Nineteen (19)

G E N D E R
Female

A P P E A R A N C E
Usually seen in average, dark clothing, due to her need to just blend in with the crowd and never stand out. She is five foot five (5' 5") and has dark brown hair that goes down onto her chest. She has dark brown eyes and a fair complexion, she'll usually be seen with her head down and hands in her pockets, keeping to herself.

E X T R A
Abbey was born mute due to a rare speech disorder, she uses basic sign language to communicate with the people she knows and uses simplistic hand gestures to those she doesn't.

Upon waking in the room Abbey quickly found herself a corner and sat, eyeing each individual silently, trying to remember what she can't.

So begins...

Abbie was the second to awaken from her seemingly peaceful slumber. She slowly blinked as she pushed herself up into a sitting position and wiped the sleep from her eyes. Finishing with her face she stopped for a second to look around, she didn't recognise anything, or anyone. Come to think of it she didn't remember anything. She slowly pushed herself backwards and sat with her back into a corner, she was cautious of the others. One of them was awake, a guy, who was tapping his foot and holding a... pocket watch?

She stared at him for a while, wondering if he was the person who had brought her here, but he looked just like he had no idea what was happening either. She took her eyes off of him and looked at all the people still sleeping on the floor. There really was quite a few people apparently in the same predicament as herself.

Abbie checked her pockets over for anything she might find that would help her remember, coming up empty, she sighed. Her head was empty along with her pockets, all she knew was the four white walls enclosed around her. She stopped fidgeting and sat still, eyeing the man who was already awake.

As Devren kept tapping his foot, he had this sudden feeling of being watched. He flicked his eyes upward and his face softened from it's irritated state. He noticed a girl across the room, starting to stir out from her sleep. He stood and stretched for a while, coming to the conclusion that there was more people in this room with him, still resting. As he rubbed the back of his neck, cramped from being laid on for too long, he felt somewhat of an incision that somebody made. It didn't feel like a scab though. More like plastic, he felt come into his mind. He realized that he still had a fond memory of substances. Devren looked to the side, rubbing before putting his hand down and looking to the now awake player.

Devren sighed, "So you're in this too?" He still stared around the room, seeing that no one else was awake. "I don't know what else to say... um, I think my name was Danny? No, no, no, no. Not that.", he asked himself. Trying to remember something that wasn't even there is one of the most difficult things that the human mind can bear. It's like walking through a fog that seems to go on forever.

Devren, tapping his chin, muttered, "Devren? Is that it?" It was the only this name to come to his mind as he raced through it. He could only think of that one name so it must be true to him. Shrugging his shoulders, he waved once to the sitting girl saying, "My name is Devren... I think. Can you remember yours?"

Abbie looked up from the floor when the guy across from her started speaking. "-My name is Devren... I think. Can you remember yours?" She looked at him with a sad look, although her memories were nowhere to be found she still knew one fact about herself, she couldn't speak. The thought was natural, and she believed it. She didn't even try to speak back, instead Abbie shook her head and made a mouth shape with her right hand and drew a finger across her own neck while she shook her head from side to side, trying to tell him she couldn't speak, in the most simplistic way possible.

He made a valid point though, what was her name? She tried to think of something, anything. Her head gave nothing, no hunches or guesses. She shook her head again after thinking. For a second she thought if the name Devren rang any bells but once again, nothing came up. Did she have any reason to be scared? She thought long and hard. She didn't feel scared, just confused and curious. She looked back to the man and lifted her hands to try to tell him she couldn't remember. She pointed to her temple and shrugged, she hoped that was more understandable than the hand puppet thing.

Beau awoke to the sounds of dialogue around her. She slowly opened her eyes...but her mind was empty. She searched for something, anything, that would help her remember, but nothing came to mind. She sat up slowly, looking at the boy and girl before her. "Um...hi..." she said. Shaking her midnight black hair out around her shoulders, she looked back and forth between them.

