Zak looked through the one way glass into the interrogation room, at Derek Adams. Zak Resdon read his file again, looking it over. It was his job to question Derek Adams loyalty, nothing more. He had the flight record from the ships Nav computer here in the report, but that did not mean he did not have time to sneak off on a shuttle, or secretly meet with someone by sneaking him on. Or any number of different ways to communicate.

He read over the file again, and then made his way into the hallway, and then entered the interrogation room. "Hello Derek Adams. Do you know why you are here?"

His answer did not really matter for the line of questioning, but he would try to make him think it did.

"Tell me, while searching the galaxy, what systems and planets did you fly to and visit? I want you to name every planet you searched..."

He took out a datapad and began taking notes on everything Derek Adams said, so it could be compared later. Lets see if you are as loyal as you claim to be...

Derek folded his hands in front of him on top of the table he sat behind. He hadn't been surprised to learn that he was currently under investigation, but he seemed calm enough about the fact.

"I've had a lot of assignments that take me around the galaxy," Derek replied. "You'll need to be more specific."

"I mean your assignment where you persued the great Leaders of the Aschen Empire. The leaders of your own nation? The very one that you knew I meant..."

He opened a file, with several pictures on it.

"Now, you were on that ship with the heretic. Surely you must have had some idea of what she would be like. Yet, as far as I can tell, there was no such report of any suspicious behavior. You are telling me you noticed nothing amiss?"

He then looked at another bit of information. "Additionally, please clarify about why you went to Terra in the first place during this search. Your record does not seem to indicate a reason why. Care to explain?"

Lets see where this line of questioning goes...

"I wasn't aware a reason was needed to rescue our soldiers marooned there when the Taiyou attacked," Derek replied. "We pulled over a hundred wounded men off that planet - men that others had left for dead rather than risk getting past hostile lines."

"As for your earlier questions regarding the girl," he continued. "She was assigned to my ship. It's not my place to question the orders of my superiors," he explained. "I was ordered to locate and bring the Emperor and his wife back to Langara. I had no cause to think the special projects girl would make an attempt on their lives once they were located."

"I see. Yes, I guess you did. But, tell me this. Was that why you went to Terra, or is what what you were told was why you were going to Terra? Now, I have all these files here I could just read to tell me, or you can make my job easier and tell me yourself. Who suggested the idea of going to Terra? Did you suggest it to Whisper, or did she suggest it to you?"

"And, you are claiming you saw no previous signs to indicate aggression or hostile behavior on the part of Whisper at all? You should know about everything going on board your ship..."

He made note of all of this, and then looked back at him. "What about the three Terrans you brought on board? Who authorized bringing them on, and why? Who's idea was it?"

Then, he turned his attention to Derek's own record of minors. "After all, you seem to have a history of small outbursts. Perhaps it escalated?"

Zak then put a different piece of paper in front of him. "Now, records only tell me so much. I have a question for you, and it would be in your best interest to answer honestly. Did you follow all proper protocol throughout your little 'adventure'?"

"The girl proposed it. She had been among those stranded on Terra. Her and Admiral Nagala were able to repair a bi-frost node to return to Langara, but the wounded wouldn't survive the strains of bi-frost travel and had to be left behind. She, like I, wasn't willing to leave our soldiers to the mercy of Taiyou brutality."

He shook his head at the next line of questioning.

"The girl had shown remarkable resolve in serving the Aschen Empire, and in aiding our soldiers. She was strange I will admit, but she had never displayed any sign of hostility or aggression to anyone aboard my ship.

"As for the Terrans brought aboard. I authorized it. It was only with the help of the Patronus that we were able to extract our own wounded from the mountains they were holed up in. One of their own had been wounded in the crossfire with the Taiyou and required Aschen medicine if he was going to survive."

"And no, the extraction from Terra wasn't authorized."

"I see. Tell me, why didn't you see if any other Aschen vessel was around then? You claim to be a man who follows orders, yet you seem to be able to instantly divert to Terra instead of following such orders. I don't know what you would call that, but I would call it a 'contradiction'".

Zak took notes on what he said. "And, to be clear, you both morally agreed that saving loyal Aschen soldiers was worth diverting from orders then?"

"I see. That makes sense...for one of them. But why the other two? Were they wounded too? Should I go check the medical records as well?" He actually already had them, but that was besides the point. "So Whisper proposed it, and you agreed with her, diverting from the orders that you claim as to why you were doing all this in the first place...".

His next question had a very clear direction, however. "And, from what I can tell, would it be safe to say then you both had similar moral ideologies and experiences? Almost identical, even?"

"There were none," Derek replied. "Our fleets had already pulled out of that sector. It was just us. It would have taken time to return to the main fleet, time that those men didn't have."

"The other two Terrans requested passage. They were friends of the wounded boy. We were in hostile space, with no support from our fleets. It would have taken more time to return them to Terra than to simply bring them with us."

"And no. We both shared an interest in the recovery of our men stranded on Terra, but so did most of my crew. That is as far as it goes."

