It felt like summer that morning, or so he told himself that as he propped his door open. Everyone in the community knew Vincent kept careful care of his shop. The windows were cleaned daily, lined with items ranging from a spiked potted plant to a drying rack for your dishes. The shop front, while poorly organized, was always immaculate. In fact, every morning he could be spotted sweeping even the sidewalk outside his shop, even going so far as to collect the mess into the dustpan to toss into the bin. Today was no different. Setting his broom down just outside his door, he doubled back to that damn coffee machine. The thing was as old as time, a relic in this technologically advanced world. There was a perfectly good cafΓ© right next door, but he didn’t bother. Even some of his regulars would joke that he should invest in one of those specialty barista droids that Fey Tech had dropped this year. To Vincent DuBois however, nothing felt better than his morning cup of coffee from that shitty little machine. His enthusiasm for it eventually became contagious, and now his machine was one of the main reasons why his regulars came into his shop.

The small Styrofoam looked like a piece of a child’s tea set in his burly hand. Blowing across the coffee’s surface to cool it down as he stepped outside. His eyes darted from left to right, a habit – he was never one to let his guard down.

He lit a cigarette to enjoy alongside his coffee. It was a morning ritual before he had to play the role of local small business owner for the day. He loved these streets, especially this early in the morning. It was always so quiet. As he walked out onto the corner, a blue pit bull puppy trotted at his heels, curling up at Vincent’s feet once he stood still. Drinking his shit-machine coffee as if it was finely pressed espressos, he felt a calm settle within. Today was a big day.

β€œCome on, Blue.” His voice was gruff, as if it had yet to wake up with the rest of him. The pup looked up with intelligent eyes, seeming to nod before it took its seat just within the door. Vincent set his coffee on the stool and chucked his cigarette butt into the bin. Time to start the day, he sighed, reaching for the broom. By the time he was done, the street had begun to wake up. The street lights went out when the birds began to chirp, he could smell the baked goods from the cafe next door. He grabbed his coffee on his way in, Blue following behind. It would be a slow morning, surely he’d have time to read the paper. He was just finishing the sports section when a familiar voice spoke out.

β€œ'Morning, Vincent.” Kyle was one of his oldest customers, a rock gnome who was a local handyman for many of the apartment buildings in his area. There wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t at least see Kyle walking past his shop. He was a decent enough kind of guy. Vincent gave a nod as Kyle went down an aisle, he knew his way around well enough. When he came up to pay, Blue came around to greet Kyle as Vincent rang the gnome up. Vincent gave a smile as he wished Kyle a good day, it was the same one he’d use over and over again throughout the day.

It wasn’t until mid morning when he heard shifting from above. Blue’s ears perked, looking above them then back to Vincent. Vincent stood with his back to the door, clipboard in hand as he counted how many packs of menthol's he had on his back wall, scribbling notes as he went along. The radio was tuned to a local channel, their voices scratchy through the old dwarvInc unit.

Sun is high today, it’s like she knew she was going to be the star of today’s show. It seems like the whole city is already partaking in the Solstice festival. This morning I woke up to fireworks going off - fireworks. People are ready to let off some steam, you know.

The other voice continued. β€œWell as we all know, it’s the one of the only internationally celebrated nondenominational event in all of Pangaea, so people go pretty hard.”

β€œThat they do, Linus. Speaking of going hard, here’s the new hit from icon Tkay Maidza.”

The mornings were always for Vee. He was an early riser, no matter how little sleep the other fragments might have allotted for them the night before. They started every morning with an herbal remedy, courtesy of doc Ziran - made in that same mug Arlo had thrifted when they first moved to the city. It was the perfect shape to fit in their hands, warming them up.

Their room hadn’t changed much since highschool. It always felt like they never really moved away from home, no matter how many night’s they’d spend nights elsewhere or how many of their things they moved over. Vee had laid claim to a corner of the room, surrounding his desks with stacks of bins he had fashioned into habitats for some of his snakes. None of them were in need of a feeding, but he liked to take turns pulling them out for some individual attention.

