a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Tiko

Description

ImageName: Shelby Lockhart
Age: 36
Species: Human
Places of Birth: Cordelia, Aelora
Current Residence: Windcrest, Terra
Occupation(s): Knight of Le'thorian, Patronus

Though Shelby did not find her calling as a Knight of Le'thorian until she was already thirty-two years old, she has garnered a great deal of respect among her fellow knights as she has risen quickly through their ranks. Shelby is driven by a fervent passion for her patron, Le'thorian, and is a fierce combatant on the field of battle.

As a paladin Shelby can draw upon Le'thorian's strength to aid her in times of need - though the strength of this aid is directly influenced by Shelby's faith, and the faith of Le'thorian's of followers.

Shelby currently holds the rank of Knight Captain within the order, and serves as Captain of the Windcrest Garrison.

So begins...

Two Aschen Marines squeezed the stocks of their rifles outside as they heard some kind of rustling from a nearby haystack.

Inside the orphanage Admiral Nagala was standing quietly and taking in the sights. It seemed that everyone here knew who she was, or it was perhaps the uniform she wore.

Clasping her hands in front of her, she stepped into the orphanage, and one of the Marines behind her closed the door behind them.

"I Imagine my reputation precedes me." She said, addressing Gina as she extended a hand. "Sheila Nagala, Fleet Admiral of the Imperial fleet." She said, and should Gina take her hand, she would continue. "I've come to make donations to the Orphanage, medical supplies, food, and clean water, as well as heating equipment, toiletries, and linens." The Admiral added, before she turned to examine the orphanage, to determine where best to send aid.

She promptly turned to then greet Cináed.

"Hello." She said, politely inclining her head.

Roan, having been bewildered by everything that’s happened so suddenly, decides it would be safest to put the package down before he ended up dropping it.

“Hey, Gina. Where can I set this before dropping it?” Roan asked the owner of the orphanage.

“Take it on into the kitchen. Adriaan is in there washing pots,” Gina replied.

Roan nodded and headed into the kitchen. He set the package on top of a counter, hopefully out of reach of the kids should they become curious. He looked over at Adriaan, who was busy scrubbing out an enormous pot.

“Hey, Adriaan. I see you’ve become accustomed to scullery work,” Roan said with a smirk.

As the time wore on people were beginning to grow more restless.

"Hey," Adriaan said as he noticed Shelby moving past. He kept his voice low so as to not alarm anyone nearby. "Has anyone seen him yet?"

Shelby shook her head.

"Maybe we should send a few people out looking for him," Adriaan recommended. "I'm sure it's nothing, but you know how these things can go..."

"I can pass word along to some of the men out in the streets. I don't want to create a stir," Shelby explained.

"I agree," Adriaan replied.

Shelby moved on to exchange a few words with some of the Le'thorian Knights to get a few men out looking for Franklin.

It was several days later when a ship was spotted going down just outside the city. Deep furrows had been plowed through the snow by its less than graceful impact and steam was rising off it as the heat of the vessel evaporated the snow and ice it had settled to a stop upon.

There was damage all over its hull, and the militiaman and Knights of Le'thorian that were on watch kept an eye out for further vessels arriving in pursuit of the felled ship.

It was another fifteen minutes before some men had been mobilized to go investigate the crash. The men were a mingling of the city militia and Le'thorian knights headed by Shelby Lockhart. It was Shelby who took the lead as she trudged through the knee high snow to reach the vessel.

Those keeping watch would just barely notice the black speck in the sky, moving from the northern horizon with a blue flicker when overhead. The black speck would steadily grow larger as it made a wide spiral downwards towards the crash site. The speck seemed in no rush, but soundlessly drifted in the sky. If it was a ship, those onboard were likely observing Shelby and those with her.

Perhaps the alien ship didn't figure in the presence of the landed Aschen transport just outside of Windcrest, with Admiral Nagala on the expedition, the Ship was now commanded by her executive officer, an older, grizzled male who was watching the DRADIS Readout, alarms blaring throughout the ship.

"Eltee, Send hostile challenge and ID, all hands action stations." The old Colonel, a man by the name of Caldwell ordered, and the bridge crew quickly reacted.

"Ground teams are preparing for anti-ship defense. They've got MANPADS and stationary Anti-Ship missiles."

The Colonel nodded, while personnel moved towards fortified position in the hills. A Handful of Avenger SAM systems, along with Vindicator Anti-Ship missiles were prepped and bore aim at the unknown black ship, which was brought up with a hail.

"Attention unidentified vessel, this is the Aschen Ship 'Hermes Thunder' You are in restricted airspace, identify yourselves and state your intentions or we will fire upon you."

The ship captain called back almost immediately, "This is Captain Karl Fields of the Amelie's Hope, running pickup for survivors of our main ship being destroyed. We are coming for those in that crashed drop ship. Our ship came under attack and the civilians were evacuated to the nearest planet. We need to reach them as soon as possible."

The captain halted the ship's descent and waited for clearance.

As Shelly and the men from Windcrest were not privy to the long range communication being exchanged between the Aschen vessel and the unknown vessel in the sky, they continued about their business of investigating the downed vessel for any sign of survivors among the wreckage.

"Talking to someone?" Shelby asked as she stepped into the rooms from the shadows of the stairwell. As she came into view she lowered the silver lined cowl of her cloak.

For being encased in the armor plating of the Le'thorian knights, she moved with remarkable ease and quiet.

