retorts, that had been enough. Even though her grandfather would die when she turned seven, and her grandmother had a stint with breast cancer around the same time, she didn't have a bad childhood nor one marked by too much struggle. She might have been disappointed every now and then because she couldn't get a particular item for Christmas or her birthday, but the one thing most can say is that she's never been an overly demanding person who needed every material thing in the world to keep her going. With that being said, it wasn't all perfect. Having the unconditional love of her grandmother has always been sustaining for Katiana, but there's still something about having your mother's that makes all of the difference. The first time her mother had hit her had been harder than Katiana's tantrum had deserved, but it had been a brutal reminder - the fact that she was hit and the bruise that lasted for days, though the ringing in her ears from her grandmother cussing the woman out faded just a slow - that she was disliked immensely. The second time she was hit, years later, and Katiana fought back. She wasn't about to be attacked for things she couldn't change.

If it wasn't the fact that Kat was too close with her mother's mother, a feat not difficult when you don't question every little thing the elderly woman says and respectfully articulate your point in an argument, when her mother could not share in that same relationship, it was the fact that Kat had a definite skill that landed her in Laurel when her mother could not get in. If it wasn't because Kat happened to have plump lips like her maternal grandfather when her mom had smaller ones, it was because Kat's skin was like the richest chocolate while her mother's a smooth caramel. It was always something and nothing, and the worst outbursts were when she was drunk and the two of them were alone, Grams on a church trip for the weekend or at Thursday bingo nights. It had gotten so bad that her grandmother was the one who proposed that Kat become a yearly when she was in the seventh grade, not bothering to deny that she did need her daughter's help around the house and with driving now that she was getting older, not wanting to ever disrupt Kat's growth as a designer. Which she threw herself into wholeheartedly.

It had begun with simple grandma-watching, quietly eyeing the ease with which the older woman created blankets and throws for the women at church who were having babies or knew someone who was. Going to the store and testing out fabrics, and gazing at different threads. Before long, it became second-nature to do the very thing Kat had been observing and once she made her very first outfit, the rest became history. But Kat had also learned that she could never let her guard down; she had to be cold to meet the cold, regardless of how anyone else felt about it. She's made friends before, even got into a relationship or two. But she had to look out for own well-being and if that meant putting up such a convincing front of nothing-can-scare-me-ever that it too has become second nature, then so be it. The friends she's made at Laurel know that she's not just a robot. At least, she hopes they do.

Every year on the day before Summer classes begin, a bonfire is held. Now, thanks to a pyrokinetic staff member the bonfire is able to be massive, without much risk of it toppling over and harming students (usually). It is held a little ways off from the dorms on the beach by the lake, and the main bonfire is often surrounded by smaller firepits with different food options at each one. There is always, without exception, some form of alcohol and some form of drugs available, and the teachers tend to turn a blind eye to it, leaving not five minutes after students arrive. After all, many of the students have families too powerful to persecute them, and the school grants a good amount of freedom besides.

Music is played throughout the night, sometime alternating between speakers and student run bands if they request to perform. Dancing around the bonfire is common, and usually the bonfire is kicked off by a partner dance that by now all of the Yearlies have learned, even if they don't ask or get asked to dance. There has been drama started over the dance before, but it really just depends on how seriously one takes it- often times friends will dance together, after all. But everyone looks forward to Breadbowl posts afterwards about which dances meant something, who made what mistake, who snuck away with whom, etc. Nothing is kept secret for long at Laurel.

It is already dark out, with a full moon above and bright stars, the nearest city being too far away to outshine the night sky. Later on fireworks will be set off, and sparklers are resting all over the place for the amusement of students.

It is now about ten or so minutes before the bonfire "officially" kicks off with the first dance, but most students have already arrived and are sitting about the fires. Predictably, some are already stumbling over their own tongues thanks to the weight alcohol puts on them. Thus, the best and brightest of their age group prove themselves to still be young after all.

"Let's set the tone to a dramatic summer, shall we?"

The fact that Soledad found herself even going to the bonfire was a feat for the young girl. She just didn't get the appeal of it perhaps it was because this was her first year attending, or the idea of being surrounded by those she couldn't wait to leave behind for the summer, or the fact that she was just made aware by Kat about the part of the bonfire where there was partner dance sometime during the party. Which was the part she wasn't looking forward to either way; either she was asked to dance probably by Mason or one of her other guy friends out of pity or she would have to sit it out. Either scenario wasn't ideal. But, even after her protesting and constant resisting for the past week. Mason and Kat pulled out their puppy dog eyes and knew exactly how to sway their friend into actually going out and on top of that, Soledad got suckered into letting her best friend and roommate chose her outfit for the night since apparently her basic jeans, sneakers, and denim jackets didn't cut it. She looked at herself once more in a mirror situated in the hallway of Mason's building. She fixed her lip gloss one last time before walking in the direction of her guy friend's room, where the trio planned on meeting before heading over to the bonfire. With her short black booties clacking against the wooden floors, she only stopped walked when a passerby with powers of her own who asked in excitement if Soledad was actually going. To which, Soledad took out one of her headphones and sighed deeply before nodding. The girl, one half of a pair of clairvoyant twins, Madilyn squealed a bit as she bounced up and down.

Maddy spoke first. "Finally! Well, we all know someone's getting asked to dance tonight." Sol rolled her eyes as the short blonde winked and softly nudged at the girl who towered over her. "Yea, okay. That your powers talkin' or you assumin'?" Maddy shrugged. "I don't know, just a guess." Sol scoffed as she started to pick up her feet once more. "Yea okay, because I just have so many male suitors, amirite Maddy?" The young Latina laughed as she turned back toward Maddy speaking together as she walked away. "Maybe. See you there, sexy." Sol made a 'tsk' sound. Soledad groaned as she pulled on her high waisted mom jeans to pull them from going any higher on her mile-long legs as she finally found herself at Mason's door. She fixed her already secured sleeveless black top once more underneath her camouflage jacket before knocking. With her eyes returning back to her phone to change the song while the door opened."Kat, could ya have givin' me a skimpier outfit, Christ. I feel stupid." She didn't even look up from her phone at first as the door opened in front of her. And she definitely didn't notice a shirtless and towel-clad Mason Hart in front of her for a brief moment but, when she did.

