Another one bites the dust.

0 · 2,031 views · located in Academia Celestia

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Moonscar

Description

1
"The vampire dropped from the roof, right onto an unsuspecting human boy. Her hand wrapped around his mouth, and her fangs sank into his neck. She held him close, thinking only of the blood running along her tongue. When the body went limp, she dropped it onto the ground, and leaned against the wall of the apartment."

2
"One of the monstrous eelheads went for a young brown-haired lad walking down the street, easily swallowing half his body, snapping it in half."

3
"And then he stepped forwards and plunged his sword swiftly in and out of Robin's heart, aiming for a quick death."
-Script

4
"The werecat turned around and made his way back up to the top, only to find Robin ...
... licking the blood?"

-Script

5.
"Robin's reassuring smile only made it worse, but eventually Nairi steeled himself and drew the razor-sharp points down Robin's wrist, a grimace fixed upon his face."
-Script

6
"A body floated into the water, twisted at odd angles, with bones sticking out of flesh. A hat floated past Nairi. Robin's little newsboy cap."

7
"A red dot appeared on Robin's temple. Then his head exploded."

8
"Splat. There may have been no visible end at the top of the stairs, but from the echoing crunch of broken bone, obliterated flesh and destroyed limb. Varyn could hazard a guess that there was indeed an end."
-Gasmask

Nairi didn't say a word. His expression barely shifted, his posture barely changed, but somehow his silence managed to convey an almost venomous helping of derision. "Stupid, stupid, stupid." he muttered, glaring at Robin. The werecat rose, stepping over to where Robin was and examining where the boy was touching the blob.

His sword arced down without so much as a word of warning, slashing through the skin millimetres away from Robin's fingers, severing it and freeing him - albeit with a small attachment of skin. "Again. Even for a human, you are stupid. Do not touch it."

Nairi circled around the mass of bodies, eyes probing as though searching for something. A few short moments later, he found it. His sword again swept outwards, this time hooking through a necklace and cutting it free of the flesh to bring it over to him. He carefully laid a hand upon it, and focused.

Plans. Meetings. Dashes of words, targets. Main Street. Wing City Plaza. The Business District. The monstrous creatures from before arranging themselves.

And a woman. Innocent, unsuspecting.

Nairi tossed the necklace away before he was forced to witness the death of the original owner. He grimaced. The attack on Main Street had been televised recently. The attack on the plaza had been just the other day. So that left one remaining.

"Going to look around. Find things." he stated, glancing at Robin. " Do not touch it." he repeated, before turning and walking further into the warehouse.

Robin hopped back, looking at his fingers, with little bits of skin attached to it. He made a face, then tried to flick it off. It didn't work.

"Yeeeeeesh..." he whined, taking hold of the skin with his opposite hand to try and pull it off. It only pulled on his own skin, and when some of it peeled off it hurt him in the process. He yelped. "Well, this is what I get...hey! Hey, kid, can you do me another favor? Finishin' the job might as well do me some good, y'know..." he said, dancing after Nairi. Before he could take three steps, he fell flat on his face again. Perplexed, for he was sure he had not fallen over his own feet this time, he looked back at the corpse, expecting it to of come to life, expecting a hand to be laying there.

No, it was just as before. With a shiver up his spine, Robin hurried after Nairi, but was unbalanced. The blood loss was actually getting to him. "Hey...wait...I don't wanna pay medical bills for nothing..."

Nairi flitted from place to place in the warehouse, heedless of Robin - at least at first. His fingers brushed against crates, discarded tools, broken glass, scanning for anything significant or useful that he might be able to divine about the activities that had taken place there. There was little that he hadn't already seen. Meetings, names, conversations that he'd already seen through the eyes of the eel-woman or 'Goulash' as the creature he had slain was called.

A glimpse of the eel-woman from the plaza passing through a dark puddle similar to the one she had sunk into there in the company of the one known as Sarka brought a grimace to his face. He had the feeling she was far from done for. He needed to find some explosives for when she inevitably returned.

Finally, Robin's fall drew his attention back, and he flitted back into view, staring at the boy. The werecat scowled. "Stupid human. Told you to go stop bleeding. Now you are running out of blood." Snatching Robin's arm, he tugged him towards the exit. "Done here. You come with me, now, to stop bleeding."

"-no. Nononono. You know how you can stop the...the bleeding? Just kill me. Please! C'mon, just...you did it with your sword. It'll be okay, swear. You know what happened before, don't you? I heard you say something. You know. So you know it'll be...it'll be fine. Right?" he blabbered, following after Nairi.

When they came to the exit, one thing was wrong. Goulash was missing, leaving red-stained grass behind. There wasn't a trail.

