a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Chuckles

Groups

The major players and contacts of Cedric Valentine's sprawling business empire.

Description

Image
Personal assistant and "driver" for Cedric Valentine. Max is not only an accomplished driver but also a licensed pilot. He is technically not a Valentine Inc. employee, but his proximity to Mr. Valentine has resulted in him commanding a certain amount of clout in the company.

Max often refers to his current position as "retirement", hinting at a long and complex history of more demanding work. Rumors range from freedom fighter to hitman, special operator to spy. Whatever the case he certainly has never seen fit to offer any clarification to the silent questions on his past. It's unknown how much even Cedric Valentine knows about his assistants past exploits.

So begins...

Max folded the news paper over and took a sip of his coffee, not much going on today in Aziora. He absent-mindedly checked his watch, but he didn't have to be anywhere. The boss was out on some personal expedition, it was a perk of being the driver to a man who didn't need a driver.

Perhaps he'd detail the car, he thought. Most of the vehicles were maintained but Max still enjoyed getting back to his roots in the garage. Tucking the paper under his arm he finished his coffee and stood, buttoning his coat.

"See you Tony." he waved to the man behind the counter as he went out into the street. He pulled his hat out of his pocket, brushing it off and placing it on his head with a kind of professional touch. Max would have made a fine old world gentleman, and old world gentlemen made for fine chauffeurs.

Crossing the street he opened the door of the black sedan. Tossing the paper in he sat, but that's where his inatentional blindness wore off. The first thing he noticed off was alcohol, cheep alcohol. Then he realized that while the door unlocks to his touch, he hadn't heard the faint click of it doing so. There where wires dangling below the steering wheel.

He looked in the passenger seat and lifted the newspaper off of a fox. A fox wearing clothes. A drunk fox, wearing clothes, asleep, in his car.

A car jacker.

"You're kidding."

He shook the fox.

Midgra’s last memory was being kicked out of a nearby bar, buried somewhere deep in his skull. It was anyone's guess as to the events leading up to him being within this car, or how long it had been since the bar debacle. Most assuredly however he had chosen this particular make and model because of its impeccable upkeep and luxury status. If he had been sober, it might have been quite the catch, flocking it to some shady dealership or local chop shop. Too bad he had seemingly run out of gas right then and there.

The sensation of being shaken slowly brought him back into reality. Focusing as best he could on turning around, he let out a sound of lazy resentment and turned his eyes towards Max. Taking a few seconds longer than it should have, the pieces fell into place within his mind. Reaching for a clump of wires he began to stammer out an answer.
“It’s the.. wires. I noticed they were broken so I helped.” The words were still heavily slurred.
“But hey, I don’t charge you this time and we call it even right?” His blurry vision was beginning to focus, and the severity of the situation set in.

Righting himself, he began to look past Max, for about two seconds. After his body caught up with his brain, he tried to squeeze past him and take off down the street.

Max almost rolled his eyes, but he kept a careful watch on the creature before him. Midgra's attempt to squeeze past Max was met with the man ramming him between his shoulder and the steering wheel.

"Well that's simply rude." he wrestled with Midgra, "You think you'll get very far out there after trying to steal Mr. Valentine's car in Aziora City?" Max let out a rare chuckle, "You must be new."

Midgra’s back began to depress the horn as he tried again to press his way past. “Fack!” Seeing his efforts were mainly futile in trying to get away, horn still blaring, he paused for a second.

“Hey man! I dun’t care who your dad is! Shoulda bought a harder to steal…”
His still alcohol addled brain searched for the word. “Car! Crap…”
The horn that had stopped merrily resumed as he began to struggle again.

“Fix! Easier tophix…” He panted, obviously just about out of energy.
Then it finally caught up to him as he gave up. Between pants, he slowly said:

“Wait… Mr….. Valentine?"

"Yes, Mr. Valentine." Max shoved Midgra unceremoniously back into the passenger seat. Looking down at the arm of his jacket he frowned. "And you owe me a new jacket."

He thought for a moment, then reached over and pressed a button on the dash. "Call Aziora PD."

Midgra's eyes grew wide as he was shoved into the passenger seat. Of all the cars in the entire city, he had to choose the one of the man who ran it. Looking at max's ripped up suit sleeve, he backed himself up against the car door, hands running across the panel as he spoke.

"Listen man, uh... ssir. Jusslemme..." He was interrupted by Max's call to the police. He glared at Max in disbelief before hammering the button with his own hands.

"Uh that is okay! Cancel that! We're all fine here!"

Max paused, raising an eyebrow as Midgra attempted to cancel the call. It was amusing at the least, still, perhaps the authorities weren't the best way to deal with this particular nuisance.

He pressed the cancel call button. Looking down at the wires below the steering column again he frowned. It took a moment to see that Midgra really hadn't managed to do any real damage. Not that it had mattered if he had. "You know the ignition isn't in the steering wheel right?" Max asked dryly as he pressed the start button. "Right, if you don't want to deal with the police, I think we might have a solution. Seat belt fox."

He pulled out quickly and made his way toward the Aziora Tower. The stonework and brick lower building loomed over them. Max turned into an alcove in the building where a garage door opened for them leading to the street level executive parking lot.

"Out."

