Introduction
"The dawn is not distant, nor is the night starless."
Ghouls are vampires who failed to turn completely. The Change causes physical alterations, causing them to no longer resemble the person they once were. These creatures prey on anything they can get—human and vampire alike, it does not matter to them. Vampires, however, created a system to keep them contained. It was imperative, after all, that the existence of vampires be kept a secret.
But there is something far more sinister happening within the vampiric community.
The infection has proven fatal to beings once thought to have the perfect immune system. With numbers already small to begin with, fear has gripped those who believe the disease will wipe them out.
And like any animal facing extinction, they are fighting to preserve their lives.
The best scientists in the world have been gathered by the vampire Council to manufacture a cure, however; they need a base to work with. They need the First. The only problem is, no one has seen the Ancestor in quite some time, and most believe him to be a myth.
There are whispers, though, that he has been spotted in a small town known as Sanctuary—a fitting name, perhaps, given the circumstances. The Council has sent a group of their best to investigate these whispers, but with the town's sheriff watching their every move, they'll have to be creative with their tactics. After all, it is only natural that the people of Sanctuary would be suspicious if murders started to happen with the appearance of these newcomers.
And what link does the local floral shop owner have to them?

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 3 authors
“Do you want to close up for the day? The rain will only serve as a barrier for the customers," a voice pulled her from her thoughts, as she turned towards her friend. Adrien was a strange-looking person, just like Aila was. His hair was, perhaps, a shade whiter than hers—something she didn't think was really possible. He was on the young side, almost thirty two if she remembered correctly. It made him eight years her senior, but their personalities melded well together. His features were handsome enough to be noticed—an angular structure, refined steel-blue eyes. He seemed almost unreal the first time they'd met—almost as if he were some ethereal being walking out of one of the stories her mother used to tell her.
She offered him a smile, though, and nodded her head. “We might as well," she replied, moving towards a vase, and straightened it. “The rain is light, but it's been a slow day. We can finish the arrangements tomorrow, and," she paused to turn her attention back to Adrien. He tilted his head sideways in an inquisitive manner, as if silent urging her to continue. “The order for Miss Chen is ready. Remind me to give her a call tomorrow morning." Adrien nodded his head, and in a few short minutes, they both had the shop cleaned and closed.
“Do you wish to see if your order has arrived at the bakery?" he asked as Aila slipped the key into the lock. She paused for a moment and blinked up at him. He was at least a foot taller than her, but she smiled regardless.
“I think that's a good idea. Sienna said the bakery would be receiving fresh strawberries this week, and she makes a delightful strawberry short cake," Aila replied, and already she could feel her mouth watering at the prospect of her favorite dessert. She adored anything with strawberries in it, and the bakery owner was kind enough to indulge Aila's obsession. Adrien offered her a small smile, and extended the umbrella, holding it out so that the both of them could fit underneath it.
Once she was satisfied the door was properly locked, Aila looped her arm with his and pulled him slightly as they made their way to the bakery. Despite the weather, Aila couldn't suppress the small shiver that rolled down her spine. There was something strange, something she couldn't quite explain.
She pushed it to the back of her mind.
"Excuse me. Here is your order a cup of black coffee and mocha éclairs." He paused his inner monologues for now and politely smiled at the female server. "Thank you. These éclairs look delightful." The shop he had decided to wait for his fellow coven members is a bakery where one could also enjoy the pastries offered. It seemed a good location with the consideration of those two's preferences. "Your welcome. Uhm, I'm sorry if this comes as rude. But, I've never seen you here before. A visitor?" He should also take to consideration that because of how small this town is they are easily aware of newcomers and even perhaps a tad friendly. That could be of use to him. "I have just arrived and I guess I would be a visitor. I am here to take over Dr. Brixton's work at the clinic for a while. I'm Dr. Vincent Calloway." The female's eyes sparkled at the realization of who he is. "Oh my! So you're the new doctor! How wonderful!"
The conversation was disturbed though when the door chimed indicating that a potential customer has entered. The girl's attention was taken which he expected. These newcomers were eye-catching to the people of Sanctuary including him. He released a small sigh. "You two are quite late. Did the weather bother you?" He noted in his ever-calm voice. It was indeed raining but he hardly thinks that was the cause for the tardiness. "For now, what do you two like to eat? Celeste? Arthur?"
"And my name is Celeste Calloway." The leader of the Vindictus Coven had always been cautious whenever they move. It will always be in a different identity, never giving their real names at work as they say. This time though Selene will be roleplaying as the... "Playing as the daughter to Vicentius?" That role made her raise an eyebrow. Because of their physiology, they look far younger than they truly are. Right now, she and Vicentius looked around to be the same age. "He does not even look old to have his own child."
Selene clearly expressed her disagreement with the set-up. Before, she was an heiress of a diamond company. That was fun.
Now, Selene ends up as a mere daughter to some backwater country doctor. "Why do we have to be family?" It would be more efficient if they are not connected to allow for them to move around that town.
Athanasios and Selene were actually lounging at the mansion garden provided to the Vindictus Coven by the Council. "You are my fiancé." It is a reasonable situation since the two of them are designed as a pair no matter where they go. It is a good cover to explain them being together most of the time. "Arthur Cross. I will serve as Vicentius' assistant." She looked at him in the assessment. It says that he will be a nurse. He doesn't seem to appear as an able nurse at all. And she, for the most part, is the reason why they truly moved to Sanctuary.
"I am a victim of a particularly violent crime and suffer from trauma. So, we came here to help me recover from the psychological burden." Selene was silent for a moment before smiling with such wickedness. It was a good thing that she has a beautiful face so it didn't appear like one of those horror stories. "That means I can be spoiled rotten, isn't it?" Athanasios knew what she meant. She had always preferred roles where she can be selfish as she wants. It is probably why she was given that kind of backstory this time. His role before was a bodyguard and this time as a lover. "Just do not go beyond, Selene." His voice was monotonous as a blank paper but she knew well that he was giving her a reminder. Fundamentally, she is still a prisoner and him, the guard. And this coven is a prison under the command of the Council's shadow. "When did I ever not go beyond, Athanasios?"
