Abby wiped her forehead and sighed heavily staring at the bucket. She had found this small farmhouse a few days ago and it obviously hadn’t been lived in for a few years, it was run down but she did the best she could. On the plus side there were no bodies here of previous occupants, and the air was clear free from the smell of death and decay.

The nearby river provided her with drinking water but with her food supplies running low she was getting weaker by the day, she had to think of something soon. The sun burned down as she squinted taking in her surroundings looking to see if she had any unwanted visitors. The world was falling apart and that made people desperate and a little crazy, she had been the victim of that already. Seeing the coast was clear she bent to grab the water bucket with both hands and slowly made her way back to her new home.

The peaceful, quiet air that the farm house hosted soon became polluted with the noise of a loud, revving engine and the faint smell of gasoline. Someone on a motorcycle was fast pulling up the long driveway leading to the house. Once the man reached the front of the house, he stepped off of the red and black cruiser and set the kickstand down. The apparel he had on seemed to be fitting for the loud machine; a bandanna tied back his overgrown hair, boots covered his feet, and some sunglasses were over his eyes. The leather jacket he had on had a few patches on the back; the top read 'The Red Desert Devils'. The second, largest patch was a stylized image of a devil on top of a motorcycle, kicking up dust, and the last simply read 'Reno, NV'.

The Devils were a large biker gang in the American southwest, and had garnered some fame when a chapter in Phoenix chased down and assaulted an accused child molester who escaped sentencing. The man that had pulled up to the farm house began looking at the house from the outside, and stepped in the front door, unaware that there could be anyone there watching him.

Abby hauled the water bucket up the last of the small slope leading to the house, her arms burned and her hands were sore as she struggled slowly. At first she didn't notice the sudden smell of gasoline overtaking the fresh air as she made her way up to the back door, the noise hit her first as she froze spilling some on the water on the porch. She listened carefully as the engine turned off and the panic set in, if she ran then she would have no supplies if she went inside then, well she really didn't want to take a chance with another crazy.

Slowly she placed down the bucket and nudged the door open slightly, her bag with some of her things was on a chair just inside the small kitchen, it wasn't great but it was better than nothing. Glancing down the hall at the front door whoever was round the front was still outside. She opened the door a little wider to grab her bag and go, but faltered when she heard footsteps and quickly stepped back knocking into her water bucket. She gasped loosing her footing and grabbed at the door swinging it wide 'Damn!', her Blood ran cold as she covered her mouth, but it was too late as she stared at the stranger enter the front door.

Grant looked at the old wood of the farm house, clueless to the fact that someone was in there. He gave a supporting pole a small knock as if to check its integrity, but was surprised when he heard someone gasp and fall over. After quickly moving to a vantage point, his eyes caught the sight of the young woman in a puddle of water. She didn't seem very threatening, so Grant decided to take his chances.

"Hey," he called out. "Didn't know this was your place. Sorry. We cool?" He asked, twinges of an east coast accent in his voice.

Abby didn’t move an inch she scanned to items of the kitchen, her only weapon was a baseball bat she found with lay just inside the hallway which lead to the stranger. She averted her eyes quickly so as not to give her plan away.

His voice was strong but not threatening but that did not ease her tension, his appearance covered in leather and what looked like a tattoo creeping up his neck didn’t exactly instil her faith in the stranger.

‘Yeah, um I found it a few days ago’ her voice shook slightly; she raise her voice and tried to appear confident ‘So who are you?’

He smirked slightly when she started to speak, hopefully things could work out. Also, he noticed the slight shaking in her voice. He realized he had probably scared her, and figured his rough appearance didn't help. Grant always found this a bit funny--he never thought he was a scary dude, but he did come off as a bit intimidating.

"My name's Grant," he said extending a hand, to try and further drive home some friendliness, "And you?"

She relaxed slightly the tension leaving her body as she realized he wasn't going to attack her, well not right now she still didn't trust him. She stared at his outreached hand for a few moments before reaching to for it, she still had manners. Abby noticed his hands was large and strong, she smiled at him before she quickly retreated her hand and crossed her arms in front of herself.

'I'm Abby, and this is my home' she gestured sarcastically to their surroundings before crossing her arms again. She smiled again, it had been weeks since she saw someone never mind spoke to one.

He gave a small nod and looked around slightly.

"Well then I guess I'll get out of your hair." He turned to leave, a bit disappointed that the house already had an occupant. The dry air outside had parched his throat, and he had run out of what food he had. Hopefully there would be another house nearby that he could take things from.

She stepped forward unsure what to do, a few minutes ago she was ready to run a mile but talking to someone, to another human it felt so good to her since she had been on her own.

'Please you don't have to go!' the words rushed from her mouth her British accent still very much prominent. Being on her own was being safe to Abby, but that was also very lonely and boring. 'I mean you can stay abit if you like' She gave a genuine smile and placed her hands in the back pockets of her denim shorts nervously.

Grant turned around with a grin. A decent place to stay, even for just a few hours, and some human interaction...both of these things sounded incredible. "Awesome! Thanks! I'm gonna go wheel my bike around back, if ya' don't mind." With that, he headed out front and grabbed his motorcycle, then rolled it around to the back porch. He didn't really want it sitting outside in such plain view.

When he came inside, he shrugged his jacket off and set it on a chair. Tattoos ran down each arm, as well, he was definitely inked up plenty. "Hate to ask, but do you have any food and water? I can trade for it."

She watched him leave to move his bike before she collapsed on one of the chairs. From hauling water in the sun, to an adrenaline rush kicking in, plus the fact she hadn't eaten yet meant she needed a minute. She placed her elbows on the table and rested her head in her palms.