β€œMornin’, Perlita.” Vee smiled, fishing out the orange snake from the aspen shavings it had burrowed itself within. Perlita sleepily coiled herself around his hand as he lifted her from the vivarium, her tongue flicking towards him. He brought the snake to his chest, she slithered around his neck, partially obscured by the mess of his curls.

β€œWill you be joining the morning hunt?” He asked her, grabbing his mug and a small bin tucked under his night stand as he slipped on a pair of slides.

β€œVee? Is that you?” His mother called from her bedroom.

β€œYes, amma.” Vee hollered back, throwing on an oversized jacket. He tucked a book under his arm, sliding his portable radio over his shoulder. β€œI’ll be right back, I’m going to have my tea by the grove.”

β€œOkay….do you want breakfast?”

β€œI’m not really hungry, but thank you.” Vee said, already knowing that when he’d come back his mom will have prepared an entire plate for him. His parents never missed an opportunity to be overbearing.

The actual college campus was far enough away that Vee didn’t have to worry about running into any of his classmates. On this edge of the campus it was just residential housing for the staff and their family. He kept the volume on his radio low, Tkay Maidza’s new hit playing quietly as he cut across his neighbor’s yard. They’d lived there since they were a teenager, even when they moved to the dorms it still just kind of felt like their hometown more than anything. No one even questioned when they saw Vee crossing their lawns, clad in an oversized bomber jacket, a sports bra, a pair of shorts and slides with bedhead that was out of this world - it was just part of the neighborhood charm at this point.

Before he even reached the grove he could see the grass begin to shift as the snakes slithered toward him. He didn’t know if they could just hear his footsteps or if they were just always around waiting for him, either way they never failed to greet him. He sat atop a tree stump, the garter snakes gathering around his feet.

β€œOkay, I know - you guys aren’t really here for me.” He pouted, opening the lid to the box and tossing out it’s contents. The crickets jumped in all different directions, the snakes following suit. Some lingered behind, their bellies full and preferring to linger by Vee’s side. He reached down, giving each one attention. Perlita slid down towards his hand, Vee frowning and placing her back around his neck. β€œNow, Perlita - you’ve had your turn. It’s Hattie and Frank’s turn now.”

After making sure everyone who wanted attention got it, he settled into place with his tea and book. The other fragments would often mock how he choose to spend his time in the light: mostly isolated, usually when their mind was falling asleep or waking up. It’s just when his mind lit up, there was no way of explaining it. He always enjoyed the company of snakes best. They enjoyed the stillness in his silence.

β€œVee,” His mother’s voice rang clear through her telepathic link. β€œYour breakfast will get cold soon, come home.”

Vee sighed, debating radio silence before sending back a dutiful. β€œYes, amma.”

β€œSo - what are we wearing today?” Katari asked the other fragments as she stood in front of the mirror, holding up her favorite selections. She rarely actually took any of their suggestions into account but if she played nice enough, Tanvi wouldn’t snatch a hold of the light as a way to defuse conflict.

β€œWe can change tonight before we go to the party, let’s just wear something comfy for school.” Pari said, making their arm twitch towards a cotton sweater.

β€œCome on - it’s the solstice. We have to look cute.” Katari yanked their hand back, turning back to her corner of the wardrobe. She could sense the tension in the silence, rolling her eyes as she pulled together an outfit she knew the other fragments would agree on. β€œWhat about this?”

The echoed in agreement, Katari throwing the clothes on the bed and sitting at her vanity. She supposed it was Pari’s as well - though Katari was the only one out of them who was good at make up. Opting for a simpler look to appease her other senses of self, she just put on a bit of liner and some lashes. She debated taking a stab at their hair but opted to leave it for later so it was fresh for the party, throwing it into a messy high bun instead.

She paused for a moment, sending out a few texts while she still held the light. The last text was more Pari, but Katari didn’t mind sending it on her behalf.