"I think...I think my name is...Beatr...no, Beau. My name is Beau." She said firmly. "Do either of you remember anything?" She asks, not realizing that the girl in front of her can't speak. She looks around the room and notices the padded walls. They look like giant marshmallow pillows that she could just squish her way through, but something told her there was no way out of here.

She noticed she was wearing a loose striped sweater and a tank top with some people on it, but she had no idea who they were or why she would choose to wear it. Her jeans had holes in the knees and what looked like paint stains on them, but again she had no idea why. Was she an artist? If so, what kind of art did she create? Checking her pockets, she found nothing, but she did notice by accident that her nails were considerably long and sharp. Did that mean something? Ugh, this is so confusing...

Devren's eyes squinted a little as he noticed the silent girl moving her arms in the air. For one this confused him, but after a few minutes of thinking he came to the conclusion that she was a mute. He flicked his head to the left and her a voice creep into the conversation. He gave a small wave and chuckled a bit. Devren heard as Beau said her name and asked the very obvious question that everyone was thinking. He shook his head, saying to the new awakened captive, "I don't remember a thing besides my name."

He touched around the padded walls and viewed the blatant looking section of the room that was obviously the way out. Devren reached for a handle, but alas there was none to be found. Damn. He looked around to the two awake and stated, "But your guess is as good as mine: to tell us why we're here. We can't remember anything." His brow furrowed as he reached in his pocket and pulled out his watch. The clock was still broken, but to see even the tiniest movement would have given him hope.

Beau smiled at Devren in response to his wave and frowned. "Neither do I...but there has to be something there..." She looked at Devren and shrugged. Looking around her, she stood up shakily on weak legs. She stumbled a bit, but regained her balance and turned slowly in a circle. "This room is meant to drive people crazy...the walls have no area for mental stimulation and there doesn't seem to be a way to escape. Ergo, perfect for insanity."

She sat back down next to Devren and blew out a breath. Looking to the girl across from her, she waved her hand, still unaware that the girl can't speak. "I still didn't catch your name," she says, "what is it? Do you remember?"

Devren lifted his hand towards the mute girl across the room and said, "Unfortunately, she can't speak. I'm not too sure what her name is. He sighed and looked around the walls and started rubbing his arm, still trying to keep in the sensations of madness out of his head. The thing was is that he tried to reference something that he had seen before, like a movie or something, but his wiped mind couldn't keep himself calm. He attempted to see some sort of device that was viewing their location, yet the white walls told him otherwise. Nothing but the walls.

Trying to keep his mind off the room's intimidating structure, he turned to Beau and asked, "That paint on your pants... it looks like acrylic. Which means it'll rub off with a bit of saliva. Think the mute girl over there can use it to at least tell us her name?"

Beau looked down at her pants and frowned. "I'm all for conventional ideas but...spit? On my pants?" She looked at Devren with a doubtful look on her face and then looked at the girl. She sighed, knowing it would help them in the long run. "Okay but...my spit. Not hers." Beau shrugged and licked her fingers before rubbing them on one of the paint spots. Devren was right, it came off pretty easily. She put the rubbed off paint in a little puddle on the floor and got to work on the next spot.

With a glance up, she noticed Devren had a slightly frantic look on his face. "Hey," she said softly, "don't focus on the insanity. Think about being here, without anything else butting in. Instead of looking at the walls, close your eyes. Picture...fields. With flowers, and trees, and even a puppy with a child, running around and laughing. The flowers smell like your favorite fragrance...lavender. Let's make it lavender. The trees are blowing in the wind...and the child laughs as she throws the ball for her dog..." Beau trails off, realizing she was creating the picture for herself as well. Something about it rang a bell, but nothing came to mind. Nothing at all.

She clears her throat. "Better?"

Devren looked at the puddle and shrugged at the mix of bubbles and rusty red. He thought about the slurry of colors and his mind suddenly filled with thoughts of comfort like the girl giving advice. Even though he didn't think about the plains speckled with flowers and the memories of a child. But he obviously didn't think of fields to change his mind from the bright walls of the cramped room. Those were some girl's thoughts as he inferred in his mind.

