Silence: A Forgotten Place

Along the Yonsetsu rail line there is a station that is overgrown with only a single track. The path from it leads to a small village that seems almost abandoned, yet the people who are there are a very friendly bunch.

Introduction

On the small Yonsetsu rail line there is a seemingly unused station the train stops at a couple times a day. No one knows why it stops there because there is no village visible from it nor do any people board the train from there too often. The station itself is overgrown and tall grass peeks out from the track. Yet if you follow a path from the station, you arrive at a village with old run down building. Absolutely quiet at first, it seems people still live there. The village of Ginotsu is small with only about two hundred inhabitants with only 60 living in its main part. Surprisingly it has a school with two or three dozen students. The people in the village are very friendly and it seems almost like paradise. Yet each villager has something strange about them. Some seem to watch you, others seem to stalk you and some wont leave you alone. They seem too friendly as if they are afraid you will leave them and never return. Best you just be careful.

Ginotsu village: A population of 200 but only 60 in the main part of the village, Ginotsu has a small secondary school with two or three dozen students, a nearly abandoned train station, a local conbini (convenience store), a grocery store, a village cafe, a village bar, a single paved road with a single bus stop, seemingly outdated roadside vending machines, a shrine, a guesthouse, a bath house, a community center, a doctors office, a small police station and a small post office.

What to expect:

The people: The Ginotsu villagers are very friendly, probably even in a creepy way. They are open to make friends and seem to have a hard time letting people leave the village if they aren't from a neighboring village. Some watch you, some stalk you and some will even follow you if you go to the next town. They enjoy your company, but you sometimes wont enjoy theirs. The villagers are generally a bit weird and it feels like they don't want to be forgotten. However it is not like the village is mostly made up of old people abandoned by their family, rather the villagers are quite young on average with only a smaller older population as if the children have no desire to find employment in the city. Children usually stay at home until they are five and then visit primary school in the neighboring village. After that they go to the villages secondary school (which simply has a wear school type uniforms policy without any specification of what type). Some go to the university afterwards but eventually come back.

Why you might come to Ginotsu: You might have found a peaceful place to live and may have found the village by coincidence. You may want to have a peaceful vacation. You are adventurous and found the village. You may be a resident of a neighboring village. You may have wanted to find out why the train always stops at an empty station. Or you may have someone dear to you from the village. There are many possibilities, even ones not listed.

Notes: This is not a psycho thriller or a horror and definitely not Higurashi. No killing. Please refrain from yandere type characters. The villagers are dependent and not crazy.

It was morning and it was quiet as usual. Only a slight ruckus from a distant train could be heard. Kyoko had woken up. Another day alone in the large guesthouse. Beds had just been changed as she did every week. Before heading to the shower, she went over to the plants in the indoor courtyard to give them some water. She had a couple flowers and a bonsai tree there. After she showered, she temporarily put on a yukata and went to go make breakfast. It was mayo onigiri and fried egg. She had her breakfast and some black tea, then went to put on clothes, rather normal clothes as she was going to be outside a bit. So she put on a long-sleeved high collar shirt, a bordeaux red zip-up hoodie, a short black pleated skirt, black thighhighs and some sneakers.

She first stopped by the cafe to have a coffee and chat a little with whoever was there.

"Another day...another mystery to be solved..." Hayakawa spoke as he took a sip from his bottle of water. It was an uneventful morning for him, he got up and got dressed in his usual T-shirt and pants along with his flat cap, made some instant noddles for his quick and easy breakfast before heading out into town. He had planned to just go into town for today, buy some food for his next dinner and maybe browse what new games were out. But his plans soon changed when he passed that one strange rail line, the Yonsetsu rail line. He had been on that train a couple of times and those few times he rode that train it would always stop at a seemingly abandoned station along the way, it had interested him ever since he had seen it but never had the free time to investigate to his hearts content, but now he had all the free time in the world.

"It cant hurt to check out the station, the worst that can happen is for me to wait by the station until the train returns...Oh the games can wait for an hour, there is something about that station waiting to be solved!" Hayakawa spoke enthusiastically as he made his way over to the train station just in time to see the train running the line make a stop.

Boarding the train he took a seat in the relatively empty compartment and made himself conferrable in the empty seats. He then pulled out his phone and opened up a game to pass the time with, it would not be a long journey but as he could at least have some fun while he waited.

In the cafe, there were a couple villagers gathered, chatting about. "Ah! Kyoko, how are you doing? A bit of a chilly morning isn't it?" One man said. Kyoko then replied: "Surely it is. I am hoping to get at least one guest today. It has been slow lately. Probably a week since the last guest and it was a regular who stays for the night before taking the bus to the next village where his home is. Fridays are usually the peak times since people stay late in town to drink with colleagues and end up taking the last train home but miss the last bus."

