A band of adventurers that were chosen for a quest that started out for mere stones through deceit. Nightfall is coming to Gaia with the Second Rising of Eras. The Champions will either plunge the world into darkness or bath it in everlasting light.

Description

Name: Mikhail Kahldmek

Species: Dwarf

Age: Over 400 Years old, not precisely sure exactly how old he is

Height: 5"0 (Tall by Dwarf standards)

Weight and Body Type: 257 lbs. This Dwarf is especially burly, though he has a very low amount of body fat. Most of his weight belongs to his immensely thick muscles.

Skin color: He's pleasantly tanned but especially rosy red in the face.

Hair color: A very rich red, fading in some places though, as he is falling deeper into middle-agedness.

Eye color: A deep, but glowing emerald green.

Hair Style: His flowing, slightly curly red hair flows backward for the most part, occasionally finding itself in intricate braids and held together in stylish bunches by dwarven clasps. Some of his thick hair falls over his shoulders in front, making him look very handsome, again, by Dwarf standards.

Facial Hair: He holds the great flowing beard of a great leader. Like his hair, it is braided in some spots, ponytailed in others and altogether beautiful. It rolls down just short of his knees and basically covers his cheeks and everything below.

Tattoos/Markings: He has but one tattoo, and it isn't visible with all of his armor on. But if one were to see it, it is a marking in the Dwarvish language that represents many years of military service and overall honor for his skill in warcraft.

Facial Features: He is usually found with a big smile on his face, and more than likely, his face is a deep, rosy red. His large nose has a slight bump, creating a kind of hooked effect - nothing evil-looking, instead it represents a great leadership quality. Mikhail's eyes seem to always have a giddy twinkle in them.

{Clothing}

Mikhail is clad in the finest leather, steel, and gold combination that the best Dwarven forge-masters could create for him. Since this particular dwarf is so huge on his own, the armor basically makes him look like a gloriously shining giant. Broad as he is, his shoulder armor makes him look even broader, mightier. He carries a pack behind him, in it is a matching helmet which he rarely wears, but carries just in case. Also behind him is a royal purple cloak with a huge golden hammer stitched on the back. On the inside of the cloak is green silk, very comfortable to wear.

Personality

Mikhail is the kind of dwarf you just want to be friends with. He attracts friendly people because he is so friendly himself. He is always ready to listen to or tell a story, and even more ready to have a pint with someone. He's easy-going and very affable - one might want to talk about something deep or important about something with him, and that would be okay too.

Even though he is supremely friendly, he is also very loyal, and will not hesitate to make gravy of anyone treating a friend, or even an acquaintance, badly. His warlike behavior is only brought out when the situation calls for it, otherwise he is the one that will try and get everyone to be friendly again, and to enjoy some ale.

He is rather quick for a dwarf - both mentally and physically - and his long years in the military have made him a master tactician. Although Mikhail is quite the mighty warrior, and definitely a worthy adversary and key ally, he is even better at overseeing operations.

Mikhail is quick to help those in need, and ready to stop anything that simply isn't right, though he knows when to keep his nose out of other people's business.

Equipment

As a dwarf of many muscles, Mikhail carries a great many things, most of them weapons.

For starters, he carries on his back a great battle axe, a giant claymore, and a smaller one-handed axe. On his waist to the left is a one-handed sword, and on the right is a good sized dagger. On the outside of his left, armored boot is a sharpened stiletto and finally, tucked in his belt behind him is yet another dagger.

In his pack behind him holds small throwing axes, some nuts and bolts, a bit of currency, a large amount of bread, some water, a sealed tankard of ale, a sewing kit, a repair hammer, some medical equipment, a few maps, and finally a reading book or two.

All of this, plus his heavy armor, Mikhail carries without so much as wincing. When he was younger, he made himself accustomed to bearing such loads so that it would benefit him now.

History

Mikhail Kahldmek came from humble beginnings in one of the many mountain cities of Gaia. Destined to be a blacksmith, he took up his work at age three, so to speak, with his father. By the time he was twenty, he was so strong from his blacksmithing duties, and so large a dwarf by genetics, that a local Captain in the military offered him an officer's position.

It was better money, and it meant adventure, which this dwarf had secretly always wanted, and so he took it. He rose through the ranks quickly, easily proving himself in many battles and wars. He built up tactical prowess, enough to where at the peak of his career, he was the Commander in Chief of the Famed King Bronzebeard's Army.

After many, many years of military service, he was granted honorary royalty status as a minor Duke and was asked what he would like to do. With all of the major wars over for now, and with so much left to see, he decided to embark on an exploration quest of his own.

That was eight years ago, and so, now here he is, the Great High General Mikhail Kahldmek, whom those not of Dwarven decent would likely not have even heard of, traveling on his own. He looks for adventures, friends, places, and stories.

So begins...

