Inqueta To'avuor

"I don't understand you, creature, but you amuse me."

0 · 381 views · located in The Nightwing

a character in “The Nightwing's Voyage”, as played by SuperNinjaRoo

Description

Inqueta's race, known as the Schael, do not vary much in looks. Most have have lean builds and a petite frame. Their legs are long, and their feet match those of a humans in looks. If someone were to look closely, they would see that the Schaelans usually only walk on the balls of their feet, rarely letting their heels touch the ground. This helps them to be light on their feet, and most of all, silent. Their bodies do not have the hard bones that humans do. They are structured by a flexible skeleton similar to cartilage. This allows them to move their bodies in almost any way they want. Their skin is what sets them apart from one another. It varies anywhere from light blue, to translucent white. Inque's skin is on the darker side, being pale blue rather than translucent. Her eyes are pupiless, glossy orbs, that can change into any color on a black and white scale. The Schael's eyes change shade, depending on how they feel. Her eyes are big and almond shaped, just like most everyone in her race. She has a flat nose with small slits that open and close at will. Her lips, which match the color of her skin, are full, and hardly ever smiling. She doesn't have eyebrows. Along her temples there are a series of three slits that open and close at will. They are sensory organs. Directly behind those are her pointed ears, that once again, open and close. They detect vibrations and are extremely sensitive if all openings are open. She has silvery-white hair that reaches mid back. It is feathery and soft. She has a long tail with with matching hair on the end. It is long enough to reach the ground, so she usually has it at a slight curl at the end. She is around 5'9, short for her race, but she likes her height.

Her race usually goes with out clothing, due to their beliefs, but Inque suffers through wearing tank tops and shorts. All of her few items of clothing are varying shades of white, grey and black. She never wears shoes. Ever.

Personality

Inqueta was always different than her siblings. She always tried to control the color of her eyes hiding emotions that everyone shows off so flamboyantly. She doesn't really have a reason behind this habit, she just prefers if other people can't read her emotions. She is a straight to the point kind of gal. Don't get her wrong though, she has a good sense of humor, most others just don't get it, even though she get's everyone else's. Even if she finds something absolutely hilarious, only a small smile will be shown. Getting her to laugh is a very hard thing to do. Because her eyes are one solid color, it's hard to tell where she is looking. The Schael don't have a very advanced verbal language. It is mostly sounds, click and voice inflections rather than words. The reason they never developed a language is because they have strong empathetic abilities, feeling thoughts, rather than hearing them verbally. They can feel someone looking at them, that sort of thing. For this reason, Inque is able to communicate when she is looking at someone. Inque is very sensitive to others, understanding their feelings even when not spoken. She cannot read minds, and she does not intentionally pry on others feelings though. She has a good sense of privacy.

Equipment

She owns a medium sized gun, that is usually strapped to the outside of her thigh. It has many different capabilities, including checking atmospheric pressure, gas levels, gravitational pull and those sorts of things. It's main function is to shoot small orbs of a electricity. It can be loaded with regular ammo, though. These weapons are specially designed to each owner and come from Schaelan hands. They will follow suit and blend in with everything else, just as their owner does. Inqueta isn't skilled in hand to hand combat, due to her people's style of life. They are stealthy and silent, rarely, if ever, getting caught by their prey. They aren't necessarily a peaceful people, but they won't attack with their body. They usually don't associate with other races, although some venture away and become assassins. They are the best at what they do. Because of their reclusive nature, they are ignorant when it comes to social situation with other races. They know as much as they can learn of the other creatures, but rarely come in contact with anyone off of their planet. No outside has ever been to their home planet. Schaelans have the ability to change their skin to match their surroundings, like a chameleon. They can disappear completely, which is the reason they focus so much on stealth and silence. It makes them the perfect assassin. Some believe that they have the power to become invisible, rather than blending in. It is unclear which is true because the people are secretive about this specifically.

