Once, a very long time ago, humans knew about demons, about otherworldly creatures who lurk in the darkness and prey upon the weak. They fought the demons, relying not only upon spiritual powers, but upon gifts bestowed upon special humans. Eventually, those gifted humans banded together and formed a group, naming themselves ‘The Guardians.’ Even now, when demons are believed to be creatures of myth and legend, The Guardians exist, living in the shadows, where the rest of the world can’t find them. And every year, more youth are inducted into The Guardians to help protect the rest of the world.

Not anyone can be a Guardian. It takes a strong mind, body, and soul to accept the powers that all Guardians have. A special ritual places a mark upon their body, which imbues them with their powers. It looks a lot like a tattoo, and always takes the form of a dragon. The actual mark each Guardian receives is unique, and it can appear anywhere on their body. The mark bestows the bearer with powers and abilities that help them to fight the demons, not only increasing their physical strength, speed, and senses, but also helping to heal them when they are injured. The mark also ties someone into The Guardians- once you bear it, you can never leave. This is not only a rule, but a magical compulsion it is impossible to resist. The compulsion also prevents bearers from telling normal humans about the secrets hiding in the shadows- both the existence of the demons, and of The Guardians themselves. If someone who is not strong enough is put through the ritual, it will burn them up and kill them. They have found that people between the age of seventeen and twenty-one are the most likely to survive the ritual, and for that reason, the ritual is only preformed upon people within that age range. The actual ritual is shrouded in mystery, and no one actually remembers what happened- just the feeling of pain.

Guardians who have just received their marks are not, however, immediately ready to journey out into the world and begin killing demons. Adversaries as strong as the ones they face require both strength and skill, and thus, the newly marked Guardians are enrolled in Greenwoods Prep, a private school hidden from the rest of the world. There they are taught how to use their powers and fight demons. Once enrolled in Greenwoods Prep, however, you aren’t allowed to contact your family, and even they don’t know exactly where you are. Sometimes the family doesn’t even know that you were taken.

The School:

Greenwoods Prep is a school where people are trained to become Guardians. Though most of the student body is comprised of those who have been taken from the general human population, it is also home to some students who were born into The Guardians and have been training their whole life to fight demons. Students are divided into four classes, and stay there for at least four years, though some have stayed longer. Age is not necessarily an indication of the student’s year- students can be as young as seventeen or as old as twenty-one when starting their first year. Once they graduate, they are assigned to a group which will then hunt down demons in the real world. Few students contact their families after graduation- the time gone is too long, and they are a part of a world their family could never understand.

Greenwoods Prep functions like a year-round boarding school, with various short breaks throughout the year when born Guardians may go home. Those who have been brought into this life are not allowed to leave, however, and may not contact their families while they are at the school. Students are given their own dorm room in one of the two dorm buildings, which are all same-sex. Curfew begins are 9, and all students must be in their building by then. Romantic interactions are discouraged, but they can’t be entirely prevented. After all, you’re teaching students to fight- they are certainly capable of climbing through windows by their second semester.

While students are not required to wear a uniform, the clothing choices are…limited. A nearby town, run mostly by Guardians, provides the only shopping opportunities. Most of the business in town are owned by retired or crippled Guardians, and it’s a haven for Guardian families. It’s still a relatively small town, with no chain stores or restaurants. Privileged students are occasionally allowed to go there on weekends, and other students may only go in groups monitored by a teacher. All students are given a sort of allowance for food, toiletries, and other necessities. The allowance is adjusted according to your school performance.

While Greenwoods Prep is extremely strict, students do have fun there. If the allure of various martial arts classes isn’t enough, there are also various after school activities, which, honestly, probably don't actually help tempt students into enrolling. You can take advantage of the spacious grounds, the lounges in the dorm buildings, which are stocked with movies, cable tv, video games, board games, and lots of comfy chairs. There are also training rooms, open 24-7, where you can practice fighting, or use the weight machines. The school itself is huge, and that's not including the dorm buildings and teacher housing. All in all, it’s not a terrible school, and it functions as needed- turning out strong graduates who can defend the human race.

The Characters:

Boy One: A born Guardian, he received his mark as soon as he turned seventeen, and was enrolled in Greenwoods Prep. Now nineteen, he is just starting his third year. Fighting demons is all he’s ever wanted to do. His father is on the Council, which gives him a high social standing among his peers. Having such a powerful father is not always easy, however, and he’s felt the pressure to succeed his entire life. Failure is not an option, and he must be at the head of his class in everything. This means he has little time for dating, though, as an attractive and skilled student, he’s had more than a few girls after him. Up until now, he’s always ignored them.
Relationships: Friends with Girl One and Girl Two, tutoring Girl Four, used to tutor Girl Two
Guardian Mark Location: full back
Status: taken

Boy Two: Nineteen years old, he enrolled at age seventeen and is in his second year. He believes firmly in The Guardian’s mission. Boy Two grew up watching his mother get knocked around by a human monster, and now wants to learn as much as he can to protect people from otherworldly ones. He wants to protect the weak more than anything, and is very kind. He’s afraid to get close to anyone romantically, though, and keeps even his friends at a bit of a distance. He doesn’t trust himself and is always afraid that he might turn out like his father. He feels sympathetic for the first years, who are often disoriented, and always tries to help them out. When he encounters Girl Three, he decides to help her make friends. Will it turn into something more?
Relationships: Friends with Boy Four
Guardian Mark location: left shoulder
Status: taken

Boy Three: He has just enrolled in Greenwoods Prep, and at nineteen, will be old for a first year. Two years ago his childhood friend (Girl Two) disappeared and was never found. He hasn’t gotten close to anyone since then, and believes her to be dead. This has made him extremely motivated to protect others, and he started taking martial arts just after she disappeared. Since she disappeared he has struggled with his temper, and slight depression. When he was offered the chance to enroll in Greenwoods Prep, he took it so that he could become stronger. His entire world is about to change, though, when he discovers the one person he never expected to see again is still alive at Greenwoods Prep. Although he's reserved, he's a genuinely good person. Since he has some martial arts training, he'll probably be one of the best fighters in his class.
Relationships: Childhood friends with Girl Two
Guardian Mark Location: Above his heart
Status: reserved

Boy Four: He and his twin sister (Girl Four) enrolled together two years ago, and are now nineteen years old and in their second year. Boy Four is close with his sister, and very protective of her. He's extremely charismatic and one of the most popular students at the school. He's arrogant and proud, but maybe he does have reason to be- not only is he handsome and popular, he's a decent student. He's had flings with several girls in school, and doesn't seem to care how many hearts he breaks. Last year he was involved with Girl One, though he broke it off after a few weeks. He’s been flirting with Girl Two recently, but when no one is looking, he finds himself staring at Girl One again.
Relationships: Brother of Girl Four, dated Girl One, flirts with Girl Two
Guardian Mark Location: left shoulder blade
Status: reserved

Girl One: She was born into The Guardians, and received her mark at age seventeen. She is now nineteen and in her second year. She’s always been flirty and fun-loving, but when it comes to hunting demons, she’s deadly serious. Her mother was badly injured in a demon attack several years ago, and was paralyzed from her injuries. A few months after, she died from her injuries. Girl One has never really gotten over that. Now, she hates them more than most, and wants to destroy them. She can’t wait to begin killing them in the real world. She tends to be reckless when it comes to fighting. Last year she dated Boy Four for a while, but he broke it off. Outwardly, she seems to hate his guts, but who knows how she really feels?
Relationships: Dated Boy Four, friends with Girl Four
Guardian Mark Location: lower back
Status: reserved

Girl Two: In her third year, Girl Two is nineteen years old and was initiated when she was seventeen. She joined The Guardians after she was attacked and nearly killed by a demon. She woke up with the mark of The Guardians on her, and was enrolled in Greenwoods Prep without her consent. Receiving the mark saved her life, and she is now grateful to The Guardians and determined to protect all of humanity. She was never allowed to contact anyone from her past, which made her depressed for a while. She left behind her family and her boyfriend (Boy Three) of several years, who had been her closest friend through her childhood. She became friends with Boy One, who helped her cope with loosing everyone she cares about. Though she struggled with making friends and opening up to people, she’s finally made peace with what happened, and decided to move on with her life.
Relationships: Dated Boy Three, friends with Boy One, flirts with Boy Four
Guardian Mark Location: full right arm
Status: taken

Girl Three: Eighteen years old and just starting her first year, she enrolled in Greenwoods Prep because of the lure of getting super powers. A self-proclaimed geek, she loves comics and superheroes and fantasy novels. She’s rather shy and has a hard time making friends. Before coming to Greenwoods Prep, she lived with her aunt and uncle. They weren’t very well off, and she hopes her leaving will have made things easier on them. She just told them that she was going to boarding school.
Relationships: none yet
Guardian Mark Location: upper center of chest, just beneath the collarbone
Status: taken

