Simon Keane pushed open the door of the bar and entered, hands stuffed away in his pockets to protect against an unusually bitter chill for this time of year. For the first time in weeks, he actually had to wear a coat! What was the world coming to..? Alas. The bar was warm in contrast, however -- just to cause him an inconvenience, Simon decided as he slipped the coat off, folding it over his arms as he walked to the counter.

"Dear me..." Simon murmured to himself as he wandered, "Not that I'm perpetuating a stereotype at all. A Brit who complains about the weather? Surely not!"

The SOD Agent took a seat at the counter with a sigh, staring about the bar with little interest in his eyes. It was all the same, shouting this, whining that, kissing her, shooting him... he really should do something about that, but then again, this was Gambit's.

You needed backup when you were in Gambit's, or you needed to just keep your head down and remember you were off duty...

Simon Keane glanced to the side at Ishino Pue, and returned the smile. "Hi," he began, raising an eyebrow at her attire. Some felt the cold more than others, he supposed. It was interesting how quickly people approached one another in this place -- or maybe that was a national thing. He seemed to recall reading somewhere that Britain was one of the worst countries in Europe with regard to approaching strangers.

"How am I? I'm well, well. Yourself?"

Excellent conversation there, Simon. Totally original. Greeeat job.

Simon Keane nodded slowly, lifting a hand to wave the bartender over. "Simon," he replied, "Simon Keane. And you?"

The man lifted his eyes as the bartender approached, a gruff old man with an ohmygodmole right over his upper lip. The tender grunted at him, causing the ohmygodthatsahugemole to wobble up and down like it were on some sort of... wobbling thing. This appeared to be a request for an order, because as Simon blinked at the ohchristithasahairinitmole, the tender grunted once again.

"Drink?"

The SOD Agent blinked, nodding slowly. "Yes... uh, a scotch, please. On the rocks."

Simon Keane turned back to Ishino, shifting in his seat slightly. "And to meet you, Ishino.." he replied with a nod, scratching his arm. Someone was calling for help... but people were always calling for help here.

The SOD Agent cast his eyes about the room as he pondered what to say next, glancing back towards the tender as he placed the drinks down on the counter in front of them. Simon nodded to him, grinning in thanks. The agent lifted his drink up to take a gulp, before looking back at Ishino.

"So what brings you to this little corner of hell, hm?"

Simon Keane tilted his head slightly, wondering at this girl's interest. She seemed awfully polite, most girls her age went around in packs, biting and hissing at strangers (metaphorically) like a pride of lions; or were antisocial, moody and never spoke to you. Teens. It was hard to imagine that he'd been one once...

"If you particularly want to know, I'm twenty five. You look like you're still in school yourself; I'm terrible with the American school system, but I'm guessing you're the equivalent of our year nine, or ten?"

Simon Keane smiled, "Ah, summer break. I remember looking forward to that for months.." he murmured. Abruptly, he was interrupted as a loud buzzing came from his bag, followed by a ringing. The Agent blinked, glancing downwards. "Ah, sorry -- I've got to take this. I shouldn't be too long."

Taking the phone from his bag, Simon hurried towards the door, taking up a position outside and speaking into the receiver -- apparently in a quite heated conversation.

Simon Keane walked into the bar, pushing the door open without unnecessary violence. So few people around here seemed to have any consideration for the feelings of inanimate objects, kicking them, smashing them, wrestling them... it was all rather barbaric. Simon preferred a gentler touch. It meant things broke less often.

The SOD Agent (off duty of course; coming into Gambit's on duty was not only professional suicide, but quite likely personal suicide as well, all in one bucket of unstoppable conflicts) made his way through the bar proper, weaving past the various parties dotting the room before coming to a stop at the counter, just a few feet from Scylla's table.

"A glass of scotch - on the rocks - if you would, my dear tender." the man said, smiling politely. It never did to be impolite, really, it didn't get you anywhere. People were more inclined towards giving you better service, or being nicer, if you showed them pleasantness to begin with.

Character Portrait: Simon Keane Simon Keane says,
The young SOD agent blinked as he was addressed, still unused to the casual manner in which patrons of this bar approached one another. Non-existent social barriers were a refreshing change to the normal stuffy atmosphere of day-to-day life, but did come as a surprise when you were used to the barriers being firmly set in stone.

The woman that had called him also used remarkably odd language. He wasn't even sure what 'libations' were, but he was sure that they were bad for him... Regardless, she seemed friendly enough, and it had been a while since he had taken a drink with somebody new.