β€œI can’t believe you’re still making us go to classes today. I mean, it’s solstice day!” Katari complained to Tanvi, adjusting their clothes in the mirror debating between a cute boot or some oxford loafers. Just as she reached for the boot, Tanvi took hold opting for the loafers instead. Katari stumbled back into the under, grumbling the way down.

β€œIf I’m going to be walking around in the shoes all day, I’m going to pick them.” Tanvi said plainly, lacing up the shoes tight.

The sunlight didn’t usually wake Charlie, but the persistent sliver of sun falling on her face through the smallest gap in her blackout curtains was enough to rouse her that morning. Well, at first, she got to her feet and pulled the curtains shut again and went back to bed, but her brain had decided that she was awake and she wasn’t getting back to sleep, as much as she may have wished. So she got up and made her way to her tiny kitchen, putting on a pot of coffee.

Even if the solstice itself was the big event, the city tended to buzz for a day or two beforehand. And while Charlie had gotten lucky in getting the solstice itself off, she’d still been rushed off her feet the night before. It had been worth it, she’d made a significant amount in tips and she’d only had to throw out a handful of patrons. But she also had not needed the rude awakening the morning had brought.

She jumped slightly as the shadows behind her couch moved and yelled at her, before Solaris trotted into the kitchen. The cat wound herself around Charlie’s legs as Charlie measured the food out into her bowl. However, Lissie chose to ignore the food and instead sat and stared at Charlie.

β€œYou know, I’m pretty sure normal cats don’t like Fey Berries,” Charlie remarked. β€œCome on then.” She poured her cereal into her bowl and she poured milk into her cereal and coffee, before heading back into her bedroom, Lissie trotting behind her. As Charlie sat back on the bed, Lissie perched on her legs and began batting at her spoon.

By the time she’d finished her coffee, Lissie had had her few Fey Berries, and she’d read through a few pages of the research she’d found in the past few days, she was starting to feel a bit more awake and a bit better about everything. Or, at least, awake enough to take in the city for a few hours in search of vintage gems.

Jamie tended to try and sleep through the day as much as possible. It was stereotypical, he knew, but as far as he was concerned, nothing exciting ever happened in daylight. And besides, the daytime wasn’t worth the itchy, stubborn rash that came with exposure to too much sunlight. But unfortunately, as so often happened, his insomnia won out. He’d gotten three hours sleep, and apparently his body had decided that was plenty. He rolled out of bed and went to the fridge, cracking open a bottle of FauxFizz and sitting down at the desk, opening up his laptop. It was the newest DwarvenTech model; not as pretty and as streamlined as the FeyTech, but more affordable and it could better handle the heavy editing software he used.

He glanced up as his phone buzzed with a text. He smirked as he saw it was Katari.

To: katari (?)
hell yes. pre-game at mine?

The Solstice was the biggest event of the year, with the biggest parties of the year. Jamie had gotten one or two invitations to big, fancy parties, but he’d turned them down in favour of a party at Arlo’s. Sure, big parties were good for exposure and for showing off on social media, but they weren’t as fun. They were too polished, too surface-clean. And Jamie was feeling the darker side of things tonight. Just like every night.

He should have been used to working on three hours sleep, but for some reason, he still couldn’t focus on the screen for long. He had emails he needed to reply to, bookings to sort out. He groaned and ran his fingers through his hair. If he couldn’t sleep, why couldn’t he at least be fully awake? He stood up and went to the kitchen, staring into the cupboard. He was going to be responsible for at least a few hours, he told himself, if only so he could properly enjoy the party later, and so he brewed one of the teas Briar had brought him with the cheery promise of keeping him awake when he wanted to be awake. He glanced at his phone. Only a few hours until the party started, he told himself. Only a few hours to get through.

The damn bell shop was what woke him up. He’d managed to ignore the thing for the first two hours of open- it only rang once every thirty minutes that early in the morning and Eli was a heavy sleeper. Even crunched up on Vincent’s old beat up couch, Eli rarely woke up before 10am.