History

Inque was raised with every other child born on the same day as she, as is customary on their planet. The Schaelans have, as they like to put it, "grown out of" mating for love. Rather, they mate for the sole purpose of reproduction. Some don't mate at all. Their system is similar to a bee hive's method of reproduction, but they have multiple "queens" per city or village. Schaelan women have the ability to birth up to ten offspring a year. They haven't ruled out love, no, but it is uncommon this day and age on their planet. It is not looked down upon, nor looked up to. Rather, it is just the choice of each Schaelan whether or not to pursue it. Most, however, find it to be a waste. And also, a burden to look after children. Inque lived in one of the biggest cities. She was taught the Schaelan way of stealth and silence, like all Schaelan children are. She learned extremely quick and breezed through her classes, eventually moving onto optional, much more advanced classes. She was skilled and graduated from all schooling earlier than her siblings. All Schaelan people start school at the age of 5 and stay in school until they are 24. inqueta, as previously mentioned was ahead, and finished regular schooling at 19, going on 20. She finshed her extra classes at 22. She is currently 23. Her ability to evade enemies and efficiently maneuver her way through most terrains makes her the perfect scout, or assassin if need be.

Other: She learned English in school, and even though she has a strong accent, she speaks with self confidence.
She was also taught to be wary of Metamorphites, if they ever encountered one, because if they touch her, they may be able to use their ability. Their chameleon ability is sacred to them, and that is one of the reasons why they don't tell if they become translucent, or blend in.

So begins...

Inqueta was watching everyone as they came in for their interviews. She watched the failures, and felt Captain Oris's annoyance and disappointment. She understood that this had to have been extremely frustrating. She opened up her ears to listen to the conversations between Oris and Colin. It wasn't that she didn't like Colin, but she was already wary of him. He was a metamorphite, and undoubtedly, he would try to touch her, to be able to mimic her capabilities. She also listened to the conversations Oris had with everyone that was interviewed. A man named Eddie was to be their pilot. Captain Oris seemed to liked him well enough, and his files looked good. Inque nodded, satisfied with who was going to be flying the ship. Next came the cook. She was a beautiful girl with a look of determination on her face. Her red hair matched her gorgeous rosey skin. The food Minn had prepared looked delicious, and Inque's mouth watered enviously as she watched Oris eat them. The girl was a Shar, and seemed pretty harmless. The blue girl's suspicions of Colin proved to be right when he shook the cute girl's hand. His skin turned the same shade of red as hers was when he turned into a Shar. Inqueta watched him walk back over to the Captain.

A Tourain stood by the captain, and no sooner than Inque saw him, Colin had changed into his own form of one. She didn't have to open her ears more to listen to him speak. In fact, she closed a few of the micro-slits, because his voice was booming. Captain Oris seemed impressed with him, so Inqueta didn't feel the need to pay attention anymore. She directed her focus to a red-headed girl and a man who had just introduced himself as Dr. Weiss. She assumed he was there for the position of doctor, but she wasn't sure if the girl was there to apply or not. She assumed, once again, that she was, just because the bar was pretty much empty of anyone else. She made a small clicking noise with her tongue and slid from the booth she had been hiding in. She silently made her way up to the Captain's table, knowing no one could hear her. If they weren't too engaged with the Tourain, named Val Salah As Tallan, they might have seen her, considering she made her skin blue as she walked over there. She intended to stay a few steps away, close enough to make her presence known, but far enough to give them space and not be rude, interrupting Val's interview. She practiced what she would say in her head.

Colin's eyes shifted to the blue creature who approached from the bar. A large, blue, thin, humanoid creature apporaced silently, without making contact with anyone. Colin had not encountered a creature like this before. How exciting. He assumed she was there to apply for some position, and while Reg was otherwise occupied, he would take care of this one. He stood and headed or the creature. He had changed from the Tourain form back into his human form.

Her eyes were... interesting. They were flat gray. Pupiless, fascinating. 'I wonder if shes colorblind?' He dropped the thought.

He arrived and held out a hand. "Good evening, I am Colin Seartjik, Second in command of the Nightwing. Are you here to apply?

