The Kingdom of Avalonia

Play as human king, dwarven merchant or dragon rogue in a fantastic medieval land, Avalonia.

Introduction

It is the year 340 A.C.. The whole world as we know it seems to collapse, for science has discovered a new power on Earth, a power that flows through humans like it does through the ground... a power able to create as well as to kill, a power against which even the hardest armor seems to be powerless, a power that seems like the Gods itselves use it... a power named Magic. It has been present since ever, but it is only today that we know it exists - and start to use it.
200 years later, in the year 540 A.C., magic is an uncommon force which can be used by people who undergo a special training. Although only few can use it, most know about it. Some beings have always known that this force exists among us, the elves and dragons, which live in unison with nature. But now that humans also are aware of its existence, and can use it as well, what will happen to the world?
The art of practising magic has allowed many craftsmen and smithes to forge a new kind of items, known as magitechnological items. Weapons, armor, magical rings, even buildings and everyday-use items such as chairs and tables were crafted or enforced with magical power, making them more resistant to damage, or better. The dragons and elves which had lived with magical power since ever as far as they could remember, did not appreciate this excessive and abusive use of magic, but they did not interfere since they beleived that humans should learn to use that power by themselves.
Dwarves, the only other race that had not known about magic until then aside of humans, also picked up the human's discoveries, and started to use them for its own benefits. They were the best magitechnology crafters, but there were few mages among them.
At the present day, humans, elves, dragons and dwarves continue to co-exist peacefully, although they are mostly separated from each other. The dragons and elves inhabit the forests, the humans cities and villages, and dwarves stay in their underground caverns and mines. There are often hostilities in-between the rqaces though, such as when humans cut down trees from a forest, or when dragons appear near human settlements due to migrations. The dwarves were the only ones to have good relations with all races save the dragons, as they dislike beings that can fly, whie dragons don't like beings that hide underground. There are no hostilities though.
In this world, the land of Avalonia is the only country where all races are in, and it is also the most advanced in terms of magic and magitechnological use. Avalonia is a kingdom ruled by a human king, although elves and dwarves also have their own monarchs, and the dragons have an Elder Dragon which is their leader. Due to the presence of powerful magitechnology in the country Avalonia has little to fear from other countries, but there are occasional attacks of rebels against the king of humans, bandits which attack merchants and travelers, and Monsters that lurk around everywhere and attack who- and whatever crosses their path.

The kingdom generally has no greater threats, although I may choose to create one or two from time to time, such as Monster attacks. You can occupy any of the free spots, or be a character which you create.

Races:

Humans: physically relatively weak in comparison to most other races, humans make up for their lack of natural force with the creation of powerful and effective magitechnology, which they are best at creating and using of all. They outnumber all other races on Avalonia as well, save the Monsters if they are not divided into classes. Their main living places are the big cities and villages, which they have built themselves, although many humans are also scattered throughout Avalonia. They are ruled by a King and a Queen.

Elves: they look much like humans, but have slightly more pale skin, don't grow any beards, and have pointy ears which distinguish them from humans. They are physically very fast and strong, and can also use magic, but they deny the use of all magitechnology. They have the third biggest population of Avalonia, and are ruled by a King and a Queen. Their main living spaces are the forests of Avalonia, which are too big for the humans to explore.

Dwarves: They live underground in nearly all cases, and are roughly half as big as an average human. They also are more musculous, and have more hair growing in their faces, which explains the beards that most of them have - including women. Being slower, but much stronger than humans and even elves, they are great smithes and miners. They use magitechnology and magic as well, but with little skill. They excel at smithing magitechnological weapons and armor though. Many dwarves are also merchants, which trade with humans and elves. They are ruled by a King and a Queen.

Dragons: The rarest race on Avalonia, dragons populate the mountains, forests and isolated places of the country, avoiding contact with humans, dwarves and Monsters. They are good friends with the elves though. Most dragons can fly, but there are also many that can swim, and even breathe underwater like fishes. Their use of magic is unrivalled even by the elves, as they have much more magic in their bodies, but they have difficulty in using it precisely. Their most current spell is the elemental breath. Dragons are ruled by Elder Dragons, which command large groups.

Monsters: They exist on Avalonia like animals, but are more dangerous since they are aggressive against all other life forms. Nearly all of them fear the dragons, though. Monsters can be classified into Gnomes, Wyverns, Orcs, Undead, Demons, Mutated Animals, and various others, and they all have different systems of hierarchies, depending on their intelligence. For example, orcs are ruled by Village Leaders, which are basically small kings. If all Monsters are summed up without taking them apart as a result of classifying, they are even more than humans. Many can use magic and/or have weapons other than their bodies, but only the more intelligent ones. Demons are considered the most dangerous race, followed by Wyverns (dragonkind flying Monsters).