Girl Four: She’s nineteen years old and in her second year, Boy Four’s twin. She’s always been close to her brother, as he was the only constant family member she had after their mother walked out on them when they were fifteen. They got shuffled from family member to family member after that, changing schools often. Four years later they enrolled in Greenwoods Prep. Like her brother, she's popular and charismatic, and she's also kind of a party girl. Its rare to ever see her alone, and is almost always surrounded by friends. She's had several boyfriends during her years at the school, but just had a nasty breakup with her latest partner. Maybe since she's always so busy with her friends, she struggles in the physical classes at Greenwoods Prep. This year, she’s being tutored by one of the top students in martial arts- Boy One. With meetings every other day, they’ll be spending a lot of time together.
Relationships: Friends with Girl One, sister of Boy Four
Guardian Mark Location: right shoulder blade
Status: reserved

Full Name: First and last
Nickname: If applicable
Age: Given in description
Class: First year, second year, etc.  Given in description
Role: Boy One, Two, etc.
Appearance: Insert at least one picture here, please, as well as at least a paragraph describing their physical appearance.  This not only means hair color, eye color, and build, but also what they like to wear.  How do they do their hair?  Do they wear makeup?  How do they carry themselves?  Is there something that they never go without?  Also, where is their Guardian mark, and what does it look like?  Feel free to add in a picture, but it’s not necessary.  Just describe it.
History: Three paragraphs, minimum.  Discuss how your character got to be the way they are.  Talk about your character’s traits, too.  Why are they insecure?  Did someone leave them when they were young?  And I really want to see detail here- it shows me that you actually thought about your character.
Fears: What’s your character’s greatest fear?  An answer like ‘spiders’ is not acceptable!  Are they afraid of failing?  Of dying?  Why are they afraid of that?
Personality: I’d like two paragraphs or more here!  Add in the little things that make them more realistic, and not a boring stereotype.  Everyone has flaws- and I don't mean, "She tends to fall down a lot."  That's a lame flaw.
Love interest: If you have one.  If the relationship is complicated, or there are multiple, give us a sentence or two explaining what’s going on in their head.
Other: If you desire to add anything else.

Toggle Rules

1. This is a literate roleplay, and by literate, I mean 4+ paragraphs per post and good character development.

2. For the love of all that is holy, no Mary Sues.

3. Grammer, punctuation, no text speak...yeah, that should have been obvious from Rule 1, but there you go.

4. PG-13! Moderate violence is allowed (I almost typed moderate violas...), and obviously, romance is encouraged! But if the clothes are gonna come off, fade to black, or time skip, or whatever- just don't tell the rest of the world! And please limit swearing. Some is fine, but don't get excessive.

5. Just...follow the basic rules that pretty much every roleplay has, use your common sense, and be a nice person!

Soft insistent beeping woke Ari from her sleep, growing steadily louder and prompting her to roll from her bed, completely awake and shaking off the dreams that haunted her sleep. Once she would have hit snooze, and stayed in bed until the last possible moment, rising sluggishly to stumble through her morning routine. Now, though, sleep wasn’t necessarily a haven, and those long minutes half-awake in bed would be torture rather than a treat. So she rose early, even during break, and prayed that she wouldn’t remember her dreams.

Leaving her bedding askew, she padded down the hallway to the bathroom. Someone was already showering, steam swirling in the fluorescent lights and warming the entire room. Looking into the mirror, Ari bit back a curse. Sleep had not been kind to her hair, which was smooshed flat on one side and stood straight up on the other. She ignored it as she splashed water on her face and brushed her teeth, knowing that struggling with it was futile. Only several long minutes spent with a comb and hairdryer would force it into some semblance of order.

Back in her room, she forced her hair to behave. On a school day, she would have just pulled it back, but with so much free time, she might as well spend extra minutes getting ready. So she tamed it into haphazard waves and left it down, taking the time to make sure none of it was sticking up in the back, as it was wont to do. That didn’t mean that she spent any extra time on her wardrobe, however, as she tugged on worn jeans and a dark t-shirt, leaving her arms bare. It was warm out, and she meant to enjoy the weather while she could. Soon, hoodies and coats would be the norm.

Looking out her window, she smiled. Her room faced the courtyard, and she could see other early risers already heading towards breakfast, and returning students heading the opposite way, lugging heavy bags as they moved back in. Students would be arriving all day, returners dropped off by parents or friends, newly marked first years carted there by bright yellow school buses, laughably mundane when they pulled up to the grand old buildings of Greenwoods Prep.

Finally ready, Ari left her room, greeting her hall mates as she clattered down the stairs and exited the building, joining the crowd heading towards the main academic building and breakfast. Breathing in the fresh morning air deeply, Ari stretched her arms out wide, happy to be alive. The sky was bright blue, the shadows of night chased away by the rapidly climbing sun, and the buildings fairly gleamed in the light, appearing for all the world like any other boarding school. The air was fresh and pure, far away from the smog of the big cities, and everything seemed more real and alive.

The cafeteria was already busy, the hum of conversation and clinking of utensils filling the air. The scent of French toast wafted through the air, making Ari’s mouth water, and she beelined towards the source of the scent, piling her plate high with the thick slices and drowning the whole thing in maple syrup. Grabbing an apple and utensils, she turned towards the tables, claiming a seat at the end of one of the long wooden benches and delving into her meal with gusto. One of the other students sitting nearby greeted her, and she waved, her mouth already full and preventing a proper greeting. Food took precedence over social niceties, especially when one burned as many calories as the students at Greenwoods Prep did. Smiling, she turned her attention back to her plate, focusing on it with an intensity normally associated with tests and homework, rather than food.

Quinton Ross

If one was to walk through the halls of the male dorm room, it would've definitely contrasted with the females. While most girls were up early and prettying themselves for the rest of the day and applying their daily cover up, the boys side was quite the opposite. Down the corridor, though the occasional early bird and those who have yet to catch a wink of sleep or who had pulled all-nighters to savor the last day of break, the atmosphere was filled with grunting snores and fence-hopping sheep. And Quinton wasn't part of the morning-risers. Just a couple of hours ago he was goofing around with Drew and stuffing his stomach full of food that would make a fat man on the Biggest Loser loose control. Curled into a fetal position within the comfy shell of duvet covers, the teen slept with a pack of opened skittles that had spilled; still in his hand, popcorn strewn about his frizzed hair, and another boy draped over the edge of his bed looking just as sloppy.

A deep groan vibrating from his throat as he rolled over to find a slightly more comfortable position, he immediately shot up and began to scream and kick like a maniac as shots were fired from wherever direction they were coming from. Prancing around like a little girl scared of bugs as he jigged and shrieked in unison, his frantic dance was cut off after tripping over the body at the foot of the mattress. Landing on a pyramid of unfinished chip bags and candy wrappers, he clutched his chest wide-eyed then burst into laughter shortly after as he stared into the flat screen tv to see that they had accidentally fallen asleep while playing a game of Call of Duty with the volume close to fifty. Dusting himself off a bit and chucking the controller off the bed just in case Drew decided to move around, he waddled cumbersomely for the bathroom, scratching his head all the way there. Loosening his sweats with one hand, he released a bothersome load from drinking way too much pop last night, while brushing his teeth with the other.

Following a quick shower, he threw on some fresh clothes, applied some dryer sheet smelling deodorant on, and plopped down on a Papasan chair or as Quinton likes to call it, his 'Gaming Zone'. Hoping he didn't stir Drew too much, which he was sure he had already done with his earlier scenario, he slipped on a pair of headsets and fired away on his Xbox controller for a bit. Seeing as his friend didn't seem to be getting up anytime soon, he quit with the joysticks to flush out the junk from his system by heading for the Main Building. He gave Drew's butt a playful kick on the way out and hollered loud enough, "Going out for breakfast!", before strolling out the door and across the courtyard.

Grinning his entire way there, it masked his envy for those who had the chance to go visit their families over the break. Once again, the authorities didn't let him go out to see Suran for the vacation off and it confused him greatly, but he didn't want to be more of a bother to the ones who had saved him and his loved one. Making sure he piled on some healthy greens and fruits, he took a seat beside no one in particular as he ate his salad in a mannerly fashion. His eyes quickly landing on the girl sitting just a few meters away from him, he chuckled a bit to himself as her way of eating seemed utterly differentiating from how he had been. Popping a mini tomato into his mouth, he observed her amused as he chewed on the sweet veggie.

The whole place seemed so terrifyingly normal.

Four days. Four days since Walker had felt the brand cast into his chest, since he'd fought that thing. It had been strong, that was certain - nearly too strong. Were it not for that woman's intervention...

No matter. He was here now. That was what he had to focus on. He surveyed his surroundings as he stepped off the bus, taking in every detail; the massive, archaic building in front of him, the tall gates behind him, and the seemingly-endless forests surrounding the campus. Older students clad in what appeared to be casual clothes walked the grounds; he caught a few glimpses of dragon tattoos like his own on arms, legs, necks.

He'd been briefed on the way here. 'The Guardians'. An ancient order of demon-slayers. He'd never have believed it for a second if he hadn't fought one of the demons himself. As it was, this was just another way to serve humanity - the best he had, now that he was marked.

