Kier shrugged and grinned a little, indicating that he didn't take what he was about to describe too seriously and he didn't expect Torrie to either.

"Well basically," he said, "I wanted to explore some sort of relationship complication that you don't usually hear about. So I came up with the idea of a guy who's previous wife, fiancee, lover or whatever, had tragically died. Yeah I know, happy stuff right? But the point of the song would be that although he'd met someone new, and had fallen in love with that person, he could never promise to love this new person exclusively because technically he'd never fallen out of love with the old person, and a part of his heart still belonged to her."

He chuckled at the hopelessness of his own description.

"But you see," he went on, "I can't even describe it properly, let alone write decent lyrics about it, because it's a position unlike anything I've ever been in myself."

Looking up at Torrie again his smile steadied a little, and almost against his better sense he slid his hand across the table and placed it over hers.

"And I suppose it's ironic," he said, "that the position I'm in now is one that literally thousands of songs have been written about, but I don't know how many people have actually been in it."