He stared off into space, thinking of the smell of alcohol. As if in the very room, someone was spraying an aerosol-like substance. His mind filled with brick walls, but then all of that faded away as he pulled himself out of his trance. Devren looked to her and asked, "You feel like that's part of your memories? I mean its better than what we have now, which is nothing." He tapped his chin and said, "I had something for a few moments, but I'm not sure if it's true or not.

Ian drags himself to his feet, holding his temples and trying to retain what little balance he can. He looked around at the other three who found themselves conscious, blinking the spots from his eyes as he hesitantly breathed in.

"Ngh...what did I miss? Where are...we?"

His voice goes up on the last word as he finally manages to get a good look at the trio that are standing, clearly not expecting to be anything but alone.

Devren scratched the back of his head, looking a little fidgety as a new player joins into the "fun" of the waiting game. He looks up to him nods his head, stating, "None of us know where we are. None of us know who we are, besides our names. I'm pretty sure you don't too." Devren looked at his watched, which calmed him down a bit. Seeing a new face gave him less of an edge knowing that more people are starting to wake up. He looked around at all the other unconscious people and is tempted to wake them up. But, the urge wasn't necessary. They wouldn't be going anywhere.

He looked back to the walls and searched them like clockwork, spying for any impurity in them besides the paint stained to the floor. Not ignoring the new candidate for his life, Devren continued, "You got a name? Or do you think you do." Devren continued to read the walls as he slowly paced, reaching the corner before looking back at the man.

He pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose, nodding at Devren cautiously. He looked down at his clothing, suddenly feeling uncomfortable as he adjusted the cuffs of his shirt and exhaled slowly.

"Ian. My name's Ian. What's yours?"

Beau blinked at the newcomer, cocking her head to the side. This boy with the Midwestern accent seemed different from the three of them. He was dressed...classier. With the glasses making him look like he had a hint of intelligence. "My name is Beau, this is Devren, and we're still in the process of figuring out her name," Beau said, pointing to the mysterious girl, "she's mute."

Beau noticed Devren, again, looking intently at the walls. She knew he was just trying to discern where they were, and she gave him credit for having the patience to do that. Generally, she preferred to just hash it out through trial and error, cause and effect. She looked around at the group and blew out a breath. "I think the first step is to figure out why we're here. Is it something we all have in common? Not that we would know anything common from our pasts since we can't remember anything..." She grumbled.

Devren stopped with the searching on the walls and decided to try and relate himself to Beau. "We do have some flashes of our memory I believe. I have something about the scent of aerosol and color often calms me down. Maybe I used spray paint? Maybe I'm a graffiti artist?", He explained looking at the three people. He scratched his head and his nose crinkled. Then, his face relaxed as his thinking was a success. He pointed to the ground at the small pond of paint. "And, that paint right there, came from Beau's pants.", He resolved, searching through his mind, "So, if we both paint, are we in the same business with each other? Do we paint different art styles? There's just too many options there."

Devren held his chin with his thumb and index finger, starting to pace around the room, thinking about these variables to their history. It felt like they were getting closer to the start of their lives. Well, at least their occupations at least. Devren stopped thinking and asked Ian, "Ian, if you have any thoughts, any thoughts at all, trust them. If you automatically assume that your attire relates to your line of work, go with that. It's all we have."

Abbie sat in her corner, watching the two people converse for a while before even more people woke up and joined the fray. She stayed still, focusing her mind on remembering anything she could. Suddenly a stray thought crossed her mind for just a second, she felt distant from the others, like she never liked people. Perhaps she was bullied? She thought about the fact she couldn't speak and realised that whoever she was she didn't like people. But these people seemed alright, they were just as lost as she was.

Getting hot she took off her jacket to keep cool and laid it on the floor next to her. Looking it over a label stuck out. She noticed a handwritten word in black ink written on the label and so she grabbed it quickly. Abbie. Her name was Abbie? She smiled, for once writing your name on your labels actually did something. She picked up the jacket and walked over to where Devren as he was the one she had had the most conversation with.

