a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by NeverEndingFlip

Groups

The United Pokemon League is the federal government of Ruula and the governing force behind it's military.

Description

Name: Winter Sakkio

Age: Sixteen

Gender: Male

Weight: 165 lbs

Height: 6'2"

Hair Color: Snow White

Eye Color: Crisp Blue

Skin color: As Caucasian as possible.

Apparel: Often wears a long sleeved white T-shirt with blue jeans with standard shoes, socks, and unmentionables. He tends to take a simplistic approach to style, meaning that's all he wears for the most part. His only accent is a necklace with a blue water drop, signifying a potential preference to Water-Type Pokemon.

Personality: Winter is calm, cool, and collected. While he speaks with directness in battle, he will often talk softly and confidently to other people. His youthful appearance as well as his overall neutral demeanor gives the impression that he's relatively inexperienced. When looking at a person with his blue eyes, most people always get the impression that he's looking through them, like he's in their head somehow viewing their thoughts and planning around them. He's relaxed towards life and tends to enjoy the philosophy of stopping and smelling the roses.

Personality: The Pokemon that forms the closest bond with Winter, Lucky was Winter's starter and together they've been through just about everything on his adventure. Winter and Lucky made the joint decision not to let the Squirtle evolve. Winter made that decision because he loved his starting Pokemon just the way he was and it also brought along a Facade for Lucky to hide behind during battle. Lucky agreed because he didn't want to change into what he believes to be the Brutal Blastoise and also because he enjoys the rides he takes on Winter's back and doesn't want to lose that. Lucky is a very smart Pokemon. He is often independent in a lot of ways and in many ways, the relationship between him and Winter is a mutual partnership in terms of battle. Lucky understands why Winter chooses what he chooses in terms of moves, but if he knows it's a wrong choice, Lucky will adjust on his own. For the most part, Winter is okay with this.

Moveset:
Hydro Pump- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The foe is blasted by a huge volume of water launched under great pressure.
Iron Defense- (Steel-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Move. The user hardens its body’s surface like iron, sharply raising its Defense stat.
Aqua Tail- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The user attacks by swinging its tail as if it were a vicious wave in a raging storm.
Surf- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. It swamps the entire battlefield with a giant wave. It can also be used for crossing water.
Blizzard- (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. A howling blizzard is summoned to strike the foe. It may also freeze the target solid.
Brick Break- (Fighting-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The user attacks with tough fists, etc. It can also break any barrier such as Light Screen and Reflect.

Abilities:
Torrent- Powers up Water-type moves in a pinch.
Rain Dish- The Pokémon gradually recovers HP in rain.

Personality: Flow is one of the three Eevees Winter found during his travels and is the second one to evolve once Winter managed to find a Water Stone. In Winter's primary set, he will often switch between Flow and her other two Pokemon brothers. This keeps challenging trainers on their toes as they wonder which two of the three he'll bring out in each round. Flow is very affectionate towards Winter as he saved her and her brothers' lives. Because of this, Return hits very hard. She is often the most affectionate one, so Return hits the hardest with her. Extremely territorial when it comes to Winter, she finds trust issues in those that hurt him and will likely guard any human Winter chooses to let close.

Moveset:
Return- (Normal-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. A full-power attack that grows more powerful the more the user likes its Trainer.
Scald- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The user shoots boiling hot water at its target. It may also leave the target with a burn.
Rain Dance- (Water-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user summons a heavy rain that falls for five turns, powering up Water-type moves.
Acid Armor- (Ghost-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user alters its cellular structure to liquefy itself, sharply raising its Defense stat.
Muddy Water- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The user attacks by shooting muddy water at the opposing team. It may also lower the targets’ accuracy.
Aurora Beam: (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The foe is hit with a rainbow-colored beam. It may also lower the target’s Attack stat.

Abilities:
Water Absorb- Restores HP if hit by a Water-type move.
Hydration- Heals status problems if it is raining.

This keeps challenging trainers on their toes as they wonder which two of the three he'll bring out in each round. Hyper is the jumpy one of the three and is often seen running around. He is very affectionate towards Winter for saving his life as well as the lives of his siblings. Because of this, Return hits much harder with him. Hyper may be the most gullible of the three as is too lovingly hyper when around any human. He is notorious for leaping on other trainers and tackling them to the ground.

Moveset:
Future Sight- (Psychic-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. Two turns after this move is used, the foe is attacked with a hunk of psychic energy.
Morning Sun- (Normal-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user restores its own HP. The amount of HP regained varies with the weather.

In Winter's primary set, he will often switch between Glist and his other two Pokemon siblings. This keeps challenging trainers on their toes as they wonder which two of the three he'll bring out in each round. Glist is the hardened one of the group as he is only loyal to Winter and Winter alone. He is very affectionate towards his trainer, all thanks to Winter saving his life as well as his siblings'. Because of this, Return is very effective with him. He often has trust issues outside Winter, his Pokemon, and his siblings. Keeping shy when others interact with him, he likes to lay from afar and watch. If Winter gets in trouble, Glist is only one leap away from going against anyone who dare attack him.