Hearing him enter she looking up eyeing the intricate tattoos lacing his skin. She looking away as he spoke.

'Im running really low on food, think I'm down to two cans of beans. As for water' she walked to the back door and picked up the half empty bucket of water 'Spilt most of it on the porch but take what you want there is a river nearby' and dropped the bucket between them.

"Alright, thanks." He responded, reaching down and grabbing the bucket. He brought it to his face and drank from it, too thirsty to wait. "I'll go fetch some more water. If you wanna see what I have, just say the word." Grant headed back outside, bucket in hand, and began walking towards the faint sound of flowing water.

Once he got to the river, he took the bandanna off his head, then ran some water through his hair to cool down. The cool water of the river was very refreshing, and he let out a sigh of relief as it dripped from his scalp, down his face. Afterwards, he grabbed the bandanna and tied it back around like a do-rag, so it covered to top of his head and held his hair back. Leaning down, he scooped up some water and began hauling it back to the house. His stomach grumbled, but he didn't want to take the last of her food, seeing as she barely had any left. No, he could hold out longer, and find his own food later on.

Once he got back into the house, he set the bucket down on the kitchen table, and took a seat, putting his feet up.

She watched him carelessly lift the bucket to his face, it wasn't as heavy as when she filled it but still. Then again she might just be weak from lack of food. With that thought Abby grabbed her rucksack and pulled out one of her last cans and began to eat the cold beans. It was exactly tasty but her stomach felt so much better and she could feel her body relish the new energy. Placing the empty can next to her she opened a dog eared paperback she left on the table and began to read.

She paused as she watched him lift the now full heavy bucket of water onto the table. She hid a smile. 'Do you have any food? If not I have another can left.' Reaching into her rucksack she pulled out her last can and placed it next to the bucket 'There's a town down the road, I'm going for more supplies first thing tomorrow'.

He shook his head. "Nah, I ain't got any food; ran out. And you can keep your food." He tapped his fingers on the table as he listened to her mention the town. "Maybe I can go head there now and bring stuff back, that way we can call each other even."

It sounded like a good idea to him. He could ride his bike into town, grab food and supplies, and bring it back for the both of them.

A half-size school bus rambled on down the rural road, it's driver not particularly caring where she was going or where she would end up today. Bridget had just driven wherever she felt like for the last few days, but she knew she'd have to stop somewhere soon, and preferably some place where she could find some gas for the bus.

She was hesitant to take it at first, but then she had tried loading up her own car with supplies. She knew that it would be smarter to take the bus, and cram it full with as many supplies as she could find. They would be needed, by her, and whoever she found out there, if there was anyone to be found.

The bus' engine start to make strange sound, and she could feel it shaking it little more than was normal, and she sighed. The old vehicle was probably on it's last legs, and thankfully she could see the outline of a house, or a barn or something in the distance. Carefully, she managed to coax another minute or two out of the bus, before it finally broke down and started smoking within distance of a small homestead.

Without even waiting for an opinion from Abby, Grant hopped up and grabbed his jacket, intent on heading down to the town to grab food for him and his host. He went around the the back of the house and started wheeling his bike around to the front. When he reached the front of the house, he saw a curious sight.

Far down the road was what looked like a big yellow school bus. Grant had only been at the house for a little while, but he was damn sure that thing wasn't down the road earlier; you don't miss something like that. Out of his saddlebag, he grabbed a pair of binoculars, and held them up to his eyes. With them, he spotted a woman standing outside of the bus. Carefully, Grant mulled things over in his head. She definitely didn't look very dangerous, might as well approach her. She would probably end up heading to the house anyway.

Cautiously, Grant started walking down the road. Once he started to get closer, he called out. "Scuse' me!"

The voice startled Bridget a bit. She hadn't expected anyone to be around anywhere, and she had been focused on the small plume of smoke that was just now dissipating from underneath the engine hood, making sure it wasn't going to erupt into a small fire.

She turned on the heel of her boots to look at the man walking down the road towards her. He had to have come from the house, and that got her thinking as to how many other people had survived this apocalypse - she had seen no one on her way here, and she had driven a long way.

Gulping, and wishing that she had been smart enough to find a weapon somewhere, she nodded to the man and called back to him. "I'm sorry, but my ride broke down... am I in your way or on your land or something?" she asked, somewhat defensively.

Abby placed her book and can of beans back in her rucksack. She wasn't sure if the guy Grant was coming back or not but she hoped he would, she had missed having company. Running her hands through her hair she decided she better get a wash now before he came back, she grabbed a small towel she had and made her way out the back door. Taking off her clothes she rinsed them down in the water and hung them to dry on a nearby tree.

Creeping towards the waters edge she dipped her toe in. It was freezing. Trying not to think about the temperature of the water Abby took a small step back before jumping in.

The water enveloped her and her skin was suddenly alive and tingled from the coldness, a relief from the heat of the burning sun. Surfacing she laughed slightly washing her hair from the dirt, grit and smells of the past few days

Grant's eyebrows went up as yet another person approached. "You people followin' me? This is weird." He looked the newcomer up and down; the guy looked kind of dirty, with an unshaven face and worn clothes. "Yeah, we friendly too...Russianinsky." He flashed the guy a thumbs up.

He took a step back and took a wide look at everyone that had gathered. "Well we can probably head up to the house. I was planning on heading up to Fort Yates soon, since me n' the chick that lives there are out of food. Maybe we can head up there together, watch each other's backs, gather more supplies that way. C'mon."

Once they got up to the house, Grant slowly went in, looking for Abby. "Mom? I found some dogs, can I keep them?" He joked.
