Back-story:
Lionel was born in Elden during a time of prosperity and peace. His father was a well-renowned and honored member of a guild during that time, known for his amazing feats and his skill with the sword. Lionel would often visit his father at the guild hall where he met all the other members who were his father's friends. Lionel became really popular there, always taken care of and taught many things during his stays. Since he was young, his father taught him the ways of the sword; how to wield it properly, when and when not to use it.
One day, when Lionel was but 11 years old, his father had just come back from a certain mission that he chose to keep secret from his family. However, Lionel knew something was wrong. His father had a look of disgust on his face as if he had just smelled something unsavory. As curious as he was, Lionel chose not to delve any deeper. However, it was right after that that his father ended his swordsmanship lessons with Lionel, telling Lionel to study instead and become a scholar. This was something Lionel could not agree with. Fighting was in his blood and there was no one better to learn from than from his father. It wasn't until a little later that Lionel found out the cause of all the irregular behavior.
Lionel's father had been sent on an assassination mission. The leader of a rising rebel faction within the city limits was the target. Their mission was to assassinate him, hoping the rebellion would quell after their leader had gone. However, civilians became involved, and that's where the mission went awry. Lionel's father, during the course of the raging battles, had struck down women and children in order to accomplish the mission. He slaughtered them left and right without a moment's hesitation. It was not until after the dust had settled did he realize what had happened.
Lionel began to understand his father's feelings and emotions. However, this did nothing to stop him from reconsidering his future path. He chose to train in secret, learning from the other swordsman in his father's guild. Slowly but surely, his skill in the sword was exceeding that of his father's. As much as his father had done to keep Lionel from following the path of the sword, Lionel disregarded all of it in order to maintain his family's name and his father's honor. What effect his father's horrible deed had on Lionel is yet to manifest.