She could feel herself, on the inside, begin to get flustered. She pursed her lips before letting out a small chuckle and turning her lips into an awkward smile as her eyes began to look up towards Mason's. She turned the awkward smile into a smirk quickly in order to hide just how flustered and caught off guard she truly was before giving him a snippy comment, per the usual. "You just answer the door naked now, Mace. That it?" With her hands making circles around his body to make her point even more while her eyes were more or less looking at Mason's forehead as opposed to his eyes. It wasn't that she hasn't seen him shirtless before, they were workout partners when it came to their powers, they ran together, and in the past almost four years of knowing him she has learned that he does like to be unnecessarily shirtless whenever possible. However, shockingly enough she had never seen him shirtless with only a towel as his only form of clothing. When she looked past him to see her best friend sitting down behind him, Sol couldn't help but chuckle. "If I was interrupting somethin', all ya'll had to do was say so, damn." She was kidding. Mostly. She knew for a fact that if there was anything going on between the two of them, they would have told her or she would have found out but, either way, it didn't stop a little bit of jealousy from unraveling inside of her. In the way where she felt like she could have punched a wall but, she held it in and just turned her bright eyes back to Mason with a smirk. "I'll wait out here while you get decent." She turned herself away from leaning on the doorframe to a few feet away from the door as she leaned against a wall as went to her messages to text her pain in the ass, younger 'sister from another mister'.

Sis (Kat)

you are petty af. lmk when yall are done

She wasn't angry at the fact that Kat was in there with Mason seeing that, she knew how close they were and the fact that she had no right to be jealous seeing that they were just friends. But, every once and a while something just got to her when it came to Mason. But, she wasn't going to think about that or let those stupid thoughts ruin her night. It was the first time she was all dressed up to go out and have fun and that's where her mind was at the moment.

In another life, Mason might have been allowed to appreciate Soledad coming to his bedroom just as he had gotten out of the shower, appreciated the way her eyes glazed over just before she hid it with a chuckle and her signature smirk that reminded him of Katiana. However, this wasn't another life and the fact remained that the situation occured with Katiana seated on his bed with the most deceptively innocent expression on her face and it was definitely not as sexy as his imagination could have made it. In fact, if it hadn't been for the way Sol's eyes had raked over his form - and it meant something when, for a guy who had no shame in walking around shirtless, he actually blushed at seeing her - it probably would have been just as embarrassing to him as it did her. Yet and still, though, it was embarrassing enough, even without Kat's long-suffering stare that he could just feel on his back. "I-I was just...we were just..." Even without words, Mason could feel - no, smell - Kat's unimpressed annoyance with him and he glared back at her just as Sol left. Turning back to the other girl, Mason opened his mouth to say something, anything really, but thought better of it and closed his bedroom door, wincing at his lack of intelligence in a situation like this. Kat sat, unrepentant, on his bed with her phone in hand, one milk-chocolate leg crossed over another.

"You said she was still on her way," he stated.

"She was," was the very monotonous response as Kat raked a hand through her curls, having done her best to keep her hair intact for the evening. Not oblivious to the look her friend was giving her, Kat text out a quick response to Sol and a message to Emerson before fixing her current company with a raised eyebrow. "Don't give me that look. I was helping you out. You and I both know that there was more than just shock in baby girl's eyes, and don't even act like that ain't make you happy 'cause you know it did."

To: Em
Ur friends stress me out :/ tell me ur not still in ur room cuz i'll drag u out

To: Tiny (Sol)

"Kat..."

"Listen, what kind of future godmother would I be if I didn't aid in securing the existence of my future godchildren?" Even if Mason wanted to be upset or at least chastise the meddling junior, it was hard to look serious when he snorted at her non-rhetorical question. Attempting to straighten his face into something more chagrined, Mason watched the dark-skinned designer roll her eyes before sliding off the bed and back into her sandals as she stood. "You're a mess," he told her, trying not to grin, "and I can't believe that everyone else doesn't see how much of a messy ass troll you actually are." He really couldn't. Mason understood that Kat was a bit different in the privacy that came with being close friends, and how she was when outside people came into the picture. He knew that she scared people, sometimes even more than he did with everyone knowing what his abilities really hid. However, it was hard to reconcile the actual fear and intimidation so many of their peers felt when there her dark eyes were alight with glee and mischief, when Kat smiled easier and her scent was as warm and as sweet as summer felt to him.

With a wry grin of her own, Kat replied, teasing, "And out of all of that, nothing you said sounded like you're against making my future god-babies with Sol, so..." Mason practically watched the girl skip past him to his bedroom door. She barely even opened the door before he, not trying to let her leave without having the last word, called out, "You know I can't stand you right?" Cheekily, Kat only answered with, "Baby boy, you adore me," and closed the door behind her to let Mason get ready with the outfit she had provided.

Once in the hallway, Katiana gave herself a moment to take in the ensemble she had left for Sol in their room and the way it accentuated the other girl's long, sleek legs. Which was the main point. She had to give herself a pat on the back for that. But before long, her gaze went back upwards to note the frown that Sol was good at hiding. "Sweetie, really? The only thing you interrupted was the mutually beneficial snacking I provided the both of y'all lookin' like y'all do. Y'all coulda been working on my future nieces that you're naming after me, but naaaaaaaaahhhhh," she said, a subtle sway in her hips that Kat couldn't hide even as she tried as she traipsed over to her taller friend's side.

Sean was silently simmering about exactly how much time he’d have to spend in front of this fire to officially say he’d shown β€˜school spirit’ when a little voice cut through his impatient thoughts. "Hi Sean.”