"I have no concern with acting under your command Captain. I have served within the Human Naval Forces as well as a large number of private employers, both male and female. I would be content to serve under anyone with competence of leadership. Do you require credentials?"

"That is alright Val," Reggie said leaning back in her seat. She smiled. "I know that Tourians can do whatever job they apply for. Have a seat. Or if you would like, we rented out rooms. Do whatever you like, just be back here tomorrow morning."

Val nodded and walked off away from the table. Reggie checked his name off the list. They still had several people to see and several of them had shown up. She could see them all, crowded around tables and the bar. So many alien races in a human Inn. They had to be there for her crew. She smiled noticing Minn laughing at something Eddie said.

She liked Minn. The Shariva was bright and bubbly, which is what Reggie needed to balance out the seriousness of the rest of her crew. Especially that Tourian. Reggie looked over at Colin ready to say something, when she noticed him talking to someone.

A Schael. How fascinating. Reggie could tell by the light blue skin and pupil-less eyes. Her sensory glands were a big give away as well. Regina leaned on her elbow and watched the two. She signaled for another glass of alcohol and continued to watch. It was nice to take a small break and watch her Second handle all the questioning.

Inqueta looked at Colin as he turned his attention to her. As he made his way over, he seemed to be inspecting her. This may be the first time he has seen a Schaelan in person. She thought to herself. She blinked a few times, adjusting her focus to Colin's eyes. He shifted into his human form, and this again sent off triggers in her brain of his abilities. He put his hand out for a shake and she ignored it as he said "Good evening, I am Colin Seartjik, Second in command of the Nightwing. Are you here to apply?"

"It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Inqueta To'avuor." Wondering how she could avoid touching him without seeming rude, she decided to show him the way the Schalaens greeted one another. She touched her first two fingers to her forehead, then grabbed her other forearm. She made a slight bowing movement and slid her hand down to her wrist. She raised her body and let her hands fall to her sides. "Yes, I am here because I would like to be a scout. I can assure you that I would be a great addition to this ship, Din Seartjik." She preferred not using his first name, so she just added the male title used on her planet in front of his last. In her culture it is a very intimate thing to call someone by their first name, and only done so by friends. Din for males, Da for females, and Chu for children, or anyone clearly younger than the person addressing them.

Colin raised an eyebrow at the greeting he was given instead of the handshake. Its just as well. This was as good as anything, He was a bit bummed he wouldnt be able to copy her though. Whatever. He commited the greeting to memory in case he felt the need to use it in the future. He withdrew his hand, embarrased.

Inequeta To'avuor. A new scout. He beamed. Scouting was his specialty and he loved it when he had others with the same talent with him. Becoming nearyl any species was extremely usefull when trying to gain information. He could shrink to the size of a pea for insertion purposes, or change into a hulking monster to intimidate. couting also gave hm a chance to copy other life forms.

'Din?' this couldnt have abeen a mispronunciation. Must be a prefix used in her culture. She didnt use his first name, so he assumed he'd better do the same when adressig her.

He looked her over. Her slender body, it looked like she wuld be very quick on her feet. She was on the balls of her feet. 'Ready to spring at a moments notice.' He finished his inspection and thought back to Reg's sheet. Only two more candidates for the scout position, but she looked extremely fit for the job.

He looked back into Inqueta's flat eyes. The next question Reg would ask came to mind. 'Does my being a human woman affect your ability to be part of my crew?' or someting along those lines. He had introduced himself as second in command, so she must have deduced that Reg was captain. She wasnt leaving, so she must be fine. He hghly doubted they would get another as qualified as this. She was in.

"Well, Miss To'avuor," he hoped he pronounced it correctly. "Welcome" He attempted the greeting he was given earlier. He probably screwed it up a bit. He wasnt nearly as good at copying actions as he was faces. "We have rented out rooms for all of you, so if youd like to stay, be my guest." He grinned. "We ship off tomorrow morning. I look forward to working with you" He gave a small bow and turned on his heels, heading back to Reg to let her know about their new scout.