Moveset:
Return- (Normal-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. A full-power attack that grows more powerful the more the user likes its Trainer.
Frost Breath- (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The user blows a cold breath on the target. This attack always results in a critical hit.
Barrier- (Psychic-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user throws up a sturdy wall that sharply raises its Defense stat.
Ice Beam- (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The foe is struck with an icy-cold beam of energy. It may also freeze the target solid.
Hail- (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Status Effect. The user summons a hailstorm lasting five turns. It damages all Pokémon except the Ice type.
Blizzard- (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. A howling blizzard is summoned to strike the foe. It may also freeze the target solid.

Rio ended up in Winter's possession as one of the last Pokemon Winter caught in the Kanto region. It had taken the combined power of Flow, Hyper, and Glist to take him down on Mount Silver. To get on his good side, you have to prove your mettle against him.

Personality: Mane is by definition the odd duck of the bunch when it comes to Winter's team. While his team comprised mostly of Water and Ice Types, Mane was one of the weirdest friends Winter ever made. Winter was given him as a Cyndaquil by his first trainer who didn't want him anymore due to his utter hatred for Pokemon battling, not of Pokemon themselves. Surprisingly, Winter and Mane hit it off very well and he is now one of the regulars on Winter's front six as the plot twist for anyone who thinks they're fighting just a water trainer. Mane is rather lazy and enjoys laying on top of Winter when he sleeps, a habit formed as a Cyndaquil that he never grew out of. He is a fierce fighter, however, and protects Winter like a father protecting his cub. After all, he did take Mane in when no one else would.

Moveset:
Flame Wheel- (Fire-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The user cloaks itself in fire and charges at the foe. It may also leave the target with a burn.
Inferno- (Fire-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The user attacks by engulfing the target in an intense fire. It leaves the target with a burn.
Swift- (Normal-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. Star-shaped rays are shot at the foe. This attack never misses.
Protect- (Normal-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. It enables the user to evade all attacks. Its chance of failing rises if it is used in succession.
Double-Edge- (Normal-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. A reckless, life-risking tackle. It also damages the user by a fairly large amount, however.
Solar Beam- (Grass-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. A two-turn attack. The user gathers light, then blasts a bundled beam on the second turn.

Abilities:
Blaze- Powers up Fire-type moves in a pinch.
Flash Fire- It powers up Fire-type moves if it’s hit by one.

Personality: Sumo, being the Shiny Shucke she was, was always used to attention. So when Winter and his team passed on by without a second thought, she wasn't going to have any of that. She literally followed them until Winter decided to capture her...just because she wanted to be. Since then, the two have always been together. Sumo's defensive capabilities are mightily impressive despite having nearly zero offensive capabilities upon catching her. But Winter was patient and more than willing to teach her. Now, she is often found as one of the toughest opponents to take down on his team. It does take a lot of food to sustain her, however!

Moveset:
Encore- (Normal-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user compels the foe to keep using only the move it last used for three to seven turns.
Power Trick- (Psychic-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user employs its psychic power to switch its Attack with its Defense stat.
Bug Bite- (Bug-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The user bites the foe. If the foe is holding a Berry, the user eats it and gains its effect.
Rest- (Psychic-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user goes to sleep for two turns. It fully restores the user’s HP and heals any status problem.
Earthquake- (Ground-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The user sets off an earthquake that hits all the Pokémon in the battle.
Toxic- (Poison-Type) A damage dealing Status Effect. A move that leaves the target badly poisoned. Its poison damage worsens every turn.

Abilities:
Gluttony- Encourages the early use of a held Berry.
Sturdy- It is protected against 1-hit KO attacks.

Personality: Derp is a Pokemon Winter caught just because he looked like fun. A great fighter and an even greater companion, Derp is one of the weakest members of Winter's group of Pokemon simply because he doesn't put him in battle enough. That's fine with the Quagsire, as he's not really up for getting his butt knocked around either. He's more like the mascot for Winter's team and his personality. Don't get him wrong, though. He'll fight if he has to and is still a fairly tough Pokemon to beat for anyone not expecting him. His charming and derpy grin has a way for throwing unsuspecting trainers.

Moveset:
Slam- (Normal-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The foe is slammed with a long tail to inflict damage.
Surf- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. It swamps the entire battlefield with a giant wave. It can also be used for crossing water.
Dive- (Water-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. A two-turn attack. The user dives underwater on the first turn, then hits on the next turn.
Mud Sport- (Ground-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user covers itself with mud. It weakens Electric-type moves while the user is in the battle.
Safeguard- (Normal-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user creates a protective field that prevents status problems for five turns.
Yawn- (Normal-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user lets loose a huge yawn that lulls the foe into falling asleep on the next turn.

