Manchu Song â
"What's that in my hand? Your wallet? Correct!"
Nickname(s)/Alias(es)
He's been called everything in the book. Manny, Chu, Mannychuchu, Chu-man...
Age
16
Appearance
Despite his age, Manchu bounces around with a childlike energy, constant mischief in his eye. He sometimes gets this sly look on his face, a too-casual flip of his hair, too-smooth movements, and then you know you're in trouble! Still, there's something humorous about how seriously he takes himself. From the way he carries himself (chest puffed, shoulders squared, head back) you can tell that he thinks he's "all that".
But there is something attractive about his confidence.
Preferred Clothing
He has a very firm idea of what is "debonair" and "handsome" and is actually quite finicky about his appearance. "Hey hey hey, a ladies' man has to keep up with expectations!" If you mess up his clothing, he will immediately put you on the list.
Height
Manchu is short, only about 5'6", which he thinks is a pretty fascinating height.
Yeah, he hates it to death, and any mention of it will immediately put you on his list.
Weight
Skinny, but lean. (A decently well-muscled frame, despite its lightness.)
Hair Color
His longer-than-average brown hair falls to about his chin, constantly messy, getting in his eyes and in the way, but he refuses to cut it; he considers his scruffy appearance to be dashing.
Eye Color
In certain lights, his eyes look gray, and in others they look brown. But they're constantly twinkling, narrowing, widening-- his eyes are very expressive-- so it's hard to study them at any given moment.
Personality
Manchu is like a breath of fresh air, a bright spot in the room, seeming to suck all attention in his direction with his (completely limitless) confidence. He thinks he's the best thing ever, but his good humor and silly demeanor seems to lesson the idiocy of it. He may be conceited, but he's not completely enamored of himself; he takes it as just a fact of life: Manchu Song is gorgeous.
But really it's not his appearance that does it. He's just so cheerfully, so endlessly optimistic-- and what a troublemaker! He'll steal an apple from a cart and upon getting caught just give a sheepish, dimpled smile, so bashful that the cart owner will just sigh and allow him to go on his way. He's sneaky and kind of manipulative, but a funny guy, constant source of humor for other people.
And he's prissy, too! His preening is laughable; he's worse than a fifteen year old girl. He likes fashion, "but in a manly way!" His conceit disappears like mist in the sun when an attractive woman is around. He will drag himself through the dirt in pursuit of a girl. The funny thing is that despite his high opinion of himself, he's constantly rejected.
But that's the beauty of Manchu's confidence. He's such an optimist that he just laughs and brushes it off and chases another skirt, like a playful puppy.
Oddities
Two words: weird. Food.
He will eat the strangest things! Pickled octopus in raspberry sauce, chocolate-covered turnips in ranch dressing... it's like a train wreck; you want to look away but you can't.
Secondly, the list. (Dun dun dun!) It's really uncertain what is meant when Manny says "Oh, you are SO on my list!", but he's usually fuming with rage. The littlest things can get you on and off his list. Mention his height, oh, you're on the list for life, mister! But then two seconds later you compliment his hair and you're off it. It is assumed that being on the list means that you're on his bad side.
+Silliness, goofing around. Lighten up!
+Stealing. He's klepto. Gets him in plenty of trouble, and then he just laughs it off and refuses to see the error of it. His airy ways can be downright frustrating.
+Inciting trouble.
+Trying to attract girls. (Ironically, if a girl actually returns his affection, he'll often be so shocked that he dumps them immediately.)
+Anyone who dislikes the Fire Nation. You're instantly in his good books.
+Clothes, disguises, outfits... basically just stuff, anything new and "in". Especially weapons! There's nothing like a new bit of steel!
Dislikes
-Workaholics, neat freaks, sticks in the mud, do-goodniks. He likes to err on the less-than-legal side of things; it's more fun. And if you disagree, well, then we have a problem.
-The law. Always trying to bring him down.
-The Fire Nation. Not because of any deep tragedy, but because they're jerks, they take things too seriously, and he just has a firmly instilled prejudice against them. There is nothing that will get him more red with rage than seeing Fire Nation conquerors oppressing helpless people.
-Losing, being beaten. Except in the case of women; he's used to that. But if he loses in anything else, he gets sullen.
-Animals...
-...ESPECIALLY reptiles, amphibians, and bugs. "HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP GET THAT THING AWAY FROM ME HOLY CRAP!"
-Authority figures, especially older males. He's got daddy issues. Plus it challenges his self-appointed alpha male status.
Hobbies
Stealing. Hey, it's fun!
Causing trouble, often against peacekeepers and authority figures. Making a ruckus.
Playing pranks.
Fighting, scrapping, posturing, posing.
Playing with his "new toys". "And by toys I mean weapons!"
Meeting new people.
Comedy.
Fears/Phobia(s)
Bugs. Bugs. BUGS.
Also, dogs, cats, birds, fish, frogs, snakes, lizards, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, and any combination thereof.
Water. Not a fear, really, but he can't swim.
Skills/Talents
Stealing, but not just that, all of the skills that come along with it. Sneaking and hiding, going unnoticed, sleight of hand-- but also distractions, disruptions, chaos, and mayhem.
He likes to think that he's good at fighting, but he's just so small...
He's a little charmer. There's something about his playful, carefree, relaxed attitude.
Preferred Weapon
Manchu is not physically strong. He's really not. Oh sure, pick a random guy off the street and he could overpower him, but warriors and benders-- he doesn't compare.
His weapons are like his babies. "I don't think I could love a human baby as much as I love these things!" Perhaps that's an exaggeration. Or at least, I hope...
On Manny's person at any time you can find dozens of tiny, finger-sized daggers, iron knuckles, handcuffs, rope, and-- his coup de grace-- his beloved bamboo-and-rubber-band slingshot, with which he will shoot anything small enough to fit in it.
Fighting Style
Lots of bark and no bite. And much taunting.
Chuey knows he can't physically match up to anyone bigger than him-- or benders-- so he likes to leap around and evade them and use distance weapons such as his much-beloved slingshot. He also doesn't really like to dirty his hands. He'll get out of a fight before engaging (unless he is in the mood for making trouble). He's a coward when any real danger comes along.
He'll try to distract his opponent with sparkling, mischievous grins and friendly, witty remarks.
Personal History
Manchu has no strong ties, neither familial nor friendly. His parents and eighteen siblings were all very kind and loving, if not exasperated by his constant trouble. They owned a rice farm, kind of out in the sticks, or at least out in the middle of nowhere enough that they didn't get much Fire Nation trouble. Nobody in his family but his grandfather was a bender (earth), but still he was very jealous of their powers as well as awed and excited.
(He knows that his family is the best one that anybody could ask for, and he truly loves them, but with eighteen brothers and sisters he sometimes felt a wee bit neglected. Perhaps his kleptomania stems from this-- attention. He sure is a spotlight hog.)
Eventually his wandering, troublesome heart led him to leave them. They were sad to see him go but happy for him. They admonished him to stay out of trouble, gave him some money, and let him be on his way. He hasn't obeyed their request. Immediately Manchu went into the big cities and traveled, seeing the world-- and the atrocities of the Fire Nation. It's made him quite angry, and he taunted every soldier he could, stealing from them also. He's notorious in some parts, but not a famous criminal-- he always manages to weasel out of trouble, even when caught redhanded, pickpocketing.
