Everything was so perfect. Despite her youth, certainly this was her soulmate, her one true love… How had this perfection found her? He was everything she had ever wanted in a man, and then some. She didn’t care about his fin or his magic, only that in his arms she felt like a cherished treasure. They spent blissful days and nights together, wrapped up in each other, far away from civilization.
He had given up on love for good when, one day he swam into the lovely young woman near a secluded island. Fair and delicate, the sickly creature didn't look like she'd last much longer. Worried, he cared for her, watching over her until she returned to health, her cheeks again rosy and her eyes sparkling with life. But what a delight she was! He’d only heard the worst about humans, but she never pointed or stared or gaped. She didn’t try to exploit him. He fell in love before he knew it, and they built a small life together.
Their love, however, had boundaries. Theirs was the tale of the fish and the bird. They could only love at the edge of the shore. At first, this satisfied the two, but as their relationship blossomed, they found an empty place in their love. A thought they hadn’t broached until this strange new idea came to them. Though their little family was perfect, there was, perhaps, room for one more. The longer they thought, the more they wanted that little stranger until the desire persisted so deeply that it almost burned.
The spellbook he found deep under the water, the unassuming thing he brought back to his lover, seemed harmless. They could be together with just one simple incantation, one promise, one bond to last a lifetime. It was an accident, he was no enchanter and she knew nothing of arcana. But before them, this solution. She didn’t even hesitate to agree to give up her legs for fins, and they set to work dreaming of a new life, a new start, a new chance to be happy.
Neither of them, however, expected the widespread consequences of their love. They just wanted to be together. But their sloppy magic resonated throughout the area, wreaking chaos.
The plopped the fish-child into a huge tank and began running test after test on it. Could it breathe air? What did it need to eat? Could it talk? Was it human, or fish? Where had it come from?
Not long after, however, on a little beach in the same town, a small child playing on the beach suddenly disappeared. Surprise and fear immediately burbled up in the other beachgoers, who only saw the child's forlorn water wings, left behind, bobbing gently in the surf. A moment of absolute silence, beside the roar of the waves, and then a shrill scream: a hysterical mother. Moments later, far out, a powerful head and torso rose from the sea, dripping with salt water. The small child babbled in its arms, waving his small hands and cooing. Nearer to shore, a woman surfaced, nothing out of the ordinary except the long, luxuriant locks of blonde hair swirling in the surf around her ... until they saw the tail. She lifted thin-fingered hands and began to sign. The mother, still half dissolved in hysterics, looked around, bewildered. Silence, for a few moments, until a beach goer who knew sign language emerged and began to communicate with the mermaid, relaying what she signed in a soft, grim voice.
After a few frantic calls and more silent discussion, a deal was struck. The terrified merboy was returned to his tearful parents, while the little lab was rebuilt into a huge complex that reached far into the water.
The Mer became more willing participants of the human studies to prevent the thievery of any more of their own. New research on the species was released regularly to the public, and Mer became more common sightings, papers were regularly published, and the two worlds started to try to live together in mutual awareness.
It did not go well.
Humans wanted much from their new found aquatic counterparts. Fishing, exploration, harvesting. Had they been told about the magic all mer harbor, they’d have wanted that to. The mer, meanwhile, wanted retribution. Their oceans were polluted, plastic islands blocked the sun where their children used to play. Ships hurt them and their pets, and all these things needed to be fixed and then needed to end.
Compromise was needed, but it wasn’t found.
His eyes were shining, his voice reaching a wild pitch as he cast the magic over himself and his lover. He could barely contain his excitement as he channeled the magic within himself into the words he spoke. He hardly even needed the book anymore, it was almost as if the words falling from his lips on their own, as if some part of his soul already knew this incantation to bring his lover home.
“As it is spoken, let it be done. Take my form and change it. Change mine leg to fin, mine breath to water, mine aspect from human to mer. Join me to mine partner. As it is spoken let it be done,” she said, her voice stumbling through the words, trembling as she accepted the magic.
As her words faded into nothing, the magic finished, she let out a small gasp. “I feel it!” she cried out to her lover, one hand clapping over her neck, where a strange tingle had started. She felt it too in her legs, in her chest...all over, actually.
As she stood, stock still, the expression of excitement on her face slowly melted. Alarmed, her lover called out to her. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah...it just feels a little strange, is all,” she said faintly.
Her body was starting to move a little of its own accord, her abdomen twitching and her toes curling up. It felt like she was cramping everywhere at once, but if she curled up now, she wouldn’t be able to breathe. Though her neck stung, she couldn’t feel the gill flaps emerging. A moment of panic washed over her, but she quickly calmed her shivering heart by reminding herself that if anything happened, her lover would be there to save her. Everything would be fine. She could take this small amount of pain.
It didn’t stay small for very long. She stood silently as her body twisted and stretched on its own, searing pain tingeing her muscles for a moment before cutting them to the core, reworking her innards. Her skin burned as scales began blossoming on her skin, and her legs began to grow together from the top down.
And then the gills. She felt breathless for a moment, her mouth gaping and gaping and gaping as a fiery sensation stung the sides of her neck, as if the sun itself was slicing into her skin, making new pathways down her throat, infiltrating her lungs. Then she was free. Her body instinctively pushed itself under the water, seeking refuge in the cool liquid, and she didn’t hesitate before taking a deep breath. It raced over her new gills, filling her lungs with air. Her eyes widened under the water--though it had already been clear, now she could see much farther than she ever had before, and the salt no longer stung her scleras. Fins unfurled from what had previously been the soles of her feet, and she made a powerful kick, propelling herself towards her lover, who was smiling at her, one arm out, still a few meters away.
Look at me! she thought at him without even realizing that she was communicating with him with her mind.
You’re amazing! something that almost sounded like his voice, but warmer, sweeter, reverberated in her mind.
She grinned and shot forward, past him, feeling the cool water slide past her face, her body, her scales. She felt amazing! For the first time, she was who she was supposed to be! A mermaid with her merman lover. No more lingering on shorelines, now they could make a real home together!
She twisted around, about to tease him for being a slowpoke, only to see him yanked under the waves, his expression one of shock.
Beloved! she called to him, darting to his depth, her heart racing as he made no response.
As she turned in the water, he surfaced before her, gasping desperately for breath, eyes turning red from the salt of the sea. She grabbed at him, tail pumping furiously, and to her shock, felt legs--two human legs--wrap around her elongated waist. Panic and confusion engulfed her mind as she swam upwards, fingers digging into her lover’s back. They surfaced near the shore, and she stared as he scrambled into the shallows, knees trembling. Her lips parted, gaping as she looked tearfully into his eyes, which were just as filled with regret.
This hadn’t been what they had wanted. What had they done?
But it was their folly, and they resolved right away to suffer it in silence, especially since, as they discovered the first time one of them left to find food, there was a high risk of spontaneous transformations. This unpredictable switching of the pair from mer to human stopped either from going for help. Whenever they were not within sight of each other, it seemed, there was a danger of switching. Not a problem for whoever happened to be human at the time, but for the mer… there had been more than a couple near-death experiences...
Little did the pair know, however, that their magic had not only spawned chaos in their tiny, quiet lives, but in the lives of twenty other humans and mer. Due to the accidental scope of their spell, ten humans and ten mer who had previously made contact with each other for at least a moment were now bonded in the same way as this couple.
Switching randomly from human to mer and back again, the pairs live in a near constant state of fear. They have no idea why this is happening, or how to make it stop. All they know is that they need to stay alive, hide this strange occurrence from their families, and figure out why they feel so drawn to this other who may or may not be a stranger.