Personality: Articuno acts in any way a Legendary Bird should. While Winter did technically defeat it in battle, he decided against catching it in fear of upsetting the balance the Legendary birds set across the land of the Kanto/Johto region. He also didn't want to catch a Pokemon who wasn't willing to join him and especially one that he wouldn't be able to strategize with. Instead, they became friends. At the call of a whistle, Articuno typically shows up to aid in the fight. Winter chooses to call him in cases of extreme emergencies that the Freeze Pokemon could help him in.

As the newest and the weakest addition to Winter's team, she doesn't exactly find a lot of love in anywhere except combat. She falls a bit on the mischievous side and enjoys playing cruel pranks on Winter and his team. While the other Pokemon ignore her or shoot daggers in her direction, Winter stares at her with affection, like he sees something more from her than her current behavior lets on. Meanwhile, Rio keeps the Weaville from going too far, typically in a brutal fashion. Weaville is the Pokemon that likes Winter the least, making Frustration one of his more powerful moves. Winter has still not decided a name for this Pokemon.

Moveset:
Icy Wind- (Ice-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The user attacks with a gust of chilled air. It also lowers the target’s Speed stat.
Dark Pulse- (Dark-Type) A damage dealing Special Attack. The user releases a horrible aura imbued with dark thoughts. It may also make the target flinch.
Hone Claws- (Dark-Type) A non-damage dealing Status Effect. The user sharpens its claws to boost its Attack stat and accuracy.
Frustration- (Normal-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. A full-power attack that grows more powerful the less the user likes its Trainer.
Metal Claw- (Steel-Type) A damage dealing Physical Attack. The foe is raked with steel claws. It may also raise the user’s Attack stat.

History: Winter was born ironically in the summer. Both of his parents are big in their hometown where his dad is an extremely successful scientist and his mom is the local Pokemon expert. They both primarily focus on Water-Types and wish for his son to be a dominant Water-Type master. However, Winter had somewhat higher ambitions. While he never wanted to lose touch with his roots as primarily Water-Type, he wanted to expand into something much more intriguing to him. At the age of ten, he got his starter, a Squirtle he affectionately named Lucky. Together, the ventured out into the world to achieve his ultimate goal, starting small and then aiming higher and higher.

High enough to become the champion, that is.

After a legendary showdown against Lance, the interim champion who took the place of Titania after she stepped down, he took him out using only four Pokemon, earning his place in the Hall of Fame and claiming his throne as the Champion of the Kanto and Johto Region. Since then, the year has passed quite smoothly for him as he was introduced to the Region in a new light. Apart from a spar with a Team Rocket affiliate in his hometown of Celadon City, a near death experience in the Ice Path that helped him befriend a Suicune, his travels through the Johto Region with a foreigner from Terra, and a showdown against an unlikely opponent that garnered another friendship, nothing of massive significance happened to the Region as a whole.

But that didn't mean he had yet to do anything. In a promise to Titania, the former champion, he went up to Mt. Silver and challenged the unshakable robotic figure only named "Blue". The two battled, but in an unfortunate incident, one of Blue's Pokemon disappeared onto the mountain. Stopping the match, Winter offered to help her find it, making an acquaintance out of the machine. He had also helped Touko and Fuchsia City's Gym Leader investigate a mysterious crime scene in which a place only known as The Reginald Estate was vaporized by a mysterious blast.

Since these adventures, Winter has proven himself as a face to the people he now holds a public office for and has earned their trust. He hasn't stepped into the national politics as of yet, however. He hasn't even met face-to-face with Grand Champion Iris yet, even though the door is open for him.

So begins...

He was home...

Looking down among the massive Celadon City he'd grown up with his whole life, Winter couldn't help but take a deep breath of nostalgia. These streets were his streets he'd always traverse with his childhood friends, who many have moved on from this place. There was the massive hotel he'd always sneak into and play ding-dong-ditch with the guests. The casino...well he wasn't ballsy enough to even dare try entering that place. And of course the gym, where Erika and her all-female staff took on challengers of many varieties. Watching the amazing Pokemon battles that took place was mesmerizing to him. Even now, he considered watching a match or two while he was in town, although the Gym Badge Circuit never quite appealed to him as his newer passion did.

"Squir-squiiiiirrrrtle?" Lucky tended to show an impressive ability to communicate with Winter just by the tonality of his Pokespeak and this was no exception.

Winter chuckled, "Yeah, buddy. We're home."

"SQUIRRRRRRRRR-!" Lucky seemed to cheer, hopping off Winter's back and rushing off towards the massive city. Winter couldn't help but laugh at Lucky's excitement to be back in Celadon City. After all, this is where the two first met. This was where their elite partnership began.

Before he lost sight of the elusive Squirtle, Winter caught up with him and they walked side by side into the city.

As they walked around, Lucky started pointing at the hotel, expecting that to be their first stop. Unfortunately for him, this was one of those rare times when Lucky was wrong.

"Ah, we're not going there yet," Winter told him, "We need to stop by the Poke'Center first."

Lucky had a confused look on his face and with every right to have one. None of his teammates were injured. They had enough Pokeballs of many varieties. They had just ate a nice picnic in the field before heading here. To Lucky, it seemed like he had no reason to head there first.