The following are available for each race, save for Dragons, and Monsters for which there can be exceptions (orcs can be, Wyverns not, for example)

-Western Island (an island in the west of the kingdom, somewhere in Lake Avalonia. As opposed to Eastern Island it is avoided by most beings, including Monsters, because it is inhabited by incredibly powerful demons and dragons, which coexist on the island. There are many caverns underground of the lake, which can be accessed from the island)
-Cavern Maze (accessible through Western Island. It is rarely visited by any beings, and reaches deep underground. Noone knows what is in there)
-Zegoran ( Also called "the kingdom of darkness", it is called the emboidement of suffering, risk vs reward, eternal striving for things, and most things that the other races would deem either immoral or corrupt. Only Western Island is more avoided than this region)

-Somewhere in Avalonia, near Korona city in a big village-

The crowd, more than 50 people, was going wild as Kansa the Juggler threw his two blades into the air, making them flip multiple times, without losing a single of the eight balls he was juggling with his left. He was one of the best on the world, there was no doubt to it. Shira smiled as he watched him from a distance behind the scenes.
"NOW!" shouted Kansa as he caught the first blade with his right hand, and let the other land on it so that its tip was on the other blade's flat side, and he held it in perfect balance for some seconds before sheathing it by throwing it into the air and letting it fall into its sheath. Then he took the bucket that had been behind him, and let the eight balls fall into. The crowd cheered as he bowed to them, and left. "Your turn," he whispered to Shira as he came by him and Eclipse. "I know," answered Shira. His part was the last one as usually, as his performance was more impressive in the dim light of the evening.
"And now, ladies and gentlemen, let us see the last but not the least of our program's part... Shira the dancer and Eclipse the Dragon! Applause!" shouted Andes, the oldest performer who acted as the host for the presentation as he was too old to perform himself. Shira and Eclipse looked at each other, nodded, and went on the stage. Bowing a few times, they waited until the crowd had calmed down enough so Shira could talk. Andes went to the edge of the stage, and waited.
"Thank you, everyone. We are glad to perform for such good fans of us, and hope that you will enjoy. We recommend that you keep your distance from the stage though, as pieces of fire may rain down, and as far as we know it is unpleasant to be set ablaze." Some laughter.
"Let us begin," whispered Shira, more to himself and Eclipse than to anyone else, as he opened the pouches on his belt, closed his eyes, and took some of the magical powder into his hands. "GO!" He threw the powders up and started his dance. The crowd was cheering, but they would soon stop. His and Elcipse's dance had never failed to drag its spectators into an illusionary, fantastic world, to the poiunt that they would not even realize it if they fell to the ground. As Eclipse started her flight the cheerings were already dying out, and Shira's magic was filling the air.

Yen sat on her large black throne; she was fully dressed in battle armor and even had the helmet on. The doors to her throne room were kicked open by two of her elite guards who dragged in a sniveling, crying, screaming, and kicking female elf who yelled about her daughter and son. They threw her down and she skidded on the marble floor until she stopped at the first step of the 25 steps that lead to her throne. Yen looked down with a malicious grin behind her mask and said in a sadistic and intrigued voice โ€œWhy hello there, wasnโ€™t long for my guards to find you now was it? I blame your big blabbering mouth but then again thatโ€™s how you got here in the first placeโ€ฆ.โ€ She began walking down the step with a heavy thud on each step that echoed in the lavishly designed chamber. With each thud the women cringed in fear but stood there lying on the floor not daring to look up. Yen extended her arm and delicately and cleanly wrapped her hand around her chin starting with the pinky to the thumb. Her suits claws leaving slight cuts on her cheek and the metal was ice cold. Yen tilted the womanโ€™s head up to her helmet and tilted her head sideways as if confused. The elf soon took this opportunity and said as quickly as possible โ€œI am so sorry my queen I swear that I will never attempt treason on our glorious kingdom ever againโ€ in which yen replied by squeezing her chin harder and harder and lifting it up till they were face to face. โ€œLetโ€™s see what the people thinkโ€ฆโ€ yen grabs her by the hand and brings her to a door on the side and opens it. Through the door is a balcony that looks out to the city center, a crowd of people has massed up to the center to watch the punishment. โ€œGreetings citizens of Zegoran, today I bring you a traitor to our fair country. You see this elf has decided to turn tail and try and sell some of our defense plans to Korona City. But do not fret for we have stomped this women out and have allowed you the people to decide her fate. Tell me what is it that you want!โ€ in which the crowd screamed โ€œBlood!โ€ and began hurling sharp stones, objects, and a glass bottle that shattered on her leg at the elf. Soon the elf was cut up badly and blood slowly poured from all her wounds. But the crowd wanted more so they continued chanting and Yen took her helmet off and let her hair fling back and forth in the air before looking at the elf with red eyes and opened her mouth. She moved the elf down and planted her lips around the elfโ€™s covering most of the elfโ€™s mouth and then sank in deep cutting through the flesh and pulled back like a rabid dog shaking her head violently as the blood from the mouth gushed forward like a fountain of blood and her bones could be seen. Yen then raised her blade and slit the elfโ€™s jugular vein and threw her into the crowd to let them do their worst.