Inqueta saw that he felt embarrassed and felt badly about this. Nevertheless, she pushed the though aside. "Well, Miss To'avuor," Her name, though pronounced correctly, sounded weird coming off of his tongue, in English without her own accent. "Welcome." He copied what she had done to greet him and she was pleased. "We have rented out rooms for all of you, so if you'd like to stay, be my guest." He smiled and it was infectious. She liked his smile, and it made her lips twitch upward slightly. It was something most likely unnoticeable to others. He made another bow after saying "We ship off tomorrow morning. I look forward to working with you." Then he turned and walked away.

"And I, you." She said and strode away, towards the bar. She ordered a nonalcoholic drink and downed it quickly. She asked for a refill before taking a seat near Minerva and Eddie. "Eddie. Minn, I am Inqueta. I am on of the Nightwing's scouts." She gave the same greeting to them as she gave Colin." She filtered her ears to only sounds made near her, and so she could hear Colin and Reggie.

"Eddie. Minn, I am Inqueta. I am on of the Nightwing's scouts." a schael introduced herself with a noticeable accent as she sat near Eddie and Minn.

"Well, I'm Eddie Ackers, as you apparently already know," he smiled awkwardly at her display, not used to her race's signature greeting. "I guess I will be your pilot, if you don't already know that....." he gave a slight cough, not sure what he could really say at the moment, as she apparently already knew about him, or at least his name.

He was glad he had a chance to meet her species beforehand, as he remembered staring at the slits....the slits....the many slits on one before. He'd rather not have that embarassing moment where they call him out on it happen again, either. Pushing that memory aside, he regained his mental composure.

"I guess you'll have to admire my piloting skills when we finish recruiting," he said for no other reason than to speak. He didn't like doing so, but he hated silence more than anything.

A schael, how exciting! She performed her species' greeting and introduced herself as one of the scouts. Minn smiled at her accent, watching her intently from pure excitement. So many new faces were here. Being sheltered as Minn was (she purposely avoided the memories of her cage-like "bedroom" if you could call it that) seeing so many new kinds of aliens was exhilarating.

Eddie attempted to speak, but obviously only for the sake of making sounds. Minn had a difficult time with words as well, wondering how to address the schael when she already seemed to know them. She shrugged though, pasting on her smile again and happily asking, "What kind of dishes do you like eating? I know all sorts but specifics are needed with such a...diverse crew." She giggled a little, glancing around. "Just know that our pilot here gets the first dish made."

"...Eddie; try not to throw us around to much and please do your best to keep my roof firmly attached to the rest of the ship.”

"I can't guaruntee anything if you guys put me in a bad mood," the new pilot teased with a laugh. It's not like he'd actually do something like that, but hey, they didn't know him yet. With another glance around the people at the table, he was definetly reminded that humans were not going to be the only thing on this trip. What with the squid eyes, the random slits on the girl's head and just about everything else there to prove it, human's were to be the minority on this trip comparing them to aliens.

However, this only slightly bugged Eddie. It wasn't that he was racist, but he just felt better if he was with more humans. So far, there were two besides him, both female. While he had no problem with this, he did long for a guy to hang out with. Odds are, none of the male members of the ship met the personality requirement that Eddie had for a fun person to talk to. Well, it couldn't be helped.

"...And don't doubt Minn." he added for no reason in general. "All I had to do was smell what she was cooking and I could tell it was delicious. On that note, let me remind you guys I called dibs on the first things she makes,"

Inqueta hadn't bothered with getting to know her crew mates the night before. She understood that she would have the entire next day for that. She stuck around long enough to catch most of their names, but then went to bed, quite early. She curled up in a little ball, and rose early. She was walking out of her room when she saw the Tourain from the night before sneaking out of his room. He had all of his stuff with him, and it didn't look like he was coming back. Inque glared at him, but silently continued walking. She sat at the end of the bar, and blended in, watching as everyone came downstairs. The captain seemed to have a healthy enough appetite. Her second in command, who seemed just the slightest bit hungover to Inque, took her hashbrowns, which just made her order more. She got up and went upstairs after a loud noise.