But Winter definitely did. "I need to see if Amy still works here." Another confused look by the Squirtle told Winter to keep explaining, "Amy was one of my old friends here. I never got a chance to say goodbye to her when I left town." Which was ironic because Amy had been Winter's closest friend and he'd had time for all his other friends except her. He wanted to hopefully catch up with her before he left town again to continue on his personal quest.

Lucky nodded in understanding and tugged on Winter's sleeve; that was his universal sign for "Let me piggyback!" Crouching down, he let the Squirtle hop on his back once more before entering the Poke'Center.

There were a couple of customers meandering about the place and one person at the checkout counter, asking a question. The atmosphere was odd considering the Poke'Center was often packed with people. But at the same time, Winter had never been in here this time of day. Perhaps it was always like this.

"Squirtle squirt?" he heard Lucky in his ear, pointing at the drinks. It was obvious he was thirsty.

"Shhh," he held a finger to his lips, "They'll have drinks at the hotel."

Another nod from Lucky. Winter made his way up to the counter, behind the other male in the store. Something seemed slightly off-putting about his presence. Lucky could feel it too as he shrunk just a bit lower on his back. He kept it in the back of his mind just in case it became relevant, but he didn't want to seem too judgmental from the get go. He didn't know where this man came from, there fore he couldn't strike an opinion about him.

So he waited patiently behind him and watched the possible transaction go on between him and the lady behind the counter.

There wasn't much luck on finding any stones in this shop. They were hard to come by anymore. All he could do is request a few potions and pokeballs to catch pokemon for his studies. With that, Ak Mun paid for his product and turned around,

When Ak Mun turned around, he came across Winter and his Squirtle. He would size Winter and his Squirtle up. No reason to stir up trouble here.

"Do you know where I can find some specialty stones to evolve my Pokemon? I doubt you can since your pokemon is still a Squirtle, but you never know." Ak Mun spoke, smirking at his Squirtle comment.

A sniff of fresh air had settle the mind of this young male, he had inhale, then exhaled. He was quite familiar with this place, to familiar. In fact this was his home town, celadon city which is located in the kanto region. He had known every in's, and outs of this place, and knew where everything was at.

Nothing much had changed since he left, but he did feel good being back from a small journey of pokemon hunting, he still wasn't finished, as he still wishes to catch more, and more. Filling up his pokedex with fascinating creatures from all shapes, size, and form. There will be some days where he wouldn't be able to catch one, and maybe just spot one.

Once he was done scanning a little handful of the area that he went onwards to the city. Harada had worn a white t-shirt with black strips twisting, and turning, he then wears black medium size shorts, and black leathered arm warmers. His hair was flaming hot red, and was freakishly long, long enough to almost touching the ground, but it came down towards his ankles.

Harada gazed through the city with his light golden eyes, as he see's kids, and parents filling up the city.

"Man what a good feeling to be hear, but I won't be hear to long, now then where is this guy. He should be around here." He says scanning the place.

"Squirrrrr..." Lucky's indignant response to Ak Mun's comment would show due to the slightly crossed look he gave the man. Winter would know Lucky was acting indignant by the way he dug his paws into his shoulder.

"Easy, buddy," he reassured Lucky and pet him on his paws. That caused Lucky to loosen his grip, but he still had that look of Come at me bro! on his face. Ak Mun just simply didn't know better, Winter reminded himself.

However, he wasn't going to let a snarky comment like that slide.

"I'll be honest. Not the best way you could've opened," Winter crossed his arms and raised his brow at Ak Mun, "You need my help and that typically won't get it. Whether my Squirtle is evolved or not, I still know how to make a Pokemon evolve. I'll chalk it up to potential social anxiety or never learning some manners as to why you said what you said. Still, watch yourself."

Now that he got the straightforward awkwardness out of the way, he told Ak Mun what he wanted to know.

"The PokeMart is your best bet. Here in Celadon's, they have just about everything you can think of. I've actually seen a Master Ball for sale once. High priced, but reasonable for an item like that. They'll have your specialty stones."

He stepped around him since he was done with business here at the PokeCenter, but he kept facing him as he did so. Something told Winter that he shouldn't turn his back to this guy.

"The PokeMart is down at the end of the road. Turn right as you exit this building and follow the road down. It's the second to last building on the right hand side. I hope you find what you're looking for there."

"Squir! Squir!" Lucky's way of saying Good riddance!

He turned around and began talking to the cashier on duty. "Hey, is Amy around here?"

" 'Fraid not, darling," she replied. "She hasn't been here for a couple years."

Really now? Winter thought. "Where'd she head off to?"

"Oh she started her whole adventure! Got her Bulbasaur and ran for the hills! Man, could that girl run. Said she's gonna try 'n complete the circuit."

"Oh," was all Winter could say. Now he felt more guilty than ever. But he understood her dream. She had been wanting to complete the circuit since they were very little. Now she was going to try. Winter had every belief she could do it, too.

"Say, ya do look familiar. Why you lookin' for Amy anyhow?"