Midgra gave a huff of offense as Max critiqued his Grand Theft skills. "Well I know that NOW, don't I?" Another huff came from his mouth as he reached for the belt. He must have seen someone put one on before, because he almost had it right. It did however take him a few more tries that it probably should have, showing he probably doesn't wear one often. Midgra spent the majority of the ride asking max questions he got no answer to, and telling stories he thought would make him seem more sympathetic. Anything to make Max think about just letting him go. About halfway through telling Max the location of a shoebox with $500,000 in it that didn't exist, but Max could have, they began to pull up to the destination. As the car stopped, and he heard Max's stern command, he shifted in his seat a bit. Was he about to walk into this building and not walk back out? He had already tried to escape twice, met with failure. The garage door had closed behind them as well, so he had no viable exits. Sighing, he gave Max a sad look only canines can give, and popped the door open as he stepped out.

Max walked over and flashed a key card over the elevator access pad. A light flashed green and soon the elevator door opened. He stepped in and pressed 121, holding his arm out to keep the door from closing.

"This is the only exit." he said dryly. "For the record, this company will have made and spent more than five hundred thousand dollars by the time you get in here." Max didn't show signs of amusement, he was stoic, it was his job to be flat. But he was enjoying this.

"You're getting a job."

Midgra timidly walked into the elevator, obviously perturbed by the turn of events. He pressed up against one side of the elevator, shoulders drooped and ears back. Surely he couldn’t be serious about making half a million dollars in a few seconds. But maybe he was… As Midgra’s mind began to wander it was snapped back to reality with four words. “You’re getting a job.”
Midgra let out a short hyena like laugh, purely out of reflex. This was truly funny to him.
“Uh, dearest friend…” he nervously began to wring his hands together.
“I don’t em… exactly have a resume or references…” He swallowed.
“Besides! Um… Look! I only have one eye!” He hurriedly pointed at his left eye, completely white, covered with tiny imperfections. It could have possibly been a marble, from the size.

Midgra waited for a response, which he did not get. Body language unchanging, hands still wringing, Midgra and Max ascended towards his fate.

As the door slid open Max set off. The floor receptionist simply waved. Max was almost as well recognized in the tower as Cedric Valentine was, being the bosses personal assistant had that kind of perk.

He made his was to an office door that read 'vice President Doran Rey.' and knocked. A moment later a voice responded "Open."

No less than thirty open windows floated above the man's desk. Various feeds from field operators, timelines, updates, inquiries. "You're busy." Max apologized.

"Nonsense." the man waved his hand across the sea of windows causing them to minimize. "What can I do for you Max?"

"Got someone you might like to meet. Looking for a job." he turned to Midgra, "and to get out of a bit of trouble, isn't that right?"

Midgra let out another huff, rolling his eyes at Max’s words. Looking anywhere but in the direction of the desk, he stuttered out a response to Max’s query. He wasn’t sure if it was adrenaline or the hangover that was making his hands shake, so he kept them nailed to his side.

“I… I… Have… Well, pleasure to uh…” trailing off, his eyes met the floor.
“Meet you.”

He took a breath, and seemed to hesitate, closing his mouth again in thought. Without warning, he looked up at the table and ran up to it, hiking himself up on the desk and addressing the man in a panicked ramble, hands waving in front of the screen. For his first job interview, his etiquette didn’t quite seem to be up to snuff.

“Please friend, just lemme fix your car! I know I can! And if you wont let me, I mop the floors, I clean the windows! Just until I buy you new car, a better one! Um… Um…” hurriedly he ran to one of the windows and spat on it, proceeding to wipe a smear onto it with his dirty sleeve. “I can do jobs! Look how clean your windows are now!” He laughed again, extremely nervously. He was feeding off his own energy and working himself up.

“Anything! Just tell me what! I'll never bother you or your slave again!” He began to pant from all the activity.

Doran looked at Midgra, then at Max, then back to Midgra. Then he burst into laughter. "Calm down, and stop streaking up my windows." turning back toward Max he asked "So, what did he do to be so worked up?"

"Tried to steal the car." Max replied, "Didn't seem keen on meeting with authorities, and I know you have openings for the, less legal inclined."

Doran wasn't a bad person, he just wasn't opposed to using labor where it was convenient, and debt labor wasn't the same as slavery, which was generally frowned upon in most of the Valentine companies.

"I don't run a cleaning service here. All I'll need from you is the ability to observe things, and relay information. Can you do that..." Doran paused, realizing he didn't know the creatures name. He cast a questioning glance at Max who shrugged "Didn't ask."

"Whats you're name anyway?" Doran finally asked.

Midgra's attention went from Max and Doran respectively as they spoke to each other, retracting his arm from the window in a slow motion. His ears perked up and body stance lightened as Doran asked the question.

"Midgra. And that's easy! I am BEST observer. BEST relayer."

He waved a hand in front of him dismissively as he spoke, showing complete confidence. He came a bit closer to the two and asked:

"That is all? No salt mines? No cleaning? No car repair?"

He began to look around the room, poking and prodding at trinkets which he found amusing.
"Just watch? Watch what? Why are we watching it? And what does relay mean?"
The questions came quickly, one after the other as he continued to investigate the room.