In any case, the two soon made their leave to join Vicentius at Sanctuary. He seemed to have already arrived there to scope the area. Now, Selene was also there. She could see why it would be safer for them to be a family unit in this place. It was far smaller than she had imagined and it seemed it is a tightknit community. It meant that outsiders will gain their attention easily. If they arrived here as individuals who do not know each other, it would give the people here the right to be suspicious as newcomers kept popping up. Their backgrounds also made sense. Vicentius was truly incorrigible in hiding who they are.
Selene stepped off the bus as Athanasios covered her with an umbrella and kept her close with his arm around her shoulder. It was raining. What a welcome... She hid the glimmer of interest in her eyes "He should be at the bakery of this town." It was whispered to her as she did not respond and let him led the way. After all, they are now acting out their roles. It did not take long to spot the blue hair through the store window and soon, they entered the establishment in which... "You two are quite late. Did the weather bother you?" Vicentius greeted them in that manner. "For now, what do you two like to eat? Celeste? Arthur?" She removed herself from Athanasios hold and approached Vicentius. "Vic..."
Without much care who sees, Selene sat on Vicentius' lap and wrapped her arms around his neck where she buried her face at its crook. She was even trembling a bit. Athanasios, on the other hand, seemed unbothered as he took the vacant seat across Vicentius. "The release took a while. She missed you a lot." He simply played along. "I would like something with strawberries and tea." He stated while making himself comfortable in his seat. "Right... Do you have tomato juice here?" He added as he finally took notice of the server girl near the table. "If so, do make it very red."
“Doc is out of town on an emergency so I had to reschedule my appointment," she spoke, a frown tugging at her lips. There was a light crease in her brows, evidence to how genuine her emotions were. “There's a replacement for him, some doctor named Calloway," she continued as Aila merely nodded.
“I've heard, and I'm sure everyone has heard by now," she replied, chuckling softly as she glanced towards Adrien. He nodded in response. He'd heard of the doctor replacing Brixton, however; the replacement wasn't someone he was familiar with. He hasn't left Sanctuary in quite some time, so perhaps the doctors he knew out west were different now. Regardless, he didn't let it affect him. He'd learned long ago that humans came and went as fast as he could blink.
“Thanks for letting me come with you. Zeke didn't feel up to the weather, and since it's my day off..." she trailed off. She didn't need to say more since Adrien knew what she was referring. Aila did as well, since she smiled brightly.
“It is of no consequence to us, Miss Bellamy," he replied, causing her to frown in his direction. He chuckled.
“You know I don't like being called Miss, Adrien. We've known each other for how long, now? You can call me Amaryllis; I don't mind," she retorted, her lips turning slightly into a pout. He knew, but it felt strange calling another person by their given name. Old habits were hard to break, he supposed. Before anything else could be stated, they'd arrived at their destination. He folded the umbrella so that he could hold the door open for the two women, and waited until they walked in. Tucking the umbrella under his arm, Adrien stopped in his tracks, and glanced towards a booth near the window.
A woman with dark hair was tucked into a blue-haired man's lap, and seemed to be upset about something. The blond-haired man, however, was the one that Adrien focused on. There was something strangely familiar about him, as if he knew him from somewhere. He frowned slightly as he overheard the conversation.
“I'm afraid we don't carry tomato juice. We do have a variety of teas, though, if you want to browse our menus," the waitress replied, handing a menu to the man. He shook his head and stood with Aila and Miss Bellamy. As usual, Aila requested a strawberry filled danish with a strawberry tart. Miss Bellamy, however, took a piece of the key lime pie, and both of the women walked off towards an empty table not too far from where the blue-haired man sat with the other two.
“Anything else I can get for you, Mr. Belmonte?" Sienna asked, flashing a smile at Adrien. He shook his head, though.
“My deepest thanks, Miss Vitali."
He carried the orders to the table, and sat so that his back was facing the other table. Amaryllis and Aila were in the seat in front of him, and he placed their desired items in front of them, content to let them control the conversation.
It was not really surprising to see her pull such a stunt of sitting on his lap. He was grateful that he resisted the urge to push her away like some infected person. If he did, he would be having a hard time to sell the narrative of them being siblings in this town. They may be members of the same coven but it does not mean they are intimately close with each other. It would be more perfect to describe their relationship with each other as a ticking timebomb.
It is true that he was the one who prepared this cover for them. He will be the new doctor caring for his broken little sister and the trusted childhood friend shall help him who is also the lover of his sister. This could even earn some brownie points from the residents of this town. It was a good story but he felt regretting his actions a bit. It is because he would be fanning the selfishness of the Endless Witch.
That is dangerous. He cast a look at Athanasios who seems as unmotivated as ever. He can only depend on the Council's dog to keep this Witch under control for now. That is when he noticed newcomers to the bakery. They are a group of trio just like them. The difference is that they are residents of the town. He knows since he had gathered all basic information including notable residents beforehand. They did not interest him however when he read their details on paper but that white-haired girl. There is a peculiar scent about her. Something he cannot pinpoint yet. It was interesting since it stirred the depths of him. He should look into it later. The other companions did not leave an impression he would be willing to follow at the moment. It did not mean he would not be checking them thoroughly. He does not like leaving any stone unturned. "Ms. Doris can I order a lemon balm tea and a slice of apple pie." He spoke rather more softly than before. It could be interpreted due to the black-haired girl clinging to him.
"They don't have tomato juice, so tea will have to do, for now." He looked at Selene. His voice did not falter in its gentleness and his eyes carried warmth. The trained ear would notice though the subtle sternness in his words. It would not raise alarms though because it could just be a brother and sister discussion. The truth is different, however. He is aware that Athanasios was implying that the Witch pulled another stunt. This time it was far ridiculous than sitting on his lap. This is why it is really dangerous to have her be in a position that would require him and Athanasios to be softer on her especially in the public. She is certainly taking advantage of it. The previous roles may have stoke her egotism but it kept her restricted through him being able to shut her down even in the public eyes. His role is an antagonist to hers. It was a bit different now."Arthur, has she taken her medicine?"