The question kind of caught him off guard. "Oh, well I'm Winter. Winter Sak-"

"Oh, I know who you are!" the cashier interrupted, pointing at him. "You're that boy Amy always hung out with!"

"I...guess so..." Winter wasn't sure how to respond, so he responded in an unsure tone.

"Oh, Amy talked about you all the time, darling!"

That also caught him off guard. "Really? What'd she say?"

The cashier laughed, "Ah ah aaahhhh! Can't tell ya that one! A girl's thoughts are for a girl's ears only! That's my motto!"

As irritating as it was for Winter to hear that, he could respect it. "Alright, well thank you anyway."

"Any time, darling! Hope to see ya around!"

"Yeah, I'll probably be back. See ya then, maybe!"

"Squirrrrrtle!" Lucky waved at the cashier as Winter walked out of the PokeCenter.

Winter was kind of disappointed. He'd really set his heart on seeing Amy again and catching up. But that wouldn't be happening anytime soon. At least he could look forward to seeing his parents and friends again. Maybe finding out what they were doing now. But first, he had to check in.

"Come on, Lucky! Let's go to the hotel!" Winter told him.

"Squir!" Lucky nodded in agreement.

Winter smiled knowingly as the Houndoom was struck directly by Flow's Muddy Water, a critical hit to throw some overkill into the already effective attack. It didn't need the mud in it to potentially blind the Houndoom. It was out the moment the water struck it. Karen, despite having tasted defeat, smiled instead as she returned her Pokemon to it's ball.

"Well, aren't you good," she said to Winter, "I like that in a Trainer."

"Yeah, well it wouldn't do me much service if I was bad," Winter laughed. The Vaporeon that had just defeated the last of the Elite Four sat down by him, allowing for Winter to embrace her in a hug. She had done exceptionally well, Winter thought as she scratched behind her ear, a place she thoroughly enjoyed to be scratched behind. Flow purred as he did so.

Karen crossed her arms as she watched, "Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."

Winter knew she was referring to Lucky, whom which he'd sent in to take on the Gengar. The Squirtle had been his companion since day one and he never lost sight of him since. Sure, Sumo was quite the attention hog herself, but even she respected the bond that the two of them shared. It was unbreakable at this point.

Winter gave a glance at the unconscious Pokemon beside him. He didn't have a Pokeball to put Lucky in as he had a natural hatred towards them. So he was left there while the battle concluded. Now, he sat down next to his unconscious buddy, nodding in agreement, "I think so too."

"I like your style. You understand what's important. Go on, the Champion is waiting."

Once more nodding, he reached into his pack and pulled out a Revive Potion. It was his last one. He could give it to someone of more functionality on his team, like Glist or Mane.

Instead, he gave it to Lucky, because he deserved to see this through...all the way to the end. When he and Lucky would be crowned as the Champion. He wasn't going to do this without him.

Lucky stirred as the potion began to take effect, waking him after a moment. He gave a weak croak of confusion.

"S-squir...?"

"Ah, don't worry buddy. I've got a Hyper Potion for ya as well." He took the potion out and proceeded to spray it on Lucky. A few seconds later, the Squirtle was back to full and ready to kick some butt with him. As Lucky found his way onto Winter back, the trainer thought for a moment, putting Flow back in her Pokeball. I only have four Pokemon going into this...

He was a bit nervous about that. Titania Brightsmith wasn't a Champion to mess with or take it easy on. She was the Champion, after all. And she'd have her full team with her while his would be partially incomplete. With all their abilities and all their tactics. In retrospect, he should've brought some more potions.

But hindsight was always 20/20. And while he couldn't change the past, he can definitely change the future. Winter still had two Pokemon that had yet to battle as he made his way through the Elite Four. His two best pieces on his side of the board in his opinion. And Titania would have no clue what she'd be facing, unlike Winter who'd studied the Pokemon she uses and prepped for it.

In short, both trainers had their advantages and disadvantages. Now, the final fight had to commence to see who was the best of them all and who deserved to claim the title of Champion in the Kanto and Johto regions.

"Come on, Lucky!" he shouted enthusiastically as he opened the door to the final chamber, "Let's go show Titania who the real champion is!"

"Squir squir!" Lucky responded with just as much energy as they charged into the last room.

"Uh, wait," Karen called after them, "She's not-"

But the door had slammed shut. Winter was already rushing to the final chamber, with just as much excitement as he had nerves. Down the long corridor he went, each step in front of him a reminder that this was the home stretch. It was make or break time. His whole life had been leading up to this and it was time to bet it all on the table. To show the world that he was ready to write his name in history and claim this title.

And finally, he was there. Except...Winter stopped at the unfamiliar sight that awaited him. Standing in the center of the room was a trainer he hadn't expected to see here. Winter had assumed this man had retired when Titania had beaten him in battle and taken his spot. Yet here he was, in the flesh, black cloak and all.

It was Lance, the former Champion of Kanto and Johto, the Champion before Titania.

"Uh...hey," Winter half-waved awkwardly. It was clear he hadn't been expecting this one, "Where's Titania? I thought I was going to battle her."