The large vintage-style windows were lazily drawn closed with cheap curtains, filling the small living room with that orange sort of glow that only existed before 8am. He stared into the room and inhaled deeply, the wooden floors bathed in glow and a dusty smell, the humid warmth of the books lining almost every wall striking against the bitter scent of bad coffee from downstairs. Vincent was not a clean man, but everything had its place in this small apartment. Eli’s small pile of stuff stood out strikingly against the nestled comfort of the single-room home. He’d grabbed a dark hoodie, a few changes of the same grey shirt, and an extra pair of black jeans on his mad dash to vacate his own apartment. He’d been re-wearing, re-washing, or begrudgingly borrowing the bodega owners' clothes for the majority of the month now and knew it wasn’t going to last much longer.

But he was getting clean. He still lacked the heightened senses he was used to and had yet to shift- but he no longer constantly yearned for the government-mandated oblivion of Wolfsbane. Vincent was helping with that, Eli wasn’t really sure how. He felt a difference in control when he was in the same room as the other man, like his cardigan-covered disheveled appearance somehow forced Eli’s mind out of its haze. He slipped up sometimes, slipped back into that spell that made him want to fall into his listless programming, but Vincent somehow always tugged him back.

He was hungry and that meant scavenging the remnants of last night's dinner or heading downstairs early. It wasn’t as if he was going back to sleep either way- his ears were tuned into the bustle of the street outside, hyper-fixated on the slow even sweeps of Vincent's broom. Someone was in the shop bustling around, opening fridge doors and shuffling around on a lame foot. The coffee was gurgling, meaning Vincent had already started another pot.

Blue alerted to him as soon as he walked down the stairs, the small pup’s pitter-patter across the linoleum almost enough to shove Eli’s early morning pissyness aside. He crouched and greeted the dog fully, stifling a smile at the annoyingly cute and wet kisses.

Vincent looked up at the sound of Blue’s excitement, grinning as Eli stooped down to greet him. Blue had always been a fan favorite but he’d taken a special liking to Eli early on. He’d always been a good judge of character as far as Vincent’s experiences go. Though admittedly there were other reasons Vincent had noticed Eli begin with.

β€œβ€˜Bout time,” Vincent teased. He liked to give Eli a hard time here and there but overall he’d been a pretty generous boss. The kid just needed some help that wasn’t shoving sedatives down his throat. β€œCoffee’s fresh, beer vendors get here in an hour. I had to put in an emergency order for Solstice, noticed we were running low on 40ozs.”

Eli offered a gruff grunt as a reply, standing up slowly as Blue circled his legs. He eyed the full pot of hot garbage with a look of pure disdain. No matter how much he informed Vincent he was drinking burned rabbit shit, he refused to change up his supplier or get a new machine and continued to offer a cup to Eli every morning. Eli wandered over and grabbed some jerky out of a box, the fake taste of beef and teriyaki better than nothing at the moment.

β€œI gotta turn you down for that casserole leftover,” He made brief eye contact before looking outwards through the open doorway, β€œThink the market is still open on the Solstice? You want me to grab us something?”

β€œNah, not worth it.” Vincent scoffed, blowing a bit of air out his lips as he shook his head dismissively. β€œEveryone’s scrambling over there, by the time you make it back I’ll be closing up the shop.”

He walked over to the door, glancing down either end of the street. People were starting to filter out, their body glitter still perfectly placed and drinks in hand. Half of these people leaving their houses now would end up passed out in front of his shop at some point tonight. It was always a shit show at the bodega Solstice night, but for the first time since he bought the place he planned on closing early. Let someone’s late-night craving for a wildberry fauxfizz wait until morning, he had bigger things in mind.

β€œYou ever been in the city for the Solstice? As in Midgrasp?” Vincent looked back at Eli, leaning against the doorframe behind him.

Eli followed, leaning his shoulder on the other side and peering down the same direction. β€œNo” He answered, yellow eyes following the day drinkers and oblivious bodies down the street. Eli hadn’t been around crowds in years, maybe ever. Before his capture the only reason he’d be near a crowd is if they were running and now that he’s released he avoids humans like the plague.

