Axel took a swig of his beer and turned to look at Rachel. "Couldn't tell you, Rach," he sighed. He wasn't sure if anyone was alive within a hundred mile radius of them. "Doesn't it feel like we're kids again? Going on a road-trip without parent consent. Man, those were the good days." He looked up into the sky and could see vultures soaring above. Wouldn't it be nice to be a bird, he thought. No wondering if you'd be alive the next day.
Rachel finished her sandwich. "It's so weird," she said. "We go from having a big family, great jobs, the American Dream, to nothing. I haven't even thought about it very much. I can't cry over it. I feel like it's not right to have emotions, when so many people are-"
Axel cut her off. "Don't get sappy, Rachel. This isn't the time or place." He stood, holding out his hand to help her up. She hopped back in the car while he folded the blanket. Then they were driving again. They didn't know where, or why. Just that they would need to find a place before dark.
"It's just a journal I keep. Makes me feel better to write stuff down." Will replied, tossing the book in the glove compartment and closing it shut. "Anyway, if you find something you like, let me know. I'll go grab the gun and ammo from the garage. You two make sure not to kill each other, alright?" Will joked, as he headed toward the garage.
"Yeah. Just let me make sure everything is in order." Will said as he returned to the car and grabbed one of the more empty duffel bags and pulled it out, placing the ammo inside. After locking the station wagon and reapplying the tarp, Will draped the bag's strap over his shoulder giving a small grunt as the weight of the books and ammo hit his nerves. Although he was used to it, it was still a bit of a heavy load.
"Let's go then. You lead the way, guys."
Suddenly, a man jumped out, yelling at him to drop his gun, which he had yet to realize he had already drawn. Grant didn't have much leverage here, considering he didn't keep any bullets in his firearm. "Okay man, be cool." He set his gun down on the ground, and slowly stood up. "For future reference, if ya' wanna talk, don't come out guns blazing." Letting out a heavy sigh, Grant jokingly wondered if crap like this happened to say, Bridget. When he had met her, he definitely didn't feel like he was in danger; in fact he was happy to see someone. Then again, the tattoos and biker patches probably didn't beam with friendliness.
Grant took a step forward towards him, his shoulders slumped and his hands in his jacket pockets. The psychopath comment ticked him off a little bit, seeing as he wasn't the one pointing guns around in the first place, but he couldn't really hold it against the guy; he himself might have done something similar if their positions were switched, it was just that adrenaline was still pumping a little bit and Grant was a passionate dude; it would just take some time for him to simmer down before he could let it go. "Grant. And you?"
"Grant. And you?" Grant replied, after Will asked his name. "I'm Will. Now that the guns are down, it's nice to meet you." Will extended his hand in hope of a handshake to tide things over. He knew it wasn't much, but it was a start. "And while we're here, we might as well help each other out. I'll get your back while you look around? With the luck I've had today, I wouldn't be surprised if people just start dropping from the sky."
"Hullo Will. I see you made a new friend. Any friend of Will is a friend of us I hope? Jude said with his usual optimism that Will had come to expect in the short time he'd known him. "Grant, these are the people I was telling you about. Jude and Storm. Guys, this is Grant. He's finding some food. Play nice." Will said in a joking manner.
"And by the way Grant, I have some food if you wanna trade for it. I have a box or two and I don't need that much for myself and if it's raining people like we talked about, then you're gonna need all the food you can get."
Grant merely gave a quick, cheeky salute as he passed by, intent on grabbing more food. He only turned around as Will spoke once more. "I'd take up yer' offer," he said to Will's offer to trade, "But that herb is really all I got. Some tools, too, but I need those." He looked down to the food he had gathered. "Well, I guess I got this stuff, now, too."
With a final nod, he headed out to meet with Axel and Vlad, happy with the haul of food he'd gotten away with.
He had his toolbox with him, which including a lock picking set. Kneeling down carefully, he started to unlock the door of the car, so they could rig it up to start.