"There was once a time when you might have, challenger," came the voice Winter had been expecting. "However, some time ago I decided to retire. With the League unable to organize a tournament to determine my successor, I simply named Lance the interim champion until such time as someone had cleared the League Challenge. Stay your hand, dragon master."

From the Hall of Fame room in the back emerged a vision of cold beauty. Fire-red hair contrasted by a sleek, black and silver gown with metal accents on the wrists, knee-high boots, and a poofy red skirt reminiscent of a native of the faraway Unova region, a Pokemon called Bisharp. "Young Trainer, please follow me to the back before the media hounds show up. Lance, you and Karen field questions while I fill a vacancy in our great nation's hierarchy."

Titania's gloved hand beckoned to Winter. "If you wish to earn it fair and square, I suppose you could battle Lance anyway, but given the shape your Squirtle seems to be in I must advise against it. There is much to discuss, new Champion...I must explain the duties of your new role." God, how she wanted to just drop the act already. Just a little longer...a little longer...

Winter wasn't sure what to say. He'd already attained the title? He looked from Titania to Lance and back again, confusion wrought all over his face. He hadn't paid attention to that much media in the previous three years, but even he should've known that Titania would be stepping down. That would've been plastered all across Ruula, not just in the Kanto and Johto regions.

This was not the victory I was expecting...

It was kind of disappointing. He wanted to earn it so badly, to walk in and claim his place in Ruulan history, not have it handed to him like a spoiled rich kid. Besides, it wasn't about the title so much as it was the battle for him. He enjoyed the challenge and the strategy behind it...and most of all, it was fun! Talk about a great ice breaker. He met a lot of his friends through battle, win or lose. And he wanted to be friends with Titania.

When she mentioned Lucky, his gaze immediate went back to him. Sure, he may have been knocked out by Karen's Gengar, but he had so much fight in his eyes. In it's own way, it was admirable how determined he was for this. This was their quest, not Winter's alone.

Titania was concerned for his Pokemon and so was Winter, but he didn't come here to have the title handed to him. Still, the decision didn't rest with him...

"What do you think, Lucky?" he asked him, "You think you still got the fight in ya?"

"Sssssquir!" The Squirtle pounded his fist together, telling him all he needed to know.

Smiling determinedly, he turned back to Titania, "Well, there you have it. I think he wants to fight on. And so do I." He pulled out a PokeBall and held it out to them, staring Lance in the face, "Lance! I challenge you to a Pokemon Battle, for the championship of the Kanto and Johto region!

Lance sighed, looked over to Titania, then back at the kid after a solemn nod from the woman. "He reminds me of my younger self. And as the steward of the Indigo championship, it is my duty to see that the title is handed to a worthy successor. You have already proved your worth by fighting your way to me, but if you insist, I'll give you a taste of the legendary power of dragon Pokemon! Let's go, Salamence!"

A massive, blue, four-legged beast with red crescent wings hit the field, letting out an intimidating battle cry before looking down at Winter, eager to see what this little brat had left in the tank.

"Don't mind me, I haven't watched a good, honest fight in quite a while. It's a balm to my soul to see the younger generation vying for their goals," Titania added. She walked daintily to a chair in the corner and rested in it, eager for the match to start.

Winter smiled calculatingly at the Salamence presented in front of him. Now this was what he had hoped for. Six Pokemon will be harder to beat with only four at his disposal, but he was up to the challenge. He honestly wished he had Glist here, given that he would prove most effective against the Dragon-Type master. But he had other work arounds.

"Alright, Flow! Let's show him what's what!"

Out came the Vaporeon, with a flick of her blue fin-shaped tail and large gill-like ears. She landed gracefully in front of the Salamence, looking up at it with all levels on intensity. She finished off the last of the Elite Four and now she was going to make the first move against Lance.

"Okay, Flow, Acid Armor first! This guy's gonna hit pretty hard!" Flow started to go through the process of liquefying herself slightly, making her much more resistant to Physical attacks. But would it be enough?

"Haha!" Lance laughed, and even Titania couldn't hold back a giggle. Starting with a boosting move...well, if it was 6v6 it would make sense to cut loose right away. But without knowing it was 4v6, it just looked like foolishness. "Salamence. Use Shadow Claw!" One of its forelimbs became sheathed in dark energy before it lunged forward for a vicious strike, and the move had a good chance of hitting a weak point to not only do more damage, but also ignore the defense boost. This was why the dragon master chose it over the more straightforward option. He figured an Ice Beam was about to come out any moment.

But Titania knew better. She once had that look in her eyes when she battled Rithika all those years ago. It seemed like a bad dream now...that look of desperation, of needing to press on against all odds, of having to go until there was nothing left to give. Winter had the same motivation to give all he had, but was powered by positive emotion. To see how far he could go, instead of trying to run away from something. He would make a good Champion...if he could survive.

Winter winced as he saw Flow take the hit and fly backwards. But the Acid Armor had done it's job. Despite the critical hit chance, it didn't hurt as much as it would have had she not done it. Flow shook it off, looking like she could take a few more hits of similar fashion...maybe five or six.

