James is an 18 year old Pokemon trainer born and raised in Eterna City. Forever by his side is a special Pokemon, Shirona. Shirona is a shiny Gardevoir as she is blue rather than the average green. The two met when James was taking a stroll through the forest, against his mother's warnings when he was 13, thinking he could handle it by now. He saw a small blue Ralts, badly hurt already being attacked by some Gastly's. Not stopping to wonder how the Ralts even got there, James hopped the fence to the old house in the forest to go save the Ralts. He took a few attacks but grabbed the Ralts and ran for home. When he got there, he let the Ralts sleep on his bed and begged his mother to help her as his mother worked at a Pokecenter. Ralts was taken to a center and looked over. She was pretty banged up. Apparently she had tried climbing a tree and fell off from high up as she had some fractures. She also became sick from Gastly's gaseous form. The next few weeks were spent with James sleeping on the floor while Ralts took his bed. He cared for her while she was unable to do so for herself.

One day, Ralts spoke to James outright, saying "Thank you" which surprised him, not thinking Pokemon could talk. When she was fully healed, Ralts left during the night. When James woke up due to the door being closed and saw this, he ran out searching for her. He caught a glimpse of her heading into the forest again so he ran after her. This time however, James was stopped by a couple of men who meant him harm. From the forest came a Shadow Sneak which shot up under one of the men, incapacitating him and the other ran away from the sight, followed by the Ralts rushing over to James with a handful of flowers.

"You got those...for me?" asked a startled James who responded by hugging Ralts. Ralts then asked for James to give her a name of her own. She would see James call the other kids by names and she wanted one for herself. James gave her the name of Shirona, his great grandmother's name. Shirona was delighted and stayed with James for the next while. James finally asked how Shirona came to be near the city since Ralts live further south near Hearthome City. Shirona says she hatched from an egg near that old house. James' mother said that a Staravia may have picked up the egg and brought it over. Shirona said she wasn't that long from hatching when she met James, only a few weeks. James was surprised at how she picked up the languages but she admitted she just spent the time reading through the phonics that were in the cupboard while living with James.

Upon having a Pokemon of his own, James and Shirona eventually set out on their adventure in Sinnoh. Over the course of their adventure, James had saved other Pokemon, a drowning Gibble who couldn't swim, an abandoned Eevee, a Starly whose wing was broken, and a Shinx who picked a fight with a group of Geodudes. He received a Chimchar from Prof. Rowan after he was impressed by James having a team of Pokemon that were not in pokeballs, having formed a very deep bond of friendship with them.

James raised those Pokemon like they were family. James did buy some pokeballs so that his Pokemon could rest in them instead of always walking. Shirona however, refused to be inside one, wanting to always be with James and he obliged. Through his journeys, his team became stronger and even more bonded together. With ease he took the eight badges of the leaders throughout the region, he encountered Team Galactic many times but simply breezed passed them. While he was in Victory road, nearing the end, he heard word of them being disbanded. While he utterly hated what Team Galactic was and did, he never expressly sought them out after being told by Looker to stand down on the case. Assured that an extremely capable trainer was on the job. James knew he meant Dawn, whom he'd met when she came to Eterna for Gardina's badge. Trusting Dawn he decided to stay out of it, like Looker suggested.

James may not always act serious, but when the going gets tough, he can get rough. James tends to shift emotions to the point of extreme when he does shift them at all. He hates being an angry person but has had to let loose a few times. While he was in Hearthome, about to take on Fantina, he heard of a group of Team Galactic grunts who stole Pokemon from trainers in the park were escaping to Veilstone. Outraged, he had Asuka track them as he chased them down. Not only did he thrash their Pokemon, he used explicit force on them, in the way of threatening to sick Garchomp on them and even himself angrily holding one of the guys by his collar and toss him against a wall giving verbal threats and even straight decking one of the smart-asses, to make them release the stolen Pokemon back to their trainers. With their arms twisted behind their backs, they gave back the stolen Pokemon and ran off. James, sick of himself from having gotten angry, went home to Eterna City and just crashed in his room for a week to cool off. The only other time he's ever gotten serious is when he was in Floaroma Town getting some flowers for his mother and for Fafnir. Despite Dawn having dealt with Mars, Team Galactic still tried to come back and take over the Valley Windworks. Cue James storming the location and moments later almost a dozen grunts flee the area, some with bruises, others without even their Pokemon. After buying the flowers, he went back home, gave his mom them as it was her birthday, and promptly proceeded to punish himself for getting angry again.

