Hatch’s family has a history of strange and mysterious gifts, but there doesn’t seem to be any real rhyme or reason to the types of these gifts or who gets them. It runs in Hatch’s mother’s side of the family, but it skipped her mother’s generation entirely, and Hatch is the only one of her siblings to get it. Things seem to break less in her presence, and she can fix things far more easily than most. Sometimes, she can fix things just by touching them, other times, she finds it much, much easier to fix things than anyone else. The energy drain required for it is relative to the size of the object she has to fix and the severity of the break. She once managed to fix her father’s car and save him several hundred dollars, but had to sleep for an hour or two immediately afterwards. She hasn’t yet found the limit of what she can fix, but if something is broken into many small pieces, she can’t put that back together. Man made materials are considerably easier for her to fix than organic materials.

Hatch is undoubtedly striking. She’s on the taller side of average, even if her slightly slouched posture doesn’t always show that. She’s usually found with her curly hair shoved into a messy bun, eyeliner roughly smeared around her eyes and tinted lip balm always just within arm’s reach, not putting that much effort into her appearance but still managing to pull it off. But when she dresses up and puts in actual effort into her makeup, she looks like a different person, her cheekbones highlighted and all attention drawn to those striking dark eyes. She and her hair are often at odds as, more often than not, the curls have a mind of their own, but she’s gotten better at maintaining them.
Hatch’s style is often androgynous and a tad old-fashioned, inspired by some of her favourite movies and instagram accounts. She loves oversized blazers, light blouses, and simple trousers. There’s a surprising amount of plaid and a surprising lack of casual clothes, but she always manages to pull it off. On the rare occasion that she gets dragged out to a party, she surprises many with fitted black dresses, showing off her hourglass figure. Both of her ears are pierced twice in the lobe, with her right ear also having a tragus and a rook, and her left ear two helix piercings and her daith. She has a sprig of lavender on the right side of her ribs, the planets on the back of her left forearm, and tiny stars on the left side of her chest.

P E R S O N A L I T Y:
Hatch isn’t exactly what you’d call charming. Her family raised her to be ambitious, to do what it takes to get where she wants, and then didn’t like it when she did exactly that. She was expected to be all of the above and yet still somehow be suitably eloquent and pleasant, the epitome of a lady. Instead, they got Hatch, who really couldn’t care less about what people think of her. As far as she’s concerned, the most important thing is that people don’t walk over her. She doesn’t care how pretty they think she is or how pleasant she is. Her brains and her work ethic is what she wants to be known for, and she doesn’t care how she gets there. She’s abrasive and doesn’t believe in wasting time in pleasantries. She doesn’t seem to make friends as much as end up with friends who can tolerate her harshness. If she’s at a party, she’s there to drink, have a fun time with her friends, and find somebody hot. Not make friends.
Even as unpleasant and harsh as she could sometimes appear, Hatch still has her good sides. She’s got a wicked, sarcastic, and dry sense of humor, often accompanied by a wry smile and a raised eyebrow. She’s a big believer in tough love. She’ll sit and listen to you sob your heart out, she’ll supply you with food, but she’ll also tell you to pull yourself together, call you an idiot, and tell you that you just need to get laid and you’ll forget it. She’ll do your calculus homework, but she’ll subject you to lengthy explanations on it under the cover of making sure you understand it in case you’re asked about it. But she’ll always, always help without hesitating. She’ll happily play wingwoman as required.
Hatch is insanely driven and ambitious. For years, she never once doubted that she could do anything she desired. But an argument with her father before starting college planted the seeds of doubt in her mind. Everything she’d done since then has been to prove to herself that she can do it, and anyone who dares insinuate that she can’t is likely to get the sharp edge of her tongue. Nothing less than perfect will do, as far as she’s concerned.
Q U I R K SXA N DXO D D I T I E S:
Puts pens behind her ear or in her bun so she doesn’t lose them.
Always has her nails painted black and they’re always chipped.
Writes notes to herself and scribbles parts of maths equations on her wrists and arms.
F E A R S:
Hatch fears being ordinary, being just another person in an office somewhere. She fears losing her ability, as she feels it’s what really makes her unique. Even though she’d never dare admit it, she’s also afraid of being alone.

Hatch’s family has an odd relationship with the arcane. It seems to favour the females, but has a habit of skipping generations. Her grandmother and all of her siblings had some form of gift, including the men, while the next person in the family to have any sort of gift was Hatch herself. Harmony’s parents took pride in their normality, in how well they fitted into the world. Harmony’s father’s family owned a large number of businesses, while her mother was the head of finance in a large corporation. They had three sons. Harmony was somewhat unexpected, but her family was delighted at having a daughter to show off.
But when Harmony’s ability became apparent at the age of six, their opinion of her changed slightly. She was sent to live with her grandmother, who was given the order to teach Harmony to control it so she could appear “normal”. The five years she lived with her grandmother were some of the happiest of her life. It was there she found her love of mathematics. Her grandfather was a mathematician who had worked on a number of space missions and who was now teaching in the nearby university. Her grandmother didn’t believe in suppressing Harmony’s abilities and instead taught her to embrace them, which lead to a greater level of control. She had just turned eleven and was home alone when there was a knock at the door. Two policemen awaited her.
Her grandparents had been killed by a drunk driver. She went back to live with her family, but the young girl was far from the elegant young lady that her parents wanted her to become. She was angry at the world for taking away the people she loved and at her parents for sending her away in the first place. She had zero interest in their dinner parties where they tried to show her off, and would either be found sitting in a corner with whatever mathematics textbooks she could get her hands on or would be making anyone that dared to talk down to her feel as uncomfortable as possible. No matter how much her parents tried to change it, her grandmother’s lessons on standing up for herself were too deeply ingrained. She began referring to herself as Hatch, a nickname her grandfather had jokingly given her one day that stuck. As she grew up into a pretty young lady, her parents began to try and set her up with the sons of business partners. On one notable occasion, Hatch managed to drive one particularly arrogant young man to storm out in humiliation after she picked up on the fact that he was about as bright as a rock.
Her family wanted her to attend a more well known college such as Harvard or Yale and study something like pre-med or law, something prestigious that her family could take pride in. Instead, she chose Cascadia, the college her grandmother had attended, and picked as many maths and physics classes as her schedule would allow. Her excellent grades meant she got a full scholarship. She now only goes home when she absolutely has to and spends as little time as possible at home.