Sean was a little shocked that anyone here really wanted to approach him, but he leaned back and looked up into the face of Pepper. He nodded slightly in understanding, they were new-ish friends. He was still warming up he supposed, trying to decide if she was a good friend to have or something. She seemed a genuinely caring and supportive person, even if she did associate with the walking trouble that was their self-appointed Queen, Brooklyn.

β€œOh, Salt and Pepper.” He nodded to acknowledge her presence.

β€œDo you mind if I sit next to you?” She asked. β€œI'm a bit lonely here..."

Sean sniffed and rubbed at his nose as he looked around at the empty logs surrounding him. He had kind of liked lonely, but he wasn’t the type of bastard to leave a sweet girl like Pepper hanging. Despite what you might have heard about him. β€œWell, I mean, I do have a lot of friends due to turn up any moment, but I suppose there’s room for you.”
He smirked to himself and looked back out towards the throng of people, although it hardly seemed possible it looked as if the crowd had tripled in volume.

The time seemed to stretch out endlessly between Sean and his new log-mate. So he turned to Pepper and said the first thing that came to his mind, β€œI, uh, like your top thing.” He gestured vaguely to the white top she was wearing before he turned away and took a long, slow drink from his cup. Small talk wasn’t exactly his forte.

There was a group of boys all wearing caps not to far from him, and through the gaps of their bodies, Sean managed to spot Cayden. He had his hand half raised to wave over Cayden before he caught himself. It was hard not knowing what was up with the guy these days but it would be far worse if Sean had stuck around and hurt him. In fact just thinking about his old friend had the air around Sean raising by several degrees and he hoped Pepper accounted the heat to the fire in front of them.

He took a deep breath, and a long sip of his drink, forcing his body to uncoil and relax. β€œWho knew the academy even had this many students, huh?” He said in a much easier tone of voice, and leaned back on the log. β€œI reckon I’d be lucky to know a total of ten people in this entire place.”

AIR HIROTA
#66b3ff
Image
Air was running late. Well running late was probably the wrong expression for it. Air had been late, but she had also been blissfully unaware and uncaring. In fact, she’d been enjoying the empty courtyards and hallways, and had used them to practice her skate boarding. It was only when she skated round one of the dorms and saw the flames reaching upwards that she even remembered the bonfire. And so with a grin and wind swept hair she hurried towards the celebrations, completely under-dressed by any fashionable standards.

She tucked her skateboard up by a tree and ducked into the crowd letting the movement of it sweep her up. She didn’t see Kat anywhere and like usual, without the older, smarter, more mature girl to toddle along behind, Air was a little lost and very spacey.
She spotted Brooklyn, Daniel and Petra who had always been nice to her, but they were around Lucy, and honestly, Air didn’t have the mood or energy to be around Lucy. The two of them would never get along.

Eventually the crowd spat Air out in front of a drinks table, and with a shrug of serendipity Air poured herself up an alcoholic drink. Though when she heard Drake’s voice carry through the crowd, Air spun around. Of course, she’d failed to notice Cayden next to her, and as she moved off to find Drake, she also failed to notice that she’d knocked the drink in his hand.

It only took the girl a few bounds to find the dorky boy and with a grin she threw her arms around his neck. β€œHeya!”
She said as she released the poor boy, completely ignoring Thayer and Keevan, who he was with, after all she didn’t really know either of the two boys. β€œHow huge is that fire?” Air laughed a little and stared up at the huge bonfire roaring away.

While people begin to settle more into the cheery atmosphere of the bonfire, and become steadily more buzzed, different collections of people clearly are forming. The most notable of them are the drinking games, as they tend to let out a roar of noise every few minutes as someone lands a good toss, a team wins a game, etc. Amid one such group is Emerson Hill, engaged in a game of drunk jenga that is becoming steadily more perilous with every block drawn. The fact that most of the blocks require someone to take a shot, finish their drink, or do something stupid that they may want to take a drink to brace themselves for, has hardly improved people's mastery at removing pieces. Tipsy as she is, Emerson is still the clear winner among the group in terms of ability to take pieces out of shaky locations with ease. Right now, her hand is on a single piece supporting the entire tower. She looks around at the crowd with a cheeky grin, raising her eyebrows as everyone leans in with suspense. With one smooth motion, she pulls it out, and the entire tower moves down an inch without shaking. She leans back looking like the victor of an olympic medal, to the cheers of the people around her. Reading the dare, Emerson takes another drink.

Her phone buzzes in the pocket of her short denim overalls, and Emerson makes a critical mistake: she pulls it out with a flourish. In this action, her elbow hits the jenga tower and sends it tumbling to the ground. Her face falls with disappointment, though mostly in jest. Someone hands her a can, "Rules are rules."

Erin wrinkles her nose at this. She had been enjoying the game, but the loser has to shotgun beer and she really doesn't want to feel like a frat star at the moment. She sends a quick response to Kat first, and then accepts her fate.

To: Kat
Get ready to be both proud and disappointed in me. Good news: I left my room and also had a poptart so I'm not drinking on an empty stomach. Bad news: I'm about to dishonor what little family I have left.

With that incredibly cryptic message, she puts her phone to the side and makes a valiant effort with the can. She's only done this maybe twice before, always at the bonfire, and it is a sorry sight indeed. If nothing else, she manages to keep it from getting on her clothes. Upon finishing, she feels like an absolute mess and a half. And then she catches sight of Sean and then Petra, one after the other, and immediately wants another drink.

As soon as Keevan catches sight of Drake approaching, he closes his mouth. He'll tease Thayer about his crush (which is most certainly requited but both members of it are way too deep in it to apparently notice) to the end of the earths in private, but when someone else is near Keevan does something he very rarely does: shuts up about it. This is a true testament to his respect and friendship for Thayer, given what a gossip and chatterbox Keevan otherwise tends to be. "Of course dude, the more the merrier!"