James and Shirona eventually reached the Elite Four's domain, the Pokemon League. It was a tough road ahead but Vasuman and Raijin beat back Aaron, Asuka and Skadi beat Bertha together, Flint fell to Fafnir's tidal waves, Shirona closed Lucien's book, and finally the team beat Cynthia after a fairly hard fight with Cynthia's team almost stomping James at every turn. While his team could match Cynthia's in power, Cynthia's skill was easily beating him down. Eventually James won thanks to Skadi's snow cloak ability saving her from being defeated many times and together they took down the final Pokemon in the Champion's roster. James was awarded a special pin which he gratefully took and, with the agreement of his team, gave it to Shirona. She wears it with pride. James then left without taking the title of Champion, explaining to Cynthia that he just wanted to explore other regions. He bid her farewell and left on his worldly journey, his "family" with him all the way. A special issue magazine came out in that following day with the front headline "Rookie's Lucky Break!" and a story detailing the lucky moment where Skadi's Snow Cloak lead James to victory against the Champion Cynthia.

After over 4 years of traveling and collecting badges, James found himself stepping off a boat in the Unova region's Castelia City, eager for a new adventure.

James has a special ability to heal his wounds. While this does not heal his stamina and only restores as much hp as leftovers, he has the uncanny ability that when pushed to the brink, his wounds tend to heal.

James eagerly jumped off the boat onto the pier, excited as he looked around. He the quickly turned and offered a hand to his partner Gardevoir, Shirona. She took the hand and stepped down, giving him a cordial "Thank you."

"AlllRIGHT! Brand new region for exploring! I really liked that Kanto place last time! Almia was pretty interesting, though a little sad there weren't any badges there to get... None were better than Sinoh though, Though that view from Mt. Silver was close... I wonder how this place holds up? Unova, eh? Heard some cool stuff about it!"

"Do try not to get in over your head, James. This is a new region and thus new challenges and dangers lurk here! Always be cautious."

"Oh, you're right. Thanks for bringing me back down to Earth, Shirona~ Hmm, so from what I know... The first gym is in Striathalon City."

"Striaton,"

"Striaton. Got it. Though the brochure I have is a little old... I wonder if those brothers are still the leader of that gym... Well best way to find out is to go there! Best get asking the locals for directions."

"Yes, let's not get lost like back in Ilex Forest."

"Still ragging on me for that... Well it was my fault anyway."

With that miniature argument out of the way, James and Shirona left the pier and walked around looking for a local to talk to.

After a bit of wandering, James did receive directions to Striaton City, but he also heard about a gym leader in this very city as well. A man by the name of Burgh. As the duo walked to the gym, they talked about how the fight might go.

"So bug types is the first gym I'm going to fight... That's quite different from the normal patterns."

"It should not be too hard, James. I'm sure Vasuman and Asuka could handle the situation themselves. While bug types are nothing to take lightly, I don't perceive any major problems."

"Well your hunches are usually never wrong. I was thinking the same thing but... This guy is supposedly an artist."

"What, pray tell, does that have to do with it?"

"I'm spit-balling here, but it may have something to do where he is more about finesse than power. Like how Fantina's fight was. And if he is going for finesse, he likely has some tricks up his sleeve. He didn't get to become a gym leader just because he likes bugs. There has to be something to him that makes him strong enough to be considered one. I mean, Bugsy knocked out Asuka and Skadi easily because I wasn't expecting a few of his moves. Aaron's Yanmega also gave you guys a tough time for the same reason. I'm not going to let that happen this time!"

"You do have something of a point. No matter though, we shall see when we get there"

"Man, just thinking about this is getting me pumped! Hm... Though I'll lead with Skadi."

"Really? Why her?"

"Well if I lead with her, then I can gauge his material. Ice types are neutral to bug types and the same to the reverse of that. As much as I dislike putting any of you guys into the fray without proper strategy, it needs to happen. So in advance, could you inform Skadi?"