For the most part since his arrival, the patroni had left Josh to his devices, and this was likely the first time one of them had actively sought him out.

A wry grin on the specter's face, as he turned to view Shelby. "Musing aloud, merely. Can I help you?"

It was sufficiently noteworthy to be stumbled upon here of all the temple. Few came to this old portion of the temple as it was, and this was the first time in his, ironically, haunting that he had been addressed.

"Perhaps," Shelby replied. "You bear the mark, and the majority believe your claim that you where sent to us, but we know not why anymore than you do," she explained.

"There are some that would have you turned away from our steps, for the crimes of your... former life. But Le'thorian teaches forgiveness, and rebirth. You would not be the first agent of darkness, to forsake such things. The decision has been reached to tentatively accept you among our own, but there are those who are not yet convinced as to your intentions, or the truth of your story."

She gestured towards the steps, an invitation for him to join her in departing the temple.

"We will extend to you our resources, and send you out into the world to show through action what you have spoken to us in word. And in time, your true nature will be revealed to us."

Drifting in her wake, he couldn't fault her the blunt statement of what he was. He himself was the reason for his current existence, and that of Kushin. Following the knight, Josh merely nodded.

"I appreciate the doubtless long negotiations on your part for me. Where would you have me go?"

Trepidation waxed through him, though he'd known it would come to this. Penance could not be achieved in exile, but through action. However, it was a world, while no doubt filled with cruelty, that contained innocent lives. And though his demons had chosen to lie low here in a temple filled with potentially lethal powers, Josh held no illusion he had mastery of Kushin's tendencies. And the price of failure...

Josh was resolved not to fail. But would Kushin be content to simply roll over? Not likely.

"Issunar," she answered as they ascended the steps. "A land where the dead walk among the living, and where the supernatural live alongside humans. A threat to this tentative peace approaches on the horizon, but our seers have not been able to ascertain the nature of the threat. It remains shrouded from our view."

It likely didn't take much to ascertain why Josh had been chosen to investigate the matter. Given his own undead nature, he would blend well enough among the locals.

"You will be accompanied by two of our order, and tasked with uncovering the nature of this threat. You're to maintain contact and report back to us for further instruction should your investigation prove fruitful. And be warned... failure in derailing the coming events will herald the bloodiest genocide Terran history has known in centuries."

That last drew a sharp stare from Joshua, searching eyes that seemed far too solid for a ghost. His lip curled slightly in a scowl.

"So, don't fail. That command never changes, no matter who gives it." Slightly acid, his response was almost automatic. There was bitterness aplenty in his human personality, a reminder that passed his own mind that Kushin was a by-product, not a cause. Shrugging, he continued following in silence for a time.

Finally, speaking once again. "Who's the lucky one who gets to watch the dead guy?"

Shelby rapped loudly against the oaken door of the Windcrest jailhouse. It wasn't a particularly large building, and mostly served as a place to toss local drunkards to sleep it off, but it was perhaps the last place Oriel expected to be taken this morning.

Oriel had already been filled in on his assignment, and of his and Arrow's side-trip in taking a young boy to locate his father in Lutetia, but no one had made mention that the nine-year old child would be locked up in a jailhouse of all places.

After a minute the door opened, and a gruff looking man stepped aside to let them in.

"Been expecting you guys. He's down the hall there," he said as he pointed them in the right direction.

The boy in question was sitting on the floor of one of the jail cells with his arms folded over his chest sulking. The other cells all sat empty except for one with an overweight mountain of a man snoring loudly, and in comparison the dirty boy dressed in worn out rags and leathers looked remarkably out of place.

"Wait," Oriel said as Shelby rapped on the door. "He's in jail?" he asked, blinking in surprise. The blonde-haired gunslinger had been expecting to be on his way to the orphanage, not the jailhouse. "What trouble has he gotten into that's landed him in here at his age?"

After the gruff looking man let them in, he cast a glance down the corridor at his soon-to-be charge. He looked much as Oriel had expected - albeit perhaps a little more dirty and ragged. The orphans in Windcrest were by no means kept in luxury, but most of them at least had one set of intact clothing.

"I... think maybe a trip to a clothes store and a shower are in order before we set off." he remarked to Shelby with an amused raised eyebrow, before adding in a quieter voice "What do you know about him?"

"He was picked up by the militia, stealing again. The orphanage matron says he's been terrorizing the other children, and there was nowhere else to put him up for the night," the man at their backs explained.

"Can you let him out?" Shelby asked?

"Yeah sure. He's hasn't tried to hurt anyone, just needed somewhere to cool his heals for the night," the man replied as he moved past them to unlock the cell door.

"Eirik, do you remember me?" she asked.

The boy was still sulking but he looked at her a moment. "Yeah."

"This is Oriel. He and his friend are going to be taking you on a trip."

"Where?" he asked.

"To Lutetia."

"Where's that?"

Shelby shook her head. "That doesn't matter right now. I need you to take Oriel back to the orphanage to get your things, alright?"

"I don't want to go."

Oriel smiled to Eirik, crouching down to his height. "Hey there!" he exclaimed cheerfully, "It's nice to meet you, Eirik. We're going to be going to find your dad! It's gonna be fun, like an adventure!"

Inwardly, he was grimacing. Terrorizing the other children? 'I don't want to go'? He had a feeling this wasn't going to be as simple a task as he'd expected.

"Gotta be better than this smelly old jail cell, right?" he added, before glancing at the jailor, "Er, no offense."