Kyoko ordered a coffee with a shot of caramel sirup and a shot of shochu. Enough to warm her up but barely any to make her drunk.

The train proceeded in silence with only the sounds of the wheels of the train hitting the track. As Hayakawa looked around, he noticed that there were a small handful of people in the cabin, not even a baby was there and that was surprising since no matter where any person goes he would hear the cry's of a baby whether it be at a beach or even a restaurant. Most of the people on the train were just people who looked to be about his age or older.

After surveying the people around the train, Hayakawa returned to his phone to continue playing games but it was immediately interrupted by the train slowing down and stopped at one of the stops to its destination. He looked up and looked outside his window and noticed the train had stopped at a seemingly abandoned station. Hawakawa turned off his phone and stood up from his seat, moving over to the trains exit and stepping onto the platform. As he left the train the doors closed behind him before continuing on its journey to where it was supposed to be going next.

Hayakawa looked around to see trees and vast wilderness, but he could now see any traces of civilization or any tourist attractions. "Time to look around for some secrets." Hayakawa spoke as he began to examine the nearby trees for anything. It took him a few minutes, but he eventually moved a shrub to the side and noticed a stone path behind it. "Well...well...well...Maybe there might be something here after all, might as well follow this path, should waste enough time for the train to return in..." He then glanced at his watched. "Two hours, enough time to look around." He finally stepped through the shrub and began to follow the stone path.

Kyoko had had enough coffee and proceeded to a walk as she had plenty of time to waste today. It was a bit warmer than before but she would expect it to not get warmer than a mid spring day or room temperature. She walked for a bit around the village and bought a stick of dango at the local shop before deciding to head over to the train station to see if anyone would get off the train. Luckily the day was clear and she had a clear view of the surrounding mountains. Kyoko walked along road that lead to the station, which soon turned into a decrepid stone path. Suddenly she noticed a person along the path, someone new. It excited her, it could be a potential visitor to the village and someone who could stay at the guesthouse.

"Hello there!" She called out. "Are you coming to the village?"

Hayakawa was walking along a stone path when a feminine voice called out to him, greeting him and asking if he was coming to the village. He turned his attention to the voice and saw a woman standing there, he simply smiled and waved to the figure. "Oh, so there is a village in this area? I was just looking around the place but hearing that there is a village in the area I guess I am now going to the village." He responded politely. He was bad in social situations but simple things like this was no problem whatsoever. But it was interesting to know that there was a village around these parts, especially in an area that seemed hidden and was far away from any town.

After thinking for a second, Hayakawa scratched the back of his head when he realized that he had no idea where the village was. The path could have led to a fork in the road. "Um...sorry for asking this but could you point me to the village. I'm afraid I might get lost along the way in case there is a fork in the road or if following the path leads me to somewhere completely different." He chuckled a bit before waiting for the woman's response.

"So you are coming to the village? Well since I guess you were the only one who got off the train, just follow me. I live in Ginotsu and have a guesthouse there." Kyoko said. She started walking towards the village. "Let me introduce myself. I am Hanatarashi Kyoko, 24 and resident of the village of Ginotsu. It is a wonderful place despite the state of some buildings. Most of our houses are at least 80 years old though. About 200 people live in the village both young and old and about 60 in the core part of it. We even have a secondary school, however primary school students visit school in a neighboring village. I hope I am not talking too much or too fast." Kyoko said. She was just excited about him visiting. Finally she would make a new friend and not let him out of her sights. She didn't want to be alone, despite having the village.

Hayakawa followed the woman as she began to lead him to the village, on the way she began to introduce herself and talk about the village. "My name is Hayakawa Tashiro, 22 and lives in a small house a little ways off from the nearest town. And it sounds like your village is rather interesting, 200 people with both a primary and secondary school and there are neighbouring villages. It sounds like a quiet and peaceful place, and no, your not talking too fast, I am interested about this place but I can't say that about my house." He replied before laughing to himself. She seemed nice, and the idea of a village so far out here must have meant they were all almost like family there. "This sounds like a prefect place to spend my next two hours at." He thought to himself.

Soon they arrived in the village. The clear day really made the surroundings look more beautiful. The old buildings of the village were a rare sight for anyone who came from the city or a rural area not far from a city. The few people on the road greeted them with a friendly smile. Kyoko lead Tashiro to her guesthouse. "Why don't you come in for some tea?" Kyoko offered. The guesthouse was old and somewhat large, offering short term and long term rooms. It had a nostalgic feel to it. It seemed as if it was in the thirties, yet the rooms had TVs and the entire house had wifi. "You can stay if you like, too. Fares are inexpensive and rent is cheap. We in Ginotsu appreciate company." Kyoko said.