Keevan only really hangs out with Drake when Thayer is also around, but he enjoys the guys company. After all, they're actually in the same year- if anything, it's kind of funny how Drake is sort of Thayer's mentee, while Keevan is his best friend. Perhaps it helps that Keevan and Thayer's talents and interests are sort of on opposite ends whereas Drake has a lot that he and Thayer can work on together. Maybe if Drake were the writer and Keevan into photography, their positions would be flipped.

Likely called over by a text from Thayer, Jenny is the next one to join the group. Keevan tries to suppress a grin, but makes less of an effort to look over at Thayer for the guy's reaction to Jenny being so close behind him. He wonders, in hindsight, if Thayer had secretly hoped the clearly fake falsetto earlier had been coming from the tiny brunette girl standing behind him now.

Before Thayer could even really have a chance to respond, although Keevan suspects it will be with a scarlet blush, a stammer, and then a desperate attempt to seem completely cool and definitely not secretly in love with the girl, another girl bursts into the group. This time, it's Air- the peppy, if slightly ditzy, Influential. Keevan doesn't really know her that well, but she seems nice enough, same as Drake. And that's who she makes a beeline to in the group, completely ignoring the rest of them. Keevan has to scoot a bit out of the way to avoid being knocked over by her in all of her energy. Keevan glances over at the giant fire and grins, he can't help but agree that it is a pretty wicked sights. Perks of having students who can control fire at this school include wicked bonfires and firework displays. Meanwhile all he contributes is a gossip rag.

It's a pretty fun gossip rag, though.

For the first time that night, something resembling a smile lights itself across Daniel's face when Brooklyn slips herself underneath his arm, something that doesn't require much effort considering the height difference between the two. He has to admit, as she's the first person he genuinely likes to show themselves at the fire Brooklyn did genuinely make his life better by showing up. He hears someone whisper behind him, "I bet Brooklyn likes to party so much because otherwise Daniel's too much of a robot to be decent in bed." With that, the smile immediately vanishes back to his typical blank expression. It's not the comment of him being a robot that bothers him, because in many ways he tends to encourage the rumors that he's an emotionless asshole. Instead, the constant insinuations that he and Brooklyn are dating tend to get under his skin.

It's not even that he has a problem with people thinking that they are together, really. They are typically found side by side at all times anyway. It just irritates him a bit that people feel like they can whisper behind his back without him finding out about it, without consequences. Lions may not need to worry about the opinions of sheep, but that doesn't mean the baaing doesn't get annoying from time to time. He turns a bit, as though cracking his back, and makes direct eye contact with the two who were smiling and chatting behind them. They immediately look away, and he flashes a smile that is more teeth than friendly intentions. Without another word, they push through the crowd to distance themselves, and Daniel's menacing smile fades to a smug expression before turning back towards the rest of the group.

Petra is the next to approach the group, and her immediate comment is on the sobriety of the group. Daniel glances down at the cup in his own hand, still untouched as it will likely remain for the rest of the night. He looks back up at Petra and shrugs, "You all are free to drink- I'll play chaperone."

Every one of them knows that the young man doesn't touch alcohol so long as it can be avoided, and he tends to end up taking care of everyone else when they get a little too messy. And if something is to happen, if someone sees something they shouldn't or makes an untoward comment about one of the group, even if it's about Lance or Lucy, he tends to be the first one to take care of it. His friends are ruthless, certainly, and able to fend for themselves, but he likes to help keep their hands clean where he can. A little bit of sentimentality, perhaps.

In the distance, the student class president for the seniors stands up on a picnic table and calls out for everyone's attention. "Welcome to the summer semester, everyone! We're gonna be starting the first song in a minute, so find your partners, or a comfy sit to watch everyone else have fun fro-" a student at the base of the picnic table shoves at the young man's legs, causing him to stumble, "Okay, okay, don't worry about the fun then. But if anyone is looking for a partner, you know where to find me." The guy winks, and then jumps off the picnic table as the groups of students return to chatter in a dull roar that fills the area.

Daniel turns from watching the speaker back to the group, "Well, if either of you need a dancing partner let me know, but otherwise I'll hang back."

Before the girls could truly get into a conversation about Kat's machinations, and Sol and Mason's potential whatever-they-could-possibly-be-if-certain-friends-minded-her-business, Mason emerged from his bedroom, fully dressed and situating his hat atop his head. It wasn't his idea, obviously. But he figured that Kat hadn't steered him wrong when it came to fashion and getting dressed by her was a lot better than being silently judged by her. One didn't make his skin prickle with the wrongness of it.

"We should probably get going," he remarked, taking three short strides to the girls. "Pretty sure the dancing should be starting right about now and someone," he cast a pointed look Katiana's way, "just hates missing out on her favorite tradition." Kat stared at him for a long time, silently, rolled her eyes, and only shortly said, "Ew." Not looking back because she knew the other two would follow, Katiana began the trek from the dorms to the beach of the lake, occasionally glancing down at her phone when she received Facebook notifications about the bonfire. Because the entire world wasn't yet aware of the powered students of Laurel, they could post things to a private Facebook for events like the bonfire where the occasional student or two might accidentally forget to not always show off their gifts. Kat liked them, loved watching and seeing who could do what, but she understood what would happen if too many people found out that there was a genetic abnormality that gave certain individuals fantastic abilities. Either way, from what she saw, nothing big had happened just yet, but it was close to that time. She did manage to send a text to Emerson.

To: Em
ur a mess. i'll find u

"Hey, Sol," Mason began, purposefully staying a little behind Katiana to confront his friend. He didn't need the other girl thinking anything was going on between himself and Kat, not because there was an issue with Kat.

