"What do we do Rosemary?" Eamon asked his blind mother. "Berry's deaf, you're blind and there's really no way we can fix it?" Rosemary shook her head patiently. "I'm afraid not," she said, sinking into a chair. "To rid the world of miasma, we each had to sacrifice something important to us." Rosemary relied on her sight to heal others, Erika relied on her hearing to play the flute, Seraphina needed her hands to play piano, Maple used her sense of smell to help her get around, Alistair used his legs to fight crime. It wasn't all bad though, these were not life limiting symptoms and with some adjustments, they would be able to live their best lives. Already Mallier was looking for ways to help them, the CCC had invented incredible technology that they could make use of now that Karma was dead. There was still Manfred to deal with of course, but Mallier had a feeling he wouldn't be causing anymore trouble now that he was in custody of the authorities.
Clover blinked her eyes open, the room was empty. Like a dream, the others had come and gone. She felt a tingling on her lips and gently reached up a hand to touch them. How long had she been asleep for this time? The window indicated that it was day time, the untouched lunch tray meaning she had slept through another day. The kitten struggled to sit up, she had to use the toilet, but could barely get out of bed. She sunk to her knees, crawling to the bathroom to try and use the restroom. Her body hurt, her lungs burned. She teared up as she managed to sit upright on the toilet, panting from the effort. Returning back to bed was just as painful, she had no appetite for the food on the tray, she wanted to go back to sleep but her body was in agony.
"Hello?" Clover whispered, wondering if she had dreamed that Erika had returned. How much time had passed? She pressed the heel of her hand into one of her eye sockets, wanting to believe that Erika was back, that she was safe, that she would come soon and comfort Clover and take the pain away like she always did. A knock on the door drew her attention away from her misery. "C-come in!" Clover gasped, a black set of ears poking inside. "You're awake!" Maple bound inside, her eyes filling with tears. "Oh, thank goodness you're up! I told them not to give you anymore of that tea, you can't sleep forever!" Clover wanted to though, her body was in agony. "Clover wants to see Erika," she whispered as Maple hugged her. "Okay, I'll send someone to go get her. You need to sit up though, come on, let's get you changed." With much patience, Maple helped Clover out of pajamas and into clothes.
"Maple, Clover cannot serve purpose anymore. Clover is useless," her hands shook far too much, she was too weak to walk on her own, there was nothing Clover could do for anyone anymore. Alchemy would be nigh impossible in this state. "Don't say that, you're not useless!" Maple cried, throwing her arms around her sister. "There are people that need and love you," did they though? Clover felt as though all she ever did was let people down. She could no longer be a hero, she couldn't bring smiles to people's faces. She couldn't heal the sick or restore justice to Min City, she was just another victim of the tragedy called life.
"Come, let's open up the window and get you some fresh air." Maple pushed all of the curtains inside to let the light in, she lifted Clover up easily, placing her on the window seat carefully. Clover shivered and Maple ran to get a blanket to cover her shoulders. She threw the glass panels open, the fresh air trickling inside of the stagnant room. "You should eat a little, you're gonna become a skeleton if you don't!" Maple warned, pushing the tray towards her.