"Very well. As you know I will not be participating in this gym battle very much."

"Yeah, you dislike bugs a lot. Well, that's that for a strategy meeting. Normally I let you help more but, I think I got this one."

After their little banter, James finds himself at the door to the gym. He gives it a once over, reads the sign and heads on in. Inside the gym there were cocoons and web strands everywhere. There were the obvious holes in the cocoons, a giant line and a supposed exit just above them or off to the side of them depending on the direction of the strand. Shirona simply shuddered, spiders being her least favourite thing on the planet. James wasn't making any noises of excitement or even expressions of amazement. His face is locked in a serious stare as he studied the place and tried to glean what he could from it all.

"Right. The strands seem to connect to the top which I imagine is where he resides. As per usual, there will be resistance along the way I would think. A bit of a winding trail as well so getting lost might happen but considering how open the area is, it won't be hard to regain bearings. Alright, if you're done freaking out, I think we'll head into that cocoon."

"Do I have to? Ugh... Please just...don't be slimy..."

The two walk into a cocoon and get whisked away to wherever it takes them.

The two began their arduous journey to the top of the spindly, stringy gym. They would gather right away that this was almost like a multi-leveled maze of some sort as there were many cocoons that seemed to take people many different directions. What made it harder to decipher was how the strings and string bridges and cocoons and cocoon paths all seemed to intertwine around each other and make efficient traversing difficult. From James's perspective down below, it was as much art and flamboyance as it was tricky.

But something seemed off.

It might've taken a little bit to notice. It might've taken no time at all. But they would soon notice that no one appeared to be present. It was less rumor and more blatant fact that there would be miniature fights on the way to the Gym Leader's room, although the number and difficulty varied from gym to gym. But there was actually no one waiting for him. No one ready to stop him or battle him or test his might. In fact, there wasn't even a greeter at the door, he would realize.

Was Burgh even here?

He could go back and reassess the situation and it's circumstances, or he could venture onward and see if there was someone at the top of this tower of a gym.

"OK....this is unsettling"

"Oh, like the crawling inside pupae wasn't?"

"Well, that kind of was, but it's the fact that nobody is here... I'm aware that some insects use ambush tactics on prey and I was sort of expecting that here...But there is nobody at all... Can you tell me if he's up there or not?"

"I'm a telepath, not a radar"

"Good point, sorry. Well, we'll just keep going up then."

"Eugh...."

"You know....I never did bring this up before but, you're acting a lot more human than a Pokemon"

"Well look who I am around all day! And it is likely just your imagination. Us Pokemon are about as diverse in attitudes as you humans are."

"Fair point. Well whatever. Let's see if bug boy's at the top, I mean they didn't stop us from entering like when Roark wasn't in his gym. Onward to the next gross pupae!"

Shirona simply sighs and follows James as they continue their climb. While Shirona could just look into the future as her species is capable of, she knows James doesn't like relying on that trait so she doesn't bother with it. She does silently hope that Burgh is not present because she doesn't wish to see actual bugs, but she also hopes that he is there because that would make James happy. They eventually reach the top of the empty tower and look around for Burgh.

The two of them walked into the main room, where a dazzling sight awaited them. Every color of the rainbow was splashed on every floor and ceiling, like someone wrapped the room up like a tee shirt and dipped it repeatedly into multiple buckets of paint. The colors blended with one another perfectly and gave the room an overall warm shade to walk into. There were varied strings strewn about the place, but they seemed carefully placed. Almost like it was random...only it wasn't.

But the more interesting part was the Gym Leader seated properly on a chair in the middle of the room, eyes glued to a screen in one of the far reaches of the room. There appeared to be a Pokemon Battle happening on screen and it appeared to be streaming.

Burgh turned around when the door was opened and raised a brow.

"Hmm...hello there!" he greeted politely, standing up and brushing off his salmon-colored pants, "I wasn't expecting visitors, to be honest. Most people are watching the Pokemon Battle of the century right now. I hope you don't mind my unpreparedness."

James, not one for art, was surprised at first by all the colours but that surprise faded rather quickly. Shirona acknowledged it and made her judgments. Seeing as Jame's was new to this region, he had no idea about the big fight as he only spoke to three locals who were likely out of the loop as well.