They'd had a conversation twice about their relationship and both times ended in them admitting that at some point, it wouldn't work. Her walls were high already and he was sure they'd ruin their friendship trying to get her to lower it any more than she already had for him. And while she was a comfort and one of the greatest that he'd found in his nineteen years of living, it just wouldn't work for them. But with Sol...Soledad was...special, as lame as it sounded. He didn't know why but Mason had already been rather fascinated with her when he found out what her powers were initially, mostly because the dork in him couldn't help but liken her to a cooler superhero who didn't get their strength (like him) from being super angry and animalistic. And she had far more control over it than he did, at least, from what he had seen. Then, actually interacting with her after the incident that he never wants to mention because it never happened even though it clearly did, Mason could honestly say that he was sprung. On curiosity, on friendship, on more...on just everything, and he didn't know if he had a chance with her. Not really, not when it could potentially mess up their friendship. But it didn't stop him from wanting it and it definitely didn't stop him from wanting to clear up any misunderstandings because certain people decided to meddle for the day.

"I just wanted to say if - if we made you uncomfortable at all, that wasn't...Kat was just getting my clothes together 'cause I took longer in the gym than I thought I would," he managed out, not exactly sure why he felt nerves weighing on his tongue when he could flirt as easily as he breathes with Sol any other day. He probably didn't even need to apologize for anything other than being mostly naked in front of the girl, but the words came out and he couldn't control them. "And about the towel thing - that was...that was not on me. I thought I had more time and then she was gonna leave to actually let me - "

"I thought you wanted to get going," Kat called from ahead, which was surprisingly farther away from them than Mason had realized. For her to have the shorter legs, her agility was befuddling at times. But Mason couldn't focus on anything other than glowering at her timing and raised eyebrow. "You were so worried about traditions and all that." She whirled around and continued walking, and shaking his head, Mason followed with Sol, taking those few longer strides to reach their friend just as they arrived at the beach. Their welcome was the cacophony of mixed sounds; there was a song much louder than another in the background, the perfect indie record to start the first summer dance off along with somebody else's radio followed by chattering, laughing, and goading for those still immersed in their drinking games. "And so it begins..."

"Pessimist." Mason accused and Kat smirked at him from the corner of his eyes. The announcement for people to grab their partners had Katiana eyeing the crowd for a moment, taking in who was choosing whom, before she glanced back at her friends. Mason tried not to, at first, but then he was glancing at Sol and Kat damn near snorted in amusement. "Yeah, no. I don't dance. I'm getting a drink. Y'all...y'all have fun," she told them and walked away without a chance of a rebuttal in her search for Emerson, leaving Mason to shake his head. After a beat, he turned to fully to Sol, hands shoved deep into his pockets. "So, how about that first dance since this is technically your first one here? I figured I might as well offer since...you know...earlier. My...er, better apology."

Away from the duo, Kat wandered a little before her eyes settled on too very familiar forms and a bunch of cups with guys. Shaking her head silently, Katiana waltzed up to the girls, peering over Mina's shoulder. "This looks like a fun game that you're gonna get food after, Em," she informed the blonde with a pointed stare before gracing Mina with the softening of her eyes and, "Hey, love. Don't tell me you've been seduced by drunken tomfoolery too."

Sol was looking down at her phone as she saw the message from Kat and she couldn't help but scoff. Thirsty. Soledad was not thirsty for anyone especially over one of her closest friends. Please. However, there was still this feeling inside of her, Jesus, she still felt like she wanted to punch through a wall. She didn't even know why. She had no right to be mad, jealous, or thirsty, for that matter, over what her friends were or weren't doing with each other or with other people. When she heard Kat's voice heading towards her and just sighed as she rolled her eyes. She knew exactly what her sister was going to say to her. She chuckled before turning her head from looking up at the ceiling to looking at Kat as she walked towards the taller girl. As much as Soledad wanted to be annoyed, she couldn't help but laugh at Kat as she spoke. "Whoa, hold up. Pump them brakes. Okay? I enjoyed the view no matter how unexpected," She looked Kat up and down with her eyebrow raised. "But, you need to stop with these nieces. Seein that in order to, y'know have nieces there needs to be a relationship, a connection, or shit I don't know, a basic sexual attraction between two people." She proclaimed while getting up from her leaning position on the wall."Either way, ya'll don't owe me anything." She just shrugged.

Before they could get any deeper into their conversation, that, let's face it. Would just keep going around in circles with Kat talking about this relationship between her two best friends and these imaginary nieces with Sol rebutting it at every chance she got. Mason joined the two of them declaring how the dancing was getting started and how they would miss Kat's favorite tradition. With a snort, Soledad turned her eyes towards the taller male with a smile. "Yea, that'd be a tragedy to miss." She was being sarcastic. Clearly. Part of Sol actually wanted to miss the first dance. She knew Kat would find someone to dance with, Mason'd have his pick of the litter too, all while Sol had a drink in her hand. Just waiting for the actual dance music to start playing.

By the point where they started getting closer to the beach, Sol had put her headphones and phone away in her pocket for the first time since leaving her and Kat's room. Only to hear Mason say her name as they walked, not even noticing Kat getting further and further away from the pair. "What's up?" She asked as she quickly took a look at him. Even though she said nothing was going on between the two of them, she had to admit. He looked good. Really good. It actually took her a minute to snap back to reality when he started to talk. She looked him in the eyes as they slowed down their pace even more. She found herself taking a deep breath as he started to explain himself as if he had. She wanted to interject but she decided against it instead, she chose to wait for him to finish. However, before he could finish his sentence Kat hurried them along. Soledad laughed before picking up the pace with Mason not far in front of her. "Mm, damn." She finally took her eyes off of him and back to looking in front of her where she finally saw them reach the beach with a mixture of music, socializing, and the President of their class announcing how it was time for the partner dance. Sol looked around her to see friends grabbing other friends or couples grabbing one another but, because of how occupied she was looking around. She didn't seem to notice Mason looking at her. Until it was too late and Kat declared how she didn't dance and was going to get a drink.