Nairi came to a dead halt as he spotted the spot where Goulash had been. "No, no..." he muttered, "Bad, bad, bad. Should have made sure it was dead. Stupid!" He cursed under his breath, dropping Robin's arm and crouching down beside the grass to prod at it with his sword. He snatched up the discarded necklace again, probing it for what had happened, what he had missed.

He was right. It wasn't dead. It was moving.

The werecat jumped to his feet, turning to face Robin with a moment of hesitation. "Fine, human. Not human. Whatever you are. If you say so."

And then he stepped forwards and plunged his sword swiftly in and out of Robin's heart, aiming for a quick death.

He didn't spare a moment, though, sheathing the weapon in order to maximise his speed and darting off in the direction that the creature had gone. He was forced to pause at every corner, every turn, to make sure he was on the right track -- but he was fast, and the creature was crippled.

"Who is prey now, mouse?" Nairi murmured to himself with a small grin as he ascended towards the warehouse roof in pursuit, breaking out into the moonlight to cast his golden eyes about for the slightest trace of the oversized thing.

Robin let out the smallest squeak when the cold steel moved through their body. He had not died right away, no. Death wasn't like that. The pain was so intense his vision went white, and when Nairai pulled the sword back out, he fell to the ground, death taking him.

Goulash had skittered across the rooftop, grasping his heart with one hand. By now, he had sprouted several other legs, using the bodies, swiftly disappearing to replace his damaged heart and lost blood, to make distance between him and Nairi.

Goulash's eyes glanced back at the cat boy, none of the playful insanity in them from before. It was just anger.

All sound had erased, at this time. Even Nairi's footsteps would not be able to be heard. Gravity began to increase, or so it would feel, with a heaviness laying on Nairi's shoulders, as if someone were trying to push him down.

From within the dark, there was laughter. Silent at first, but increasing gradually. Closing in on him. There was nothing but the laughter. The feeling as if something was right. Behind. Him. Breathing on his neck.

"Hhhhhhhaaaaahhhh..." it whispered. "Hhhaaah...hhhhaahhh. Hhhhhaarrrrvest."

All at once, the mist suddenly parted, the laughter ceased, the heaviness lightened. Noise came back. In front of Nairi, there was Robin, dragging something behind him. A body.

"...uh. Hey! Uh. What's up?"

Nairi staggered, claws of his free hand digging into the side of a crate to hold himself upright against the oppressive gravity. When the laughter started, his eyes widened. He'd assumed that the creature was leaving him be, by its words.

Stupid. Never trust what an enemy says! If you die now, you deserve it.

He forced himself forwards, one lurching step at a time. He could barely bring the sword up, now, but he clutched it tightly for all the good it would do him. He realised that this laughter was different. It was not Goulash.

Then the whispering started. Nairi let out a hiss of shock, whirling around to face the source and lashing out with his claws. They passed through nothing, though, and releasing his grip on the crates had him staggering again, dropping to one knee. Then the darkness, the whispering and the laughing were gone.

Nairi breathed a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding in, panting. His head hung down with fatigue. But then it snapped up, and he blinked in startled surprise at Robin. He stared for several moments, wide-eyed, the remnants of the fear that he'd felt just moments before still visible. Then he seemingly regained his composure, expression hardening as he forced himself to his feet.

"Leaving." he muttered in response, "You too. Out, go. We need to leave. Now."

There was a muted urgency to Nairi's tone, going beyond the biting terseness of before. He was still evidently unnerved.

Robin glanced at Nairi with understanding. "Yeah, uh...that wouldn't be a bad idea, right? Let's go..." he said, turning quickly to walk out, making sure Nairi was close by. The body that Robin had been dragging around left a neat trail of blood behind it. One would notice it was his own body, as well. The one Nairi had stabbed.

"You alright? Hurt? Uh...otherwise?"

"Fine." Nairi snapped, displeased with being in such a weakened state in plain view of the incompetent child he'd judged Robin to be. He limped after the boy, though with each step, the limp seemed to get less severe as his regeneration kicked in. His eyes wandered to ... ex-Robin's body for a moment, but he reserved comment for later.

"Thing got away." he added bitterly as they emerged out into the street. He cast a wary glance upwards towards the roof, as though expecting Goulash to drop down on them from overhead.

"It's gone. He ran off. I watched him." said Robin. "You did a bit of a number on him...I think? I can't really tell. Pacifist and all."

He dropped the body down on the ground, letting it roll on down the hill. Robin cringed as he heard it tumble. "But hey, you're alive...right? It's better than nothing. You've always got to be glad you came out of something alive."

"Rich coming from you." Nairi gave Robin a sharp glance, "You don't die. Not for long. Why? What are you?"