The blue skinned girl turned her attention to the Shariva and the pilot. Two of the people she had met the night before. There was someone sitting near them too. A human. She hadn't seen him last night. She shrugged the thought off and stepped off her chair and walked over to the two, or rather, three, of them. "Goodmorning." She said to them, giving the same greeting she had given the previous night. Just as she was sitting down, the new guy got up and walked away. He went over the the captain and they exchanged a few words. Reggie looked upset, but Inqueta didn't bother to listen to them. The girl looked over the menu. She simply ordered juice, unlike a few who were already drinking alcohol so early in the morning.

Inqueta had been listening to the conversation between the pilot, cook and new mechanic. She sensed Saein nervousness with touching other people, and she even voiced it. Eddie became very displeased with her, and Inque was getting two very different feeds of emotions. She finally spoke up. "Firni," she addressed her by her race, rather than her name. She didn't know her last name, and she couldn't bring herself to call her by her first. "Pilot Ackers is right. You need to take into consideration the ship you have joined." Her voice was emotionless, and her eyes were glued on the woman's face. She blinked a few times, then turned to look at Eddie. Some of her silvery hair fell in her face, and she pushed it back with the back of her hand. "Pilot Ackers, she isn't racist. Like she said, the Firni, as a race, have a hard time touching other races. It gives them weird sensations." She glanced at Saein again. "Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I have not studied your kind in many years." She blinked a few times again, and flared the sensory glands on her temples. They shut one by one except for the top. She was trying to read the emotions near her. "I'm not trying to cause more problems, but rather solve some that would otherwise be unnecessary." Her eye brows went up slightly, and the corners of her eyes twitched upward slightly. In an instant, her face was back to it's exotic, stoic expression. What she did may have been the beginning of a smile, but she doubted anyone noticed.

"Miss Darv," she turned her attention to Minn, "I should safely be able to assume you don't know any Schael recipes. If I am wrong, I apologize. I have a few written down and if it's alright, I'd like to share them. I cannot cook, but I know you can." She tugged at her shorts, and shifted uncomfortably. She scanned the room, but kept her head still. It was impossible to know her focus wasn't on the group anymore. She couldn't see the Captain.

Minn

Racist? Minn sat straighter with her nerves picking up again. She might have groaned in annoyance if she was outside the group. She just wanted a good, easy time with everyone. Why couldn't everyone get along?

Inqueta approached, addressing the mechanic and agreeing with Eddie. She then brought up food and Minn smiled. "Recipes would help immensely," she said, wondering what sort of food Schael ate. She had made plenty of specialty dishes before, most of them she had never even heard of and it had been her first time preparing them, yet the customers were satisfied, asking for more. Confident she could pull off anything Inqueta had to show, she smiled brighter.

Eddie only raised an eyebrow as the Schael decided to join in. She was even supporting him, for the most part. As she finished and mentioned that Firini as a race disliked touching other races due to whatever reason, he could only think of how redundant that information was: He already knew this, and didn't mind it one bit. He grinned rather widely before letting out a hearty laugh and then explaining himself.

"I know she isn't racist, and only a fool would assume that just because touching others wasn't a preferred action," he informed. "However, I find myself in a rather bored mood, and I couldn't help but mess with her," he laughed again, looking at inqueta. "I guess I should be an actor, if I hid my true feelings that well,"

He then shifted back to Saein, with a bigger smile on his face. "Don't worry, I don't believe you to be racist in the slightest. I've been around most kinds of aliens, and have actually bothered to inform myself on them, so I understand" he sighed. "But yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of touching either, beyond a handshake,"

Once more, he turned his body, this time just outwards towards wherever and addressed the group before him. "Yeah... don't take me seriously too much, if you want to remain sane at least,"

