Right before his mother ditched them, she slipped a letter underneath Derricks door. Apparently, she isn't Ricky's real mother and his real mother happens to be a German woman by the name of Natalia. He's been keeping it from his sister for two years.

appearance:
Coming in at 6'2" and towering over his sister, Derrick is a bit more on the tanner side because of outdoor activities. He's lean in muscle but a bit lanky though it doesn't bother him because his long arms help him swim better. His hair is jet black and thick. Short and framed but enough hair to run your fingers through with the tips being curly unless they are brushed out. To accompany that he has a pair of thick but neat eyebrows, dark brown almond-shaped eyes, and a strong jaw and countless moles from his head to his toes. Ricky doesn't have any tattoos or piercings but has thought about getting inked.
personality:
While his sister is bold and sarcastic, Derrick is more on the quiet side but honest. He has a good heart, works hard for himself and his sister, and both of them are family oriented. While tall, Derrick isn't someone who is hard to approach. He's got a strong and gentle aurora about him that invites people in and makes them feel relaxed and secure around him. It's part of his charm, along with his whole boy-next-door look.
He's a truthful guy, for the most part, not having a reason to hide anything other than what he's hiding from his sister. Caring and sweet, it's how his parents raised him but Karin really showed him what it meant after she practically finished raising him. He really holds his sister in high regards and no doubt he'd do the same to the woman of his dreams one day. He also doesn't blame her for what happened to their father but he just wants her to see that before it completely eats her up.
Going into his temper and humor, Ricky isn't easily angered but when he is it's more physical than talking it out but then again he hasn't gotten angry at anyone other than a few guys not taking his sisters 'no' for an answer. Or that thug who was picking on this old man once. Even though he can keep up with Karin's sarcasm, and not that he doesn't like it, Derrick does still prefer more simple amusement anyway.
He has a sense of justice but a whole lot of curiosity which might be the reason why you see him in detention one day. That or his curiosity led him to see/hear something he didn't want to but just so happened to be at the right place at the wrong time.
Growing up in Mountain Brook, while his father worked and mother did house chores, Derrick was always close to his older sister, Karin, following her around and getting into trouble with her. If he wasn't found with her then he was somewhere drawing or asking his mother to help with the chores. He was neither a momma's or daddy's boy and rather liked hanging out by himself if not with his sister or close friends from school. As he got older, around nine or ten Derrick got into baseball, soccer, and other various sports. Once his father took wind of this the two began bonding and doing more father-son things, you know, they found their thing just like Karin had with her mother when they cooked.
Life was calm for some time, for Derrick anyway. Middle school came and he became more active trying out for the baseball team and making it. The games were one of his favorite parts because his mother, father, and sister would all come and cheer him on. Especially Karin with her homemade signs. Even in school, Derrick looked up to his older sister. What could he say? She's always there for him no matter what. A week goes by and one night, Derrick's mother gets a call on the phone. Her husband and daughter were involved in a really bad car accident and needed to come down to the hospital as fast as they could. When they got there, they found out that Derricks father didn't survive which absolutely broke his mother.
With Karin still being worked on, and finding out that his father is dead all while his mother is crying in the chair, Derrick was stuck pacing, frustrated and on the verge of breaking down himself. He did some breathing exercises that Karin taught him so he could compose himself and face his mother but as soon as he sits down next to her and wraps his arms around her, she hugs him so tight that he just begins to cry too. After two hours of watching his mother cry, and ask to see her daughter, they are finally done with Karin and are able to see her. She doesn't wake up right away but when she does Derrick makes sure that he's the first person she sees. There is instant recognition but then he notices Karin's eyes go frantic and teary. She tries asking for her father but Derrick shakes his head before her sore throat allows her to say anything. She gets it but he could also see her heart break right in front of his eyes and he couldn't do anything. Karin then begins re-telling the drive home, blames herself for everything right in front of them but while Derrick comforts her he notices his mother stiffen and eyes go hard.
After that, Ricky stays with his sister while surprisingly to the both of them, their mother decides to leave. The two were quiet the whole time, avoiding the subject of their dad while they watched old cartoons on the can-it-be-any-farther hospital t.v until Karin fell asleep due to the meds followed by Derrick after all the emotional exhaustion. After two weeks of Karin being back home, it was obvious their mother tried to avoid her. Derrick could see Karin growing more isolated from her mother and he didn't know how to fix it. Then his mother began to drink, which just brought out her anger and sorrow. A couple of times did he overhear her spitting insults at Karin when she thought he wasn't there and he didn't understand why Karin never said anything or why she never let him say anything about it.
It finally got to a point where his once kind mother was just a bitter drunk. They tried to avoid her in the house then they would take care of her when she finally passed out. Karin got into pot to cope with the stress and to earn money for them since their mother was currently... unavailable. Derrick didn't want her too but he couldn't stop her when she was that determined so he let it be. Even tried to help before she almost ate him alive and gave him a speech about what if he was caught with it and thrown in jail. Once things felt like they were getting back to normal besides their mother, they wake up to find her gone one morning. She leaves a note for them in her bedroom that doesn't reveal anything about where she's going but only how sorry she is. Derrick doesn't share more than a teary eye but he can see that it bothered his sister, even if she didn't talk about it.
Ricky goes back to his room and finds an envelope that was slipped under his door and didn't notice. He picked it up and read it and sometimes he wished he didn't? Just because he wouldn't be stuck with the nagging question of who was this woman Natalia who was supposedly his real mother? He never tells Karin because he is conflicted himself and can never find the right moment. He also doesn't know how she'd react to it which scares him even more. Eventually, Karin fully takes charge and does all she can do make Derrick's life as normal as it once was before. In a happier time. The both of them keep the house afloat while attending school. Karin sending in the house payments as if she was her mother with drug money and cooking while Derrick kept it clean. It was hard that first year for two teenagers to be living like fully grown adults, his sister more so. He got a job soon after she graduated, being a senior himself now and wanting to help out after obeying Karin to only focus on school. He even encouraged Karin to go through with college when she began deciding against it, getting government help which eased the stress of costs.
