Adam Xanatos's Story

Adam wheeled himself back into place at his desk. He'd gotten the digitizer recalibrated with new hardware and some new hardwired code. Better correction algorithms and other such necessities, as well as options for preloading disc mods before rezzing in. Well that was done, back to working on his custom programs, including backups of his primaries and starting work on a new sparring program in case some one interesting stopped by. The wheelchair bound programmer had been considering letting other people into the digital world his father had showed him.
Korlyn looked up at the XCom building, and ran her tongue lightly over her teeth behind her lips, feeling where her teeth had busted through them not so long ago from the trashing she had gotten. Though healed the little line could still be felt and she wondered if it would be permanent. She didn't want that to happen again. And her boss had recommended getting an upgrade. She wasn't even aware there was anyone who could work with her equipment, but he seemed to think that XCom could. So she would trust him. She stepped in through the sliding doors and walked over to a desk. "Hi, I need to speak with someone about the software on some milspec implants." She hesitated slightly before reaching up and pulling off her goggles and revealing her bright metallic eyes, the minuscule servos adjusting her focus on multiple wavelengths. "I need an upgrade."
Adam looked up from his wheelchair, adjusting his classes with a friendly smile. "Well, you've come to the right man for software." he said, opening up a registry on the computer before him. "What implants do you have currently, as much information as you can give me will be helpful, unless you'd prefer to download the specs to our system and I can have Absilon take a look." he said. Bringing up the program, and preparing some preliminary instructions for his system admin.
"I can list them if you really want. But it'll probably be easier to download the specs." She ran fingers along the back of her neck and opened a small port where she extracted a thin fiber optic cable with a fairly standard head on it. "I've got a full military augment suite: neural weave along spine and skull, muscle density, tactile weapon and vehicle links, dermal web, optic replacements, not to mention my pharmacope. But you can forget about touching that, it's encrypted and locked in ways I'm not even sure of." She leaned against his desk and looked at him with her artificial eyes, unblinking and a little too wide, the constant and visible refocusing caused many to be unnerved when she looked at them. Thus why she wore her goggles.
Adam smiled, "I'm sure I could crack it, Azazel is the best hacking program out there." he said with a chuckle, "But as you wish." he added, taking the jack and plugging it in. With the specs dowloaded and Azimuth sifting through them, he handed the cable back to her. "It will take my system a short time to see what sort of code is there and what I can do to improve it. At the moment I can promise faster process speed for all system and increased security against cyber attack, if that is an issue with cybernetics." he said, he wasn't too sure. He wheeled himself out from behind the desk. "So, military type?" he asked, "I don't suppose you would take sitting in a waiting room too well?" he asked, mostly for his own benefit. "So...how about a combat sim?" he asked.
"I wouldn't recommend trying, apparently it's a Cashmere original," the enhanced elf crossed her arms under her breasts and looked at him. "That all sounds pretty good. I'm also going to need a drone patch for the program I've been running. Something about it has been bugging out when the drone gets above 37 degrees above the horizon from my position. But yea... what sort of combat sim? I'm still under doctor's orders for no exertion," her tone indicating that she did not think very highly of that idea. "Like a game or military?" She hadn't taken well to tactical sims since her friends had been wiped out. It had been a great pastime for them between jobs and there were always making bets. She felt a sting at the corner of her eye as her artificial eyes prevented her from even attempting to shed a tear and she gave a slow blink to clear the sensation.
"Just some games, you're body will be digitized, no true physical exertion, you'll come out the same way you go in." he said, wheeling over to the digitizing laser. "So, preferred weapons?" he asked, he'd try to match them as best he could with the mods he had been able to work out, if not she'd get a standard loadout that he had premade. He himself wouldn't be competing but he'd join her to walk her through and make sure everything worked out alright.
"What do you have for assault rifles?" She walked over to take a look, leaning over the device to get a look at it. "I'll also take a nice high cal pistol," she had been trained extensively with a variety of weapons from sniper to darrenger. Though she had the most experience with assault rifles her personal preference was with a nice high caliber pistol. Her hand eye coordination and speed at close ranges made pistols a constant part of her standard loadout. She fingered the k-bar knife attached at her hip and figured it would be digitized with her so she wouldn't have to worry about requesting that.
"So, rifle mode, assault class, and blaster mode, heavy variant." he said, deciding that would work fine for her as he input the parameters. With a few more keystrokes he wheeled around in front of it as well. "Try not to flinch, this will be a little disorienting." he said as the beams shot out and scanned their bodies and consciousness into his private servers. They'd reappear on a blank grid like floor with walls far in the distance. Their clothing black with glowing blue lines, some even for his wheelchair.
"On your back you will find a disc, another on your hip. Both can serve as bladed weapons, your rifle can be accessed by pressing this button here" he paused and held out a baton to her, showing her a button with a rifle on it and touching it to the edge of a disc, it will reformat automatically. There should be a button for pistols on both discs as well." he said, wheeling around to get out of her way so she could get used to her new weapons.