He turned, his coat flaring around his feet as he faced the other First Year students getting off the bus. He considered every one of them automatically, checking them for physical build and combat capabilities. He had no intention of hurting them, or even getting into some kind of confrontation. It was just automatic now.

“Ahhh---wha--I’m up, I’m up,” Drew startled awake, his heart racing as sounds of explosives and guns ripped through his dreams. Drew blinked the sleep away from his eyes trying to comprehend the scene in front of him before a very large object toppled over and off of him. Laughter exploded through the room and Drew groaned, “Quuuuiiiiinnnnnnnnn.”

Rolling over onto his stomach and sprawling out, Drew mumbled into the mattress, “It’s too early,” before promptly dozing off again oblivious to his roommate’s noise or routine. They had been up till the wee hours of the morning playing COD and eating junk food to commemorate the last night of break. Drew knew he’d regret it in the morning, but it was his rest day from his morning workout so he didn't really have any important reason to be up…besides, ya know, school. So, he was enjoying dreamland guilt free. That is until he got a swift kick in the butt and Quinn called that he was going down to breakfast. A noise came out of Drew that could have been a protest to the butt-abuse, but it was unintelligible muffled by the mattress and skittles wrapper that was now stuck to his face.

Drew pulled the sticky wrapper off his face with a comical grimace before hoisting himself off the bed into standing position. Having successfully gotten his arse up, he grabbed a towel and stumbled towards the bathroom to shower. There was no way he could go anywhere without getting clean first. He wouldn't be surprised if there was congealed candy stuck in his hair.

Hopping in the shower, he winced as the freezing water forced him awake. He usually made himself take cold showers so he didn't spend forever under the stream of relaxing, warm water, but that morning it was especially brutal. Quickly washing his hair and cleaning all the necessary bits of him, he jumped out shivering. He really needed to figure out a better morning routine, but cold showers were the only thing besides working out that would get him awake. If he let himself go, he’d sleep into the early afternoon with no trouble at all. Hurrying back to the room, he pulled on a pair of fitted, dark-wash jeans, a light blue t-shirt, and his trusty brown tennis shoes going for the usual look as he surveyed the damage they had done to the room.

Chip bags and empty candy wrappers littered the ground, popcorn was strewn everywhere because they had been practicing throwing the kernels into each other’s mouths, and Quinn’s mattress had partially fallen off the bed-frame from the morning ruckus. It was bad…but not that bad. Drew mentally shrugged. They could clean it up later, he thought, before kicking an empty pop bottle on his way out the door.

Walking to the main building, a lot of people were already moving back in. There were students of various ages and put togetherness struggling to get their luggage into the dorms. Some were still saying goodbye to their families by the cars. There was even a girl who was crying as her parents sympathetically hugged her goodbye. Drew pointedly averted his gaze. Must be nice to have parents that molly-coddle you, he thought condescendingly not able to stop the bitter comment from entering his mind. It wasn't the girl’s fault she had two loving parents, but it also wasn't Drew’s fault that his dad was dead and his mother didn't care about him and Ellie. No…no one’s fault really. Only proof that life doesn't give a rat’s-ass about anyone and it’ll beat you down and build you up without a second’s thought. There was neither rhyme nor reason to why bad things happened to good people and why some had it easy. All Drew knew was that the strong survived living off the weak, and he was determined to be part of the strong. Ellie, Quinn, and Drew, they were survivors, and there’d be Hell to pay before he let anyone tear them down.

Walking into the cafeteria, the smell of food swept away any remnants of a bad mood that may have been forming. Drew started salivating as he looked at the buffet open before him. If there was anything really great about Greenwoods Prep, it’d have to be the food. It was all you can eat, and there was always a delicious variety. You could never get tired of it.

Drew piled his plate high with eggs, bacon, and steamed mushrooms (got to get those veggies in, right?) and filled a huge glass with milk before spying Quinn who was seated at a table where Ari was at the other end. It didn't look like they were talking…oh that’s right. Drew forgot that Ari and Quinn didn't know each other. Sometimes he forgot who knew who. He just assumed all his friends knew each other. Looking around, he didn't see Ellie anywhere. She was probably still asleep in those ridiculous sheep pajama bottoms, Drew thought with a smile. Well, he guessed he would catch up with her later as he headed over to where Quinn was sitting.

Plopping his tray on the table and sitting down across from Quinn, he winked at Ari who was a meter or so down the table, “Morning Ari,” he said with a grin. “Quinn, Ari. Ari, Quinn.” He gestured doing casual introductions. He started digging into his food while any greetings or casual conversation might happen between Quinn and Ari, before he would look at Quinn’s plate in mock horror. “You’re going to be starving by lunch,” Drew said pointing at Quinn’s salad with his fork. ”Ari’s got the right idea,” Drew continued smiling at Ari and her partially demolished plate of French toast. Taking a bite of his bacon with relish, he swallowed before quipping, “Got to get in those carbs and protein.”

Deep Slumber

Eve walked around a bit, she wasn't sure what exactly she was looking for. She had on her attire of black pants, and a white tank-top. She had everything else that she needed to have and she was lurking in the dark shadows. She could hear sounds and her head whipped around looking for it. Her squad members were gone and she was alone in the shadows. She was a little confused as to what was happening. She struggled to see anything and she continued walking in the shadows, this was her job and she had to do it well. She wanted to find these bastards now more than ever, they caused her family to break apart, how could she let them get away with it?

Sighing she silently crept forward, thinking and using the skills she had learned in school. She was busy trying to keep calm and not letting her anger levels rise, she also was trying to contain her fear as best as she could. Exhaling once more she kept on walking and she could hear her steps echo, it was almost if time had frozen itself. Only person moving was her, everything was too still and too quiet, and she knew something was up. She quickened her pace a bit more until she came to a sudden halt. There was a man standing in front of her, it was her father. "Daddy?" She called out confused and she stared at him and he wouldn't speak. "Speak to me!" She shouted at him. Why was he out? She was confused and wanted to know what was going on. Instead he just came closer to her.

As he took a step forward, she took one back and she stared at him, keeping her wits about her. "What are you doing here?" She asked and she was waiting for him to respond but nothing would come out of his mouth. Her father soon opened his mouth and shrieking came out and dark shadows came flying out and began to chase her. She knew she couldn't just fight them right there and then so she ran and sprinted down the cobble stone and gripped her weapon and she took a sharp turn. She could feel her heart pounding as she continued to run, this was just a normal dream and it was real, but then why did it feel so real? Caught up in her thoughts she tripped and collided with the ground.

Her heard was pounding more than it had been before and she struggled to get up right away but she got up and just as she was about to sprint again it was to late, and they had grasped her ankle and she began to thrash around trying to get the demon to let go, she heard the beast screech a bit and soon she had began to start screaming herself as she had been dragged off.

In a new light she was strapped down and all her weapons were stripped of her. She saw a guy in a suit and she struggled against her bonds. "Let me out!" She snapped at the thing but she could only hear snickering and that's when the torturing began to happen again. She's had this dream before, and it happens the same way every time, it made her fear more dark and more real each time. She couldn't stop the tears that had been streaming down her face.

Morning Rises

Startled Evangeline woke and sat up quickly right away. She had tears streaming down her face and sweat on her forehead and she was breathing heavily. She hated her nightmares but she couldn't stop them when they happened. She took a shaky breath in. This was why she couldn't have a roommate. She would wake them up all the time without meaning to. Sitting there for awhile to collect her thoughts she calmed down a bit and then she began to pull her covers back and swung her legs out of bed.

Her feet hit the floor and she grabbed a pair of of jeans, as much as she hated them sometimes they would be fine when she didn't have to do any training right away. Instead she had promised to help with the orientation and so she picked out a plain white t-shirt and a blue hoodie. She grabbed her clothes she was going to wear and she headed to the bathroom. She turned on the water for the shower and she waited for the water to get warm. Soon she let the water surround her as she ran her hands through her hair to get it wet so she could shampoo it. Showers were where she could think and just let everything go. She had to put on her brave face again. She had to push all fears out and all emotions out, save for the good ones.

She got out of the shower and she grabbed the towel and she began to dry herself off and then wrapped her hair up in the towel and she walked back to her room with her clothes. She put on her bra and her underwear and then quickly pulled on her jeans and her shirt. After that she went over and she began to blow dry her hair until it was nice and dry and better to put up in a pony tail. Eve grabbed her hoodie and she she slipped it on as well as her socks and shoes and then she went out the door.

Evie went down to breakfast and she sat there with her waffles and apple juice. She wasn't too hungry and she was already running a tad bit late but the first bus wouldn't be here for a little while longer so she calmed down and she just decided to relax and keep things calm. She was really hoping in helping with orientation today she wouldn't have to see Drew. He was the last person she wanted to see.

