Little by little, the dark energy called miasma was beat back. Powered by the lines of the pentagram from each of the five spots on the star shape around Ancient London, the five mages cast all of their mana up in the air. But to save the world there would always be some sort of consequence and they all felt it as the miasma ate away at their now defenseless forms. Bit by bit they were swallowed by the rage of the miasma, as the world slowly, ever so slowly began to clear up. With hope that one day humanity could populate the rest of this world and thrive once again, the five mages finished their task. It was a lot of work but finally, it was done, after twelve hours of nonstop casting. Erika was panting, and then she stood up, knowing that they had to go, listening for the sign of success from everyone else.
She listened for the sound of success.
She didn't hear the signal flare because her ears had been stolen from her, her hearing completely gone. It was a magical removal of course, so technology would not be able to fix it. This was part of the sacrifice, all five of the mages had to give up a part of their body in order to fulfill the ritual. The world was saved, but not without some sort of price. And what of Astra? With hope, the baby was dead now as a result of cleansing all of the miasma. The cursed child should not have been allowed to live to begin with. "Good, you're all done." Mallier spoke into the crystal ball, all five of them having one. "Seraphina, you'll have to gather everyone." And so she did, starting with taking the deaf Erika from the ruins of the Tower Society. She said words but Erika couldn't hear her, couldn't read her lips. However it seemed that the former Valkyrie had lost the use of her dominant hand. She, too, had suffered a lost.
After gathering everyone else it turned out they all had suffered a lost. Poor Maple had lost her sense of smell now, and for kittens smell was more than half of their world. She seemed so lost and confused upon being found, crying because the world fell scary and unknown to her now. Rosemary had gone blind, her eyes now unseeing as if they didn't exist in the first place. As for Alistair, his legs were taken from him, he would never be able to walk again. The five now crippled mages didn't really know what to do, other than follow Mallier's command, of course. "You have to head back to my place now. Good luck, I'll try to find ways to help you guys adapt with your new weaknesses." She sounded guilty as she projected the sounds into their heads, as if she wished she could have given up something to spare one of them the fate.
It was a harrowing yet somewhat calm journey back home. With much pain and effort, Erika finished the last shadow jump, helping everyone else out of it as well. Seraphina grinned weakly, knowing she would never get to play the piano again, helping Alistair with her one good arm, Maple was tugging gently on Rosemary's sleeve to guide the old healer safely into the tower. "We're back?" Erika tried to say but it already sounded a bit slurred and strange. "How is Clover?" She wanted to ask but already with her hearing gone, words were likely beyond her now too.
The five mages would have a lot of work to do to get used to their new circumstances, but if you asked them if it was worth it to save the world, they all would happily volunteer to do it again.