Inqueta listened to what Eddie had said. He was laughing, and saying something about being bored. She felt bored as well. He had done a very good job at hiding his feelings, although, she wasn't sure if he was just trying to cover up his annoyance. She decided that it didn't really matter in the long run, and pushed the conversation away. Arc made her way over, and picked up on the joking. Inqueta wasn't very amused. She understood they were joking, but it still made her uneasy that they were saying they shouldn't listen to a thing Eddie says. When Arc addressed her, Inque put her focus on the human girl. "Equally." She said and inclined her head slightly. She opened the slits in her nose and took a deep breath in, closing them once more. "It's quite crowded in here. I think I'm going to stretch my legs before we get settled onto the ship. She turned away from the group and slowly, yet deliberately walked towards the door. She still didn't see the captain, and now that she though about it, the second in command wasn't to be seen either. They must have been getting the rest of the crew up, or prepping the ship.

Saein grew more and more confused, and it showed. Her spots now resembled a swarm of angry bees. A moment after Eddie mentioned it being a joke, she finally figured out what was going on. "Eddie," she said, "normally I love jokes, but that one was hurtful." More for the benefit of others than for Eddie, who already seemed to know, she explained: "These little spots all over my skin don't just show my emotions, we Firni can sense them on each other when we touch. The moment between sensing that someone doesn't seem to have emotions and sensing they are warm and alive after all is really weird. It doesn't help that I really like to touch my friends." To help everyone relax, she made a face and added "That last bit sounded dirty, didn't it?"

Putting on her serious face again, she turned to Inqueta. "I know I could avoid that feeling by avoiding mixed crews, but it would be kind of racist if I did, don't you agree? I've been told the feeling can go away with practice, and if it doesn't, well, I'm a mechanic, not a masseuse. And please don't say 'Firni' if you want to get my attention, I don't think I'll recognize that as referring to me. You can call me Saein, or mechanic Vernig. And you are...?" She held out her hand for a handshake. She had no intention of stopping shaking hands with those she introduced herself to.

That is, if those people did appear to want handshakes. She smiled right back at Arc. "It's great to meet you too. Like I've been telling everyone all day, my name is Saein." She was back in her relaxed and happy mood,

A part of her had been paying attention to Minn all that time. She placed her hand on the girl's shoulder. Luckily at least that body part was covered, so she could touch without hesitation. "Listen, hon, you'll probably see many worse confrontations on a ship. There are two people who can always end them. One is the captain, who can tell everyone to stop it. The other is the cook, who can distract everyone with food. Okay?" A gentle squeeze, an encouraging smile, and she let go. The cook was her favorite crew member so far. Saein would suck up to any cook, but she genuinely liked Minn.

Inqueta was startled by Reggie storming down the stairs. She listened to what she said to the barkeep. Apparently, things were not going her way. the alien girl stepped aside to let her captain out the door. She was fuming, and Inque didn't want to get in her way. As Colin made his way towards Reggie, Inque returned to her previous group. she had left with intentions of finding the captain, and getting fresh air, but neither of those seemed desirable anymore.

"You want to talk girls, let's talk girls," The dark headed man said, taking a sip of his drink. "So you swing to that team or what? I'm a little confused, so if you could explain." He raised his eyebrows at Saein. "I'd love to hear some details." Inqueta pondered on this statement for a moment. She wondered if the women was indeed a lesbian, or if she was just messing with the handsome man.

Inque realized that she hadn't introduced herself to the mechanic. "Mechanic Vernig, sorry to interrupt, I am Inqueta To'avuor. Sorry if I came across as rude to you before. It was not my intention." She stuck out her hand to Saein, who in turn took it with both of hers and shook it. She then turned her head to look at Bond. "I don't believe we have met. Like I just said, I'm Inqueta To'avuor. I am a scout for this crew." She put out her hand for him to shake, if he so chose. She blinked a few times, and her white eyes began dulling to a light grey. She was becoming bored, and was itching to get the trip started.