The werecat sheathed his sword, crouching down against the wall of the warehouse and leaning back against it, resting. "Surviving isn't an achievement." he went on to say, "Could do that by avoiding the fight in the first place. No, not good enough. More work to do."

Nairi gave a tired sigh, drooping slightly. "Later."

"I'm...Robin." smiled the boy, pushing his hands into his pockets. "Robin Nieves. And I'm immortal. Struck a deal with some dark powers. But hey, it's not like it doesn't come with its downsides. A-anyway...you're just going to go, then?" he asked, coming up to Nairi. "Just like that? Uh...um. I didn't catch your name, I don't think. What was it? I'm Robin, if you didn't hear earlier. Like the bird."

"Seeker." Nairi said, glancing up at Robin mistrustingly.

He paused for several moments, thinking back to the manner in which they had met. "Why were you here?" he asked, frowning. He found it suspicious that the seemingly unassuming boy had just happened to be present for both his encounters with these monsters so far. He didn't take anyone at face value, and survived by always assuming the worst of people.

It was a lonely attitude. But he'd learned it from experience. Trust was something earned, not given. Giving it led to being burned.

"I was following something," said Robin. "Something that lead me inside there after the attack. I thought it would be better than, say, sticking around with snakey lady that bit me in half like a taco. Don't you think that was better, too? But it seems, no matter where I go, I'm just gonna get killed. Not that it matters, anyway. It's just kind of painful."

Nairi gave Robin a searching glance, but didn't pick up any signs of lying. Eventually, he simply shrugged. "Go home." he said flatly, "Somewhere safe. No following strange things to dark places. That's a good place to start."

The werecat rested his arms around his knees, tucking them to his chest and leaning his chin upon them. He should just tell someone in authority about these creatures and their plans and be done with it. He'd almost died today. That was not pleasant, and he had no desire to experience it again.

At the same time, it had already been a blow to his pride. Giving up would be dashing the rest of it against the rocks. No, he'd come back, more prepared, better equipped. "Robin." Nairi said the boy's name out of nowhere, glancing up at him, "What do you do? Why did you follow the thing? You are a strange human."

"Home? Haha! Good one," Robin joked. Instead of walking away, like Nairi had told him to do, he sat next to the cat boy. "I only just got to this place not long ago. I haven't had a place to settle down yet. No money, either. That went away when I got attacked by a vampire! Everything I have on me disappears except what I had when I became like this. That being the clothes off my back."

He heaved a sigh, folding his legs. "I don't do much, y'know? When you find out you can't die, you kinda just...live. I can't do anything for the greater good or the greater evil. I'm forced to be kind of a neutral power, especially since no one can really stop me. Not truly. When that happens, when danger isn't real anymore, yeah, you're right! Things get strange. You become something out of the ordinary. You look for anything exciting. What about you? Seeker. Why so intent on finding things? On killing that thing? Are you a hero?"

"Pff," Nairi scoffed, "Good and evil. All relative. One person's greater good is another's atrocity. Nobody's all good. Human nature. Heroes are stupid. Idiots." he muttered, leaning further into his knees. "Going after them because..."

The werecat trailed off, scowling in thought. "... challenge. Getting the better of them. Self preservation, if their plans worked, bad for me. Bad for business." At least that was the rationalisation he was using. He wasn't sure, entirely, why he was doing this. Now, sure, it was a matter of pride... he supposed it had mostly been curiosity that brought him here in the first place.

Curiosity that had almost killed the cat. How poetic.

"I find things because ... I'm good at it. Makes money. Interesting stories, challenges."

Nairi growled, "Why am I telling you? None of your business." he muttered grumpily.

"Haha. Well, things are relative, sure. There's a lot of things that are, well...definitely good or bad. That thing up there. You really think it had any pure intentions? It was doing some pretty weird stuff to those people. It was letting them suffer." Robin shook his head. "I can't believe something like that, even for a second, could be good."

He laid back down on the grass without a worry. Without a care. Even the knowledge that one of his dead bodies lay not so far from them.

He laughed again, astounded by Nairi's attitude. "How could it hurt? To talk." he told him. "It's not like I'm going to spread it all around town. To what friends? To what benefit? Talking is good."

"Motives can be exploited," Nairi muttered, "Never know who's listening, who's telling the truth. I don't know you, you could be anyone."

He cast a glance across at the sprawled boy, somehow irritated by his relaxed manner, how carefree he seemed. The werecat sighed. "Who gets to judge what is good and bad? Humans? Humans do more bad than anything." he mumbled. "Of course some things are bad. Didn't say they weren't."

Nairi continued to stare impassively at Robin, golden eyes glinting in the night air.