She pointed at the label as she held her jacket out, she knew her name and he could say it out loud for everyone else. The fact she knew her name made her happy, she's one step closer to finding out everything else.

Sully had been lying awake in a corner of the padded room for a few seconds before he saw movement stir through his blurred vision. He quickly decided to play possum and act as if he was still unconscious. A thousand thoughts were streaming through his mind. Where was he? How did he get here? Who was he?These were just some of the questions Sully had, yet refrained from speaking out, for he heard another noise nearby. How many others were in the room?

Judging from the one sided conversation the man who called himself "Devren" was having with the other person, it seemed as though Sully was in the same boat as the others. He aimed a peek and saw that there were a number of bodies lying on the ground. He tried to count them when yet another person seemed to be arousing from their unconsciousness. A third person joining the attempt at remembering what had happened to the lot of them, Sully found himself trying to think of something himself. My name... What's my name? He shut his already closed eyes tighter, attempting to fish something from his blank memory. S... It definitely starts with S... On the verge of figuring out what his name was, a fifth person awoke. "Ngh... What did I miss? Where are we?"

In the midst of the group's confusion, Sully decided playing dead wouldn't really help him much at this point, considering it seemed everyone in the room was in the same situation. Slowly, he rose to his feet, blinking as he adjusted to his eyes to the bright lights shining down on him. He quickly examined the room for the first time. There was no door. Or window. There was nothing but walls. Rolling his shoulders, Sully furrowed his brow as he turned his attention back to the group on the other side of the room.

Beau nodded along with Devren, her eyes bright with remembrance. "Yeah! We could both be artists...but you're right, there are so many types of art that there's no way to tell...what about you, Ian? Any art flashes?" Though she didn't think there would be, she asked anyway. Ian seemed more like the educational, intelligent, study-all-the-time type. Not the artsy type. She looked to the mute girl and watched her show something to Devren, and she lifted her head so she could see, too. "Abbie? Your name is Abbie? That's great! Handy dandy that you have the name written on your tag..." she smiled in Abbie's direction, then her head snapped to her left as she heard another voice.

Looking over, she saw another newcomer awaken. The new boy rose and looked around. She sighed and waved her hand in the direction of the walls. "We've already examined our options. There's no way out. What's your name?"

Devren nodded at the tag on the mute girl's jacket. "So that's your name, huh? It sounds nice. You must be happy that you have that name." He stated, smiling at her. He thought about how good they were getting through the memories. Even simple names felt like a milestone to him. At the rate we're going, we might get out of here after all! Devren stared at the newest member of the party. He felt a little uncertain about this guy. His scowl seemed almost menacing to him. Then again, who would be pleased to be in a room where you don't know what's happening or who you were?

Devren relaxed and listened to what Beau had to say. Hearing the quick introduction to the event, Devren flicked his head to the guy and said, "My name is Devren. The who talked to you is Beau. The one with the glasses, Ian. And the quiet one's name is Abbie." He almost felt like greeting him, but that would just seem rude and out of place. So, Devren instead took in a deep breath and let it out. He then looked back to his pocket watch and kept flicking it, hoping for it to work. At least it kept him distracted from the madness.

Abbie smiled and nodded at both of the compliments from Devren and Beau, these people were friendly after all. Walking back over to her corner she sat down, if she had her name surely that might lead her to something else? She looked at the newcomer with curious eyes, she was unsure of who to trust, she knew nothing about any of these people after all. Devren was definitely okay and Beau seemed nice enough.

Abbie still wasn't sure how she actually felt about this whole situation, she wasn't freaking out like she probably should be. For all she knew she might've gotten into this room on purpose for one reason or another. Her past self might've gone into this knowing what would happen. This thought calmed her, for a minute she forgot that she didn't know anyone or anything and found solace in the fact that this could all be part of a big plan, like a surprise birthday party, but extreme.