As she walked back into her throne she licked her lips and wiped away the blood from her mouth area. One of her guards approached her and told her โ€œMy liege, an appointment for treaties with the dwarfs has opened. Your advisers have suggested you go there personally for honor reasons and for an advantage in the treaty. From our research the King dwarf seems to be a great fan of royal ladies, and you would fit that role greatly. โ€œAt the end Yen gave a coy smirk and then a little smile before walking to another door into her armory and picking out a armor that offered little protection. It was a more feminine version of her usual battle armor thatโ€™s chest plate was nothing but a bra with (lots of cleavage and) metal on the sides connecting to the thong. The gloves were not as heavily armored and some even revealed her nails and fingers while the helmet remained the same but allowed her hair to fall out instead of have to be bunched up and spiky. To tie it all up was a long cloak that had its collar all the way up like that of a clichรฉ villain. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ She told her guards as she put the armor on and made her way outside to mount a skeletal horse, rear it up, and storm out with around 7 of her royal guards (2 of them holding a flag that meant a peace mission) and about 15 crimson scar bezerkers (Scars who specialized in rampant frenzy attacks. They all had ceremonial armor that was exquisitely designed and incredibly bulky on the shoulder pads, chest, and pants. They all had the Zegoran flag that had a skeleton with a pike through its bum hole, straight through the middle of the rib cage, and through the mouth all while fire shoots out of its eyes).

Veridan Exor Valeus the third stormed through his citadel, enraged beyond all comprehension. The reason being that yet another city had fallen to a seemingly unstoppable army of Orcs. Veridan hated Orcs above all other of the viles creatures. This was because they had brutally murdered his father, and indirectly caused the deaths of all of his family. But, for the moment, Veridan's fury was focused elsewhere. On other days he would have gone into battle himself and started hewing orc heads from their bodies with great delight. The only reason he didn't was because he had to deal with the Commander of the fallen city of Kal-Thrall, the still apparently breathing and cowardly dwarf named Fivo Dasno.

Turning another corner, Veridan entered through a vast doorway into the great Throne room. At first there was a great chattering as the nobles talked amongst themselves, but as they notcied him, they fell silent. With solemn faces they parted before him as he strode forward. They all knew what the King was there for, and all feared that his wrath would extend to others. Quite rightly so. Several of the nobles that moved away from him were the subordinates of Fivo, and they had fled the city under his orders. Each and every one of them tried to hide their faces, hoping that he would take no notice of them.

Veridan simply ignored them, much to their relief, at least for the moment. He walked up the twenty one high steps to his throne, hands clasped behind his back. His chainmail cloak rattled and jingled with each step. While some cosidered this a friend and comforting sound, those who were right to fear him shrunk from it. After walking the steps, Veridan took another stride and turned, mounting his throne. He stared at the assembled nobles before speaking.

"It grieves me to say that this will not be a happy occasion that we meet on today," he said in a steely voice. "It comes to my attention that one of you has failed in his duty, and left the innocent citizens of an entire city to the mercy of the Orc scum." As he spoke, he said the last word with every bit of distaste and hatred he could muster. Many of the people flinched at the word. "I call Fivo Dasno forward to face his judgement, along with his subordinates."

A few desperate cries rang out from the crowd as guards moved in and seized the ones in question, bringing them forward and making them kneel in full view. Veridan gazed on the, with a cold and menacing expression, his knuckles strained white as he balled his fists. So apparent was his fury that one of the woman nobles brought forward wet herself right there and then, and promptly fainted. Veridan watched this with not change to his demeanour.

He was about to speak when a small cry rang out from the crowd. A small messenger boy pushed his way to the front. He scampered out of reach of the guards an dmounted the steps, still managing to show respect as he did so. The boy reached the top and whispered in Veridan's ear the words he had been told were of most importance. Veridan frowned for a minute before speaking.

"It has come to my attention that Empress Uen Orian is approaching the gates with a mission of peace. This is a more pressing matter than the one at hand, so it will be postponed until such a time as I can come back to it. Take the condemned to the holding area for the time being... and could some please clean up that woman's refuse?" he stated.