Even the fact that new customers entered the bakery also fly passed him. Athanasios was more interested in the menu than anything else right now. But eventually, he had finally chosen an order. "A slice of strawberry shortcake and black tea." The waitress jotted it down, took the mean, and then left to prepare the order. "Oh. Wait. There is no order for her." Doris stopped midway if possible, she would have comically sweatdropped. It seemed that this guy was quite absentminded. But, she just smiled at him. "Dr. Calloway already ordered. Don't worry." He looked at Vicentius. Doris took that as a cue for her to leave the three newcomers alone.
Athanasios procured a pill bottle with a prescription labeled on it. Vicentius actually prepared this. The Coven Leader is very thorough. But, he wasn't sure if Selene would refuse but he should be prepared for it. She had never made things easy. They can't afford to make a scene as well. But if they do, he took note of the people inside the bakery. That is when he noticed that the booth in front of them was occupied. He cared little for the two girls but the back of that white-haired person. His eyes narrowed. He wanted to see the face.
That person...
"I don't want to... It makes me drowsy and tastes bitter. I don't want to drink it." Selene's response resembled that of a pouting and spoiled child. It took Athanasios' attention as he set aside his contemplations at some other time. She looked at Vicentius with her purple eyes glistening. "Please don't make me drink it, Vic. You say you'll make it up to me right? Don't make me drink it." Their voices were not loud but the actions were probably raising awareness about them. Troublesome...
"But, it's bitter..." Selene stuck out her tongue in disgust just like a child. She was actually enjoying making things difficult for the two men near her. They never clarified what kind of broken person she is. So, she improvised. There is nothing wrong about a little sister clinging to her older brother with that kind of premise. She could tell though that Vicentius is not pleased with her stunt. His mask is nigh impenetrable but she sees thing hidden in the dark better. It is fun making the so-called Vampire Prince squirm inwardly. He even tried to tell her off as well as telling her to end her none-drinking streak. Anyway, she is also curious about what the pretend fiancé would do.
Selene covered her lips. Her cheeks were flushed red and her ears felt they were burning. That was a good reaction from what Athanasios could see. It seemed that she is really a good actress but not that much since he could taste his own blood. "What are you doing?!" She latched onto Vicentius burying her face on the man's chest. "You need to take your medicine and..." He looked around a bit to see the expressions' of the others but he really could not care. "I don't see anything wrong when I want to kiss my fiancée." She responded without revealing her face. "...Idiot." Her ears were still burning. He did not say anything more and returned to his seat. It was just in time as their orders arrived. "This looks delicious."
“Hey, Ai? Are you listening?" Amaryllis brought Aila out of her thoughts, and she blinked slowly at the woman. She offered an apologetic smile, and nodded her head. “Daydreaming is going to get you into trouble one of these days, Aila," she continued, but Aila knew she meant it in jest. “As I was saying, do you think you could make the arrangement for me?" she stated, causing Aila to tilt her head. Adrien had remained mostly quiet during their conversation, occasionally taking a bite of his food, and kept his focus on Amaryllis as she spoke. It was now on Aila, though, as he seemed to be waiting for her to respond.
“Of course, Amaryllis," she finally responded. “I can make the arrangement," she continued, watching the smile on Amaryllis' face, bloom. “I've completed Miss Chen's arrangement, and then I have Mr. Aldric's arrangement. After I complete his, I can start with yours." Amaryllis pursed her lips together as she sighed dramatically.
“You need to stop hanging around Adrien; he's rubbing off on you," she stated, earning a light chuckle from him. Aila huffed slightly in an amused manner. “I don't think I could handle two of him," she added, but the smile on her face meant that she was only joking.
“I'm afraid old habits are hard to break, Miss Bellamy. Where I am from, it is proper to address one such as yourself in the manner of which I speak. If it bothers you greatly, I will endeavor to rectify my ways," Adrien spoke, causing Amaryllis to groan slightly.
“You sound like one of those cheesy knights from the movies," she muttered.
“Hm, I agree, but it's part of his charm," Aila defended, earning a light chuckle from her friend. The waitress came by the table, placing a tray on their table with couple of cups. From the smell of it, the contents of the cups were tea. “Oh, I think those are theirs, Doris," she stated to the waitress. Doris immediately turned red, and uttered an apology before taking the tray to the correct table. For a brief moment, Aila made eye contact with Vic, offered him a small smile, and returned her attention to her friends before it was taken again.
She had over heard the blond-haired man, Arthur, speak of Celly as his fiancée. Aila's attention was back on the woman and man, and immediately, she began thinking of an arrangement to make for them. As a congratulatory bouquet and as something to welcome them to Sanctuary. It was a small enough town for her to recognize the three of them as the newcomers, and she had already planned on sending them a welcome gift, beforehand. The recent information was just the push she needed, however; she wasn't sure if they would prefer certain flowers, or if they were even allergic to them.
Sometimes a good intention wasn't always the best, so she pushed the thought to the back of her mind, for now.
He inwardly sighed as Selene began to beg to him in a manner similar to a child. He definitely wanted to grab her by the chin and reprimand her. That is not possible though due to the nature of their relationship in this town. She presented herself as someone attached to him and he played along. It would be troublesome to change the narrative at this point. "You know I can't allow that. The medicine is good for you." He gently patted her head but truly he wanted to rip her away from himself. The role he wanted was a stern brother and for Athanasios be the pampering one. She really took the initiative in establishing the baseline. He had opted for them to meet at the house where they'll be staying while they were in town before. He changed it though. It seemed advantageous for their cover if they paraded that they are a family unit instead of doing it after proper introductions. "I'll make it up to you in another way. For now, you should take your medicine, okay?" It was then that Athanasios finally joined in.
He watched the exchange between the two. He must say that he did not expect what Athanasios did. It was quite effective to cement the idea that they are a couple. The most important thing for him is that Selene was startled by it. He was rather sensitive to smells so he picked up on the scent of blood. That was entertaining as she responded by burying her face on his chest. It was rather an unpleasant feeling. "Now now, Arthur. I know how much you love my sister. But, do be subtle." He patted her head as Athanasios reasoned it was to make the medicine sweeter. "Girls don't like pushy guys and I won't stay quiet if you bully her too much." He was certain that Athanasios was not listening at all. He is similar to Selene in a way that they move to their own music. He had just gotten used to it and started to adapt his methods with knowing how they are.