"Wait, what about the dan--... Before she could finish her thought or even start to rebuff Kat's 'have fun' comment, which obviously towards Mason and Sol, all taller girl could do was softly groan as she watched her best friend bounce off. "Okay, bye." She shook her head as Mason turned towards him with his hands in his pocket. Sol raised an eyebrow with a smirk still on her face as she looked up at the guy who towered over her. As he asked her to dance, Soledad couldn't help but think. "What the hell is his problem today?" It wasn't like Mason to act so... sheepish and nervous. Ever. Especially around her and Kat and that was the Mason she needed right now in order to help make this dance any less awkward. She was already iffy on dancing with someone else in front of her peers and it didn't help that it was Mason, someone she knew she'd get teased for dancing with by a certain "Queen Bee" who wouldn't be named and her little gaggle of friends. So, in order to get him back to normal. She did what she did best, teasing. She took a step towards him with an awkward smile and a shake of her head.

"I don't know, Hart. I kind of have a waiting list of guys wanting to dance with me just sayin 'Soledad, te necesito. Soledad, te quiero a ti." (Soledad, I need you. Soledad, I want you.) She was smirking the entire time she spoke, moving closer when she started speaking Spanish. She, however, soon broke her sarcastic smirk to find herself actually smiling with a genuine laugh that followed for the first time all day. She held up one finger before continuing. "But, I guess since you gave me that unexpected but, somewhat pleasant little peep show. I think I can bump you up to the top of that list. Besides, I feel like pissing off your little admirers tonight." She winked before looking towards where she found Brooklyn, Petra, and rest of their little group hanging out. By the last sentence, the sarcasm was back but, she softly took his arm and made their way to where most of the couples gathered.

But, she did find herself pause for a minute, looking back in the direction Kat went in before finding her eyes back at Mason as she loosened her grip on his arm. "And for what it's worth I know the towel thing wasn't on you. That has Kat written all over but... you don't owe me shit, y'know that, right? And if you feel like you have to dance with me as an apology for it... You don't--.. you don't have to. You can dance with someone you actually want to, it won't hurt my feelings." She shrugged. "Ego maybe, but not my feelings."

Thayer's impromptu photo shoot of Jenny is perhaps the most blatant show of his affection yet, although the two of them are perhaps so blinded by their own crush that they can't see the feelings in the flash of the camera and Thayer's affectionate attention to detail. Behind them, the announcement that the dance is soon beginning is made. Keevan scans the crowd to try and pick out every new match that is dancing together tonight. Some of them are just friends joking around, some have simply grabbed the person nearest to them because they desperately want to feel truly included in the basically meaningless tradition.

Keevan is more interested in those who are nervously asking a crush to dance, or who are pointedly dancing with someone other than their significant other. The making and breaking of a couple is the most interesting part, to the young writer, with the rest of it often just feeling like fluff and filler. Of course, having never succeeded in a relationship for more than a few weeks, he hardly has an experienced approach to relationships. Keevan tends, instead, to fall for people he can't have, pine for three months or so, and then move on to another person just out of reach. He's too much of a romantic to take part in real romance. And yet, not so much of a romantic that he isn't interested in bringing the private out to the public. A celebration of human interaction, he would call his love for gossip. As a writer, he's always been good at sugarcoating.

"Why don't you two break tradition for once and go dance as a duo?" Keevan smiles at his own suggestion, giving Thayer a meaningful look that he believes to be subtle but is in fact quite transparent.

"After all, this may very well be Thayer's last summer here, right? Oh, lord, I think I may make myself cry thinking of that," Keevan mocks wiping a tear from his eye, but the thought of Thayer's graduation does bring him genuine pain. What would he do without his roommate and best friend? What if he gets bunked up with some obnoxious busybody his senior year? Certainly two of those in one room would become incredibly grating.

Jenny has a similar thought, challenging them all to a race to the dance floor. Keevan laughs as she darts off, and as soon as she's out of earshot looks over at Thayer and gives him an encouraging nudge. "No dancing as a group for this song, big guy. I want to see hands around waist, with at least two feet of space in between you. Wouldn't want to feel too intimate, would you?" He gently pushes Thayer forward so that the ginger will be the closest behind Jenny. Keevan, for his part, hangs back a few seconds and winks at Drake who is just as aware of the situation as he is.

Emerson, thankfully, is pulled out of her little moment of melancholy by a friendly figure appearing and giving her a much needed hug. She looks over and immediately the wistful expression melts away to one of happiness at the sight of Mina, one of her absolute favorite people at this school. "Want to show those guys how it's really played?" Em follows the line of Mina's gesture to see a table at which a group of people are playing or spectating flip cup. Fond of any sort of competition, and at this moment very in favor of anything that leads to her having a few more drinks to chase away the sad nostalgia that is caught in her throat at the moment, Emerson gives Mina a tight squeeze back.

"That is exactly what I want to do right now- are you sure you weren't admitted to this school as a telepath? Have you been poking around my brain by any chance?" Em jokes. Of course, anyone who has seen any of Mina's art will know without hesitation why the talented artist was admitted to Laurel. As far as Em is concerned, Mina's art puts her inventions to shame. She could sit in a room and watch Mina work for hours without getting bored, which is saying quite a lot considering how Em tends to be quite antsy when not working on her own tinkering projects.

Em grabs Mina's hand and drags her over to the flip cup table, where they are met with more drinks and a cocky group certain of their victory. What they have not counted on are Em and Mina's fine motor skills, both quite adept for separate reasons.

The text from Kat buzzes in Em's pocket, but she is too caught up in the game to check the phone, quickly draining the drink in her cup and going into deep focus mode as she flips it over after three tries. She can normally do it in one, but Em would be lying if she said the alcohol was not affecting her in any way. Already her normally quick hands are starting to slow a little bit. In her attempt to cheer up, she had certainly had a few too many drinks. To be fair, most of the damage had come from that game of drunk Jenga earlier.

Kat arrives as Mina is taking her turn, giving Em the freedom to glance over at her friend and give her a large, almost sheepish smile. She already knows that Kat will be coming with a good-hearted scolding. "I'm not hungry! The poptarts were brown sugar, too, which makes them the least junk-foody of the poptarts. And I had two of them. Where's your drink? Oh, Kat, I'm going to feel silly if everyone else is more put together than me."