The guards did as he asked and soon the throne room was cleared of both nobles and of womanly piss. Veridan kept the messenger boy and an honour guard of thirty trained Axe-men with him as he awaited the arriving Empress.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the King was quessing right, the Empress could be no farther away then in sight of the Gates of Kal-Greyi. These were the massive gates and assorted fortifications that led into the capital of the dwarves from the surface. It would be a menacing sight to some and a welcome sight to others. To dwarves it promised safety and rest. To those who came to conquer it spoke of their impending death. Hewn into the rock-face of a massive mountain, the gates were approximately fifty meters high. No one had dared to climb them and measure for a long time. The last who had done so had been swept off by the feirce winds that prevaded on the mountain at any height above ground level.
The gates were massive steel doors, a meter thick. They were shaped like a rectangle with its outer top corner cut off. The fitted into the stone tso well that yuou couldn't see a crack when they closed. Imposing and black, they were adorned with many carvings of ancient kings and their deeds. Around them a sprawling but orderly trading post had grown, as those who could not enter the city still wanted to trade. Currently the weather was frigid, and snow was falling.
The sun was just over the horizon โ€“ it wasnโ€™t dawn, but not all that long after, either. Lemon-yellow light flickered over the many walls and soaring towers of Korona city, the greatest of them all and the royal capital of Avalonia. It danced off the pennons โ€“ purple and gold โ€“ snapping in the brisk breeze of early autumn and sparkled in the fountain-jets from the parks and the grounds of Castle Korona, lighting the ever-busy streets โ€“ while it was often said that Castle Korona never sleeps, the same was equally true of its city โ€“ from the eternal bustle of the trading caravanserais that ringed it to the marketplaces that never stopped, only the nature of the goods beneath the brilliantly-coloured awnings changing with the hours.
The tidal beat of the hammers in the League of Iron was ceaseless, too, along with the superheated air and choking palls of black โ€“ and sometimes interestingly rainbowed โ€“ smoke that lay over the district, the province of inventors and blacksmiths and thaumaturgists of all shades of legality.
In fact, the only district that really had any semblance of quiet was the noblesโ€™ quarter with its substantial mansions and turreted palaces that stood, smugly self-satisfied constructions of white stone and tile, amid luxuriant grounds watched over by alert noble House Guards. There, the only figures moving on the flagstones and across the ornamental squares were servants and delivery boys, along with a few patrols of Royal Guards, their armour buffed to a mirror-shine.
The Royal Concourse, the main entrance through the walls and to the sprawling complex that was Castle Korona โ€“ originally a grim castle, and still with that hard core but now subsumed under later, more fanciful buildings โ€“ was, of course, busy; the castle was the very nerve centre of the realm and a continual process; messengers from every corner of the kingdom converged on it, the kitchens and wine cellars needed supplying, the servants needed to be clothed and shod...the list of things was endless, and fortunately did not need the kingโ€™s direct supervision.
Theolian sighed and turned away from the broad windows of his study that looked out onto the teeming city. If he had to manage that sort of thing as well as the rest of the kingdom, he was sure heโ€™d go quite mad.
Even as it was, there was a towering pile of papers waiting for his attention. Doubtless thereโ€™d be something from each of the Dukes, reports on their provinces, and the collaborative or contradictory reports from his own little network. He trusted his nobles, but only to a point. There would also be entreaties from the major priests of the Fane โ€“ Koronaโ€™s temple district โ€“ about their feasts and holy days and probably asking for donations to the Repair the Temple Roof fund or something similar.
It never ended, a continual stream of paperwork. Speaking of, there came a sonorous knock at the double doors sandwiched between the ranks of bookshelves and the Canova bronzes and they swung open, letting in the black-and-white ghost of the Lord Chamberlain, his arms piled high with papers.
The man glided across the polished wood floor, expertly avoiding the rugs and ornaments that littered the place and swept a foreshortened bow to Theolian.
โ€œAllow me,โ€ Theolian said, gesturing with an elaborate pen. Purple light flared around a set of words for a moment and then the pile of reports burst into the air, swirling around one another and then halting, effortlessly held in space. โ€œNow, my lord dโ€™Valois, what have you brought me this time? And so early, for such a large stack.โ€
โ€œReports from the Royal Army, majesty, information on troop movements and resupply requests, information on the market taxes across the kingdom, the road survey and census reports, and information from our networks in the other kingdoms, Majesty. The Royal Spymaster asked me to draw your attention to the Zegoran report in particular, and there is an odd report of a dragon being seen in a village near Korona.โ€
Theolian made a face. โ€œZegoran? Oh, if one must. Let one see...that would be this one.โ€ A sheaf of parchments floated down into the kingโ€™s waiting hands and he began to read. โ€œAh,โ€ he said, when done, in a tone as mild as spring rain. โ€œWell, that is going to be something of an annoyance. It would have been nice to know something more of the Zegoran defences โ€“ dโ€™Valois, we require the Field-Marshal and his principal Generals for a strategy meeting at the Royal College of War as soon as it can be arranged. See to it that the appropriate personnel are notified. If one knows anything about Yen Orian, itโ€™s that we shall need to be on our guard.โ€
Yen and her platoon of soldiers rode on forward with Yens skeletal horse leading there Demon Fellhorses (With fire from their eyes and fire on their hooves). As they finally got to the Gates of Kal-Greyi she looked up at the foreboding walls before trotting forward and demanding the guards open the gate. There was a 3 minute hesitation but the gate keeper soon had the gate open. Looking forward she saw the Dwarf capital and lying far in the back was the dwarven capital castle. Moving forward some citizens fled in fear, others made protective symbols to whatever gods they worshiped, and others simply gave hateful glares (And then there are those who frantically drank hoping to forget the incident). They eventually made it to the castle and let the horses stand outside in the frigid cold. They did not move or flinch as the wind hit them; they simply stood solitary waiting for their masters to return. Occasionally snorting out some fire or shaking away a dwarf who tried to lead them to a manger or stall. Walking forward to the doors Yen was greeted by armored soldiers who encircled her team and began moving them inside the building and through several rooms before they stopped at a small room with a fire place, comfy chairs, some animal heads on the wall, and a locked door.