Korlyn nodded and held still as she was scanned. The transition was an odd one, far more realistic than just plug and play that she was used to. "Am I really here, or is my body back in the room?" She pulled out one of the disks and gave it a spin around a finger before slotting it back and drawing the baton. She flicked the button and watched it transform. She held up the rifle and checked the balance and fired a shot into the wall so she could feel the kickback. It was less than she was expecting and she smiled. That would make it a lot easier to maintain a target while moving and firing. She flicked it again to the pistol and was pleased with the compact design as well as the shot that came out of it. "These will do nicely," she murmured and turned to the man. "You know, I don't know if I got your name. I'm Korlyn of ASI," she held out a hand to him. "We going to be fighting each other or are there some bots to blow up around here?"
"Adam Xanatos." he replied, smiling, the Disc blaster was just about the only weapon he could effectively use with his wheelchair. It was a nice little weapon though, the disc itself getting a little triangular extension to it and a hand grip forming in the middle. The rifle was gripped in the center of the disk as well with a fairly compact barrel section.
"If you want I can rez in some bots but they won't be much of a challenge, at least not for a trained soldier." he said, bringing up a screen. "I could pit you against Azazel." he said, making a few taps and a man in a black cloak with orange lights instead of their blue dropped in, landing and standing up with a cocky grin under his hood. "A user, this will be fun." he said, reaching for disc at his back.
"If you want I can rez in some bots but they won't be much of a challenge, at least not for a trained soldier." he said, bringing up a screen. "I could pit you against Azazel." he said, making a few taps and a man in a black cloak with orange lights instead of their blue dropped in, landing and standing up with a cocky grin under his hood. Korlyn fiddled with her weapons as she looked over the two before her. One being the programmer, and though he appeared physically limited in his chair she doubted that that mattered much here. And two, the cloaked man with orange highlights. "Hey, i'm fair game, if you both want to come at me then so be it." She set the pistol modded disk and attached it to her hip without needing a holster in this digital wold. She did something similar with the disk on her back, adjusting it to a modified assault rifle with a bayonet with a glowing blue blade slung just below the barrel. She attached the long arm to her back and struck a jaunty pose as she looked between them. "I've been itching for a good fight since I got thrashed a couple weeks ago. So you'll have to pardon me if I need to get my mad on here." She ground one fist into the other and nodded her head causing the goggles she had set on her forehead before to slide down and engage with her artificial eyes to give her a broader range of vision than even they allowed.
"Well, have at her Azazel." Adam said, wheeling back and summoning a platform to move him up out of the way of the coming fight.
Azazel grinned, helmet visor sliding up from behind his head and covering his eyes with a shiny black casing. Disc in hand now he took a few steps forward and hurled it with great force towards her. Adam had taken the liberty of raising some pillars of various heights to provide cover and higher ground. A 'death' here on this sim grid would simply spit her back out into the real world with no ill effects.

The elf girl gave a spritely little smile and laughed as she tumbled to the side behind a pillar and sliding the rifle into her hand. She braced herself against the pillar and peeked out with the AR raised and fired a triple burst of energy projectiles at Azazel's location. Then she ducked down and made a fast low run towards a series of larger but lower columns that she could alternately fire over or around. It had been a while since she had been able to play in a VR environment like this one. She wondered if she might be able to persuade Xvander to try and buy her a copy. He was a bit indulgent of his employees so long as they continued to carry out the missions he assigned them.
Azazel ducked behind a pillar, catching his disc as it returned to him. He pulled out his second, switching to blasters similar to the one she had been given. They however fired faster, lighter bolts. He leaned out to the side, snapping off a few short volleys as she ran. The program was playing for keeps, aiming for her knees, trying to slow her down.
Korlyn jumped over his shots her slender athletic body sailing over the low shots before tumbling behind the barrier of the columns. She didn't hesitate however to pop up and unleash a heavy volley of shots at Azazel's own pillar and trying to keep him pinned there while she determined the layout of the arena they were playing in. She gave herself a route and ducked down again, pausing to adjust the settings on her rifle, the barrel widened dramatically. She took a deep breath and sprinted out from cover with the rifle ready to return a large and explosive shot as soon as Azazel showed himself.
Azazel could be heard uttering a curse as the blast came at him, one blaster reformatting and spreading out as a shield. He was able to block the blast, though not without being thrown back.

Korlyn laughed and changed tactics, letting the assault rifle return to the throwing disk which she slapped to her back and drawing the pistol in the same fluid motion she began walking towards Azazel firing steady hard shots at his center mass. Her intent to keep him pinned behind his shield or risk getting shot when he attempted to return fire. She needed the time to keep him pinned so her other weapon could recharge, it seemed that the single large shot had drained it significantly of whatever energy it was using and would take a few moments to recharge. Moments that she could not spend hunkered down behind a barrier. She needed to keep the pressure on. Her steady shots were causing a slow drain from her pistol but the disk on her back was charging faster so there didn't seem to be a risk of her running dry, yet.
Azazel planted himself as the shots kept at him. This was interesting, he wasn't used to getting into a gun fight. Running and gunning yes, but he tended to disc fight or engage in close range combat with his signature mod Adam had given him, which he was dying to try on her.

Korlyn cursed internally even as she let a slow manic grin spread across her lips. This was a lot more fun than she had anticipated. She began to circle around the pillar instead of advancing. She kept up the steady rate of fire, alternating sides evenly. An idea occurred to her, something she wouldn't try in the real world but could give some serious attention here. She checked her own neural interface and found the right program: "Two Gun Mojo". It was a program that someone in her former platoon had come up with but no one believed he could make work effectively in combat. It was something out of an action movie, something which would be stupid to try. She thumbed a dial on the back of her pistol and decreased the caliber slightly as she reached back for her recharged disk. however, instead of converting it back to a rifle she flicked the pistol switch and a second pistol started to fire at Azazel, trying to keep him narrowly pinned behind the pillar as shots came on either side simultaneously.