"Celly. Your food and tea are here. You should eat it. After that, I'll show you our new house." He gently ushered Selene to look at the food served. That should take her attention for now. "Excuse me for a bit, I need to make a call. I will just be outside." He finally had Selene sit properly on her own. "Arthur, I'll entrust her to you." He left his seat and went to step outside but seek Doris first. "Ms. Doris. can you help me with something?" He then went outside just under the awning as he made his call. Doris, on the other hand, delivered a plate of white chocolate-strawberry tiramisu to, "Here you go, Aila. An apology from the Doctor for being a bit of noisy as he says."
"This place is good. He said it would be..." Selene's hand was currently poking the apple pie ordered for her with a fork. "It would be fine." Athanasios nonchalantly answered as placed down his cup of tea. "This is a new start." He took another bite of his strawberry shortcake. "What if it is no good...?" This time she stopped poking her apple pie and instead took the piece. "What will you do?" She then placed that apple pie piece in front of his lips. It seemed she wanted him to eat it. "Move on." He then ate the apple pie given to him. But from the moment of the bite, she pushed the fork further into his mouth. "Diligent. Reliable." She continued pushing the fork deeper while he did not show any outwardly resistance or expression that denoted he is being hurt.
Athanasios instead acted by holding Selene's wrist. She stopped her poking and met his gaze. She must admit that his eyes are remarkable. They were actual blue jewels made into eyes. They sparkle and reflect like a flawless crystal. It is something unique to him. She wondered if it was a mutation when he was turned or perhaps a trait he was born to. She actually tried many times to pluck it out but she has yet to succeed in that. "Ever loyal." He then removed the fork inside his mouth in a rather slow motion that was almost sensual. Spectators would think that the two were flirting when in truth they were not at all. They were actually testing each other out once more.
"Eat later. Your brother won't be pleased." Athanasios then proceeded to eat Selene's share. "Of course. Hmm... Do you know what our new house looks like?" Athanasios answered in between his bites. "He said it has a big garden." She nodded thoughtfully. A garden is always good to have. "Will you fix it?" He stopped for a moment and tilted his head to the side. It has always been his task to manage the garden whichever house they go to. He didn't complain. He liked it. "What do you want it to have?" She leaned back on her chair and threw her head back as she looked at the ceiling. "Lycoris Radiata."
“I didn't know you and the doc were friends. Since when did you manage to get him as your admirer, Ai?" she asked in a teasing manner. Unfortunately, Aila merely blinked at her and tilted her head in a confused manner. Amaryllis was expecting her cheeks to turn red, or some sort of denial. Instead, Aila pursed her lips together, though she was smiling. It was apparent that she was trying not to laugh at Amaryllis.
“I'm not sure he meant it that way, Amaryllis. Dorris said it was an apology for being loud, even though they weren't."
Sometimes Aila could be dense, and Amaryllis sighed heavily.
“Hm, I have to agree, Miss Bellamy."
“Then why was it directed only for her?" she countered, watching as Adrien blinked and turned towards the plate. It had been specifically placed in front of Aila, and Dorris had said as much. No one did that unless there was something going on, but then again, Amaryllis was a hopeless romantic. Aila rolled her eyes, though, and pushed the plate so that it was in the middle of all three of them.
“I'm sure it was meant for the three of us. Would you like a piece?" she asked, holding up a fork towards her. Adrien shook his head, though, indicating he did not. The two of them would have to share it, if that was the case. Aila's head turned in the direction of the two others, the engaged couple from what Amaryllis had overheard. She didn't mean to, since she wasn't really too interested. She could pull up their files at a later time if it suited her; she was a deputy after all.
“You know it's not nice to eavesdrop on a conversation you are not a part of, Aila," she stated, watching as Adrien nodded in agreement. Aila pursed her lips together almost in a pout-like manner.
“I know, but they mentioned something about fixing a garden," she muttered, finally taking a bite of the pastry. She placed the fork down, though, and pushed the plate towards Amaryllis, causing Adrien to look up from his coffee. “It's still early in the afternoon; I'm going to go take inventory of the shop and open it back up for a little while longer."
Adrien made to stand, however; Aila shook her head as if to stop him. “You two continue eating without me. When you're done, you're free for the rest of the day, Adrien. Enjoy it for me," she spoke before taking her leave. Aila really loved her shop—that much Amaryllis knew. She also knew that Aila was excited about the potential prospect of helping restore a garden if they asked her for it.
So, everything is there already. He had arranged for basic furniture to be delivered and for the place to be cleaned up. There were also old artworks still inside. He simply let it be. That is why he has this inkling that his coven's new living space would be considered similar to those olden mansions present in those scary movies. He does not see anything wrong about it. That kind of atmosphere is fitting for the likes of them. The only thing that would be a problem would be its grounds and garden. The last time he saw it resembled a jungle of mess. He could leave that to Athanasios. They may not be staying for a long time but he does like his abode to be presentable at best. He does not like leaving things hanging. He replied to the realtor and decided to return inside the bakery. The only issue is the scent of blood floating ever so whimsically through the air. His eyes quickly narrowed as he tried to find out where it came from. He failed though because as fast as it came, it was gone at the same speed. It was also not helpful that it was raining. The scent was being washed away.
It was then he heard the exchange on the other table. The white-haired girl was to leave as well. Her scent still strikes his chord of interest. It could be considered forward but if his instincts are right, he cannot take the risk of her getting into trouble, not until he answered her, the question. "Excuse me. I hope I am not bothering you and your friends. I am Vincent Calloway. I heard from Ms. Doris that you might be able to help with a bit of garden problem." This is Athanasios' job but it would not be so terrible to have a bit of help. It would also give him a good way to know about her.