"Oh! Sorry to interrupt then, Burgh. I had no idea a big event was going on! You're free to watch it if you wish."

"Oh please tell me we don't get to fight the bug master," Shirona thought to herself.

"I thought it was odd that nobody was in the gym, not even the usual pep-talker by the front. Might I ask what this event is that captivated so many people, even gym leaders? I'm nobody special mind you, just a traveling badge collector named James Pentil, so no need to feel obligated or anything, sir."

One thing to note would be the presence of the Sinoh Champ ribbon you get for defeating the champion in the Sinoh region. It was on the shiny blue Gardevoir's neck as it was made into a necklace/choker combination. Seems he was a trainer back when those were still in circulation. The next to talk was Shirona, except unlike most psychic pokemon who only seem to be able to speak in the minds of others, Shirona spoke out loud the same as any human could. Her voice was gentle and mature, a hint of sultriness was with it as well, fitting of her looks.

"Well if I may make my observations, it would seem like just a regular pokemon battle. But that wouldn't happen to be that grand arena, would it? I hear big contenders show up a lot to test their mettle against each other."

"Wait, the grand arena is HERE? Seriously? I must have forgotten that fact...Oh! This is my partner, Shirona."

"It is nice to meet you, Burgh. You have quite a reputation in this city."

"No, no. It's fine," Burgh smiled politely as he reassured James, "It's my duty as the Castelia City Gym Leader to uphold the tradition of the Gym challenge and give challengers the opportunity to earn my illustrious badge."

His smile continued as James asked the question, but a curious brow flared up, "Oh, but these two on the screen would happen to be the biggest of contenders! A young, spunky lady named Emiko Touko has challenged the Grand Champion Iris for her title. And having met and worked with both of those fine heroines, either one would suit the role perfectly. Whoever wins would become the spokesperson for Ruula and the people who live here, including you and I. I take it you must not be from around these parts?"

His curious stare went to the shiny Gardevoir, who had introduced herself telepathically into his head, "Interesting that you're wearing that particular ribbon, dear Shirona. And you're named after the Champion of the Sinnoh Region, hmm? Are you two from there then?"

"Actually, Shirona was my great grandmother's name. Back when Shirona here was just a Ralts, she asked me to give her a name and so I did~"

Shirona made it a point to speak out loud some more, "I can attest to the truth of his tale. I have been with him since I have hatched from an egg and wandered into the Eterna Forest alone. This ribbon is for defeating the Champion of the Sinoh Region. It was given to us by the Cynthia herself, and James gave it to me to wear. Cynthia did say something similar as I do share the name Shirona with her, but it wasn't for that reason. The ribbon is much like a badge, earned from a victory."

"It was honestly just a lucky break and less an actual win. She was kicking our asses pretty hard and then Skadi happened to get lucky with some dodges and we pulled out a win. But yes, we aren't from here. Born and raised in Eterna back in Sinoh and I've been to the regions of Hoenn, Johto, Almia, Kanto and now, Unova. I'm just a wandering badge collector now. I have never been here before but it is not the first I have heard of Iris, kid prodigy as I hear it. First I've heard of this Emiko though, certainly sounds like a big once-in-a-lifetime kind of battle! Challenging the grand champion of champions head on!"

"We can certainly come back another time if you wish to watch this event, Burgh. We are in no rush."

"That and you just don't like bugs"

"Of course I don't! That time we went through Viridian Forest was horrible!"

"Oh it was just a Caterpie! They're harmless!"

"It was gross! Crawling over my head like that...Ick."

James just chuckled at his flustered partner. They certainly bickered like old friends do. James began to talk about another bug type to Shirona and she just covered her ears.

"You're lucky I don't know hyper voice!!"

"Oh...right... Sorry, I'll stop."

"Thank you. I'm sorry you had to witness us bicker like that, Burgh."

The Castelia City Gym Leader smiled and even chuckled a little bit at their banter, "No need to worry about such a thing. In all honesty, it's a nice chance of pace. And it's what separates the great trainers from the good ones. Connecting with Pokemon is a fleeting art that feels like it's dissipating more and more in recent years, so it's always a warm welcome to see such companionship on display."