Veridan waited at his throne for another full minute before stading. His quests should be here by now. He slowly walked down the stone steps, collecting his hammer from its resting place on a pedestal as he went. One of the guards came to tell him that the quests were waiting in one of the suites, living rooms. Veridan scowled. Despite being a friendly minded being, he was already on edge from the earlier events, and he wasn't in the mood to be kept waiting. So, the King strutted down the halls and came to the room indicated. He walked in and sat down in one of the chairs across from Yen Orian. He waved a hand and Yen's guards along with his own were ushered out into the waiting room.
"So it seems that it has come time to renew our treaty," he said matter of factly. His eyes were locked on the woman's face, but he was taking in her beauty with considerable ease due to his peripheral vision. He had to admit, the leader of Zegoran was evil to the bone, but an alliance with her had been to his benefit, and she didn't look all that bad either. The thought brought a smile to Veridan's face, and he sat up a tad straighter.
"The only problem is that our contracts in the past have not always been beneficial to my people," he stated, putting a little edge in his voice to his his discomfort. "Just last month we asked for support in the defense of one of our cities. Your men did the job of defence well enough, but they menaced some of my citizens and even subtracted their own payment from them. This is a rather grave offence to some of the higher nobles, and they are pushing for a breaking of our alliance."
While was Veridan said was true, there had been other things no so pleasent that had gone on in the defense of that city. Not only had the twenty five warriors of Zegoran had ransacked several of the nobles houses that were in the city, and had even taken a couple of children hostage to ensure their safe passage. The children hadn't been seen or heard from since.
Panting a bit after the performance - using magic for such amounts of materials, for such a long time was not as easy as it looked - Shira returned to his wagon. They were done for today, it was time to go on.
Eclipse drank from the bucket that some friends brought over. Shira profited from it to ask how much they had collected today.
"Worth about 40 golden coins, Shira", replied one of the boys with a smile. Indeed, 40 golden coins was not that bad for them, especially since they had performed in a small village. It was roughly 0,8 gold per person, quite a lot for farmers living in such an isolated place...
He put the towel on his shoulders, drying his neck. "Eclipse, please wait here for a sec'. I'll talk with Grandpa for a moment." They called Andes like this, because he was the oldest, and in some ways they all were a small family. They had journeyed together for many years, some of the girls had got married, some even were traveling with their children, which grew up with artists of all kinds around them. It was barely thinkable not to have one of them in the troupe, and even if someone came to mention it they changed the subject quickly. Losing one of them was like losing a chunk of their own flesh, for the troupe was way more than a group of random people that traveled together.
"So, Gramps, where' we going next?" he asked Andes as soon as he was in his wagon.
"We'll continue north, then west", answered the old man, pointing his finger on a map that he had put in front of him on a table. Shira watched, as the finger retraced the tour that they were planning. "Two more villages, then we'll arrive at the capital." He grinned. "Korona City."
Shira looked at the small picture of a castle, drawn on the map. Korona City, was written there with big letters.
It would be the first time that he went to a city of that size. Until now what they had visited had been plain small villages, sometimes a fiefdom under the rulership of a noble who wanted some entertainment. They sometimes payed well, sometimes one had to convince them. But a simple blade would do wonders if one refused to hold his or her promise.
"Will we see the castle?" he asked.
Andes looked shocked. "Of couse not, boy! We'll stay at the marketplace at best, but beyond that... I can't think of it. You'll have to watch the castle from afar."
A little disappointed, Shira nodded. "I see." It was hard not to get furious, but these were the rules. No matter how good they were, the castle was something which they could barely even dream of. It would be out of his reach, unless he let himself get thrown into the dungeons for some reason. But THAT was a bit too much... he would really have to watch the castle from afar then.
A few hours later the wagons left the village. They would arrive in the next place very soon, and stay there until the morning. Waiting where everyone knew they were was too risky, especially with 40 gold pieces more to steal... it wasn't like they couldn't defend themselves, but avoiding difficult situations was always better than to deal with them.
Yen crossed her legs and began to drum her fingers against each other as she listened to the Dwarfs complaints. She smiled as the Dwarf noted the "Incidents" with her soldiers. She was not fully aware of all of them but she did order a few. Such as the taking of children who half of which were slaughtered or tampered with (Killed were Necrotized) and a few were kept for her personal keep. With two in particular she treats as children while the rest as slaves. She grew quite fond of them and enjoyed their presence, though they originally were mortified by her day to day activities they eventually adapted to her and vice versa. When the small man ended his problems she took her helmet off and said "It gets quite stuffy under there. Now I understand your complaints but they were an experimental batch of soldiers made of a mish mash of what we got from our skirmish with an orc tribe and elven scouting party who unknowingly sneak attacked my guards simultaneously. I shall dispatch some of my Scars and medium ranking soldiers and undead to remedy any security crisis." she added a bit of an emphasis on security crisis as if she knew about the destruction of the town, but it was a bluff to keep him unease. As she knew of an orc attack but not on who or where so she was gambling on their rivals, and to most she would seem like she was telling the truth.
"Now Veridan correct? Well Lord Veridan your slate isnโ€™t exactly clean itself. You see we also asked for aid through soldiers for our outer towns due to minor conflicts with Human kingdom and you did send soldiers. My people have a rather funny nickname for them but I believe you call them priests, paladins, and inquisitors. They did a rather shoddy job of defense due to them setting two of my gambling streets on fire, interrupting a festival's gladiator fight, wasting time on teaching some of the smaller villages to worship other religions, dismiss soldiers from their posts only to never have them replaced, and the most aggravating of them all is the sudden stopping and ruining of a ceremonial rite to be a fully classed Crimson scar which ended with the defiling of a blood pool to dunk the apprentice in." she added the last part bitterly and gave a death glare at the King but softened up and gave a smirk " But you know this part's actually quite funny, you see one of the guard posts was a immigration processing building which allowed for a elven spy for the city of Korona to slip in and gain vital information for our defenses. Luckily we devoured her, quite literally, before it was too late. So you could say the soldiers did the opposite of what they were assigned for." she gave a bit of a laugh, chuckle, or snicker occasionally and did a lot of soft chuckles at the elven spy for Korona slipping in and stealing info part.