Ethan Barrett

"Are you falling asleep again, Ethan?" His fathers voice snapped, jerking the boy awake. From the corner of his eye he could see the man with a scowl on his face as he drove the car. Apparently the need to sleep was one of the many things that were unacceptable.
Ethan let out a sigh and lifted his head away from the window, "No." he replied, stifling back a yawn.
Mr. Barrett narrowed his eyes, "How late did you stay up last night?"
"Not very late." Ethan lied, scratching at an itch on his cheek, "Eleven, I think. I was studying." Or three in the morning wasting time, give or take an hour or so. He had spent his last night of near freedom playing video games, watching TV, and basically trying to cram in everything he had missed while under his fathers watchful eye.
He was exhausted.

Mr. Barrett snorted, "What if we were attacked right now? What would you do?" he questioned, glancing at his son as the car pulled in to Greenwoods. Ethan shot a look at him, "Why would-"
"You'd get yourself killed because you too tired to pay attention, that's what would happen." Mr. Barrett snapped as he parked the car, "Eleven is too late, you knew you would have to be up early in the morning. This is why I don't leave you on your own very often, Ethan, you're irresponsible. One night by yourself at look at you!"
At those words, Ethan wanted to laugh. He didn't, obviously, but he wanted to. Irresponsible? Was that what his father thought of him now? After just one little thing-which really wasn't even that bad-, Irresponsible the the title that he deserved. Of course. Ethan wanted to remind him that he wasn't exactly 'picture perfect' either.
"You're right. I'm sorry." Ethan apologized, nodding his head in false agreement, "I should have been smarter about that."
"Good. Now get out of the car, grab your bags from the trunk, and go."
Ethan didn't know why he hadn't expected that. No goodbyes, no 'Hope things go well for you!', not anything. Just 'I don't want to talk to you anymore, get your stuff and leave.' Not once throughout his entire time spent at home had he heard something even slightly similar to 'I'm proud of you, son.' from his father, and he certainly wasn't hearing it now.
Better... he just had to be better if he wanted to hear approval.

One thing that Ethan openly didn't appreciate? Having to drag his luggage all the way to his dorm. One suitcase and two bags weren't really much, but hauling the suitcase in one hand, one bag in the other, and struggling to not drop the second wasn't much fun.
School wasn't supposed to be fun though, so as far as Ethan was concerned, it was annoying but okay. He'd be cooped up in the classrooms and his dorm again, he'd have his eyes glued to textbooks half the time, and he'd pull countless all-nighters in attempt to rush in last minute studying. A social life? Who needed it?
Ah... it was nice to be back.

When he got to his dorm room door, Ethan juggled with his keys for a bit until he finally found the right one. When that was over and done with, the boy took in a deep breath of relief as he swung open the door. The walls were bare, the floor was spotless, and everything seemed to be just the way he always had it. Completely and utterly boring.
Ethan dumped his two bags down on his bed and rolled his suitcase into the closet. He'd unpack later, rehanging his clothes and stocking the shelves with all his books again, but right now... well, getting out and actually doing something would probably ease his constantly busy mind.

Feeling eyes on her, Ari’s gaze rose and met that of a boy she recognized, but didn’t personally know. He was smirking a bit, and she flushed slightly, aware that she was far from acting decorously at the moment. Raising her chin defiantly, she gestured to a group of boys sitting farther down in the hall, at a back table. “At least I’m not like them,” she said, as one of them gestured rudely with a banana and another laughed, flecks of chocolate covered donut visible in his mouth even from that distance. Shuddering, she took another, slightly smaller, bite.

As she ate, Drew took a seat across from the unknown kid, greeting her with a smile and prompting another slight flush, though it wasn’t enough to be noticeable. “Hey, Drew,” she replied to his greeting, and nodded to Quinn as they were introduced. Even if he has seen her eating like a starved idiot, she might as well be polite.

“You’re going to be starving by lunch,” Drew informed Quinn, and Ari smiled, her merriment remaining as he added, “Ari’s got the right idea. Got to get in those carbs and protein.”

“Especially when you’re helping the first years,” Ari added, finishing off the last of her monster breakfast. “Speaking of, I should probably get going. Going to be a long day hauling luggage.” The school policy on moving in was a much hated one, and much debated during the first few days of school. She stood and grabbed her plate, smiling over her shoulder and saying, “Bye, Drew! I’ll see you guys around!” She dropped her dirty dishes in the dish window, pocketing the apple for later, and hurried out of the cafeteria, dodging a group of giggling girls on the way. She hit the main foyer, with its grand staircase and dragon-motif banners, in record time. A fellow orientation volunteer waved her over.

“They just went into the lecture hall,” she explained, and Ari rolled her eyes. So they’d have to sit around and wait for at least half an hour for Headmaster William’s lame, ‘welcome to the Guardians’ speech and for the first students to get their schedules, room assignments, and keys. Even then, they wouldn’t all come out at once, but in a trickle. And as new students arrived, the mayhem would reach ridiculous levels. “You’d think that they’d figure out a better system by now,” Ari joked, taking a seat on the stairs with the others.

Continuing to keep his entertained gaze on the seemingly starved girl whilst he regularly placed lettuce leaves into his empty mouth, it only took seconds until the figure slowed down a bit, paused, and in a matter of milliseconds looking up at him before he had the chance to react and turn his pupils away to avoid the predicted eye contact. Momentarily pausing his chewing jaw to await her reaction, he noticed her cheeks swarm with a slightly redder shade, but not being able to fully comprehend why, he assumed that it was caused by the morning warmth. “At least I’m not like them”, she flicked her head towards the father side of the cafeteria and it only took the sound of obnoxious laughter for him to picture how much worse the scene was compared to her. A light shudder, she took in another spoonful, but this time at a more cautious pace. Speaking of which, he realized he and Drew didn't look too different from those boys just last night. Worse, even...

It wasn't too long after til he heard a clattering of a plate just in front of him while he had his head down trying to fork a slippery tomato.

“Morning Ari! Quinn, Ari. Ari, Quinn.” And he was off chowing down on a pile of eggs, strips of crisp bacon, and mushrooms.

"Ha-hah!", he exclaimed as he finally tamed the plump red vegetable in triumph. "Hmm?", he glanced up just in time to catch him winking at her, Quinn rolled his eyes. She was one of his girls again, and if she wasn't, then she would be added to the list pretty soon.

“You’re going to be starving by lunch. Ari’s got the right idea. Got to get in those carbs and protein.” His suggestion was accurate indeed and the thought prompted him to oogle his plate with a decisive expression.

“Especially when you’re helping the first years. Speaking of, I should probably get going. Going to be a long day hauling luggage. Bye, Drew! I’ll see you guys around!” It didn't come as a surprise as she had already been there before the two of them and taking into account the speed at which she had been devouring her breakfast, she probably hadn't spent more than fifteen minutes sitting there.

Surveying her to make sure she was out of earshot and out of the hall, he picked up his dish and scurried around the table, scooting in right beside Drew and elbowing his ribs. "Man oh man.. she seems nice. But she's poking at the ~danger zone~," he chanted the last pair of words in a sing-songish tune. He paused and added in some finger-jutting action towards his buddy's plate before stealing a couple of slices of bacon from his platter and stuffing the ends into his own mouth. "I'll probably see her later. I'm volunteering to help out the First Years too." The words were muffled by a mouth full of leaves and equal amounts of jacked pan-fried pig.

Rose grabbed her bags, throwing a huge duffle bag over her shoulders and grabbing quite a large luggage that not only had another bag hanging off of it but was just barley holding a some laptop case filled with comic books and a couple games that she tucked in just in case they didn't have the video games that she wanted to play. The only thing she was extremely worried about was that they wouldn't have any video game systems and bringing the games would be a big waste. Not only that but there was a possibly that Rose would go into video game withdrawal or something like that. Walking with a comic book in hand was a terrible idea when it came to this clumsy girl especially when she was reading and walking at the same time. Rose grumbled hearing a girl tell her to put it away because she was going to hurt herself or was going to accidentally run into someone. The girl reading the comic waited, reading the page that she was on before stopping, marking her spot, and finally closing the book. Throwing a glance in the same girl's direction and narrowing her eyes ever so slightly. No one should ever get in between her and her comics but that girl didn't know that so after a minute she looked away and started walking again until someone greeted her and gave her the run through. The girl went through the orientation and then practically just disappeared as she hurried away with a: "You can look around now, the building is that way and don't worry there are signs to lead you around. If you need help find people who have gone to this school before to help you!"

After the lecture/orientation she left she lecture hall, walking right into where she was supposed to go. Glancing down at a sheet of paper resting on her comic that was in her hand she took a good look at it then decided just to go to her dorm. Was letting things just settle down a little a good idea? She didn't know nor did she care right now. She was going to finish her comic then go look for any kind of game system so that she could play Halo or something. Rose went straight to her room, bumping into a couple walls, tripping over her luggage every now and then but soon enough she made it to her dorm. Once there she went in to the dorm, leaving the door wide open as she set everything up. Posters of super hero's splayed above her bed, super hero bed set and everything was like a superhero thing. She left her clothes alone and sat on her bed, reading the same comic book that she had been reading when she entered this school. Right now she could care less that she hadn't finished unpacking or that she had left the door wide open. It didn't matter because well she was reading her comics and that was the only thing important at the moment.