"That's what I'm taking about! Use Return!" Winter shouted gleefully, fist raised.

Flow was already back on the Salamence, hitting him with everything she had. It would seem a bit weird, maybe even foolish, to come at the Dragon-Type with a standard Normal-Type move. However, the move did more damage the more the user liked the trainer. Winter had even considered teaching it to Lucky, given that it's power would likely be maxed. But it's power was maxed with Flow. After all, he'd saved her and his brothers' lives. For that reason, all his Eevolutions knew Return...and could hit insanely hard with it.

It was Lance's turn to be confident in tanking the hit due to Salamence's earlier Intimidate. Leading researchers at the prestigious Smogon University had concluded that even a single Intimidate dropped a Pokemon's physical attack power to about 2/3 of its base, disregarding other factors in play. Still, that was an impressive attack. Also, no Ice Beam?

"Your insistence on us having a fair battle is admirable, but you stand no chance as you are against my mighty dragons! Salamence! Use Dragon Claw!" This time, a quick swoop up followed by a divebomb allowed the dragon to bring both of its forelimbs to bear in a brutal double slash attack. Vaporeon was one of those Pokemon that could absorb multiple hits...he had to get the knockout before something bad like a Scald burn came out.

"Cool it, Lance. Champ or not, he's still a kid," Titania admonished from the corner. Iris aside, generally children weren't able to give as well as they could get in a verbal sparring match.

He scoffed at Titania's comment, "I may be a kid, but I've heard worse."

Winter was debating on which route to take here as the Dragon Claw found it's mark. Flow was quite durable in a fight and he was counting on that to hopefully make it past the first two of his types without her being knocked out. However, he wasn't sure how much damage she could take. Salamence was a power hitter, no doubt. So why not take that out of him?

"Flow! Aurora Beam! Let's go!" he called.

The Vaporeon let loose a rainbow beam aimed straight at the Salamence. Dragons did not like ice, which was the thing Winter was counting on. Not to mention it naturally hit pretty hard and it would lower his strength when he struck next. With his attack lowered as well as Flow's, the playing field would be even again.

It did more than strike hard. It knocked out the Salamence on the spot, a heap of blue scales collapsing to the gilded floor of the final challenge room. "Yep, there it is," Titania sage-nodded. Lance gave her a dirty look as he recalled his trusty lead.

"All right! I thought this would never happen! Let's go, Gyarados!" A huge blue serpent towered above Vaporeon, giving another intimidating glare as he came out. "Gyarados! Use Thunder Wave!" The air smelled of ozone as quick jolts of electricity started jumping around, making Titania start in her seat as they closed in on Flow the Vaporeon...or whoever Winter had in mind to continue the battle.

"It's making sense now. If you were at even strength, you would have taken out the Salamence right away and rode that advantage. The fact that you bothered to set up means you're not firing on all cylinders," Titania finally deduced. "How many have you lost? Two? Three? Reminds me of one of my title runs back on Terra. But that's all the more reason to not make mistakes and keep the pedal to the metal. Don't give up, kid. Lance wants to psych you out."

Winter's jaw dropped at the same time the Salamence did, "Wow...that was...wow! Good job Flow!" A celebratory call responded, letting him know that she was just as excited about the hit. He knew the beam would do some hard hitting damage, but he hadn't expected it to wipe it out entirely.

Flow's next opponent was Gyrados, to which Winter decided to keep Flow out for. She would be able to absorb many more hits the Water/Flying type was going to plan on throwing at her. And while he had a Pokemon that knew an appropriate move, he figured he could hold those cards at bay until he truly needed them.

However, he hadn't anticipated Gyarados knowing Thunder Wave. It hit rather quickly, causing Flow to stiffen in paralysis. Winter was surprised by the status, but he was always anticipating Electric-Type moves and had plenty of gear to counter such.

He gave a reassuring smile to Titania, "Don't worry. I have a few tricks up my sleeve myself." To which he appropriately acted by rolling up his sleeve, revealing a Paralyze Heal Potion. "I'm always prepared for nasty surprises and the like. Paralysis is one I take very seriously."

He then proceeded to spray the potion on the Vaporeon's back. The electric sparks jetting out from Flow faded away, allowing for her to move again. Satisfied, he turned back to the Dragon Master.

"Sorry Lance! I got plenty more where that came from!"

"I can do that more times than you have status healing potions, I bet," Lance countered. "Thunder Wave again." Again the sparks came out, closing in on Flow and trying to force a switch. That Acid Armor was pesky, and Gyarados didn't have anything to smash through it...but Vaporeon couldn't do much back either. The difference here was momentum. As soon as Winter was forced to acknowledge the reality of the situation, Lance would boost up and try to do some damage himself.

Titania might have been rooting for the kid a bit, but this just made her hide her face in her hands. What was she going to tell Valorie? This kid was her age, and yet he did what she wanted so badly to do and couldn't. Probably just as well, because she probably couldn't handle the non-battling parts of being on top of an entire region.

