Rowan is definitely one of those kids who's overlooked at the academy. When you really dive into the backbone of his personality, you can see that he is unnoticed for a couple of different reasons. First of all, Rowan doesn't have any useful skill sets to bring to the table. (except for magic, of course) He's not strong, athletic, artistic, or really all that popular. He has a fairly average build, and a fairly average appearance. There's nothing quite special and nothing very different about him. You'll be more likely to find him listening in on a conversation or spending short periods of time in the library or in his room. Although he may not be extensively admired by the general public, Rowan does make a great and loyal companion. He'd much rather be the sidekick than the hero saving the day.
Rowan is also clumsy to a substantial extent. He's constantly making mistakes and miscalculations. He used to be very self-critical about it, but now he's learned to accept his ineptness. He can also be very awkward, another reason for his average social standings. Because of his clumsiness, Rowan's friends and acquaintances like to make him the butt of their jokes. He doesn't mind this, unless it gets out of hand. Emotionally, Rowan is one to keep his feelings locked inside. If someone is harshly teasing him, he won't bother to defend himself. He's easy to criticize, and easy to persuade. Rowan is very gullible, and finds himself believing things that actually make no sense. Because of his embarrassing traits, some people consider him immature.
There is one thing about Rowan, however, that is quite different from most people: his spirituality. Rowan is of Wiccan descent, and so he is very in-tune with nature, symbols, and psychic-oriented things. This means that he is very traditional, and hasn't experienced most modern things, such as television, video games, the internet, and other things. He also isn't very trendy, and is confused when new phrases and crazes occur. He tends to keep his spirituality a secret, as he doesn't want to appear as a freak to some people. He does reveal it to people he considers close friends. Then again, he's weak and inexperienced, so he's not as powerful as most people think he is. Although, he has been able to cast some spells, curses and hexes in the past. Be nice to him, and he may just cast a hex on an enemy for you. However, you have to readily persuade him, as he is kind and gets very nervous when he does something wrong. Not only that, but Rowan gets nervous when he's doing something important in general, such as battling, competing in sports, or taking a test. Like most of people in the academy, the young demigod has his fair share of insecurities, but he ignores them. Unless of course, you put him in a moody behavior. Then he'll reveal HIS WHOLE MIND to you.
Jonah Tinne was a humble and a simple man. He had a wife. She was a cop. They were together for many years. They had three children together. One New Year's Eve, she was working. She found herself in a shootout. She was shot. She died. Jonah was never the same again.
Two years later, Jonah met a strange cloaked woman at a bar with his friends. While watching her from afar, he noticed a couple of drunk men harassing her. Jonah, being of high morales and having a great sense of courage, stuck up for the woman. Afterwards, she thanked him. Jonah ended up giving her a ride home, as she didn't have a car. As thanks, she showed him her interesting house. That night, he was introduced to Wiccan beliefs, as the woman called herself a 'witch'. He ended up staying at her house much longer than he had planned.
Jonah and the woman had a kid together, who they named Rowan. Unexpectedly, the woman left, even though Jonah and his children were living at her house in Salem. It wasn't until a couple years later that he met another woman by the name of Christine. She was Wiccan as well. They got married, and had a child together. The Tinne family now consisted of Jonah, his wife, Christine, the oldest daughter, Marissa, twins Dalton and Lily, Rowan, and the youngest, Jasper. This is how the family stayed for many more years.
Rowan had a relatively normal life growing up. The family was pretty poor, but they were able to support themselves. Rowan was interested in so many things as a child, and he was naturally curious. He never really found his place in anything, though. He tried out for many sports, but was never any good enough to make it in. He tried theater, but always had immense stage fright the day of the show. Every year, he ran for student council, but never even got a minor position. However, he always kept a happy face through it all. When depressed, Rowan would always reside in the comfort of his pet dog. It was as though he knew what it was saying, because whenever he was around, his dog would become alert, pleased, and obedient. Rowan was even able to train the dog so well enough that it won dozens of dog shows. It seemed like training the dog was the only thing he was good at.
The end of elementary school and the beginning of high school was a challenge for Rowan. Things got harder to handle, such as schoolwork, activities, and even friends. To them, Rowan was starting to get boring. He was slow, and could not keep up with the fast pace of adolescence. It was simply because of how he was raised, but Rowan thought there was a problem with him himself. Again, he tried to fit in somewhere, but because of his limited skills and the achievements of his older brother and sisters, he could not prove himself to others. One unfortunate day, when bullies were chasing him through the streets, he ran out of breath and started panting in the middle of sidewalk. He knew he was dead meat with the approach of his attackers, but he didn't care. He just wished as hard as he could that he would become invisible.
When the bullies approached him, they completely ignored him. They looked around as if they were searching for someone, and then left. Rowan looked down to check himself for cuts and bruises, but when he did, he couldn't see his body. Realizing he had turned invisible, he told his family what had happened when he got home from school. It was then that the family pieced together his true origins. His father had told him that he was born to a woman named Hecate. His father remembered her saying she was special, but he didn't know how. It was then that Rowan's mother confessed that her brother, Rowan's uncle, was also born of Hecate. Rowan found out that he was born to the goddess of magic, sorcery and necromancy.
Wanting to know more about his demigod abilities, Rowan consulted his uncle. He gave the young demigod his old staff, and a spell book. His uncle told him that in order to cast spells, he would have to use the staff and the spell book. Once he got more experienced, he would be able to cast spells verbally and even mentally. Knowing Rowan, his uncle knew that he needed something strong that would help him develop his powers, like training wheels on a bike. That was the reasoning behind giving him his old staff and spell book. The young demigod learned all that he could, and was able to cast a few spells successfully. Impressed, his uncle recommended him to join Mount Olympus Academy for demigods. Rowan agreed, and his attending his first year at the academy.