Walker stepped out of the lecture hall, shrugging on his coat, a small suitcase in his hand. It possessed everything he owned - he had seen little reason to take a great deal of belongings with him. Such material possessions were irrelevant. He wasn't here to have fun, to enjoy himself, to relax with other students.

He was here to learn to kill.

"Protectors of humanity." That was what the headmaster had called them. He almost laughed; all these young, fresh-faced kids. Who were they? Children, all of them - half of them probably never been in a fight in their lives. They'd be moulded into killers, well enough - he had no doubt of that. From what little he'd seen, these 'Guardians' were skilled soldiers.

Didn't mean he trusted them, though.

He started walking towards his dorm. As he walked, he made his way past a young woman, leading a group of girls into their respective dormitory. For the briefest of moments, their eyes met - he thought she might have looked familiar. For reasons he could not fathom, his heart jumped.

Then she was gone behind a brick wall, and he kept walking.

((Anyone want to have their character come up to Walker and chat with him?))

Having woken before her alarm Ellie had already finished the medial tasks of the morning. After a hot shower, brushing and drying her hair and giving her teeth a good scrub she had nearly felt human. For the day she’d chosen a pair of well worn in skinny jeans (that some would argue were a bit too big because they didn’t stick to her legs like spandex}, a white tank top and a green plaid flannel shirt that seemed to brighten up her eyes. After brushing her hair into a side ponytail she stuffed her feet in her boots, scooped up her book bag and headed for breakfast.

Since she was early breakfast was an unusually dull affair. No one she knew was wandering about yet so she grabbed a bowl of oatmeal and some cranberries and ate while reviewing her school schedule for this term. In particular the little asterisk at the bottom in bold that read:

* Student will receive extra lessons in Martial Arts outside planned school curriculum. Student tutor will be Ethan Barrett.

It went on to list some contact information, mainly a dorm room number.

Ellie sighed. Martial Arts tutoring on top of her school schedule? She supposed she should be grateful the guy was willing to help her get caught up – but all she really felt was dread. More Martial Arts classes. That meant twice as many as last year and last year she was a total flop. She was all right with remembering the forms and going through the motions during the exercises…but sparring… whenever she had to actually use the skills against someone she chickened out.

Her brother, Drew, didn’t believe her at first. She had no trouble swatting him when he irritated her. But just hitting random strangers was somehow harder.

More students were starting to mill into the cafeteria. Polishing off her oatmeal she decided she better check and make sure said brother was awake. If he didn’t get motoring soon he’d actually miss breakfast entirely. And he was a crusty guy when he didn’t eat.

So she stuffed the schedule back into her bag and got ready to leave. Putting her dishes up for one of the cafeteria ladies Ellie grabbed a blueberry muffin (just in case) and headed for door. Walking across the grass in the sunlight she curled the top of the brown bag for the muffin and used it as a handle.

Opening the door to the boys’ dormitory building Ellie slipped inside quietly. Something about being the boys dorm always made her feel like she was breaking some kind of code – even though it was okay with the rules so long as it wasn’t after lights out. That and the halls, even on the first day, always had the hinted scent of old socks.

And just as she entered she realized her brother wasn't in the building at all. No one really knew how it worked that they could tell things like that - but Ellie would have bet all of her life savings that she was right. Oh well, she had to cross the dormitory to get to her first class anyways, she she decided she'd just pass through and act like it wasn't a mistake at all.

In passing the halls she thought she recognized one of the numbers on the doors and paused. Isn’t that the number of my would-be tutor? Ellie wondered and fished the paper out of her bag again. Yup, that’s the right room number. Maybe I should say hi…

As she approached the door it opened and Ellie squeaked in surprise. She hadn’t expected him to be getting ready to leave when she was about to knock.

“I uhm, er…well…” she stammered for a moment knowing he must think she was a total goof. Shaking her head she cleared her thoughts. “I mean hi, I uhm, I’m Ellie. You’re supposed to be tutoring me in Martial Arts this year and I was passing by so I thought I should say hi or something and yeah… Sorry if I’m interrupting something.”

Now that she was speaking decent English Ellie got a chance to size up her new tutor. Okay, lets be honest, she was checking him out. And to her conflicting dismay and elation he was pretty easy on the eyes, nay gorgeous when you got a good look at him. She’d probably passed the guy a zillion times in the hall last year and wouldn’t have noticed him, but on close inspection he wasn’t too shabby at all.

Great, how am I supposed to hit him if he’s good looking? she thought helplessly.

Drew gave a half wave and smile as Ari mentioned helping out with first year orientation and said goodbye. He watched her leave his eyes on her retreating form. Drew just knew Quinn was probably grinning idiotically at him or watching Ari leave himself, so his eyes dropped to his breakfast where he continued to eat using his food as an excuse not to acknowledge what he knew both of them were thinking. Quinn elbowing him in the ribs interrupted his staring contest with his breakfast and Drew looked at Quinn expectantly his eyebrows raised, ”Yes?”

"Man oh man…she seems nice. But she's poking at the ~danger zone~," Quinn sang the last bit. Drew rolled his eyes, but a smile and small laugh peaked out from an otherwise seemingly annoyed expression. He was used to Quinn’s quirky expressions. Drew was pretty sure every girl he ever talked to had somehow been in the “danger zone” according to Quinn.

”Naw,” Drew said while watching Quinn poke at his plate, ”It’s the beginning of the year. I’m keeping options open.” Unbidden a pair of green-blue eyes flashed in his mind’s eye. Blinking rapidly, Drew rid himself of the unwanted image only to realize he was staring at a plate empty of bacon.

Drew stuck out his lower lip at Quinn childishly as Quinn chewed what was the last of Drew’s bacon and continued, "I'll probably see her later. I'm volunteering to help out the First Years too."

“Why? You need extra credit?” Drew laughed before stealing a cherry tomato off of Quinn’s plate and popping it in his mouth. Helping clueless first years get their keys and find their rooms sounded like a drag. First year orientation was always crowded and chaotic. He remembered one of his friends from soccer club had lost his voice from trying to yell directions over the noise; he hadn’t been able to properly talk for a week. Okay…so maybe that was an exaggeration, but helping with orientation was the last thing Drew would ever want to do. Unless, of course, there was something in it for him.

“Maybe you should stick with Ari. Keep her safe from the danger zone.” Drew joked. “You never know, maybe she actually adores your salad eating ways.” Drew continued once again poking fun at his mate’s choice in breakfast, which was about the only thing Drew could make fun of. Drew really couldn’t mock Quinn for anything real. Quinn was an upstanding guy. He’d always listen to whoever was talking to him even if they were talking about something boring like taxes, and he’d always help someone who asked for help. It was funny how Drew and him were so opposite in that respect, yet somehow became friends. Drew sometimes wondered why Quinn didn’t have more luck in the lady department since he was such a nice guy. He was sure he could definitely land some if he tried, but Drew never really pressed the issue. Drew didn’t want to push buttons. Plus, more for him, right?

”Naw, It’s the beginning of the year. I’m keeping options open.” Chewing down the mouthful currently blocking his passage of speech, an audible 'glug' could be heard as he finally grinded down the food into sizes small enough to swallow. Coming from Drew, that statement was definitely humorous. Letting out an amused snort he exaggeratedly answered, "Psshh! You're 'options' are open all year round. Even when you have a perfectly good girl in you're arms." He enlarged his nostrils and made a funny expression then began to finish off the rest of the vegetables remaining on his plate, "Well, I guess I can't blame you for you're playboy instincts." Quinn was about to get up and out of his seat just as Drew snatched a tomato that he hadn't noticed earlier. Quinn didn't mind at all. I mean, how does bacon ever compare to a tomato anyway?

“Why? You need extra credit?” Quickly walking his empty dish over to the dirty plate window nearby, he returned back to the table and leaned on its surface with both hands while still standing. "Nope, not really. Just wanting to lend a hand you know?", he tilted his head lightly.
“Maybe you should stick with Ari. Keep her safe from the danger zone. You never know, maybe she actually adores your salad eating ways," Drew suggested. The comment sent an image of the girl viciously attacking her breakfast into his mind causing a soft chuckle to escape. "Geh, she's more you're type and she was digging the wink. Not that any of the girls reject 'the wink'. I'm not into relationships anyway and you know me! I don't know the first thing about girls. They're so...", he tapped the bottom of his chin as he squinted his eyes to find the right word, "Strange." He finished, satisfied by his vocabulary choice. Quinn was never one to understand females, unlike his womanizing friend Drew, the two of them contrasted in that section greatly. "Mayyybe you should volunteer. I'm sure the two of you will cross paths there and you might find some cute 'options' there too!", he encouraged him as he patted Drew on the back. "Kay man! I gotta go." His farewell was short and said while he was already turning away out of the cafeteria and starting into a slow jog up the wide stair case towards the lecture hall.