Upon arriving at the village, Tashiro looked at the old village in awe. Compared to the tall building and fancy designs, this village was much smaller and less fancy, however there were far less people walking around. As he continued to walk along, a few people on the road greeted them with a friendly smile and he gave them a friendly wave in return. It was different seeing people pay attention to others than viewing them as an obstacle when walking on the street.

Eventually Kyoko lead Tashiro to a guesthouse and offered him some tea. "Sure, thanks for the offer." He nodded his head and looked around the guesthouse feeling nostalgic. He soon took his place on an open seat and checked his phone noticing that he had reception, even a place this far out had access to the internet, the wonders of technology in this day and age was simply amazing. As he pocketed his phone again, Kyoko spoke up and told him he could stay here if he wanted to, the fares and rent were cheap and Ginotsu appreciated the company. "I will surely keep that it mind, a cheaper rent and being closer to a store saves a lot of trouble. Also the people here seem nice and friendly. I'm certain if I do decide to live here for awhile I would feel right a home." Tashiro spoke.

"That would be wonderful." Kyoko replied. "Here at the guesthouse we also have a private hot spring, free tea and I will always be around if you need anything and despite the size the village has a lot to offer. Vending machines and even a maid cafe for example. And even though the train station looks abandoned, it is not like it is completely unused. Next town is only half an hour by train and Tokyo is about three hours by train. So do you live with family or are you alone?"

¨I live alone for the most part. I still keep in contact with my family and occasionally have a friend or two meet up at my house so we can play some games together to pass the time. For the most part however I end up alone with no one but the trees to talk to, and the times when I do head into town I usually don't stay long, takes a few hours to make it to the closest town in order to buy food and a few hours to return home. Usually a single two way trip would take up half of my day, so I never really interact with people." Tashiro replied as he began to stretch. ¨Now, have anything to tell me about yourself? I'm sure a lovely lady like yourself has some interesting stories to share." He asked as he gave a small complement for the things she has done so far, she was nice to lovely was the right word, or was it a different word? Was the word he chose weird or correct? Whatever the case he had spoke his mind.

When Tashiro said "lovely", it was almost as if Kyoko had hearts in her eyes and a smile grew on her face. "Lovely you say? Awww, thank you. Well I have pretty much grown up in the village, my parents gave me this guesthouse as a basis for my income. I had studied for sometime at a small campus of a university in a nearby town and got a degree in tourism studies. Mostly I occasionally get a guest but most guests come Friday as many come home late after a night of drinking and miss the last bus. So mostly life is not that eventful for me." Kyoko said.

"There is even a university near here!? Man this village is just full of surprises. But as for an eventful life I can't say the same for mine. I decided it would be fun and cool to be a detective like my father, one short story and a bunch of close calls later I decided to resign and take it easy. But don't get me wrong, it was very fun and cool like I had always envisioned like a kid but a person has a limit to their luck and I was certain I was about to run out of it. Now I just relax at home most of the time and play video games most of the time." Tashiro spoke as he scratched the back of his head as he admitted to turning from a cool detective to a gamer. "Would you look at that, here I am spilling the detail about my life even though we were trained to act calmly and disclose as little information as we can. I guess games do have an effect on people." He soon laughed, he was the spitting image of a detective and here he was acting like a fool in front of this woman. Maybe it was because he was getting a little bit nervous talking to her, or maybe he was just bad at talking to women.

"Well yes there is a small university campus just half an hour down the train line. But you say you were a detective? How interesting. We haven't really had any crimes here. One time a bank robber sought refuge in the guesthouse. Luckily, I am a part time police assistant and brought him to justice. I could be seen as a type of sheriff in this quiet village but it is really just a volunteer position because someone has to do it, if something really comes up." Kyoko said. "How about I make you another tea?" Kyoko then went to make another tea. This guy was wonderful and Kyoko as a lonely single thought it was a great coincidence. She dumped a powder, a sedative, into his cup, away from his view. Of course, she wouldn't do anything too sketchy. She just wanted him to fall asleep, muse about him and have him miss the last train, either forcing him to spend the night or getting the opportunity to drive him home, so that she would know where he lives.

"A bank robber? I think I read something like that it the news a little while ago. Interesting read, the guy managed to escape the entire city while the entire police force scoured the city for him. I myself was looking for how he managed to do that but in the end all I found out was that he managed to escape using through an old sewer system and hopped on a train. Looks like you were the one that caught him and I myself am surprised you knew he was a bank robber, all we had on him was a physical description since he covered every feature of his body." Tashiro chuckled as he accepted the second tea, talking really does make a person parched.

