The Basics
Name: Rhaegar Targaryen
Age: 17
Affiliation: House Targaryen
Gender: Male
Personality
Being the second born son wasn't exactly easy, regardless if he was a prince or not. Rhaegar constantly feels overshadowed by his older brother Aerys, who is the heir to the Iron Throne. Because he was so constantly overlooked as a child growing up, he developed a certain bitterness for his brother and his parents. While he knows his duties as a Targaryen and would defend his family's life and honor to the death, he prefers to distance himself from his parents and brother whenever possible. Rhaegar has a large appreciation, some would even say love, for the finer things in life. He prefers to surround himself in the finest cloths and metals. Nothing but the best will do. He is almost always serious, very rarely giving in to fun and laughter. He always appears calm and collected on the outside. He spends much of his time practicing with his bow, preferring it over a sword, striving to be the best. He hopes that one day he will be looked at with equal adoration and respect from his father that his brother gets. He receives plenty of attention from the ladies in King's Landing, and while he likes to play with their feelings, he has never felt anything for any of the women. He has an especially soft spot in his life is his sister, Jaehaerys. She can almost always talk him into anything, and he grants her the most smiles and laughs. He finds her to be the most beautiful woman in all of Westeros, and steals many glances at her when she's not looking. Rhaegar also feels especially protective of his younger sister, Vysenia, seeing as she is the only sibling younger than himself. He doesn't like to show his affection for his younger sister openly, preferring to be seen as as a strong young man, but secretly he would do anything to make her happy.
History
Rhaegar is the fourth child and second son of Aegon and Rhaenys Targaryen, King and Queen of Westeros. As a young child, Rhaegar was very happy, enjoying the sights of the castle and spending time with his older siblings. When he was only a child of four, his baby sister was born. He felt a certain protectiveness over her, something he'd never really felt before. As the years went by, he began to notice all the attention his elder brother, Aerys, heir to the throne, was receiving. He began to act like his brother, hoping he would receive some extra attention. Eventually, he found himself not wanting to be like his brother, but rather to be better. As soon as he was old enough, he began spending time in the yard practicing with a sword. He was disappointed when he didn't improve, and always found the sword to feel rather large and inhibiting in his hands. He couldn't make it move or be as graceful as his elder brother, and it angered him greatly. One day, he picked up a bow, and instantly felt a connection with it. He was happy to find that his aim slowly started to improve.
As his teenage years came, the bitterness grew, beginning to encompass his father and mother as well as his brother. Rhaegar began to turn to material things for happiness, and while they did not make him fully happy, they did make him feel better. He came to be a very serious boy, still secretly striving for respect. He continued to practice with his bow every day. He even practiced with the sword every now and again, knowing that eventually he would need to know how to use it, should war ever come to King's Landing. One day at the age of four and ten, he suddenly began to notice Jaehaerys more than usual. Her beauty and grace struck him deeper than usual. He found himself wanting to please her whenever possible, and would glance her way more often unconsciously. Every other woman seemed duller by comparison. He did not find the feeling to be strange at all. Targaryens have been marrying siblings and cousins for as long as the house has held the throne. The thought of him having to marry another woman, which he knew would come soon enough, just didn't seem appealing. He did not want one of the cold Starks from Winterfell, nor the Greyjoys, said to be made of iron. He would do his duty to please his father, but he could never imagine loving any other woman.