As he made his way inside, the large room was already getting pretty crowded with the orientation for that batch just having ended and everyone was flocking out the exits. Another volunteer sitting at a desk previously handing out maps and directions, waved him over, wrote down 'Quinton' on a peel-off sticky name tag just below the print that labeled him as 'Volunteer Student' and sent him out with a pair of girls . As he lead the way to the Girls Dorm he could hear the chics giggling and whispering every now and then, which made him narrow his eyes in puzzlement.
"Aannd here we are. Room 105 and 106! Hopefully you enjoy you're schooling here at Greenwoods Prep!" He said enthusiastically with a smile as he pointed both his hands towards the open doors. The females chortled some more before they both entered one room. "Thank you-", the second girl paused and ran a finger over his white tag and he could feel the slight pressure of her pointer on the left side of his chest, "Ah, Quinton!", she concluded. The other girl yanked her inside and slammed the door shut hurriedly afterwards.

A creeped out shudder ran down his back as he rubbed his sticker wonderingly. Not paying much attention as he walked down the hallway, he almost fell over a laptop bag on the ground. "What the-", he caught himself and turned his head to see an open door with a pair of legs crossed on the bed, a comic covering the person's face. Picking up the dropped luggage, he noticed a couple more comic books and some video games peeking out from the front pocket. His eyes widened in surprise as he saw a Black Ops 2 case and one Halo container staring back at him. 'Weird. Don't know any girls that play those kinds of games here... Nor, read comics for that matter.', he thought silently to himself before giving the already unclosed door a knock. "Excuse me, I think you accidentally dropped you're bag in the hallway." The belonging was in his hold as he wiggled it a bit in front of him to show her.

Orientation was as awful as she'd hoped it wouldn't be. As the freshmen began to trickle out, Ari grabbed a newbie's duffel bag and slung it over her shoulder. At least this is a good workout, she thought, as she pointed another student towards the bathrooms. Giving the girl directions, Ari finally broke off, grabbing another bag on the way and herding a group of girls towards their building. On the way, she met the gaze of another newcomer for a second- a tall figure, though he was gone before she could get more than a vague impression. Nonetheless, she felt a quick shiver run down her spine, a feeling she couldn't identify that left her craning her neck to try and spot him again. Alas, he was lost in the crowd, so she turned back to the students following her and smiled, pushing it to the back of her mind.

"Its not a bad school," she said to one of the girls, who had just asked her about the school. "There are some fun classes, and the clubs are a lot of fun. You're required to join one, but a lot of us are in several. Otherwise you've just got way to much free time."

"How could you ever have to much free time?" the girl asked, and Ari laughed.

"There isn't as much to do here," she shrugged, "and you get tired of lying around pretty quickly. I mean, some free time is nice, but when you don't have as many friends, or places to go...well, its boring."

"Why did you come here then?" the girl asked, and Ari suppressed a wince. She hated talking about this, even so long after it happened. Never one to lie, she answered, "It wasn't by choice," in a tone that quickly shut the inquisitive first year up. Fielding several more questions from the girls- thankfully, no personal ones- she finally led the last one to her room. Of course, it was the girl with the most luggage, and of course she lived on the fourth floor.

Massaging her shoulder, Ari slipped down the stairs to her own room, since the next bus wasn't scheduled for an hour. She passed the kid from breakfast- Quinn, that was his name- and ducked into her own room, shutting the door and dropping onto her bed. Staring at the ceiling, she found her thoughts turning back to the boy from that morning, the one she hadn't really seen. Pondering her response, she groaned in frustration and rolled over, burying her face in her pillow.

Ethan Barrett

Ethan had lost his shoes. He had either forgotten while packing that footwear was important, or he simply forgot to put them in his suitcase.
Whichever was true, as Ethan searched for the missing shoes he began to wish that he had checked to make sure he brought everything. He'd also forgotten extra clothes and school supplies, which was just absolutely fantastic. He'd have to go out to the tiny little town near the school and replace everything... he hated that place.
Did they even have a shoe store?

Ethan frowned at the mess that now scattered the floor. He had tossed everything out of the bags and suitcase in attempt to find the items, but nada, none of it was there.
To others, the problem of losing a few things may not be much of an issue, but to Ethan... he was irresponsible, wasn't he? Forgetting things, misplacing them, being a stupid idiot. No wonder his father looked like he wanted to smack him upside the head sometimes, Ethan couldn't even remember to bring.. what was it now? Socks?
Very professional.

The boy shook it off and headed towards the door again. He had already decided he was going to leave his dorm and actually do something (though, mind him, his history class was fast approaching) for once. Losing a shirt, two pairs of shoes, and apparently all of his socks except the pair he was wearing wasn't going to keep him cooped up. Oh, no sir! He was... probably just going to walk to his first class and get a head start on the lesson. Very exciting stuff, you know. But the orientation that he usually attended was no doubt over by now and... to be honest Ethan wasn't interesting enough to have more things to do.

He pulled the handle and was about to step out of his room before noticing that someone was blocking his way. A girl, in fact. What were Ethan's thoughts as she stumbled for what to say?
She's short.
"I mean hi, I uhm, I’m Ellie. You’re supposed to be tutoring me in Martial Arts this year and I was passing by so I thought I should say hi or something and yeah… Sorry if I’m interrupting something."
The girl said, earning an amused smile from the boy she was talking to.
She was the one he was going to be tutoring? Really? Briefly Ethan wondered if it was a joke. Ellie was so small looking, it was hard to imagine her kicking people around.

"You probably already know of me then, but I'm Ethan." He introduced himself, once again giving a smile. "And don't worry about it," Ethan continued, quickly excusing her apology, "It's not like I've got much to do at the moment anyways." While talking, the boy racked his brain for any knowledge about Ellie. He had to know at least something about her, didn't he? Maybe not... names and faces seemed to slip by him despite everyone else being able to know every little detail. He wasn't surprised that Ellie was completely new to him.
"So! You're a second year, aren't you? I think I might have seen you around last year.." Ethan lied, trying not to sound like he had no clue who the heck Ellie was. Hopefully he wasn't just coming off as creepy.

Rose read as Batman stood on a building watching the bank from a distance as the joker and a few other men stood inside the bank, robbing it. It was then that she flipped to the next page of the comic, looking over the amazing art work and details of each character in each small box. It was also then that she heard a knock at the door. Her eyes stayed on the two pages that she was looking at, only raising to the edge of the page. "Come in," She said, cutting him off from telling her that he thought she may have dropped something. She read the next page and this was the page that batman swung into action to catch the fiend of course with many issues along with it. He had to sneak in, only to be caught like always. She good guy always got caught or at least most of the time. She noticed that after at least the fifth comic that she read that involved almost any superhero. Yes she heard him say that he thought she may have dropped something but when she was into a comic she was into it and could care less about anything else. Flicking the corner of the comic she finally marked her spot, closing the comic and setting it on a night table next to her. Sitting up she noticed what was in his hand finally, her laptop case with all of her comics and video games in it.

Not only had she noticed what he was holding but she also noticed that well he was a guy. Not that a guy was a surprise to her just that well she partly had expected like the principle or what ever you called him here at this prep school was at her door. Clearing her throat she looked around, carefully pushing by him to look around outside to make sure none of her video games or comics fell out. That was the last she needed was to lose a video game or a comic. She was sure no girl wanted a video game or a comic so when she saw nothing out there she took several steps back until she was standing at least 5 feet in front of him. "I-I-um I- I'm..." She choked on her words, adjusting her batman shirt that clearly showed off her guardian marking. "T-t-thanks." She muttered then slowly reached out and carefully took the bag from him. She swallowed hard and glanced around a little awkwardly.

Holding the bag with both hands she glanced down at the bag. "S-sorry I'm acting weird. Gosh... You p-probably think I'm weird. A girl who plays video games and r-r-reads comics. M-m-my name is Rose by the w-way." She said softly and did her best to not look at him but only a few times to make sure he was still standing there. Oh gosh she was being so weird maybe even a bit awkward at the moment. Why couldn't she be like other girls who were gifted with talking to guys, who got more or new friends at the snap of their fingers, and who weren't afraid to get out there and get to know people. All she did and still does is sit around playing video games and reading comics other than the few rare times that she actually plays a sport. Her hands gripped the bag tighter before shifting from foot to foot. "Do you like comics?" She asked, raising her eyes to his level. Stupid question Rose, you can think of better questions. She thought to herself while awaiting his response. The sound of the girls from her Junior year rang in her ears. "You'll never be good enough Strawberry. You never get your nose out of those books. They are stupid." Those words may forever be stuck in her head. Comics weren't books, they were an escape from they world, and comedy when you needed it. Moving a single hand she ran it through her hair, hoping that he wouldn't treat her like many other's have. The last thing she needed was someone to call her a geek or a weirdo on her first day here.

