Bored and annoyed Vincent pulls out his cell phone to keep him occupied. Hating the red dots on his apps, he makes sure to check them first. As he reads Brian's text a slight smile graces his face.
Please tell me you're at least having a good day. Pretty sure I'm ruining my vision the longer I look at the computer screen.
Taking a sip of his coke or, as it has been empty for 10 minutes, his ice cube water reduction, he responded.
My day is awesome, maybe even so good it totally cancels your bad day out.
Taking another sip he quickly sends a second message.
Feel better now?
As he presses send for the second time he sees a man appearing at the entrance. He is wearing a suit, but looks barely presentable. His shirt is half hanging out of his pants, his belt is off colored and his tie hangs halfway down his chest. Vincent never liked the man, but he didnβt really need to. He was here do business, not make friends.
Vincent got up and straightened his jacket. On his face a nice big smile and sparkling eyes, showing of his charm. He stepped to the side to meet the man head on. Extending his hand he shook the man's hand firmly. βMr Winters, good to see you again.β
Feeling the man pulling his hand away, Vincent held on for 3 more shakes. In order to take control of the conversation, it starts with the greeting. Finally letting go, Vincent offers the man a seat and sits down at the same time. The man being late was inconvenient, but the following conversation was worth it. Mr Winters needed the bi-weekly order to be doubled in size. βI want to be completely honest with you, youβre asking for more than my supplier can deliver." Vincent bites his lip as he tries to show the client his hesitation. He took a good look at the man in front of him. The sweat was dripping down the manβs neck, and his eyes moved to his phone every 2 minutes. He was in a hurry, and his day seemed to have been worse than either Vincentβs or Brianβs."I would maybe be able to find a second supplier, but I can't guarantee the same pricing for you. If I need to involve a second supplier the price per item will go up with 12%.β
The man tried to negotiate, but had shown his hand to quickly. The moment Vincent mentioned the possibility of fulfilling his order Mr Winters eyes had lit up, indicating he was under some pressure to get this done. Vincent asked him for 5 minutes while contacting the second supplier. He got up and walked to the bar, well out of earshot. While paying for his drink he called the first supplier and tells him the details. βSo, I can get him on 10% higher as long as you make sure there are 2 separate deliveries. You can take the 7%, but I will take the 3. Deal?β
A minute later he left the hotel with a genuine smile on his face. Making the calculation in his head he didnβt do badly for a dayβs work. His Uber driver just arrived, and after a 20 minute ride he arrived at the Mighty Bean, hoping he would still find Brian there. Stepping in he quickly spots the writer, again deep in thought behind his laptop. Vincent walks up to the counter and quickly orders his espresso to go. Having to wait in any case he walks over to Brian, extends his hand and slowly but surely closes the laptop, giving Brian just enough time to remove his hands. "Ri? We all have to call the end of the working day at some time or another. And I am willing to bet, that you have not written a sensible word ever since you texted me. Why don't you come on up, and I'll fix us a whiskey to celebrate almost-Friday."