In any case, Vicentius said that they should leave now. It was something about the realtor and them going to the house they would be staying in. Selene had no objections about that but she could tell something odd. Anyway, Vicentius did not wait for their answer and went towards the counter. It was most likely to settle the bill. Athanasios roused from his inner mutterings at that point and noticed the server taking the untouched éclairs and cleaning up the utensils. "It's better to eat it here." He noted to no one in particular. She placed her index finger on his lips. "Do you want to eat it here?" Her tone was inviting but whether it had malice or harmless seduction that is something he determined to be lacking in both. "Take out."
"I'm drowsy now from the medicine... Carry me." Selene had a smile on her face as she waited for Athanasios' next move. I want to sleep too... With that thought, he carried her bridal style while she wrapped her arms around his neck and laid her head on his chest. She was really having fun playing the doted girl by these two vampires around her. As for him, he wanted to be carried too and sleep. He looked at her momentarily before going to Vicentius' side who seemed to be interacting with the other customers inside the bakery.
Perhaps, it was intentional or not, either way, "Is she gonna help, Arthur?" Selene's timing was impeccable that Athanasios decided to set aside his thoughts for now. "She is already helping." He stated as she looked at him in question. "Really?" He nodded and looked at the girl with twilight sunset color. "Lycoris Radiata" Selene looked at the said girl and nodded in understanding. "You are right. She looks just like it." But despite how his eyes never left the twilight sunset girl. His thought is... Sleepy...
“I'd be happy to help. Oh, perhaps I should introduce myself, first." she replied, her smile softening to something more manageable, it seemed. “My name is Aila, but you may call me Ai. Everyone does," except for Adrien. Monikers were something he wasn't quite comfortable with using. There was something a little too intimate, too sentimental behind it. He wasn't quite sure if he'd ever be comfortable with them.
“And these are my friends, Adrien and Amaryllis. Amaryllis is the town's deputy, and Adrien helps me at my shop," she continued, introducing Adrien and Amaryllis to the doctor. It was fine with Adrien; he'd never been able to introduce himself to others in quite the same way. It was always awkward.
“If there is a problem within the confines of your garden, she will be able to help you greatly," he spoke, offering the doctor a small smile. His eyes, however, swept to the side as the man named Arthur, and his fiancée, Celeste, approached. Arthur was familiar in a way that Adrien could almost taste it in the back of his mouth, which was a strange thought for him. He didn't really taste anything. Still, it wasn't an unpleasant feeling. If he'd recall the man, it would happen on it's own time. Adrien did not like to rush things.
“You'll meet the town's sheriff, eventually," Amaryllis chimed in, her eyes sweeping towards Arthur. They held gazes for a moment, but she lifted a brow almost as if she were confused as to why he was staring at her. It didn't seem to bother her, though, and she turned her attention back towards Dr. Calloway. “If you ever need a tour of the town, it's a pretty small one that I can give it to you. Or if you have any questions about it, I'll do my best to answer them. It's a small town where everyone knows everyone, so don't feel too off-put if people start scandalous rumors about you all."
He supposed she had a fair point. Most of the towns people were middle-aged or older with the younger generation being around Aila's age. They didn't stay in the small town, not when they were going to college in other cities, or just trying to get away from the confines of a small area. It had it's perks, though. Cold winters, decent summers, and beautiful springs. Even autumn was beautiful. It also had the benefit of being near the mountains, which meant a sort of isolation.
“I am not much use, but I would offer my services as well, if Miss Bellamy were not able to." He only worked at the floral shop, but knew the town, perhaps better, than anyone here.
"Nice to meet you as well, Ms. Amaryllis. Mr. Adrien." The two offered a few snippets of statements. "Actually, I do intend to visit the Police Station to formally introduce myself to the Sheriff once things settle down at my end." It was then shortly that Athanasios and Selene joined him. He could see it though that his little sister was acting up again being carried like a fragile princess. "That is right. Let me introduce to you, my family." He then looked at Selene with gentleness. "This is Selene, my younger sister." He then gently patted her head. "This man is Arthur Cross, my future brother-in-law, and a nurse. He will work together with me at the clinic."
He did expect that his companions could introduce themselves but it is best not to leave it by chance. He had always been the one to do most of the talking since Selene and Athanasios are rather peculiar by choice when socializing. "That is nice of you, Ms. Amaryllis. Mr. Adrien. I hope you two would not mind when I take the offer." He then chuckled ever so lightly. "I have been told that it is a small town. I am not worried about rumors too much. I just hoped they don't talk too much about my sister though." He said the latter part with a sense of sadness and care while glancing at Selene. "Anyway, I would be expecting your help with the garden then, Ms. Aila." He then procured a calling card from his breast pocket and handed it to her. It contained his name, occupation which is a doctor specializing in internal medicine, and most importantly the contact details. He also handed his calling card to Amaryllis and Adrien for good measure.
"Please feel free to contact me if you are feeling under the weather or if there is any concern you believe I could assist in." He kindly offered. He believed that is a natural thing for a doctor to do. "Ms. Aila, may I have your contact details so I could contact you about the garden work?" Once given to him, he thanked her and proceeded... "Speaking of which, I would also like to ask where Aegis Manor could be located within the town. I was just told it was at the edge somewhere. I am to meet my realtor there." He had a rather helpless yet embarrassed smile on his face. This was, of course, all but a guise, then again everyone wears a mask based on the situation at hand.
For now, Selene buried her face further into Athanasios' chest. Her arms tightened around his neck. This implied that she is uncomfortable with meeting new people or even a show of dislike. This is however just an act for her, an entertaining show for her to enjoy while making the boys with her squirm once in every five seconds. They should do that much after all since they dragged her to this backwater town for some information verification.
Truthfully, Selene does not care about the mission or the implication of their success for the vampire society. She simply wants to do what she wants.
Until Selene could do that completely again, she will cooperate but with her considerate terms of course. She has never been the good girl in any portion of her life even with the watchful dog that keeps her in check. Actually, that watchdog pulled her closer as if hiding her from everyone's eyes. She must say that Athanasios has been responding rather well. It reminded her before how he would just stand there or even at times just ignore everything around him. Those type of responses made quite the headache for Vicentius. Eventually, Athanasios deigned to respond despite how limited they are accordingly. It just took years and years of missions though.