"Yer too old tae be doin' this tae yerself, ye old dwarf!" he cursed himself, just loud enough for anyone nearby to hear. The mountains looked absolutely exquisite today - the innocent white snow, the magical floating bridges, his hot breath against the chill air, it was all very serene and beautiful.

Really the only thing taking away from this lovely, albeit chilly, day was the fact that this grand dwarf was underneath quite the monster of a polar bear. His face was shoved into an expression of struggle and concentration, straining his arms against the might of the wild animal, pinned down like your every-day prey.

But where the bear was strong, Mikhail the former High General was witty. A swift kick with his armored boot into the bear's gut was enough to weaken the creature; in another quick motion, he brought his heavily armored shoulder to the bear's snout, effectively knocking it unconscious. He had no desire to kill the poor thing, after all, he had been the one to wander into the critter's den.

The dwarf chuckled and patted the bear affectionately on the belly before standing up and stretching a bit. It was then that he spotted the figure of the woman on a nearby bridge. "Hmm," was all he allowed himself to mutter as he deliberately wiped some snow from his grand, red beard.

Mikhail lifted his chin a bit - unconsciously of course - in dwarven pride as the mage made her way over to him. He gave her a good look-over as she got closer, deciding that she was not what some may consider the "average human".

He was mustering a hearty greeting when she revealed the stone to him, catching his eyes in an instant. Dwarves were most certainly not above the greed of shiny things, not even this most resilient and headstrong general.

As the stone began to call for him, he fell into memories of old - his mother, his father, blacksmithing, early military campaigns. It almost brought a tear to his eye, and what the woman had said right before made his chest swell slightly in pride.

Mikhail raised a hand and slowly began to reach for the stone, but his sense came back to him in an instant. The dwarf looked up the the pretty woman and smiled, the gesture cheery and light-hearted, "My name is Mikhail Kahldmek, but I 'spose ye already knew that, Magic Mistress." His emerald eyes flit back to the stone for a moment, his armored hand inches from hers.

The dwarf was not sure what to think at this point. What she was saying sounded so absurd, so faulty, and yet...her sincerity, her passion and demeanor...somehow he knew she was telling the truth and that this stone, whatever it was, it was his to protect with his life.

Mikhail nodded and gently took the stone from her palm. After looking at it for a few seconds, he looked back up at her face, an expression of determination and acceptance on his own countenance. In his gravelly, deep voice he replied, "Worry not, Lady of Winter; this stout dwarf will defend the stone with his life, a sure guarantee."

He didn't know what the rest meant, the journey, Eshatt. But he did realize that it was of the utmost importance that he succeeded in this quest. Besides all of that, he was finally getting what he believed he was meant for all along - an adventure.

Mikhail gazed into the mystical stone once again, and then clutched it securely, lowering his hand. "What happens now?"

As the mage began to explain, the dwarf slipped the pack off his back, always keeping his eyes on her, letting her know she had his attention. He only looked away to find an extra cloth in his pack, which he wrapped the stone in before setting it in.

Mikhail pulled the pack back on behind him and let his purple cloak fall over it just as she was finishing. "If Eras is truly making his return, I'll be ready to help. Before ye go, Lady of Winter, may I ask... why was I chosen? Who is this Red Lady? And...how shall I prepare myself for such the task?"

Her information was starting to settle in his mind, and a few pangs of worry began to strike at him. Mikhail had been alive for over four hundred years, and Eras, whom he had heard of before was only a legend. To hear that this infamous deity would be making his return was more than a bit unsettling. Even more so due to his apparently important role in the events. He began to wonder if he was in over his head, so to speak.

He took the gold with a solemn nod and and watched as this mystical lady left him. He knew today was going to be different.

"Ancestral Hammers defend you Lady of Winter!" he called to her as she walked away. The dwarf tied the sack of coins to his waist and stared up at the Citadel. Gary Mandolera and Karasaad Vidathari. He would indeed search for them - his long years in service taught him that separation from potential allies never did amount to anything too grand.

Mikhail took the grand battle axe from his back and punctured the snowy ground with the grip. Preparation started today.

The middle-aged, but very heavily armored, dwarf watched as the guards bustled to and fro, guiding the spectators and trying to figure out where the assassin had gone. The corpse didn't look like he had been too important, perhaps a personal vendetta had just peaked?

In any case, Mikhail stood there on a barrel, smoking away on his large, hickory pipe. Thick plumes of tobacco smoke rolled off into the air as he puffed and he started to get strange looks from passerby's. To these he would simply smile his cheery, rosy red face at them and nod courteously.

Anyone informed of dwarf culture would be aware that his grand, golden and steel armor and grand purple cloak with an embroidered golden hammer represented something great, historical even. In his homeland, he was known as the High General and Commander in Chief of King Bronzebeard's Army. Formerly of course, he had retired several years back in favor of adventure. Still, even this far away from home, a few of the older dwarves that passed him on the barrel offered him a smile and a nod, which he happily returned.