β€œI haven’t been in the city for Solstice for a long time” his eyes followed some elven girl as she tripped and dumped the majority of her cocktail in the bushes, the following laughter so piercing he pulled his head back inside, β€œI don’t really know what it is. An excuse to drink?”

β€œYou could say that,” Vincent laughed under his breath, he wasn’t wrong. Most of them did just use it as an excuse to drink, hard not to when the city made it an inescapable party. β€œFor magic practitioners it’s a pretty powerful day, holds a lot of significance - you know?”

Vincent didn’t make a habit of letting his powers be known. He learned it was always best to fly under the radar, but he didn’t mind helping those he could with it in the meantime. Admittedly he wasn’t sure how Eli hadn’t caught on yet, though he supposed the lingering effects of withdrawal didn’t make him too on the ball.

β€œIf you know where to go, there’s actually some cool little spots that do something special for Solstice. They’re a little more low key so they don’t get as crowded as the rest of the city.” Vincent looked over at Eli with a raise of his eyebrows. He knew the werewolf was still wary about crowds, but Vincent had a way about him that made others at ease regardless of circumstance. A natural charisma some would say.

β€œI assumed you were hunkering down if you were closing early” Eli fully turned towards Vincent now- the shop owner rarely strayed far from his apartment and work, a steadfast presence on the block. Eli grown used to the routine. He’d also planned to hide upstairs from the all-night party, but if Vincent wanted him to go… β€œAre you saying β€˜something special’ like magic?”

Vincent shrugged, rubbing his hands together as he suppressed a smirk. It was true he wasn’t really one to go out, especially not when the streets were flooded with dumb asses - but he was ready for something new. Clasping a hand on Eli’s shoulder, he gave it a reassuring squeeze the werewolves muscles taut beneath his fingers.

β€œEli, you are in Midgrasp. Where isn’t there magic?”

After arriving late into the city the night before, Iris had ended up going to a bar for some shots. She wasn’t normally the type to just spontaneously party or drink, but after the rough day she had with losing some of the animals, she just wanted to get out of her funk. Part of her just needed some distraction to take her mind off of it. She didn’t want to reach out to her friends because she didn’t need the β€˜you’re amazing’ and the β€˜you will save them next time.’ All she really needed was some good old-fashioned fun.

Which undoubtedly she could invite Briar, Pari or Jamie, but part of her just wanted to immerse herself with strangers and people who didn’t know her, so she could just do whatever she wanted without someone to remind her in the morning.

The shots at the bar turned into her walking across the street to the club. The club was where she danced most of the night away and drinking. She doesn’t recall much else of the night.

So when her eyes finally fluttered open with it feeling as though someone was strangling her brain she slowly realized she wasn’t in her own apartment. Her eyes went wide for a second and she was afraid to turn over to see who it was. Slowly she began to pull the blanket off of her and gently beside her as she tried to get up without waking up whoever was next to her.

It took awhile, but the blonde had managed to get out of bed and was tip toeing around the room trying to find her clothes, but all she could really find was her dress. Regardless, she slipped it on and she began to walk out the bedroom door. The snores were still audible by the guy in the bed next to her, good she thought as she headed towards the bathroom to fix her hair up a little bit and after found her purse.

Just as she was about to leave with her heels in hand ready for her walk of shame moment the guy spoke up.

---

When she finally got to her apartment she locked the door behind her and threw her keys and purse on the table beside the door and dropped her heels to the floor.

Grabbing water and some ibuprofen she collapsed onto her couch taking both the pills and the water, before slipping into a slumber.

She woke up to the little ding on her phone, it was a message from Pari asking if she were back in town yet. Her eyes struggled to focus on the bright screen as she tried to hit the right buttons to reply back to her friend.

β€œGot in late, went to a bar, SOS.” It wasn’t that coherent, but she did manage to insert the crying laughing emoji before she plopped her phone on her stomach. She probably needed to eat something, but that would be a later issue when she decided to get up off the couch.