"Arthur, going to sleep..." Selene whispered back as she closed her eyes. This time, it was not really an act. The medicine that she had been fed with earlier does really make her sleepy. Athanasios did not respond any further and allowed her to sleep. That would mean things would be a lot quieter and uncomplicated without her input. Still, they should go already and it looks like that Vicentius has yet to finish the conversations.
"Vic. She has fallen asleep."It is best to wrap these talks. They could pick it up at some later time. Athanasios wanted to sleep as well.
“You're not too far from it, actually," she responded, turning so that she was glancing out towards the street. “If you take a left here, you can follow the road all the way towards the edge of the town. It's right before you reach the forest road," she continued, turning her attention back towards the doctor.
“It is about fifteen minutes, time wise, from here," Adrien added, taking a drink from his tea. “If you'd like assistance, we would be more than happy to show you the way," he stated, his gaze just lifted over the brim of his tea cup. Amaryllis huffed lightly, though, as if she were amused by something.
“You say it like you want them to get lost," she stated, chuckling lightly as Adrien frowned.
“On the contrary, Miss Bellamy. I only wish for their safe journey," he replied, causing Aila to shake her head and roll her eyes. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she liked these people. For what it was worth.
A week into the meeting, Aila sighed softly as she trimmed the last set of thorns from the rose stems. She didn't need her customers to prick themselves on them, and it was something she enjoyed doing. Vincent and his family would be passing by the shop sometime in the afternoon to pick up their order. She didn't have spider lilies in stock when it had been requested of her, however; she'd managed to find someone not too far who could get them for her. It was a request she wanted to fulfill. The chiming of the front door brought her attention away from her thoughts, and she turned to greet the potential customer.
“Welcome to Elysian Fields," she greeted, the soft smile on her face growing when she recognized the person. “Zeke! How was your vacation!" she asked excitedly as the town's sheriff entered her shop. He smiled tiredly in her direction, something worn and exhausted behind his soft brown eyes. His hair, a dark brown color, was slightly tussled, as if he'd just woken up. Perhaps he did?
“Good, it was good," he replied, a slight rashness to his voice. Aila tilted her head, though, and pursed her lips together. “I think I'm catching a cold, though," he added, causing Aila to sigh heavily. “And what of you, Miss Ryuzaki, how has business been for you?" he asked, leaning over the counter as she smiled at him.
“It's been a little slower than usual, but I did get a big order in last week. The customers who placed the order will be here soon, if you want to meet them," she stated, leaning over to grab a single yellow tulip. She clipped the bottom of it, and placed it in a tube of water before handing it to Zeke. “Your favorite, right?" he chuckled.
“You know me too well. Where's Adrien? Is he finally on a vacation, too?" he asked, glancing around the shop as if mentioning Adrien's name would summon him.
“No, he's out with Amaryllis getting more fertilizer. He'll be back in a few minutes," she replied. “Stay, though, and meet the new residents of Sanctuary. You'll like them, they're really... interesting." It was the only polite way of saying that she liked them.
"Oh, I hope it would not be too much of a bother, Mr. Adrien. It would be a great help. I am not the best with directions too much." He laughed in warm embarrassment. It was at that point that Athanasios took his attention by saying that Selene has fallen asleep. That is the side effect of her medicine. It is a good thing though as the rest of the events would be moving at an easier pace. This means that they would need to leave now. It was no problem since he had accomplished what he had set to do. "Keep her comfortable, Arthur." He said as he looked at Selene and gently caressed her face.
It is clear for the audience to see that the Calloway siblings have a deep bonding with one another. That they truly care for each other. "I hope you don't mind that if we could leave now. It is best for my sister to sleep on a bed." They then went on their way while he extended his senses as much as he could through the rainy weather. One could never know what is waiting in this town. It does seem that it was not as simple as he had thought at first.
The week passed just like that. His position as the town's doctor had already been known over Sanctuary but he has yet to officially function. There were some things that he needed to fix at his supposed workplace. That doctor is a miser when it comes to equipment. He could let it be but that would make his investigation rather slow so he replaced it with new and advanced tools. There was also the Aegis Manor needed to be fixed up as much as he preferred along with the gardens being worked on by Athanasios with the aid of Aila. It had been a busy week for settling down. It did eventually simmer down so he should open shop tomorrow formally.
That did remind him though that he should pick up the ordered spider lilies. Aila had informed him earlier. It seemed that Athanasios was fulfilling Selene's request as stated in their characters. The garden was actually looking rather beautiful but Athanasios still wanted more varieties. He was not going to obstruct the guy since that is the bone he is willing to throw towards the dog. He would be footing the bill about that then. Selene, on the other hand, has been acting up since she is getting bored cooped up in the Manor. That is why he decided they would be going as a family. Athanasios would make the choices and Selene should be there since it is her flowers that had arrived. That is how they arrived at the Flower Shop named Elysian Fields together.
"Good afternoon, I am Vincent Calloway. I would be replacing Dr. Brixton for the meantime." He politely introduced himself. It should not be odd since that is how he had presented himself these past few days. "Ms. Aila, we are here to pick up our order and place new orders." He glanced at Athanasios briefly before presenting a small box from the bakery. He picked up a box of strawberry-filled pastries. "This is for you Ms. Aila. It is a thank for your assistance this past week." He kindly smiled at her and also towards the resident sheriff.
That ancestor or whatever should just show up... Selene closed the book she was reading in impatience. Right now, she just wants to leave this place. She expected something exciting to happen from seeing Vicentius' action towards those three residents especially towards the white-haired girl at the bakery during their arrival to town. But, it was ZERO. There had been no new updates other than fixing this Manor and the clinic. That was not really a matter that interests her. It was such a small town which makes it so boring. How peaceful can this town be?
Selene stood from her seat and left the book at the table as she walked away. She instead made her way to another bookshelf and took out a book written in the language of Sanskrit. "For a museum, it had interesting books. But, that's the end of it." She muttered to herself then threw the book.
It was discarded like some crumpled paper as Selene left the library. It is not required that she was always within the sights of her watchdog or the ever-trusted coven leader. The Council had given her a wiggle room so to speak. But, she was still being restricted even in that manner. Moreover, she really cannot be far away from them. She has a specified distance and that annoys her very much. After all, she does not like being told what to do or be lorded over by others. Stupid Council. I'll make them pay for this certainly. That thought echoed in her head as she made her way to the gardens.