The Thunder Wave found it's mark once more. Lance checked his Paralyze Heal Potion count. Seven...he tightened his lip in disappointment.

Lance was right. He couldn't keep using those. The Dragon-Type master would win in the long run. He'd have to change tactics...

An idea was forming in his head, however. An immediate solution. He'd have to keep Flow paralyzed for now and give Lance the attack edge the next time he sent her out. But if things worked out like he hoped it would, he'd take care of that Gyarados in one swing. But would the Pokemon he had in mind be crafty enough to have the item he was hoping to have?

Winter smiled. Only one way to find out... "Flow, return! You did very well!"

He called the Pokemon back into her PokeBall, pulling out another one immediately.

"Alright, Sumo! It's your time to shine!" he cried as he launched it.

A very clever choice of words, Titania and Lance would discover, as the Shiny blue Shuckle appeared in it's shiny blue shell. Her eyes narrowed at the massive Gyarados in front of her, raising a brow as if she was saying, "Don't you give me that look! I will CUUUUT you!" She could take a couple hits herself, given her absurdly high defense. But why would he send a Pokemon out that had a weakness to Water-Type?

This was the opportunity Lance had been searching for. "Good boy. Now, Gyarados! Use Dragon Dance!" The serpent flattened its body and focused its energy while focusing massive reserves of power to increase its speed and attack power.

Titania practically did a spit take, having made a guess that the dragon dance would be largely useless. As the saying went, "you don't fuckle with Shuckle." It had a whole bunch of status moves to mess with just about any strategy, and the bulk to survive the inevitable retaliation.

"Let's go, Gyarados! Hit him with a Waterfall!" The interim champ wasn't expecting a knockout, even with the power boost. However, the flinch hax was very real. And maybe he could get a two shot.

Not so fast!

Winter saw the opportunity the moment Lance said those two words. And he was going to use it.

"Sumo! Encore, quick!"

The Shuckle managed to get the move in right before Lance was able to call his next attack. When Lance's Gyarados heard the instruction, all it could do was flatten it's body once more, performing the Dragon Dance again. Winter kept his composure behind a sure grin on the outside, but inside he was dancing. Lance finally slipped up!

"Alright, Sumo. This is the opportunity we've been waiting for. Let's switch this up! Power Trick!"

Another clever choice of words as Sumo's Attack power and Defense power changed around. It was now currently the strongest hitter on his team with a massive attack power.

Gyarados went for that Dragon Dance once more. Winter was ready to strike.

"Okay, use Bug Bite!" Winter called out, dismissing the Shuckle's Earthquake move as it would have no effect on the Flying-Type.

The bite that it inflicted was strong. Very strong. Gyarados would feel that one. It wouldn't knock him out immediately; likely it would in three more hits. But the persistence of Encore would carry out through the majority of that if not all of it.

Sure enough, Lance's Gyarados made the familiar motion and Winter took the opportunity to use Bug Bite once more. The second bite seemed to hit much harder than the first bite had, indicating a critical hit. He clenched his fist and grinned widely at the luck. One more Bug Bite would do it.

But now things were gonna get risky. Encore would only work for so long. How many more hits could he dish out before Gyarados would be able to use another move again. Winter just had to hope that it would last at least one more turn.

And it did! Breathing half in relief, half in determination, he pointed forward, "Sumo! Finish it off! Bug Bite, one more time!"

The Gyarados collapsed from the attack, falling from it's levitated state and hitting the ground below. At the same time Lance would return his Pokemon, Winter returned his Shiny Shuckle. "You did brilliant, Sumo! I'll need you later!" he whispered as he put her back in the PokeBall.

But what a great start, Winter realized as he waited for Lance's next Pokemon. Flow took a couple of hits, but for the most part the two were even, four Pokemon apiece. He had started off with the disadvantage and now he'd all but dug himself out of that hole. Now, he needed to keep it up! Lance was still an opponent to be reckoned with, even with only four Pokemon left. He had earned the title of Champion at one point for a reason. He grinned curiously as he waited for the next move.

"Are you fu-" "LANCE! He's a kid! Language!" It was evident who wore the pants in that relationship, but soon it would be academic. Lance sighed in disbelief as he recalled Gyarados, hiding his shame behind his billowing cloak with his other hand. "How is this possible...for a Shuckle to hit this powerfully...you must have sacrificed its defense for offense somehow. But you did nothing about its speed, I bet. Altaria, let's go!"

A large blue bird with cloud-like wings hit the field, letting out a loud hum in a pathetic attempt at intimidation. "Its power is no joke, though! Altaria! Use Dragon Breath!" A rainbow-colored jet of fumes poured forth, washing over Shuckle's side of the battleground in case Winter tried anything fancy. If Shuckle did in fact trade away defense for offense to pull that trick, there was no way Winter wasn't aware of being a sitting duck. Either he stayed in and took the likely KO, or put his replacement in danger with the gases having a chance to paralyze as well as cause damage.
