Max allowed Willow to hold on to her for a moment. She closed her eyes, trying to breathe. Willow's smell enveloped her like a blanket and she felt calmer being there. Then she remembered what she had just been doing and why and she pushed back just a little. She wiped at her mouth with the back of her right hand and at her eyes with the back of her left. A single sob bubbled its way up and out, but she wouldn't allow any more.
Then she heard Willow's voice and she looked up in time for her face to be held gently between Willow's hands. Her brown eyes boring into Max's so intently it was like she was trying to make sure her words reached deep inside Max. Which was smart because that's where Max was starting to feel herself retreat but for now, she was held there by Willow's gaze and hands. Her heart beat irregularly, but she chalked it up to her grief, the running, and the vomiting. She tried and failed to find her voice--which was a first for Max and it would be terrified in another circumstance. So instead she just nodded, one hand reaching up to cover Willows. It was more a sign that she was listening than anything else.
Then Willow took her hand, and let her out without another word. In fact, she even squeezed Willow's hand once, as her way to say thank you. Once they reached the bottom floor, she stopped and finally found her voice, "Wait what about--" She couldn't say it now. She couldn't say her name without sobbing. Tears bubbled up, but she blinked them back. "The apartment. Should we notify the police? What if they know we were there and come looking thinking we did it? What if by running we become prime suspects?" She was becoming hysterical and she knew it. Being a thief was one thing, but being a murderer? That's another thing entirely. When she signed up for the third life, she didn't sign up for murder charges. She was definitely losing it. The only thing that seemed to be keeping her tethered to her mind, was Willow's hand still wrapped around hers.