Athanasios did not respond and simply looked back at the gardens. It was cleaned up and landscaped with such intricacy. The messy jungle has turned into a scenery resembling that of fairy tales. It has always been like that when he is involved. Then again, that white-haired woman called Aila helped. With that saying, she has yet to see the flowers she liked to have here. "Where is the Lycoris Radiata?" It was only then that Athanasios spoke. "They have arrived." Hearing that she smiled rather happily. "I want to pick them up. Let's pick them up, Arthur." He nodded his head and walked passed her. "Ah." He stopped midway. "Vic is coming."
Just like so, the three of them arrived at Elysian Fields. Selene was holding onto Athanasios' arm while hiding behind him. She is supposed to be the type that does not like strangers or other people besides her fiancé and brother. However... This is a new face. Something, interesting might happen. As for the watchdog, he did not introduce himself or anything. His expression did not state whether he was being arrogant at all. Instead, he exuded a presence that seems so immensely lax. Anyway, it is best to let Vicentius handle the talking again. Athanasios never liked talking. Although, he did address Aila. "We're here for the spider lilies." He is also on point in the things he really likes.
“Welcome to Sanctuary, Dr. Calloway. I'm Ezekiel Jones, but everyone here calls me Zeke. Hopefully you'll enjoy your stay here, for however long that may be," he spoke, turning towards Vincent and the others. Aila nodded her head in response to Arthur's statement, though, and walked to the back to grab their order. She shuffled around the back, grabbing the pot that held the spider lilies, before pursing her lips together. She had over ordered in her excitement to help, and she doubted they needed more than two plantings worth. Then again... one could never have too many of their favourite flower, right? With that in mind, she grabbed the first pot and made her way back to the front.
“Here's the first order," she stated, placing the pot on the counter. Zeke raised a brow in her direction, almost in a manner that seemed to ask if she needed help. She shook her head, and walked to grab the second pot. “And here's an extra one, on the house, as a housewarming gift," she stated, placing the second one next to the first. Before she could say anything else, Zeke coughed lightly in his hands, causing Aila to turn her attention towards him. She pursed her lips together and made her way around the counter, pressing the back of her hand to his forehead.
“I'm fine, Ai," he stated as if reading her mind. Still, that didn't chase the concern from her face. He didn't seem fine, and they both knew it. “Don't mind me, I'm going to head back to the station," he stated, leaning away from her hand. “Hopefully, you won't need my service, but you know the number to call if you do," he stated, causing Aila to sigh heavily.
“You should at least see the doctor, Zeke," she muttered as he walked away.
“I just did," he replied, giving her a small wink causing her to snort softly. Once he left, Aila rolled her eyes and shook her head.
“What orders would you like to place? We have some seeds if you want to grow your own flowers, but depending on the breed, I might have to order them in," she replied, turning her attention back to the family. It was then that the front door chimmed again, and Adrien and Amaryllis appeared.
“Oh, good afternoon," he was the first to greet them, holding two bags of fertilizer that seemed to be at least fifty pounds each. Amaryllis wasn't too far behind, holding on to just one, and she smiled in the direction of the Calloways and Arthur.
It was then that she got the ordered spider lilies. She even added another free pot as a housewarming gift. He has never shown great interests in plants and flowers. This particular flower though held his interest. There is a reason why Selene chose this. There was no way to cancel it since his so-called sister had declared first that it is her favorite. He could not do anything else since he is supposed to be a doting older brother. Its very sight irritates him but that did not show on his face at all. That is when his attention shifted towards Ezekiel who coughed. It doesn't sound terrible but Aila's reaction warranted a deeper observation from him. He would have intervened but he held back sensing the flow of conversation.
"Celeste, don't you have something to say and give?" He noted with a smile and glanced at Athanasios to make sure that things are properly done. He then looked back at Aila. "Mr. Ezekiel seems to be stubborn." He went to the counter and looked at the second pot of spider lilies. "I'll drop by the station and see the sheriff. I'll take a look at him as well. We shall see how it goes from there." It was not really an issue for him since his statements would be natural for being a good doctor. It was mostly done out of personal interests. He did want to confirm something. "Thank you for the housewarming gift."
"Sunflower, Wisteria, Lotus, Hydrangea, Marigold, and Dahlia for now." That is what Athanasios wants for now. He was certain that he would add more as the days go by. After all, he wants a place where he could take a nap comfortably. He listed it down and handed it to Aila. "Arthur, plant more Lycoris!" Selene looked up to him as she was now holding a pot of the spider lily as if it was some kind of precious treasure. Her expression was quite bright as well. It never ceases to amaze him how much of an actress she is. Then again, she is well-versed with emotions more than anyone he knew. "Okay." He caressed her face ever so gently. It was at that point Vicentius shifted attention to them.
Selene inwardly growled at what Vicentius was implying with his words. "Vic..." She was clearly hesitant as her hold on the pot of spider lily tightened. Her brightened expression shifted into that of doubt. Athanasios understood what Vicentius meant with the look given to him. "You can do it." He reached for the pot of spider lily from her hands. She did not give it away as she looked down. A few minutes passed before she released her hold and the spider lily was now secured by Athanasios. "Okay..."
"We--We would like to- thank yo--you..." Selene was stuttering while twiddling with her fingers. It was an adorable sight if it was for the fact that Vicentius and Athanasios knew the truth behind it. "So... We would like li--ke to invite you... I mean..." She stopped a moment and then bit her lower lip, before continuing on. "for... dinner..." Her voice was incredibly soft. "Invite... Ms. Aila... Ms. Amaryllis... Mr. Adrien..." She said those names while looking at the floor. It seems she didn't want to make eye contact because she was extremely shy. Taking one deep breath, "Please come!" After saying that loud enough, she ran to Athanasios' side and buried her face on his back. But one could see that her ears were burning.