This, of course, is inevitable. Even when she is completely sober, most people seem to be better put together than Em.

Daniel raises an eyebrow at Petra's challenge, but it one that he feels completely comfortable rising to. As cold as he seems, Daniel is actually quite good at taking care of other people when they get a bit too sloppy. Perhaps it is from his efficient control that this skill comes from. There may not always be warmth in the way he takes care of people, but he will without fail have a drunk friend tucked into bed with a glass of water and two aspirins on their bedside table for them in the morning. He has had to do this for many friends in the past, especially since several in his clique have a penchant for partying.

Brooklyn demands a future dance out of Daniel, to which he responds with an indulgent smile and an expression that makes it clear he is quite confident he'll be able to get out of it later. For all of his skills and talents, Daniel has two left feet, and prefers to avoid showcasing the weakness to the entire school. The smile fades quickly as he catches sight of something.

Most people would not catch Brooklyn's sleight of hand, but Daniel has always been the one who sees through magicians' acts. Besides, he and Brooklyn have been friends for nearly as long as he has been at Laurel, and the young woman would have trouble slipping anything past someone who has paid such close attention to her for so long.

Of course, Daniel does not say anything, because he would never do such a thing in front of other people. Truth be told, he is unlikely to do it in front of even just Brooklyn. Daniel is less inclined towards a confrontational intervention and more someone who works through small, subtle acts. He makes a note to keep a close eye on Brooklyn and Petra alike tonight. As they both disappear into the crowd of dancers, he remains back, but still able to see them over the heads of others. He is a silent guard, a watchmen in the night. Perhaps the perceived positions of the group are inaccurate. It seems that Brooklyn and Petra are more like a pair of co-ruling queens, and Daniel the one who watches and protects them.

The thing was that Katiana could have a good time and probably would, eventually. Maybe. It depended - on what, she didn't know just yet. But the second Emerson turned to her with damn near glassy eyes and a a smile that was much larger than she normally would have amidst Katiana's light scolding, she already knew that she would be putting 'a good time' on hold for a little while, if only to assure Emerson a not-so-unpleasant hangover. She more than likely wouldn't be able to save the blonde from the hangover she subjected herself too because there was no denying that a hangover was coming, but she'd at least be able to stop an even worse one from forming. Hopefully.

"You do know that that's not how junk food works, right?" She inquired, impassive as she observed Mina and the game. "Junk food is junk food, and none of it is gonna soak up any of whatever you had to drink tonight." Sparing Emerson a calculative glance, Katiana smirked at the other girl, speculating in her head on what could have caused her friend to go crazy with the alcohol already. It wasn't surprising that Emerson had given into the allure of alcohol at an event where everyone was doing it; she was impulsive like that. It was one of the reasons why Katiana loved her, in the first place. However, indulging this quickly into the night and having the alcohol effect her this quickly only meant that something had triggered her, and Katiana didn't need anything making it worse. Sighing, her smirk turned into a more placating smile as she said, "How 'bout this? I'll get a drink if you come get real food with me after this game. I'll even let you pick what I drink."

When Sol brought up her imaginary line of guys, the laugh felt like it was punched out of Mason and he found his shoulders growing more and more lax, once more back to a state that felt less like nervousness and more like normal. Which was a lot better - no, scratch that, it was much better than feeling as if he would be saying the wrong thing. The situation Kat had put him in wasn't one he was familiar with and it was weird to navigate out of the discomfort and awkwardness left in the other girl's wake. "Damn, NΓΊΓ±ez, a whole line? How the hell am I supposed to compete with that?" was his retort with a wry grin. And when she told him that she'd concede to his request for a dance, he feigned a damn near affronted look. "Somewhat pleasant? I'll have you know that that was only a tease. I do my best shows on Saturdays at eleven o'clock," he told her, shaking his head when he followed her line of vision to where Brooklyn and Petra were.

Ask Mason on any given day, and he would tell you that it wasn't that Brooklyn wasn't pretty or that he actually had an altercation with Petra that resulted in his dislike of either. Because Brooklyn was pretty - really pretty - and he and Petra didn't interact enough for there to be any personal discord. However, that didn't stop him from disliking them and wanting nothing to do with either of them. It didn't help that it didn't take a genius to know that neither girl particularly liked Soledad much to begin with. When Sol moved to pull away from him, Mason reached over to grasp the hand that had been gripping his arm, an earnest glint in his eyes as he gazed down at her and said, "You and I both know I don't need to owe you shit to wanna dance with you." He shrugged. "I just do." Mason found himself staring a few seconds longer than necessary, but not exactly wanting to look away. Whether it was to convey the sheer honesty of his words or simply because of the way the still setting sun made the brown of her skin look even more golden than it already was, he wouldn't be able to say. But, after a moment too long, he licked his lower lip and smirked again, voice teasing as he added, "'Sides, gorgeous, who else am I gonna have fun and piss some people off with?" With her hand still in his, Mason - laughing - pulled Sol to spin her, hoping to start the having fun part (and putting aside the way his heart had damn near lurched at what felt like a confession a few seconds ago).

"That is exactly what I want to do right now- are you sure you weren't admitted to this school as a telepath? Have you been poking around my brain by any chance?"

Mina fake gasped, "I have been exposed." Mina let herself be dragged towards the table, the guys already looking towards them, probably expecting an easy victory. "My life is over!" Her flare for the dramatics a sure sign that the few shot she'd had earlier had already started to affect her, which was a surprise, Mina had a much higher alcohol tolerance than most of her friends. Did she only have a sandwich today, she tried to remember, but she came up blank. She will be sure to fix that as soon as they beat those guys. As Em was taking the the first drink, Mina was trying to asses the guys playing. Two of the four of them were already way too drunk, one was frequently checking his phone, probably waiting for a text from his girlfriend, and the last one was checking Mina out. This will be easy.