Burgh closed his eyes and elegantly pulled a PokeBall from his belt and held it between two fingers, "But let's get down to business. I do not mind a worthy challenge at any point, even if the biggest Pokemon battle publicity will ever see is raging throughout. You seem to know you fight, so I won't be taking it easy on you. I've got a lot of missing staff to accommodate for, after all. But I will accept your challenge to try and obtain my gym badge, if you believe you are worthy of it!"

He still held that confident grin across his face, one full of bright and elegant energy and tasty flourish, "Let me know when you are ready and we shall begin."

"Oh, now we're talking! Let's go Skadi!"

James took out a premier pokeball and let loose a Glaceon in a flash of red and white. The ice fox stood in front of him. It let out it's usual cry and took up an offensive stance.

"I'll lead with her."

James had nothing flashy aside from the ball, just simple movements. He wasn't one for finesse and flair after all. Shirona simply took some steps back so as to stay out of the battle, for now.

"Good luck, Skadi."

"Gooaweeo!"

"Oooo, a Glaceon?" Burgh hummed, "You don't see too many trainers use this evolution of Eevee too much. Such an elegant and graceful Pokemon." He glanced at the PokeBall in his hand and let loose his first Pokemon, revealing a bug-type that seemed to be floating. His entire body was wrapped in a dark grey cloth of some sort, the end of which fluttered behind him. Only his head was visible, a pink blob with green stripes going down each cheek and a design in the center of his forehead. His eyes were shrouded in shadow and glanced up darkly at his opponent. This was Accelgor.

"Let's see how much power you got on your side! Accelgor, use Guard Split!"

The Accelgor hummed and was suddenly imbued with energy. Glaceon would feel a strand of Psychic energy pass through her, feeling a change as her toughness would grow weaker. Meanwhile, the change would happen on his side as well, rendering the Accelgor as sound defensively as the Glaceon.

"Shirona, mind telling me what that does?"

"Guard split, simply put, just makes the defense of the user equal to the target by averaging both"

"Fun. Skadi, Hail!"

"Gooweeao!"

Glaceon gave a cry and hail began falling at a rapid pace from clouds that magically formed above. It would seem to all but James and Shirona that Skadi had faded into the storm.

James would begin to think to himself, "Skadi doesn't have much defense on her...Why would he do that? Unless his has low defense as well and he's making Skadi easier to take out... Hm... Well, he can't take Skadi's evasion, or the next trick..."

James kept a good poker face during his thought process.

Burgh glanced up at the cloudy sky, watching the ice falling around them and clapping at the spectacle, "A classic Ice-Type move. And it gives you a lot more options and a little bit more free reign. But before you unleash your Blizzard, let me show you something first."

The Accelgor was hurt a little bit by the hail, but he darted like a bullet to the edge of the ring, knowing full well what was going to come next.

"Accelgor!" Burgh commanded, "Focus Blast!"

He closed his eyes and summoned a giant blue beam of power, sending it rocketing towards the general direction of Glaceon. It was a very powerful Fighting-Type attack brought forth by the fighting spirit within, one that did lack some accuracy, but if the strength did find it's target, it would come at least very close to knocking Skadi out. High risk for high reward.

Skadi watched as the blast whizzed right over her head. James was internally sweating buckets but kept his poker face strong. Thankfully it missed but barely.

"Don't rest on your laurels, Skadi! Aurora Veil! Let's mitigate the next few hits!"

Glaceon gives another cry as light shines around her, revealing her true location for a moment before she fades back out into the storm as hail continued to fall.

"Bold move firing that against a cloaked Glaceon, I like your gusto. I figured you'd go for finesse rather than power when I came here, considering you're an artist and all. With that move...I can see you fall for both finesse and power. I'll have to step up my game a little!"

Burgh smiled at the compliment, "Finesse and power are both fine strategies to have, but you need a balancing of the two to truly be effective. But I also see a little finesse on your end of things as well. Two turns in and you've already set up a pretty tough defense for me to try and overcome. Accelgor, use Focus Blast again!"