Ellie listened to the older boy and smiled when he fibbed about seeing her in the halls. She was pretty good at picking out lies, but at least this guy was trying not to hurt her feelings. He obviously wasn’t doing it to flatter her – which was actually kind of charming in its own way since most guys only seemed to care about that one thing. So talking to one that was fibbing about recognizing her, but otherwise sincere was refreshing.

“You don’t have to pretend to remember me for my sake, Ethan. Good guess though, I am definitely a second year,” Ellie said laughing good naturedly as she tucked a lock of honey gold hair behind her ear. “I’m really actually not sure who you are either. Your name and room number was on my schedule sheet.” Realizing that could be taken as offensive she felt her cheeks flush a little and smiled awkwardly.

If there was anything she could change about herself it was how easily she blushed. She blushed when she was embarrassed, blushed when she was shy, blushed when she felt awkward and heck, sometimes she blushed remembering times she blushed. “I mean, I’m sure we’ve passed each other in the halls at some point or another, but really, the school is huge – we cant be expected to remember everyone. Right?”

She hesitated looking over his facial features for any sign of annoyance and shrugged. “I just kind of wanted to break the ice while I was in the area. I mean, seeing as you’re going to be kicking my butt all over this school soon we might as well know each other’s faces, right? I’m Elizabeth Burke, but you can call me Ellie.”

She offered her hand to shake and grinned. “As you may have guess I’m crap at martial arts. So I’m sorry in advance for being a total pain and putting more work in your schedule. Thank you for being willing to try to teach me.”

”Come in.” she responded hastily, talking over the last part of his sentence. Swallowing down a growing, hard lump in his throat, it was the first time a girl had just let him into their room in such a blunt and straight up invitation. He had initially expected her to apologize, walk over to the front to retrieve her bag, thank him, then close the door. But the unexpected welcome definitely caught the boy off guard. Taking a hesitant couple of steps inside, he was sure she probably thought it was someone else at the door, but since she allowed him to enter, he obeyed. Still holding her electronics case, he noticed that she didn't even look up from her book, but he didn't mind. His eyes were already too caught up in taking in all the super hero posters tacked up on her walls and how different this girl was to other females he'd seen around the school. Even her bed set followed the theme.

Suddenly hearing her bed squeak, his eyes tore away from admiring the decor and he realized that she finally put the comic down and was now sitting on the edge of her mattress looking at him. "Uh. I uh foun-", he began, also raising his pointer finger into the air, but before he could say anything more, she quickly stood up and dashed for the opened door, making him do a side step to get out of the way. Waddling ninety degrees to face her, his pose was still frozen in place as she had her head cocked out swiveling from side to side in the hallway before she turned back to acknowledge him.

"I-I-um I- I'm...T-t-thanks." The red head was stuttering and mumbling at the same time, but since it was just the two of them in a quiet room, he need not strain himself to hear her as she rearranged her shirt and took back the item holder into the arms of its rightful owner. As silent and awkward the atmosphere was, he could here her gulp down, which lead his gaze from her face to her neck. But something else also caught his attention, something dark and engraved into her skin. It was her guardian mark. Unconsciously his eyes trailed down from her collar to the two dragons meeting just above her brea- he flitted his glance away real fast and hoped she hadn't noticed where his eyes had inpurposely gone on their own. And, like the Gods had heard his plea, she was actually looking down at her bag.

"S-sorry I'm acting weird. Gosh... You p-probably think I'm weird. A girl who plays video games and r-r-reads comics. M-m-my name is Rose by the w-way." Her words were still fractured and said quite faintly, but at least the volume was a bit louder than last time. Having her head towards the floor wasn't helping with making her more audible either, but guessing that she was probably a freshman, since he'd never seen her around before, it made sense that she was awfully shy. Though she seemed to steal glimpses at him every few seconds.

"Oh, no no! Not at all!", he was waving both hands and chuckling nervously in disagreement with her self put down. "Actually, I think it's pretty cool that you play video games and stuff. Most girls aren't really into that." He shrugged as he complimented her, "Oh, and I'm Quinton!", his grin was wide and he was doing his best to make her feel at ease and comfortable, not awkward, since he saw her tense up and move her footing.

"Do you like comics?", Rose asked simultaneous with her decisively meeting his pupils. Towering over her at 6'1" she was close to an entire head below him. So, he had his neck bent down a bit to keep her from having to crane her own face so far back just to make proper eye contact with him.

"Sure I like comics! I mean who doesn't? I heard they're making movies for every famous DC and Marvel super hero back in the real world. Is that right? Too bad we can't watch movies here too often. We're a bit limited around this area."

She had a hand weaving through strands of bright ginger which ended just above her shoulders. Cut shorter than a majority of the female population in Greenwoods, but the style suited her. "I see you own Halo... And COD. There's two public consoles found in the lounge. One is in the Boys Dorm and the other used to be here, but they moved it into our dorm as well because you can imagine how dusty it got in here." He actually wasn't joking. The memory was still vivid in his mind. The day when the game deprived console entered the hands of the worthy...cough...the boys. But Rose may be changing that opinion. " We have an Xbox back at our dorm. And I say 'we' cause I share a room. If you want, you could come and use it some time," he offered, completely oblivious to how the suggestion could be taken in a very wrong way. Those sort of things never cross his mind. Quinn is a simple minded kid and acts truly to that personality trait.

The lack of activity quickly got to Ari, driving her from her dorm and down the stairs, out into the sunlight. First years were still arriving, and so she helped move a few in, pounding up and down stairs until her hair was sticking to her sweaty forehead and she was about ready to scream with all the stupid, mundane questions she kept answering over and over again. Well, it was only the one question that she couldn't stand, really. "Why did you come here?" It wasn't their fault, she knew, she just hated thinking about it, and this day kept awakening feelings she'd long since learned to bury, and was slowly letting go, on the road to healing. Last year had been even worse. She shouldn't have volunteered, but she'd thought it wouldn't be so bad. Obviously, she'd been wrong.

Finally, she slipped out a side door, avoiding any more girls with heavy bags and longing, lost eyes. Breathing the uncluttered air, looking at the track across campus, she thought about going for a jog. There were trails crisscrossing much of the undeveloped space inside the campus walls, and she doubted that many people would be out on their last day of freedom. But she was already hot and out of breath, and she knew that running would probably only make her mood worse. So she took a few more deep breaths of clean, crisp air and ducked back inside, avoiding eye contact with anyone until she reached the haven of her room. It was clean (save the unmade bed) and sparse, Ari having not had the opportunity to bring anything from home. She'd finally swapped the standard grey-blue comforter for a forest green one, and bought a desk lamp, some pillows for the floor when friends came over, and tacked up some pages ripped from magazines. It was still boring, though. And, on purpose, nothing she'd chosen reminded her of home in any way.

Kicking her shoes off by the closed door, she moved to the open space in the center of the room and moved through her stretching routine, slowly, taking more time than usual. Slow, even breathing calmed her pulse and her mind, and she focused only on the physical feeling of muscles stretching and pulling. Sitting and reaching for her toes, she grimaced, as always, when the skin on her back protested, the jagged scar tissue still complaining when pulled to far. But she just had to ignore it- it wasn't going to go away any time soon.

And that was the mentality she'd devised about most of the pain in her life. Ignore it and pretend its not there, and eventually it'll go away. Deep down, she wasn't sure if it would ever really work, but it was enough for now. Enough to bury herself in work and school and activities, to make friendships that never spoke about her past, to always talk about others instead of herself. A coping mechanism, she supposed.

Glancing at her alarm clock, stretches done, she was surprised to find that it was nearing lunchtime. She could burn the rest of the time reading, and go to one of the training gyms in the evening after lunch. Her patience for the day had run out, and she'd climbed the stairs far too much to help out anymore. She was allowed to be selfish every once in a while, right?

Rose's hands twisted around the handle on her laptop bag full of comics and video games. She looked down at the ground for a moment, a bit nervous when it came to talking to this guy who was standing in her dorm. When he informed her that he had heard that they were making a movie for every DC and Marvel super hero back she became excited though her face refused to show it. When he also told her that the Xbox here in the dorm got really dusty after a while of no one playing on it her expression turned sad. "What a shame," She muttered and finally looked up at him. It was a little hard to look at him because well she was at least a good head or maybe even a foot taller than her. She couldn't really tell. At the time he had told her that she could use his Xbox some time she rose an eyebrow slightly. "Thanks for the offer but I don't k-know, m-maybe." She stuttered only a little this time which was kind of impressing. She rarely stopped stuttering around people she just met mostly because of the fear of being rejected or maybe even just looked down upon like she usually is.