Veridan listened patiently as she not only accepted his claims, but turned the light back towards him. It was true that he had ordered soldiers to be sent to Vegoran. Only later had he learned that his orders had been carried out with a bit of interpritation. Not that he had really objected at the time. When he had learned that he would have to pay compensations however, that was when the crap hit the fan for those responsible. Normally compensations were no problem, but the sheer sum that was asked was ludicrus to say te least.
After she had finished speaking, Veridan bowed his head and thought for a good bit. Finally he spoke in a clearly forced voice of calm. "It seems that many 'incidents' have occured between our two nations. Most of these seem to be due to conflicting cultures." That was an understatement. The villages converted by the paladins had started a bloody yet unsuccesful rebellion, wich both sides had agreed to put down. This of course had turned public opinion against him for awhile.
"But now, I would propose a pact agreement. I seek to continue our alliance if possible, yet events conspire against this. I suggest that we combie our efforts. More specifically I would like to propose a deal. Recently the close to the surface city of Kal-Thrall has fallen. It was over-run by orcs and its citizens slaughtered due to cowardice. Those responsible are being judged, but that is not the point. Since the city is close to our borders, I would propose that we ressettle the city together, with both of our nations and cultures combining their efforts. This would be much of a tie between us, and possibly good for trade for both of us."
What he spoke of would have sounded like a gracious gift to most people, an olive branch somewhat. While their cultures were different, a combined effort to make a coherent city-state that both nations held sway over might just work. The risk was that one side might become more influential, and that a war might erupt over control. This was because Kal-Thrall was a significant city, with both above-ground and below-ground sections. The region was also rich but agriculturelly and industrially.
The Royal College of War was a vast, colonnaded building โ€“ drowning beneath an enormous bleeding heartvine that had thrown green and red across most of the originally-golden stonework - walled off from the rest of the city, its own little world of courtyards and quadrangles, practice rings and sparring courts and sprawling libraries and map rooms, all guarded and off-limits to the regular citizenry.
The only real traffic in and out of the place was the military โ€“ officers, to be precise, aspiring young lieutenants to battle-scarred brigadiers to portly and shrewd armchair generals, honing their skills, talking with their peers, formulating plans and orchestrating the defence of the realm.
Theolianโ€™s elaborate coach-and-four, gryphon crest gleaming in gold while champagne horses stamped their feet and tossed their heads in the traces, stood at the foot of the double-curved staircases up to the main entrances, waiting patiently for the kingโ€™s re-emergence โ€“ which presently occurred, in the middle of a gaggle of senior military officials that accompanied him to the very doors of his carriage, still deep in discussion.
The king was handed into his coach by an immaculate footman, and as the doors clicked shut and Theolian settled back into the plush purple upholstery, he called: โ€œHome, James, and donโ€™t spare the horses!โ€
Hooves striking sparks from the cobbles, the carriage rattled across the forecourt and thundered through the gatehouse arch, watched by the Brigadiers and Colonels of the Avalonian Army.
Brigadier dโ€™Marais watched the coach go with a sigh, then clapped his large hands together. โ€œAll right, gentlemen! You heard the King. We have work to do. Inside, everybody.โ€ One black-gloved hand shot out to point at a lieutenant, vibrating with nerves in the presence of so many of his superiors. โ€œLieutenant, get me the signal corps we have on secondement from the Royal University and the communications apparatus for Keeps Tellurian, Gash and Black Dawn, Castle Ctiaro too โ€“ theyโ€™re the closest civilian fief to the Zegoran border. At the double!โ€
The poor lieutenant saluted briskly and marched off at not-quite-a-run while the rest of the Army General Staff who were present at the Royal College flooded back in, to plot how best to reinforce the borders of the country next to Zegoran with troops both mundane and sorcerous โ€“ preferably without overly-alerting anyone else.
Back at Castle Korona, Theolian was meeting with his ministers โ€“ specifically, those responsible for the Interior โ€“ the roads, the heliograph network, the post and tax collection, for example โ€“ and those from the Ministry of the Treasury.
โ€œGentlemen, calm yourselves, please!โ€
The mutters rumbling around the high-vaulted council chamber โ€“ panelled in wood and with an enormous globe in the centre of a ring-shaped table, lit from within and from without by clear, bright magitechnological lanterns that never died or flickered โ€“ petered out.
โ€œNow, I realise it isnโ€™t exactly convenient, but diplomacy and politics never is. Gentlemen, tensions have risen with Zegoran as of late, and Ctiaro duchy will require additional support โ€“ economic and infrastructural. Now, we need to think how this can be done. Now, Viscount dโ€™Barabas, I believe Brigadier dโ€™Marais will be putting the Butterfly Watch battalion at your disposal to help with the upgrade of the infrastructure โ€“ they are skilled at fortifications and shovelwork, youโ€™ll be able to make use of them, Iโ€™m sure. Duke dโ€™Ctiaro has been informed, too โ€“ Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll be hearing from him soon.โ€
โ€œThank you, majesty, weโ€™ll do our best...what resources, aside from the Butterfly Watch, will we have?โ€
โ€œLiaise with the Treasury for what the vaults can bear โ€“ weโ€™re doing this discreetly, so no great expenses at once. Iโ€™ll dip into the Crown estates if it turns out to be necessary, but it probably wonโ€™t be. I simply want to be ready. The Royal Eyes have their instructions to monitor events, so I shall keep you informed as best I can.โ€
Nods blossomed around the table. โ€œNow, item fifteen...Earl March, if you would?โ€
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Head Butler of Castle Korona, Mr. Sanzin, sailed into the kingโ€™s study bearing a silver tray piled high with delicacies, a steaming teapot and wafer-thin bone china cup balanced around the confectionery.