The Accelgor was once again darting around rapidly as he zipped across the way and fired another high energy beam at the general vicinity of the Glaceon. It was a little easier now since she had revealed her location for a split second and caused the Accelgor to realign his trajectory slightly. This attack felt like it had a better chance of finding it's mark.

As the blast entered the hailstorm, it appeared at the other side and hit a wall. It would seem Skadi evaded it easily but from James' position, she narrowly avoided it as it practically scraped across her as she ducked. James panicked on the inside upon seeing that, worried for the safety of Skadi.

"Y-You alright there, girl? I don't think you could take many of those...That's two evaded but...Geh, no point in thinking about that! Do what you can, Skadi! Let's try to confuse them! Water Pulse!"

From the hailstorm comes a ring of water that upon contact releases ultrasonic waves in an attempt to confuse Accelgor.

James began internally strategizing again, "Come on....If he gets confused then that gives Skadi some extra safety here which means we can whittle him down. But if he switches out, then we have a new contestant to deal with... I've heard about his Leavanny, being tough... I don't know what that is, but if that's the toughest he's got... and if this Accelgor here is already giving us trouble his Leavanny...Ngh...I may have to rely on Asuka. This guy is not Bugsy with his pushover team," James concluded his thoughts, but his poker face slipped a little, showing worry for a second.

"It's not about winning or losing, Skadi! Just do your best!"

"Gowee!"

The Accelgor saw the ring appear suddenly through the hail storm and made an attempt to dart just right of the ring gushing towards him. But he saw the attack too late. The right side of the ring smacked into him and he collapsed, dazed and confused. In spite of this, Burgh grinned.

"Well played. You're doing better than you believe you are. Trust me when I say that. You really haven't done too much damage to Accelgor, but you're doing consistent damage to him and that's good. I'm gonna make it a bit harder for you, though. Accelgor, use spikes!"

The Accelgor closed it's eyes through it's confused state and brought forth a plethora of spiky rocks that surrounded James's side of the field. Now, anytime that they wanted to switch Pokemon, they would take a bit of damage. With each move, this Bug-Type user was proving to be more versatile than the type specialty eluded to.

"Heh, Good shot Skadi! And nice move, Burgh, trading blows with Skadi's Hail for Accelgor's Spikes. Alright. I have ways around that. But let's go with some more damage here! Skadi, Ice Beam!"

A solid beam of ice shot out of the storm much like the water pulse. It headed straight for confused Accelgor.

"This oughtta do some damage. Ice is neutral to bug so there's no resistance if this hits!"

The Accelgor, especially in it's confused state, could barely recognize the attack. But it was too late to dodge. The impact sent the speedy Bug-Type flying back and hitting the ground. Just enough damage had been done to render him being unable to continue further. One Bug-Type down.

Five more to go.

"Impressive," Burgh complimented as he recalled his fainted Pokemon, "I can see why you defeated Shirona so easily then. But we've a long way to go before I consider myself defeated. Durant, let's do this!"

The red light dissipated and who remained but an ant-like Pokemon covered in steel and glinting in the light. It was certainly an intimidating guy with it's steel mandibles and it's eerie red eyes.

The Gym Leader gave a two finger salute as he stood proud, "Now this is where things get serious! Durant, let's kick things off with Rock Slide!"

The Durant arched his back and clamped his mandibles together. A sudden swarm of rocks all but covered the entirety of James's side of the field. If that Hail Storm couldn't conceal her, her only hope would be to hide between the rocks that would pile upon her. Otherwise, she would be rocked pretty hard and maybe even flinch too hard to unleash another attack of hers.

"SKADI! You alright!" James yelled out, taking a couple steps towards Skadi.

The ice fox gave a nod before getting back on her feet after having been floored by the rocks. James let out a sigh of relief and went back to his original position.

"The heck is a Durant? Shirona, tell me you know about that one?"

"Durant? It's Bug and I think Steel typed as well. A hefty challenge for Skadi"

"Tch....Alright. Skadi I'm calling you ba-"

"Gowee!!

"She wants to stay in. Says she can handle it."

".....I trust you. He may be resistant to it, but it'll still hurt, Frost Breath!"

Skadi lets out a subzero breath attack that feels more like an attack on the bones than the flesh. Even to a resistant type, that cold saps away at the stamina.