Once again she glanced down at her video games and comics, "By the way thanks for finding my laptop case full of my video games and comics. I don't know what I would have done if someone took it or if it disappeared and I lost it." She said with a small smile. Glancing past him to not only see if people were still moving through the hallways but also to give her neck a small rest. "You probably should get going. I have a lot of unpacking to do and you probably have some stuff to take care of." She mentioned before moving away from him to set her laptop case down full of her comics and video games. Reaching into the second luggage she had brought she pulled out an Ipod and some small speakers. Plugging the Ipod in and setting the speakers on the night table she looked through her music, realizing he was still there. Smiling a little she looked back, tripping over her luggage which made her smile disappear and her cheeks turn red. Finally hurrying to him she shooed him out the door. "Thanks again, I hope I see you around some time." She mentioned, waiting for his response before closing the door behind him. This was the time that she really started to unpack everything she had, placing more posters, and even some pictures up of her with her actual family (meaning her parents and brother) while also her "foster family" (her uncle and aunt). While she listened to Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down. For now she just wanted to get ready for anything because for all she knew they could start classes soon.

"Thanks for the offer but I don't k-know, m-maybe." The sentence uttered was more confident this time and efficiently said without much hesitation and repeated syllables. Quinton grinned toothily, glad to have given her the opportunity for them to meet each other again. Maybe in a less tense and awkward situation. A friend-like, laid back atmosphere where he could just play video games with one of his buds, but the companion being of the opposite gender. He'd never had too many close female friends and he could only imagine how bothersome Drew would be if Rose ever actually came over. Her answer was just a 'maybe', not really a yes. She thanked him for snatching up her bag and returning it to her and he followed her eyes as they seemed to stare through him. "You probably should get going. I have a lot of unpacking to do and you probably have some stuff to take care of. Thanks again, I hope I see you around some time." Noticing her stumble on some of her belongings, her face reddened like Ari's had this morning, but once again, the innocent, unknowing little Quinn didn't notice. He helped her steady herself, before Rose ushered him out of the doorway hastily. "Yeah, sure! No problem." And the port clicked with a light exhale upon his face.

What happened felt so out of place in his daily schedule, that he had completely forgotten to check the time. Lunch was rolling around soon and his stomach grumbled as he exited the Girl's Dorm after helping a bunch of wandering females along the way. In confirmation with the clock's ticking arms, he observed a couple of cooks enter into the back of the main building to begin crafting up a meal for the hundreds of hungry future guardians. Rubbing his stomach to soothe his protesting belly, he wished that he had eaten more earlier like Drew and Ari had suggested, but decided there was no point on fretting over it now since he could not turn back time just to grab a couple more slices of ham and bacon.

"What took you so long? I sent you out with only two girls earlier." The volunteer muttered disapprovingly. Quinton gritted his teeth, but didn't bother to argue back that he had actually assisted a load of lost people while he was making his way to the Orientation Hall. "Well, it's almost time for break, so we're out for a little before then.", she clacked a pile of papers onto the desk to straighten them out into a neat alignment and waved as she left. Shrugging a bit, he guessed the arriving buses had slowed down and headed for the Basketball Courts.

A group of guys were already there playing a heated round, the sun was beating down hotter than earlier and he could see that their shirts were heavily soaked around the chest and pits, whilst others were shirtless all together. Grabbing the hem of his own white top, he pulled off his own and jogged right into the rough-play, only clothed in his black jeans and runners. His arms were spread wide and efficiently preventing one of the opposing players from scoring. Height was a huge advantage at the sport and he was often guaranteed a spot on the sport's team because of it. A chuckle radiated out of him, beads of sweat racing down his forehead as he dribbled to the left elbow of the foul line, pausing for less than a heartbeat, and firing a shot with minimal blockage from failing defenders. By the time they finished, the bunch of them were huffing and puffing, including himself and all looking like they showered in their own bodily condense.

"Good game!", he patted one of the guy's on the back as he wiped perspiration from his face and ran at a decent pace towards the cafeteria for the lunch he had been awaiting.

Ethan Barrett

When the girl admitted that she in fact didn't know who he was, either, Ethan felt both a mix of surprise and relief. Did she really have no idea? That was... good. If he hadn't been the one who was going to be tutoring her, it would have been one less person who would ask him 'Ethan, can you help me with this?' But then again, Ethan wasn't sure if he would have had a problem accepting. The girl seemed nice enough. She was... pleasant.
Her light face was also now a deep shade of pink.

"I mean, I’m sure we’ve passed each other in the halls at some point or another, but really, the school is huge – we cant be expected to remember everyone. Right?"
She said, an attempt in which Ethan assumed to be covering up the fact that she hadn't heard of him. He wasn't at all offended, not even surprised. Come to think of it, nearly everyone he ran in to always asked if he was really Ethan. They hadn't been bothered to learn what his face looked like, they were just busy chatting about how his father was a Council member.
It's not really you they're impressed with. Ethan's thoughts chided at him. You're the boring boy who does nothing.

The girl in front of him introduced herself as Ellie and apologized in advance for being a bother to him. Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Nah, you can't be too bad." He assured her, a slight grin appearing on his face. "And even if you are completely terrible, it's not like there's a set deadline. I don't have much else to do with my time anyways." He explained, not realizing his words could have come off as rude until after he spoke them.

"I mean... no, that's not what I meant." Ethan corrected, quickly trying to assemble the rights words. "Putting time aside for you isn't a last option, I volunteered and I want to, but-" he stopped himself from saying any more and felt his face grow hot with embarrassment. Ethan's skills didn't fall into place with interacting with people. This was humiliating. He actually liked talking to Ellie, but very thought running through his head at the moment was telling him to say his goodbye to her and leave.

"When you have some free time, feel free to come by and tell me when you're available for tutoring. My schedule's fairly flexible, so there shouldn't be many problems on my part." Alright, good. He didn't stumble over his words this time. "Anyway, I actually have somewhere I should be getting to, but we can talk more later if you'd like. Sometime, I guess..." Ethan added. His words trailed off into an embarrassed mumble, but hopefully he managed to get his point across.

The next morning:

As always, Ari's alarm shrilled its wake-up call, sending her tumbling out of bed and stumbling to the bathroom. Bleary-eyed and still tired- she'd gone for a long run before bed last night- she managed to get ready without too much trouble, her hair almost behaving. Donning a sleeveless shirt and fitted athletic pants, she left the room in a hurry, grabbing a light sweatshirt on the way out the door.

Breakfast went by in a blur, Ari snagging a seat with some friends- the type of girls who chatted incessantly, letting her disappear into their conversation, the laughter blowing away any lingering depression from the other day. Smiling and laughing with them, Ari felt good again, like she could forget about the past once more.

"Ari, you realize that your hair's sticking up in the back, right?" one of the girls asked, and Ari blushed, putting her hand to the back of her head. Sure enough, she'd managed to miss that somehow, and she laughed it off as she pulled it back into a bun. She probably should have just done that from the start- they were bound to get sweaty today anyways, since Kingly, the third year's physical class teacher, favored warming up with long runs. Though Ari liked running, she wasn't particularly fond of laps, especially not long ones at grueling paces. But it would be worth it- this was the year that they got to start weapons training, in Martial Arts. Finally. Not only guns, which weren't effective for killing demons, though the worked to wound, weaken, and distract them; but also swords and spears and knives, flashy bladed weaponry. They'd only get to use wood, of course, but the real things were edged with blessed silver, metal burning like acid on the demon's flesh.

"At least I don't have toothpaste on my mouth still," Ari shot back, the other girl blushing even redder than Ari and lifting her hand to her mouth. Karin was kind of a jerk, but she was flustered easily. Not the type of girl Ari would usually hang out with, but some of the others liked her, and it wasn't like there was a large number of students to choose from.

Breakfast finally over, Ari headed to her History class, strolling leisurely. Arriving plenty early, she choose a seat in the middle, notebook at the ready. With ten minutes till class started, she was one of the first ones there, and she tapped her pencil on her desk idly, staring out the window as she waited for the rest of her classmates and the teacher to arrive.

Elizabeth Burke

He didn’t seem phased that she didn’t know who he was. Not really anyway, a little surprised perhaps. Ellie realized then that he must have been fairly popular around the school – at least in name. This only made her feel all the more awkward about not knowing him, but at least he didn’t seem to mind.

He in turn floundered a little, trying to retract a comment that may have come off as tactless, and Ellie actually grinned. At least she wasn’t the only one tripping over words and trying to me polite.

She was relieved that he didn’t seem to be an arrogant jock. No offense to her brother but… well Drew had tried to tutor her before when she had first started to struggle with the whole fighting bit of the school and she didn’t find it helpful at all. Ethan, so far, seemed deeper than that. She liked it.

Then he mentioned getting her schedule from her when she had time and that he had to get going. Ellie nodded to the invitation to talk more later and smiled. “Sure. I have to pick an elective class still, sometime today anyways, so I’ll get my availability to you at the latest sometime tomorrow,” she promised brushing an escaped lock of her hair back behind her ear. “Say, now that we’re not strangers we’ll notice each other in the halls,” she added as a joke with a wink of her eye. “See ya around, Ethan.”

Then she turned and headed down the hall toward the doors exiting the building that would face the school. She had to find either Evie or Drew, they could help her with deciding on an elective and she could pout to them about having to try to muster up the will power to hit a good looking tutor.