"I don't think of it as a team sport" Saein chuckled. "If I like someone enough, it doesn't matter what they are. As long as I don't work directly with them or am in the same chain of command, of course. As for details, there are reasons I can't say much about them right now." She counted them on her fingers. "One, I decided to stop playing around a few years ago, and haven't found someone to be serious with yet. Two, I'm having an issue with skin contact, I'll explain it another time. Three, someone seems to want to join our conversation."

She shook Inque's hand. "That's quite alright, scout To'avuor. You're not the only one who is... distracted. I think finding a mechanic wasn't the only thing our captain needs to fix at the last minute. She looks stressed. Ah well, that's exactly why I never wanted a higher rank. Never a chance to relax." She turned her head away a bit from Inque and winked at Bond with the eye Inque now couldn't see. The moving patterns on her skin could give away that she was being cheeky, but she assumed Inque couldn't read them, and couldn't read her mind any other way either.

Switching to a safe subject everyone would feel comfortable about, she asked "So, how did both of you end up in this crew?"

Inqueta's eyes deepened to a darker grey, but presently returned to the slightly off-white grey color. The man in the conversation had ignored her, and she didn't know why.

"So, how did both of you end up in this crew?" Saein asked the two of them. The good looking man spoke up first.

"My looks," he said, then laughed. "Nah, I happened by, Regina and I went to school together, engineer was needed. End of that boring tale."

Inqueta listened to him. So he had no real reason to be on this ship. He just happened by. He was the engineer, that was nice to know. She turned her gaze back to Saein. "If you hadn't already noticed, I'm a Schael. If you know anything of my kind, you would know that we rarely venture out of our own village, and even more uncommonly, off of our home planet. I'll save you the details of my life story, but I am different than the other Schaelans. I left, and visited a few exotic places. Earth has always spiked my interest though. I found out about Captain Oris' ship, and thought it a good idea to join. I'm a scout." Inqueta finished and pushed her hair back again.

"Earth? We're looking for EARTH?" Saein laughed out loud. "That's crazy. I mean, you don't lose a planet like a datapad dropped into a toilet. There may be some dangerous things involved. At least all of the crewmembers I met seem like people who know what they're doing and how to get themselves out of trouble." Only a species that could literally grin from ear to ear could smile a bigger smile than Saein's. "Just like the good old days. Good crew, looking for something improbable, some danger... Today must be my lucky day. This, after I quit my job this morning, checked in in a random hotel, noticed the scent of a great cook, and she turns out to work for someone who offers me a job out of the blue!"

Saein appeared to suddenly remember something very bad. "Oh dear. Catch-22. I think I've just given myself a headache. Please excuse me."

She found herself a booth, a reasonably quiet place to try and figure out the problem she had just noticed. One of her crewmates didn't seem like she knew what kind of mission she had gotten herself into. Her ethics required her to warn crewmates about danger, but if she did give that warning, the girl might quit, and that very same girl happened to be the only truly convincing reason to want the job at all. If Saein's actions cost the captain her cook and her mechanic, the captain as well as the others wouldn't be pleased and that couldn't be good for her chances to find some other job. She didn't mind risking her career for a crewmate, but if the cook got scared away she wouldn't be a crewmate, just some stranger. Saein could decide not to say anything, but that would make her feel responsible for watching Minn's back. But if they were going to spend a lot of time on the same ship, she wanted to be friends with her, and imagined responsibility would prevent that.

It was all much too complicated. "Okay, Saein, think outside of the box" she said to herself. "Try thinking with your heart instead of your head."

What did her intuition tell her Minn would do if warned that the mission could be more dangerous than she might think? The girl seemed nervous, not just new-job-nervous, or big-adventure-nervous like Saein had been twelve years ago, but must-not-fail-nervous. As if she was coming from a situation much worse than whatever she thought the job might bring.

If that intuitive guess was right, that meant there was no problem, but it made Saein feel sad. At least it was something she could ask Minn about without getting in trouble, and if she turned out to be wrong, maybe she could think of another way out later. Now where was that girl? Saein got up to look around. No Minn...? Oh, there she was, in the booth right behind her.

"Minn, can I ask you a quick question? Is this job much better than your previous one?"