“I'd have to check my schedule back at the station, but I don't see why not," she answered. It wasn't a bad way to get to know the newcomers, either. Even if their stay was going to be temporary, meeting new people was always nice. She knew Aila loved meeting new people considering that the young woman hadn't really left Sanctuary. She wasn't entirely sure why, but Aila had never expressed interest in leaving. Maybe it had to do with her family? Shoving the thought to the back of her mind, Amaryllis turned her attention towards the other two.
“I agree with Miss Bellamy. It would be good to learn of your endeavors," Adrien spoke, causing her to snort softly. He really did have a strange way of speaking. It was almost as if he were from another time, one that had similar dialects. Maybe he was raised mostly isolated? “Perhaps, in return, you would be kind enough to join us in two weeks time for the annual Camellia festival?" he asked, a soft smile on his face. It almost looked gentle and serene, as if he weren't quite in the present.
“Oh, I forgot that was around the corner! I need to fulfill the orders for the bizarre booths, too," Aila finally spoke, apparently brought back to the present. She grabbed a blank piece of paper and began writing down the things she would need. At least it looked like that to Amaryllis. Once she was done, she muttered a quick apology before clearing her throat. “I think dinner would be lovely," she finally answered, any trace of her previous embarrassment, gone.
“Oh, and if you wouldn't mind checking up on Zeke..." she trailed, glancing towards Dr. Calloway. “He really is stubborn, but he might need a professional opinion on whether or not he really is well enough to go back to work," she stated, causing Amaryllis to nod her head in agreement. Zeke had taken off two weeks in order to recover, but when she'd seen him the other day, he still looked slightly miserable. There were bags beneath his eyes, his complexion was off, and she thought she'd seen him hack up something black. It might have been her imagination, but Amaryllis was worried about her boss, as well.
“I find the best way to ask him about his condition is to be as indirect as possible. Zeke's always been the type to not like when others are worried or concerned about him," she added. He claimed it made him uncomfortable, but Amaryllis knew enough that he just didn't like to be bothered. While she was one to respect another person's wishes, and to know if they were well, Zeke always had a way of making Amaryllis and Ai worry about him. Years of being friends with people had a tendency to do that, she supposed.
But... There was no need for any of them to know of that. It will still be as usual. "That sounds fun." He then looked at Athanasios and Selene. "The three of us will join you." He then looked back at Aila who noted about bizarre booths and then she finally agreed about having dinner with them. "I am glad to hear that."
The conversation shifted towards Ezekiel. He did say that he would be checking up on the sheriff. It seemed that his leave of absence was due to health problems. He had been informed by that with his initial reconnaissance. He just didn't know what is the exact cause of it though. "Of course." He then looked at Amaryllis. Her point was valid as he observed the man to be hesitant. "I understand." He then looked at Athanasios and Selene again. It seemed they would be going on their separate ways for the meantime. He would be heading to the clinic to check on things since he would be opening it tomorrow. "Arthur, I'll be going to the clinic for a while after that I'll visit the station. I'll leave the orders and Celly to you for now." He patted Selene's head. "Don't leave, Arthur's side."
He looked back at Aila, Amaryllis, and Adrien. "I'll take my leave now. I'll be seeing you later this evening for dinner then." He gave them a kind smile then took one last look at Athanasios and Selene before he made his way to the door.
That expectant look made Athanasios decide to place a kiss on Selene's cheek. "Good job." The affection that is shown made her blush as she covered her face. It was not odd since the two are engaged to be married. Furthermore, it has been established by the couple that they are not overly-conscious about such actions in front of others. Then, there was a talk about a festival in two weeks. That sounds interesting. It would certainly give this town a paint of something exciting. She then looked back at Vicentius and Athanasios. It seemed they were invited. There was no reason to not go really. But, she can never be sure with their esteemed coven leader.
It seemed they will be joining from the looks of it. Selene simply nodded happily at Vicentius' response. Athanasios, on the other hand, has not much of a response as usual. He has no issues whether they go or not. If it was a festival, there would be a lot of people there. They could gather more information at such an event. But, that is a decision that Vicentius should make not him. For now, he was more concerned with the orders. It was at that point which Athanasios' attention was taken. Selene and he would be left on their own since the coven leader was going to do things on his own. That was not an issue with them really. They are a coven but they mostly move at their own leisure. They maybe cohesive from the outside but they are not synchronized as one would think.
Selene looked at Athanasios and then back at Vicentius with a smile. "I'll stay with Arthur. Come back home quickly, okay?" She played her card as an adorable sister. Truthfully, she did not want him to come back home at all. It would be best also if the dog also leaves her alone. That way she can have all the fun in the world. Although, she could still do that. She waved her brother goodbye. "Arthur, can we go shopping for dinner?" She looked at him with eyes glistening like a puppy. He looked at her and he couldn't refuse. After all, he dotes on her just like Vicentius. "Sure." The only problem is... he is not sure where to buy. Vicentius handles that part. "Where is the grocer?" He asked the others. Asking should help.
“The local grocery store is approximately two miles from here. If you wish, I can escort you there," he replied, earning a slight chuckle from Amaryllis. He tilted his head in her direction, his brows slightly furrowed. She always chuckled at his manner of speech, and she always teased him about it. There was nothing wrong, he didn't think, speaking the way he did, but he knew it was a little outdated.
“What he means to say is that he can show you the way if you want. It's about a fifteen minute walk if you're not driving, and probably about five minutes if you are. All you have to do is take a left as soon as you leave the store," she explained. Adrien nodded his head as he listened to her explanation. That made a bit of a difference, in his opinion.
“Anyway," she began, turning her attention to Aila, who was writing something down. “I have to get going, soon, Ai. My shift is about to begin, but I'll be able to meet for dinner as soon as I'm done. I was lucky enough to draw the short shift, today," she finished. Aila glanced up from her paper, and smiled at Amaryllis.
“Sure thing, Ama. Have a safe shift," she spoke, waving Amaryllis goodbye as she left after Dr. Calloway. “Oh," she stated suddenly. “What time should we meet you at the manor? I know people have different times they consider to be dinner, but I just want to make sure we arrive on time," she asked Arthur and Celeste. It was a valid point, he supposed. He knew Aila liked being punctual, especially if it was to a place she'd been invited to.