And here he was, standing on a barrel of apples to get a better view of the scene that had unfolded only moments before he had arrived to the Citadel. Still wondering just what he was going to do about that glowing, blue stone in his pack, Mikhail finally hopped of the barrel, still smoking his pipe, and letting his deep green eyes flit around.

Before he could actually hop off the barrel, a young man backed into the barrel, making it roll sideways a bit. The dwarf quickly regained his foothold on the boards that covered that top and laughed quite the gravelly laugh. Mikhail shook his head head and smiled cheerily, raising an armored hand to wave away the apology, "Twas no fault o' yer own." He voice matched his laugh, fairly deep and slightly grainy, typical of such a burly dwarf.

The name registered though, in fact, it hadn't been too long since he had spoken to the Lady of Winter. Karasaad Vidarthi, he was the magician she had spoken of, one of the others who held a stone. "It be a pleasure tae meet ye indeed. I am High General Mikhail Kahldmek and -." he was got off by the formation of what looked to be another scene.

A man was being arrested by a guard when an arrow flew in an stuck his chest, probably killing him. "We may need tae do a bit o' investigatin' sir magician." The dwarf hopped down from the barrel and then looked up at Karasaad, motioning him toward the scene before beginning to make his way over.

"Oh I'm sure they can, laddy," he replied, the dwarf's voice was easily distinguished from everyone else's in the crowd. He moved through the people with ease, not bothering to apologize to those he bumped into or shuffled around. Mikhail didn't consider himself to be an overly-proud dwarf, but it was in their species' nature to be so.

A few people eyed the numerous weapons strapped behind him and at his waist, but he didn't heed them any attention, for he was used to such looks. The red-bearded dwarf finally reached reached the front of the crowd and he continued to speak, "But two assassinations, jest minutes apart from each other. Don't ye think it tae be a bit odd? And b'sides, ye and I, we seem tae have overlapping fates. I think it be best we stick together - that stone in your possession binds us, I 'ave one too."

He said all of this without turning around; instead his keen eyes were planted on the body, the arrow sticking cruelly out of his chest. "Magician," he spoke a bit more quietly this time, as guards were pushing the crowd, including the dwarf, backwards and away from the scene, "ye wouldn't 'appen tae have a way tae get that arrow, would ye?"

"Nice work," replied the dwarf, nodding and taking the arrow. "Let's get out of the crowd b'fore they realize there's something missing." And with that, Mikhail gestured left with his head and began to, once again, make his way through the crowd, this time away from the scene of the murder.

Assuming the magician had followed him, the dwarf inspected the arrow with impressive gauntlet and slowly stroked his beard with the other. "Yer right, it is very well made," he finally said, also stooping down to sniff it, "and this in't jest any kind o' poison on it either. Very toxic, very deadly...I've no idea what it's called, but it's been used on my men before - quick workin' stuff it is."

He examined the serrated edges and smiled approvingly; it was truly a weapon of destruction, and not just anyone could have come into possession of it. "Perhaps," he said, almost to himself, "this be a sign o' what the Lady o' Winter was talking about." The dwarf looked up then at Karasaad and whispered the cursed name, "Eras."

Mikhail set the arrow down on the floor and continued to inspect it for a few moments before the magician asked his questions. At the last one, he raised an eyebrow and looked at Karasaad, now at his level. "Ye mean tae say ye haven't heard of the evil Eras?" He thought it to be common knowledge, this individual's history and legend, perhaps not.

"Eras," he began, "was an evil deity. There is even a temple of him here, though I don't know the reason fer it. He was huge, red, and tae be brief, he wanted to swallow the world, which would ultimately give him the power he needed to slay his two brothers. Eventually the two o' them imprisoned the poor bloke n' now he's but another planet we orbit. The Lady o' Winter said that he would be making his return soon. I figure it has much tae do with the stones she gave us."

He looked around for a moment, looking for anyone that may have trailed him; when he didn't see anyone particularly nosy, he looked back at the magician and nodded at the arrow on the floor. "I suspect a few o' his followers may be risin', and this city will be key in the events tae come."

The planet by this point was mostly obscured with clouds and storms. The had rolled in starting from two places unseemingly connected; somewhere in the Weargtooth Mountains, as well as the Exalted Mountains. Before long Gaia transformed from a green globe to a gray one.

Lightning spidered across the planet to strike somewhere on Siv'en. It spidered again to strike, this time over in the Kadota Peaks. Again the lightning struck up in the Weargtooth Mountains. Purple sparks beneath the clouds sprung up for an instant over what was north Ellaria beneath the clouds.