"I think perhaps I shall, Miss, and thank you for the offer!" Simon said, tilting his head in greeting. A few moments later, after his drink was delivered by the busy tender, Simon found himself sat opposite the woman, offering her a hand in greeting. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, the name's Simon. And this city isn't quite classless, if I might be so bold - you yourself are surely proof enough of that."

"Uhhh..." Simon began, blinking at the manner in which Scylla had taken his hand. "I think there's been a miscommunication here..." the young man murmured, awkwardly rotating their hands to shake. "A handshake, is what I had in mind." he explained, chuckling.

Realising then that the woman might not have any idea what he was talking about, Simon fumbled. "Uh, it's a greeting. If you don't know, I mean. Damn, not doing well here am I?"

Simon retracted his hand after the shake, smiling awkwardly.

Simon Keane laughed lightly, but not in an unfriendly manner, his smile warm. "Ah, we all make mistakes, my dear - I cannot count the number of times I've made a terrible gaffe in social situations. We learn with practice, though, do we not?" the young man said, nodding his head.

"Scylla? A lovely name, if I may say - I have not encountered it before. And a Paladin at that? Goodness, you're making me feel like such small-fry, here I am naught but an agent of the law, and off duty at that!" Simon continued, shaking his head. "As for my name, it is Simon, Simon Keane. My family is not of note, just an ordinary English household."

The agent took a swig of his drink after a moment, before raising an eyebrow, as if realising something. "Ah, Scylla, can I buy you a drink at all?"

The SOD Agent raised a brow, but made no other indication as to how odd he found the question. Obviously, this woman was from a far away place, or even time, and insulting someone's culture was never good. "Things are dealt with rather differently here," he began, taking a sip of his drink. "Instead of temples and gods dictating the laws, the government - in this case largely a board of prominent figures in the City - decide the laws, and they're enforced by the police; the Wing City Police Department or WCPD. I'm on a branch of that, called the Special Operations Department, or SOD - 'sod off jokes' being prevalent."

Leaning back, Simon smiled briefly. "It's not a big deal, though. We largely stay out of this bar -- it's incredibly difficult to police. Too much in the way of all-powerful entities getting involved in unlawful pursuits. Unless you have a whole load of backup, coming in here on duty is practically suicidal."

Glancing down at Carrick, Simon raised an eyebrow. Eesh, kids... where was this one's parent/s? They should really be kept on leashes...

"Uh, hi." he said, glancing apologetically at Scylla. "Where's your mum, girlie? Or this 'Scott'?"

ck]"Right... well, whoever it is that's looking after you, just... run along to them." Simon said, before blinking at Tigeria. "I have no idea how you know my name, and no, I'm busy right now, really." he said curtly, turning back to Scylla.

"Sorry about that..." he muttered, "And ah, I apologise -- did I not say? Gaffes! I did not mean to offend."

Glancing back at Carrick momentarily, Simon shook his head. "It happens a lot, in here. They seem to do okay..." he said, waving his hand vaguely. It was somewhat obvious that he wasn't fond of children.[/color]

"Well..." Simon began, hoping that this wouldn't cause great outrage. "Humanity as a whole is a carnivorous race, we require meats to survive, eating other animals. Cooked, heated, and made unrecognisable as the original animal, but we eat them nonetheless. We do eat vegetables as well, though." he explained. Hopefully Scylla wasn't offended by the concept of eating other animals...

"As for those who live on the streets... the resources of this world are not evenly shared. The people who have the most keep it for themselves, leaving those who cannot pay their own way to starve. Those of us in the middle cannot afford to help those less fortunate in significant ways, only pay for our own upkeep. It is not an ideal world, far from it..."

Simon Keane shook his head sadly, "There is no law, when all the profit and money is gained lawfully, there is no law against greed. This is an imperfect world, based around rewarding successful and ruthless businessmen. It's morally detestable, but it's better than dictatorships."

The agent shrugged, "I don't like it personally, but there's little one person can do, besides show what kindness he or she can to people."

"I have no clue, to be honest. If we have a God, he's a lazy fuck. If he's dead, nobody's noticed..."

Simon sighed, rolling his shoulders. "Whichever it is, whatever god we have up there, they aren't doing a lot."

Simon Keane was currently dozing in a booth off to the side of the bar, head lolling to the side and mouth gaping open. To be frank, he looked rather ridiculous. A few snorts came from his general vicinity. Obviously, he hadn't heard Drake Stern, or he would be a little more concerned.

Simon Keane jerked awake with a yelp, legs rolling off of the table and dragging him down to the floor with a slam. "Wha? Huh? Wha's 'appenin? Who are you people?"

Simon was confused. He was probably about to hurt himself in his confusion.