"I see. But, there is also this one hiccup. If that is where your moral connection end, then would you say you look up to her?"

Zak looked right into Derek's eyes. He wanted to see his face when he answered. This answer could be it...

If he lied, Zak had him. He awaited the answer, tapping his pen on the table.

"And I also have another question. What did you do immediately after Whisper attempted to take the lives of the Emperor and his beloved wife?"

"No I don't look up to her," Derek replied. "What kind of question is that?"

He shook his head.

"I had never met the girl before she was assigned to my ship a few days prior. We shared an interest in extracting our men from Terra, nothing more."

"And I wasn't present when she made her attempt on their lives. I was being debriefed by Admiral McIntyre aboard the Triumphant Declaration while Whisper and Echo were en route to retrieve the McGregors from Arastel. By the time I had even heard of it, the matter was already resolved."

"So, that is what you claim. Strange, considering what you said earlier. 'The girl had shown remarkable resolve in serving the Aschen Empire.' Your exact words, actually. And that sure sounds like you look up to her. In fact, it sounds exactly like admiration. And strange, how you mention 'serving in the Aschen Empire'. While yes, she appeared to serve us, her overall goal appears to have been the murders of our beloved Emperor and his wife. You may have a high rank and a fancy ship, but at heart you are a soldier. Or, at least you should be..."

Zak was incredibly suspicious now. He had Derek in a contradiction. He had just said he did not look up to Whisper at all, yet he had stated before, in his defense of not knowing her intentions, that she had "shown remarkable resolve in serving the Aschen Empire". He used his own words, not read off of anything, and after knowing about Whisper's true intentions, and said those words.

"You see, what we have here is a contradiction. You say that you did not look up to her, yet you made a statement of admiration towards her. I am sure you can understand how this might confuse someone. After all, how could both statements be true? The fact is they cant. Which means you lied to me".

"Now you're putting words in my mouth," Derek replied. "I would say the same of any of my men who performed admirably in the field. A display of pride in the performance of your men in no way correlates to what you're talking about. They aren't even in the same ballpark. You might as well say a parent looks up to their child for performing well, or a teacher to their student, or an officer to their soldiers."

He shook his head. "The girl performed well in her time under my command. I had no cause to think she would do anything like she did. But you clearly already have your opinion on this matter, and will find a way to twist my words into whatever it is you're looking for, so unless you're charging me with something, I think we're done here."

"But, parents and children, teachers and students, officers and soldiers, they are not equals. Your words indicated admiration, but equalilty. And no, I only have my suspicions. Your fate is not in my hands, but those of my superiors. It is not my fault you said what you said. And I never put words in your mouth. I quoted the words that came out of your mouth, word for word, letter for letter".

"And after all, the way you spoke about her did not indicate officer to subordinate, but soldier to soldier. I only told you what I found, and asked you questions about them. Especially with all that missing time when your communications was blocked. So much missing time, who knows what could have been discussed or what could have been done..."

Zak stood up, waiting for his answer while also getting ready to go. Clearly, if Derek did answer his last questions, he would not answer any more. But, Zak was suspicious. He would make sure to log all of it, all of his thoughts and connections, and Derek's responses. "Have a nice day".

High above Langara, and Caprica City, thousands of small satellites began to come online, somewhere between low orbit, and the thermosphere, a Hard Light Shield began to form electro-quantum mechanics similar to a Watchtower's Aegis field. A Top secret Aschen project dubbed 'Lunatea's Veil' Which was incorporated into Langara's defenses sometime following the Galactic War.

Shimmering like sunlight on water across Langara's sky, the barrier began to stretch as far as the eye could see.

Feidlimid made a request across the beleaguered engineering through damage control comms, "Damage control, Critical, please assess transit support field systems in sector tau-psi-6. Possible tampering. It is not aligned correctly with neighboring sectors and it would be good not to explode right now."

The temperature was rapidly rising in the primary coolant crucibles for the engine and he had to keep enough head-end for the shockpoint jump to initiate cleanly. The ship was already starting to hum with the load on inertial dampening systems attempting to keep rei from turning the crew into red paste.

As the Cobalt Glaive gained altitude from the spaceport, several ground based emplacements that dotted Caprica City's towering skyscrapers, and the surrounding mountains swiveled to life, they almost immediately began to garner firing solutions, as dozens of heavy anti-orbital gun batteries fired, causing deafening booms to reverberate all throughout the city, as school bus sized ferric-tungsten slugs were hurled up at the ship, calculated for trajectory at near relativistic velocities, igniting the atmosphere into a white hot plasma as they screamed through Langara's atmosphere.

Raid sirens began to blare through Caprica City's streets, as Langara's defense fleet began to move in for a star-side intercept.

Leading the charge was the Reverence II 'Esteem' But there was little they could do on the other side of the Aegis field, so the fleet moved with coordination, and haste only Aschen ships seemed to be able to pull off, they moved into position.