"Hey, love. Don't tell me you've been seduced by drunken tomfoolery too." Mina turned to Kat and sent her kiss, "Please, you know I'm the one does the seduction here." She turned and winked at her opponent before she downed her drink and flipped her cup. She took a quick glance to Emerson and Kat, before she drank and flipped the last few cups in rapid succession leaving the guys blinking at her, not yet sure how they should feel about losing.

"Did someone mention food?" Mina hugged Kat's waist, "I'm sure I should eat something, maybe even drink a bottle of water. As should you, Em. Otherwise I'm sure we would regret it tomorrow."

Emerson doesn't mean to be a temporary stopper on Kat's party. She never seems to mean any harm towards anyone- frankly, Emerson hardly even means any harm to flies that buzz rather annoyingly around her. She's more inclined towards softness, sad but not malicious bitterness, and other such things. And yet this path has already been stepped on with one strong, careless foot when she drank too much without thinking about the obligation that Kat might feel to take care of her later on. Sadly, bright as Emerson is she is also quite dense, and doesn't catch on to the hold she has put on Kat's night. All she hears is the girl (not incorrectly) criticizing her food choice with traces of maternal concern in her voice. Emerson is many positive things: she is cheerful, she is smart, she is driven. Responsible, however? It may make cameos in her life, but for the most part she leans more towards spontaneity and carelessness. This is perhaps why Kat is such a crucial presence in her life. It is certainly why she, only half focuses on Kat's concerns at first, instead cheering in celebration when Mina wins the game for their team.

Her full attention finally focuses on Kat, who very much deserves it. "Poptarts are carbs! And carbs soak it up. Or is that starches? You know, I never really enjoyed those health classes they made us take in middle school and freshman year," she admits that her knowledge is pretty shaky when it comes to dietary needs and requirements. In this category, Kat is certainly the more reliable source of information.

Mina jumps to Kat's side, and Em smiles and shrugs knowing she is half-heartedly fighting a losing battle. "Alright, alright. Victory snacks it is! And luckily for you, I am completely lacking in creativity when it comes to drinks, so I'll settle for a vodka cranberry juice. Or maybe we can do a round of shots together, to bring in the new summer? Our final summer?" The last tack-on is half meant to encourage leniency, but ultimately makes Em a little sad to think about. After spending all of her life at Laurel, the idea of leaving it within the next year is incredibly daunting. Especially as she hasn't started any college applications yet due to sheer nervousness that seems to overtake her anytime she starts them. It's as though beginning an application will push her closer to the future and further from Laurel, something that makes her incredibly antsy to think about.

Em links her arms with Mina and Kat, and then smiles with a renewed brightness that comes from a valiant effort at pushing down those thoughts. "Shall we?"

"Mmmhhmmmm, sure," Kat said in response to Emerson's defense of her earlier "food" choices. Katiana could indulge in as much junk food as the rest of them and be satiated for the a good portion of the day, but she at least remembered that she could only do that every few days. Then, she'd have to partake in a real meal. If it were any other friend who tipsily informed her of their caloric intake via poptarts, Katiana would have snorted gracelessly and tucked in to watch the fireworks. However, considering Emerson's already precarious management of her health and life - mostly when it concerned to losing herself so deeply in her work that meals were occasionally a last thought, if a thought at all - Emerson wasn't going to be one of those friends she casually watched fall flat on their faces, drunk off their asses and about to receive the worst hangovers their teenage bodies could handle.

Kat welcomed Mina's slender arms around her trim waist by placing a hand on them in greeting, giving one of the other girl's forearms a soft squeeze of acknowledgement. Being one of Katiana's oldest companions, ever, Kat was more than pleased to hear her Mina backing her up, minutely smirking at Emerson's eventual resignation. "Shots it is then," she announced, taking in the dark cloud that rose to cover Em's usually bright countenance at the mention of it being their last summer. It was a solemn thought and one that Katiana didn't like entertaining. She wasn't going to entertain it at all. Hurrying to put Emerson in between herself and Mina because she refused to allow the blonde to be on a corner to mull over unpleasant thoughts, Kat obliged to linking their arms. "Shots first and then ladies, we get me a burger cuz I kill for one right now. And then cranberry with vodka."

It probably said something about him that having someone stronger than him with him - whether that be emotionally, intellectually or physically, it didn't matter - made Mason grin, made a thrilling frisson of something prickle over his skin like an electric shock. That knowing that Sol could very well toss him on his ass as easily as she breathed flat out did it for him, could make him breathless - that that feeling of actual threat didn't make him cower or have his more feral hackles rise. It probably said something downright pathetic, but he didn't have a certain someone - or certain someones because Mason was pretty sure even Cayden would have something to say about it - so Mason did not feel the need to call it such.

But it was, a secret little voice in his head insisted, even as Sol shoved - any other person, any other powered individual who did not have Mason's healing capabilities and sturdiness would call it a shove, no matter what she said the intent was - at him in the middle of their dance. Because all Mason did was grin and go with it, letting her lead as she willed. "Yes ma'am," he said softly, obediently. But of course, because it was Sol and because Mason was Mason, he couldn't help but let his tone turn cheeky as he added, "'Sides, I think there's some saying or something about guys who go slow anyway. Glad to know you think I'm pretty, though. Gotta keep up with you somehow, right?"

While talking, Mason walked Sol further into the throng of dancing pairs and even groups, grinning all the while, knocking his hat off his shoulders so that it rested on his back thanks to the string Kat had said was the reason why she thought it was good for him. It was warm outside, prone to growing even more-so as the summer continued, and Mason felt the heat building up underneath it, shaking out his brown hair.

[Sorry if this time skip seems a little bit abrupt, but in the interest of moving things along I'm going to jump further on in the night. If no one has any posts for that, then we'll skip to morning.]

A few hours have passed since the night's festivities began. The music is still playing and people are still drinking, but the night is looking to be on its way to winding down. Those with less energy have started to leave for bed, and thus those who are more inclined towards energy and chatter and whatnot are the ones who tend to remain.

Time: Midnight
Weather: Scattered clouds, comfortable temperature