As he downed the whole tea in a matter of seconds he placed the tea down before continuing. "Thanks for the tea again. But as I was saying, when the bank robber entered the station in cuffs you should have seen the look on everyone's faces. They were all surprised to see that illusive robber had been caught, heck I had to rub my eyes for...a while." He then gave a big yawn and rubbed his eyes. He was starting to feel a little sleepy, maybe it was from all the talking or all the tea he drank but whatever it was he placed his head on the counter and yawned again. "I think...I'm going to take a little..." He then fell asleep on the counter as the sedative kicked in.

Kyoko watched as Tashiro fell asleep. She put a blanket over him and started to watch him, embracing him on occasion (*cough* creepy *cough*). In the next couple of hours, she changed to a layered kimono and tabi socks, did her hair and began making a room ready for him. She made the bed and laid out a yukata for him. After preparing the room, she set up the bar, putting various kinds of sakes and shochus out as well as juices they could mix with the shochu. She then sat down and waited for Tashiro to wake back up. It was about time the last train had left, pretty much stranding Tashiro in the village with Kyoko.

"Come on guys...you know I hate....spicy foods..." Tashiro mumbled in his sleep before slowly waking up from his dream. It appeared that his small nap had turned into a full sleep but he did not go to bed to sleep, he then looked to what he was sleeping on it turned out he was still sitting down with his head on the counter along with a blanket covering him. He slowly sat back up and searched his pocket for his phone before peering at the time, midnight, the time when the trains were going to stop for the night.

He slowly sighed as he pocketed his phone before looking around, immediately he noticed Kyoko sitting down in the room. "I guess I have you to thank for the blanket, sorry for snoozing off like that, it must have been awkward to people to walk in and see a man asleep on the counter." He nervously laughed before continuing. "Well...looks like I won't be heading home for the night, looks like I am going to take up your offer for staying here for the night...how much is a room exactly?"

"I am so sorry you missed the train. Well the night is usually 3000 yen (like 30 dollars) but I will offer you a room for only 2000 yen. Plus if you like, I have set out some sake and shochu if you want a drink. I got various local drinks to offer. I recommend black tea with shochu and it is my favorite." Kyoko said and smiled cutely. Despite having drugged him just hours before, she didn't think much of it as she was enjoying his company right now. "Are you just retired or have you found a different, more peaceful occupation? Because you seem a bit young to retire fully."

"I appreciate the generous offer, I will make it up to you somehow." Tashiro smiled as the woman offered him a cheaper room which he was thankful for not only for her kindness, but also because he did not have his wallet on him so he could not afford the usual 3000 yen price. When Kyoko offered him a drink he was unsure whether or not he should partake in a drink, he had a tendency to try to prove to parties that he could out drink them all. Safe to say hangovers are not fun and he decided to only have just a few cups. "Just a cup of sake, and as for if I retired or not...I honestly did retire at a young age, I hope to find another job but so far not much luck. Of course my earnings as a detective are not going away for awhile which is the only thing preventing me from taking the more strange and weird jobs." He laughed as he reached into his pocket and basically handed her all of his money on his self. But now there was a new problem, how was he supposed to get on the train with no money?

Kyoko then filled a cup with a local sake. "This is very fine sake from the village. It is of Honjozo type. The taste should be mild but good." Kyoko said as she handed him the cup of warm sake. "So if you don't have a job, why don't you come get one in the village? There is bound to be someone who has a job for you. Otherwise you can see if the police need someone in full time to manage the police box in the village. The good part of it would be that it would be less stressful than in other places." Kyoko said as she received the money from Tashiro.

Tashiro took the cup of warm sake and took a sip from it. "Huh...I guess I solved the problem of finding a job then, I would gladly take a look around the village and check for any opening but when morning comes I should head back. Not because I don't want to stay here, I kinda forgot my wallet and cant pay for another room...wait...now how am I supposed to take the train home?" He suddenly scratched the back of head and gave a nervous laugh. It appeared that Tashiro was thinking of living in some box in the village and work until he earned enough money to pay for a train ticket, the one day he forgot his wallet.

"Oh you are out of money? I am sorry. Should I drive you home in the morning? I got a car you know." Kyoko said. It sort of felt like backstabbing having him pay for a room and then offering to drive him home after him using all his money for the room. Kyoko sort of felt bad about that. "Are you enjoying your sake?" Kyoko asked Tashiro with a smile. Even though putting knockout powder in his tea earlier was sort of an act of a crazy person, it didn't bug Kyoko much and Tashiro didn't need to know about that.

"Oh, that's very polite to offer to drive me home...I accept, but at least let me give you something in return. I will do any task you want as long as it doesn't past the boundaries of the law. I promise I will make it happen in return for all the kindness you have shown me...and yeah, the sake is really good and not making me tipsy." Tashiro laughed shaking away his sorta awkward response. By now his cheeks were now slowly turning red not from the sake but from sheer embarrassment.