โ€œAfternoon tea, your majesty. Chef has sent your favourites โ€“ fluffed scones with butter and raspberry jam, meringues with chocolate dipping sauce and a slice of dark truffle cheesecake.โ€

Theolian barely looked up from his reports. โ€œHmm, thank you. What tea?โ€

โ€œGunpowder Blue, majesty. To enervate the royal person in the long afternoon.โ€

โ€œGood, good.โ€ Paper rustled. โ€œGo and get me a brandy, would you? Rosaille Grand Sol, if you can manage it. I think the Gunpowder Blue will take it.โ€

Sanzinโ€™s eyebrows moved a millimetre. It was still early, after all, but he bowed and shimmered out on the errand.

โ€œA dragon sighting? Of a baby dragon? So near Korona?โ€ His beringed hands flashed as he scrabbled in the reports. โ€œThereโ€™s not much you can mistake for a dragon, but a baby...โ€

โ€œYour brandy, your majesty.โ€ The butler ghosted back in with an elaborate cut-crystal bottle half-full of a rich, smoky liquor.

โ€œOh, thank you, Sanzin. Look, what do you think of this? Apparently, thereโ€™s a baby dragon in our kingdom, of all things. Near Korona, too.โ€

โ€œA baby dragon, sire? Are you sure itโ€™s not another animal? Circus troupes always try to dress up a Culvish salamander or something as a dragonet.โ€

โ€œHmm. Maybe. You can go-โ€

A Guard sketched a bow by the doors even as both Theolian and the butler whirled to glare at the interruption. โ€œMilord! Sire! Lady Provost sent me, sire! One of the actinโ€™ troupes has pitched up in Fountains Square!โ€

โ€œAnd what of it, man? Fountains Square is a place for such things, as you should know and as Lady Provost certainly does!โ€

โ€œNo, no, majesty, begging yโ€™forgiveness, sire, itโ€™s what they have with them. Sergeant Sultai anโ€™ his squad had the Fountains beat, was on guard at the time, heโ€™s spent some time in the Ridgebacks...โ€ Theolianโ€™s face had darkened with impatience, and the guard swallowed nervously before his kingโ€™s obvious displeasure.

โ€œHe says theyโ€™ve got a dragon with them, sire!โ€

Theolian and Sanzin shared a glance. โ€œIt never rains but it pours. All right, Sanzin โ€“ message to Captain Breytenbach. We need four of his Guards โ€“ We are going to have a little look-see at one of our marketplaces that has caught our eye of late. Always good to keep in touch with the common folk, you know.โ€

Sanzin cleared his throat. โ€œYouโ€™re going yourself, majesty? Is that entirely...wise?โ€

โ€œWe do happen to be a mage, Sanzin. We are well able to take care of ourselves.โ€

And so it was that Theolian Caradis dโ€™Mereille and four Royal Guards rode down into Korona, the king sans crown, sans robes of State, a nobleman riding with a little protection, nothing more. At least, on the surface, anyway.

"It was good to have traveled directly to Sorek Town", explained Shira to Eclipse. They both were just preparing themselves for the performance which would take place in about half an hour, waiting in the wagon that they also inhabited during the travels to be called out.
"There have been recent sightings of bandits and cutthroats near our original destination, so Andes has decided to skip that part -" he showed it to Eclipse on a small map which he had put on the ground - "and go directly here." He pointed at Sorek Town on the map. Having visited Urogi Town, their original destination for that day, would have meant to travel away from Korona City, around of which the towns and villages were the safest thanks to the guards.
He grinned. "Although, I am not that sure that Andes actually wanted to avoid those thugs. He is the only one claiming to have heard about these people, so he may very well just want to arrive at the capital sooner."
"Why do you think that?" asked Eclipse. Her growling would never have been understood by normal men, but Shira had grown up with her, and thanks to his magic he had been able to learn to understand her language.
"Korona City is the last etappe of this years' tour. The people there are rich, and they like performers and artists, if they are good enough."
"So he is speculating on the money... but why not visit Urogi Town first?"
"I guess that he wants to stay at the capital for longer than one day", estimated Shira. "The longer we stay there, the more money we will make, and the better the winter will be for us. And since we can't perform during the winter as the roads are too snowy to travel on, we'll have to buy enough supplies to get through it."
Eclipse nodded. "Or maybe he just wants to do you a favour", she said, "since you want to see Korona City so badly."
Shira grinned and kicked Eclipse in a firendly manner. "I really don't know why I don't let you think for me, since you know everything better than I do."
Eclipse shook her head. "One and a half brains are better than one", she said grinning.
Smiling as well, Shira said: "I'll show you what my brain half can think of to torture you a bit." He jumped from his seat, landing on Eclipse's back, and tickled her belly before she could throw him off. They ended up almost knocking over the table, as Eclipse desperately tried to save herself from Shira's fingers, before they calmed down and separated.
Eclipse jokingly did as if she was now angry at Shira, but they both knew that before that would actually happen, the king would start to fly. They were bound together for their whole lives.

