Personality Description:
Sollas craves for knowledge be it through books or experimenting with old technology, from before the glitch. He enjoy listening to music whenever the sun gives him the opportunity to power an old FLAC-player he found on one of his scavenging runs. This leads to his undying love for the sun. Sollas normally appear as calm and relaxed, which is a very uncommon feature these days. This affects other people in his presence and most people in the city enjoy his company.
You should not judge a book on its cover. That goes for Sollas as well. If there is one person that feels stressful, it is he. He believe that the faster he can learn to use the old technology, the less people from the camp will suffer. This is what runs his hunger for knowledge.
Sollas is very skillful in the field of electronic, communication and quantum engineering, to the extent that people call him a genius. He does indeed have a certain talent. Calling him a genius would be to go too far. He does use most of his time learning more and more to aid the camp he live in and of course to upgrade his beloved constructions.
With his knowledge of technology, Sollas uses all his remaining resources on constructing valuable technology for the village. Be it more power efficient ways of heating water or food, light sources, small alarms etc. One thing is certain he has had a project since he started learning about robot technology: LuCiaN. She is his pride and joy, and he feels a responsibility for her wellbeing. He believes it might be the same feeling as a father for his child.
To him robots are equal to humans. If it hadn’t been for the robots that was still doing their work around the cities, humanity would have been extinct a long time ago. At least that is what he believe. Because of that, he treat robots and humans alike
Sollas is known for being rather overprotective of people. This is driven by his fear of being alone. He will not tolerate people doing stuff with too high risks and he often gets his will because of his influence on the camp. This often make people mad at him but in the end, they know he wants the best for them. Sollas is not a strong person when it comes to defend against the glitch. With his logic mind however, he often finds a way to get out of a pinch alive.
Whenever Sollas is in need of parts for experiments or for construction, he go out and scavenge. He’ll most likely invite a person or two to join him. Mostly just for the company, but its always good to go in small groups when outside the camp. With his knowledge of the old days (read through books) he is able to easily scavenge usable things. Having him on a scavenging team result in fast missions with low risks contra the reward.
History
Sollas was born in the year 4003. He was born as part of the 3rd generation after the glitch. Living inside the camp his mother have been living in since she was born. His father was an outsider, a so-called solo runner. A man that scavenged deadly parts of cities and sold whatever he was not in need of, to camps much like the one Sollas live in. He never got to know his father. The only thing he know of his father is the stories his mother told him, when he was a boy.
At the age of five Sollas’s mother went on a mission to retrieve a bunch of different objects from some rather dangerous parts of the largest city in the area. She was not alone of course. This was a very dangerous mission and the camp were in dire need of the things as winter were coming and problems had started to arrive with the houses. It took a long time before they got word of the expedition that went out. Too few mouths spoke the word as well. Only three out of the eight had come back alive. Sollas was devastated, had it not been for Hagen, the camps technician, Sollas would probably have ended up dead.
Hagen gave Sollas a purpose. He took him in as his pupil and taught him about the fundamentals of technology as he start creating different machines needed for the winter. The survivors had managed to retrieve the most needed items, because of the sacrifice of their comrades. Those items were what Hagen were building out of. It somehow calmed Sollas’s mind that his mother’s last efforts did not go to waste.
Hagen was like a father to Sollas and he saw great potential in his little pupil. He used all his time on raising and schooling the boy.
If there was one thing that fascinated Sollas, it was the creation of life. At the age of eight, he started using his spare time to read up on different engineering subjects to create a robot. Only a year later he started on his biggest project LuCiaN. However, the creation of a robot with a fully functional A.I. is not child’s play, and Sollas was excessively young at the given time to create something that worked. “Where there is a will, there is a way” as he said however, and he never gave up on the project.
Time takes it toll. When Sollas turned thirteen Hagen died. He was an old man and it didn’t come as a surprise. Sollas was somewhat happy that his stepfather had been given a peaceful death. Sollas was the one to take over for Hagen. At that point in time, even though he was young and inexperienced he somehow managed to fill out the work of the old technician.
Years went by with profit as well as losses. At the age of sixteen Sollas managed to make LuCiaN fully functional. Though still with faults here and there in the program and a little problem with a hardware part or two LuCiaN was born. It was hard for Sollas to believe that he had created a living being. Just like the ones that walked around camp and in the city. Yet this one was different, very different.
Years went on without much happening. Sollas made LuCiaN attend weekly maintenance. He was going for perfection, with the dream of giving LuCiaN a good life as fuel. Nevertheless, it was rough; creating life is not something that a mind can comprehend without some form of strain. For Sollas it was the hunger for perfection that led to stress and to many sleepless nights.
Relationship
► Madeline Jule
”I like her attitude, she has her heart in the right place. The thing I don't like is her way towards others. I do understand that with the time we live in, it is hard to trust others but still… I have this feeling that she needs protection. I should start talking a little bit more with her; I think that would do us both good. She might even be able to teach me a thing or two. After all, I believe she’s seen her share of this insane world we live in.”
► Ren Young Ming
”” [WIP, waiting for the history of the character]
► LuCiaN
”She is my creation, and the closest thing I have to a family. I know I can always rely on her, as she can rely on me. Others might think it is a weird relationship to have with what they call a machine. However, I know that she is much more than a machine. She isn’t done yet; I need a little more time to make her perfect. In time, they will all see.”