A force grew stronger across Gaia, and as it did another force weakened. There was a quake - though barely able to be sensed, something deep beneath the ground stirred in Siv'en. The clouds there illuminated, sky breaking for a moment to reveal a valley bathed in light, before a great flash and the light dissipated, dark skies again closing in to obscure the view.

The dead star Eras shifted ever so slightly. Nobody but the greatest mappers of these stars, having had tracked them for a millennia or more, would notice anything irregular about the movement. It was slightly, oh so slightly, faster than usual. Eras's great mass moved fully into position, placing the great Soja directly between the dead star and the planet. With this stellar line formed, Eras' power could truly grow. The magical nature of the Chousin called to Eras, well within his grasp. He tested the waters, pulling power from the Chousin as he did the stones of the Iskjerne Viking settlers, of the Taiyou weapons, of the Whispering Woods and the Bez Daha Trees. He took a little sip, and liked what he tasted, and went to draw more.

Gaia called to the champions. Time was running out.

Eras finished his great move. In position, the dead star continued to drain life from the forces of spirit, magic, and power surrounding Gaia. The great alien structure was a main target for Eras. As he drew from the Taiyou ship, drew from the Viking's forged stones, drew from Gaia herself, and the sword far below, Eras grinned.

It was very faint, but a new light emerged in the sky. Not so much new as newly awakened.

A subtle glitter undulated across the mountains, the call of Gaia. Barely noticeable to the naked eye, but nonetheless the Spirit of the Realm calling for the Champions to rise. Were there any in Skyfall Citadel who would heed the call?

The faint sound of stone scraping stone bounced off the walls of Skyfall Citadel. The mountains almost seemed to vibrate as slowly the head of the Colossi rose to the horizon off in the distance. Obsidian eyes caught the pink light of the clouds, surveying the mountains as still the Colossi upwards did rise. Soon he was visible from the citadel. Long arms extended to support the Colossi as for the first time in Ages he stood up. His hands were still firmly planted beneath the earth. The top of his head breached the pinked clouds still dumping rain here in the Skyfall Citadel, which sat on his brow above those dark eyes.

There he stood in the horizon. His brow passed through the clouds, though his obsidian eyes surveyed the Exalted Mountains. He glanced over far to the east, swept his gaze from there to Valley of Dorant, a strange place of recent history that was a popular destination for those who liked to go hiking and never again return. There, the Colossi frowned. A pulse of Gaia's magic grew stronger somewhere in the mountains as well. The floating mountains hovered a little higher again as Gaia's blessing was accepted elsewhere in the mountains. The head hovering over the horizon focused it's attention to that spot. The remaining foundation of a town on the back of his left shoulder was made visible as the Colossi turned, dust rushing through the mountains as Ni'Thorne moved.

The walls of the citadel protected the main city from these dusts, but those living on the outskirts rushed the gates in a panic. It wasn't much longer before the alarm was sound.

Meanwhile, in Norde Keep, the Oracle of Skyfall was to be put on trial. A false king had risen to the throne in the turmoil from years past, managing to slip through the ranks. He remained one of the most feared and hated individuals, his heart set on a lady he couldn't have. He did not believe the legends, felt Eras would never come back and Gaia was a fairy tale you told children so they didn't believe people like He could exist. As the corruption in Skyfall grew stronger, so did Eras, feeding off of their evil ways.

"A greater storm is coming!" Shouted an elf to the dwarven smith running for cover into the nearest tavern with her. Those who had not made it to the Norde Keep to witness the trial weren't about to leave while an alarm was being rung to keep them safe. What was happening, anyhow? You couldn't see the horizon from most points in Skyfall Citadel, but those who did would have fear struck deep into their hearts. Those who did would surely denounce the king.

There was a great explosion, a might boom across the Kingdom of Skyfall. The walls of the Citadel quivered. The People of Skyfall huddled in their residences - or remained trapped in the unfolding drama in Norde Keep.

Two quakes followed as to the south two great masses of stone collided and made home on the border of the Whispering Woods and the Exalted Mountains. A cloud of dust and debris rose through the mountains, slamming against the outer walls much like the last cloud of dust did. For the most part it seemed everyone had made it in.

The rains had stopped as well, and the clouds slowly began to clear.
They were a little pink around the edges. The pink seemed to be fading.

The Bells of Skyfall rang on, heeding warning to all to stay indoors. In the bell tower farthest south, the bellringer stared transfixed as Ni'Thorne leaned to clutch the peak of a mountain, crumbling it beneath his open palm. His mouth hung open when he saw the light nebula emerging from behind the clouds. Forgetting his duty, he watched.

Crulamin stared in awe at the titan. A tome slipped from his hand, tumbling onto the cobblestone pathway, but it was mostly forgotten. The young half-elf trembled at the sight of the being that had caused such destruction. He prayed to whatever gods would heed him, and then he rushed into the keep to seek shelter.