Yen gave a mental smile when she learned her gamble was correct in thinking of the orcs and the dwarves but she quickly dismissed it as to allow full attention to the king. She was rather surprised and shocked to hear of the idea of two kingdoms inhabiting one city and have equal control. She was far more worried about the idea of racial prejudices toward her ilk if such a plan would be made, but what frightened her the most was the idea of having multiple buildings of those damned over confident, proud, ignorant, "religiously intolerant", twenty foot long stick so far shoved up there ass that a twig can be seen from their eyes priests and paladins. She remained silent for a few beats before taking it into more deep consideration. After some thinking she opened her mouth and said in a happy and silky smooth voice "This idea is rather... unprecedented but I do see some of the things we can work out with this. Yes our cultures are rather different but some of our most treasured things blend well together. As all who have seen Zegoran know that we are a kingdom of risk, as such we are the leading kingdom for things such as gambling, betting, and prostitution. Dwarfs are stereotypically known for one thing, alcohol, and drunken people with big wallets could mean much commercial success for both ends. We could split the money 40 60 in which you get the larger so long as we can work this in. As normal the treaty will give us a fresh supply of corpses from your graveyards, prisons, and accidents. But my people want to return to our golden age of our dragon alliance in which we got the most corpses to date. So to help us we want corpses from war zones and battlefields as well. Say they are scouts or morticians to keep the public a bit back drafted if you must but we still need more and more people. Any waste you might throw away will also be sent to us for refinement into houses, alchemical ingredients, and several other things to aid in an increase of resources from use of lesser resources. Back to the topic of the city, for cultural purposes we would need to also sanction down a Crimson Scar Tower and barracks, gladiator arena, and necromongers tomb for the revival of the dead you shall help supply. We can work out further details later on but first let us celebrate this ground breaking occasion.โ€ She slips out a note and stands up handing it to Veridan before bowing (showing excellent cleavage) and turning around asking him to come. (On the note is: โ€œYou have been honorably invited to an arena showing in the capital city of Zegoran, Liocios)

Veridan thought about her proposal for a moment. Parts of it seemed inviting, while others repulsed him. The suggestion of giving over their honored corpses to the Vegorians particularly disgusted him. It showed plainly on his face. He would need to think of a way to work this out, and fast. Veridan would lose face if he suggested something only to have him deny it as well. After another few moments of thought, he came to a conclusion and spoke.

"I have decided. I will agree to your terms. While the thought of having our corpses and honored dead touched gives me an ache in my heart, I accept. BUT!" He said the last part with authority. "We must keep the public happy. All corpses will be delayed for burial purposes. Any that die in combat will be reported as missing, while those who die otherwise must be buried. We can remove the corpses later, and no-one will ever know."

Veridan then got up from his seat and held out his hand. He had no intention of sending any people of worth to the city. Instead he would send the castless. These were criminals, and the descendants of criminals. No one cared if they were lost.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Hmm not really. We just don't use these forums much.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Zegoran is in now, and I wrote down which important places are aleady taken, too. I'll get on writing then.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Well I'm going to have a post up to start the RP in about say 10 minutes from now that will involve Higurashi's character, but in the meantime Rance can you add a new area called Zegoran the kingdom of darkness that is the emboidement of suffering, risk vs reward, eternal striving for things, and most things that the other races would deem either immoral or corrupt

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

well, I'll be waitin guntil the IC gets up.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

@ Duchessa I already did that. I don't know why, but the RP has not appeared in the list, so I put a thread in the roleplayers wanted section instead.
Anyone can start writing if they want, as we have got 2/3 faction leaders (human and dwarven king, undead leader (?)) plus me, which should be enough to start. If no one does, I'll do instead, but I recommend that everyone writes like a short intro.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Well, there'll just have to be factions then

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

No not yet I believe Rance will start first but if not then Rance can gladly ask me to start..... though I believe we may have 1 to many royalty, even if mine is not considered a major faction.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Hey all just joined. is there an IC yet?

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Have you considered asking in the Roleplayers Wanted bit of the forums? Just a thought.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Ok TheDoombringer, I checked and approved your character.
As for the game, I think that we can start already since it's not in the Newest Roleplays list anymore, so we'll probably not have many more people joining.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

Well I've submited my character and am waiting on wether or not she'll be accepted. Not exactly sure on how we are going to start this or anything really, or better yet when we will start this.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

@ TheDoombringer Great to see you interested. There's not much to say about undeads, I don't use them much and didn't actually expect someone to make a character, so go ahead and make what you want - as long as it's not Terminator come from the future, I guess it's okay :)
Classes are pretty much jobs, maybe I wrote that wrong. I mean that it is to "classify" your character, but I guess you're right, I'll change that soon.

Re: [OOC] Fantasy Medieval Roleplay

I'd be interested in this. And want to be an undead, anything specific about them I should know before making one? Also the classes just seem like jobs but im perfectly fine with that.
