Penny fears that the voices inside her head will overcome her or that her nightmares may actually be the end of her. She fears for her life everyday and just tries to get by through smiles and kindness. Her biggest fear is one day hearing her mother, brother or father's voice inside her head. She fears their power of manipulation resulting in uncontrollable actions.
Her biggest weakness is her lack of slumber. Without a solid 6-7 hours of undisturbed sleep Penny's functionality deteriorates. This has been occurring often since the curse settled in. She has been getting less and less sleep resulting in the voices getting louder, the nightmares becoming more real, her fuse shortening and her concentration shattering
Penny has had a dark life for such a kind soul, as they say, the kindest have suffered the greatest. When she was two years old her father passed away from a horrific illness the town called "the darkness." Watching her father suffer and pass was Penny's first memory and one she's never been able to shake off. She doesn't remember her father, his features have blurred with time and photographs only remind her of that horrific day.
Her childhood from then until the age of seven was lovely. Life had given her a perfect commercial break with her mom and twin brother Niall. She laughed everyday, played whenever she could and made friends all around town. But things took a turn at the age of seven. She and her brother Niall played innocently in the sandbox at the local park when a stranger approached them. All Penny remembers from that day was the dark shadow figure that stood above them before she blacked out and woke up safe in her bed, only to hear that her brother was missing.
A couple years passed, it was dark and her mother began to drink. Penny helped wherever she could, she would play quietly in the corner and cuddle her mom through the long lonely nights, until one day, Niall was found. The police called them in the middle of the night to make the announcement, Penny and her mom rushed to the hospital to see him. They ran into the hospital, exasperated, Niall laid in the bed, frail, ill and afraid. He glanced at his sister and mother, reached out to them and whispered "Soon there will be no escape." In that moment, his eyes closed and he slumbered for eternity.
The universe never ceased it's shadow. At the age of fifteen Penny lost her mother to a battle against lung cancer. It was no surprise considering the amount of smoking and drinking her mother did. And along with the loss of her family members she had seen death in the face of a few friends, thus the rose on her forearm currently has seven petals.
Despite all the darkness, the sadness and the struggle, Penny always remained optimistic. Seeing so much death has led her to take each day as a gift though her recent curses has made such optimism fade more and more.
At present, Penny worked at the local coffee shop when one day the world around her stood still. She was pouring a coffee for a regular customer when suddenly a boom of voices began to scream in her head. She dropped to her knees, the pot of coffee spilled all over the ground and burned her bare legs. She covered her ears in agony until a few minutes passed when the voices became silent whispers, threatening her and encouraging her to kill herself. Penny rushed home without a word, showered and jumped into bed unsure what else to do. The worse was far from over as in her slumber she fell into her first lucid nightmare where she watched her father die over and over again, thirteen times to be exact.
Since that day, Penny has been sleepless, trying to stay positive and smile. She does her best to distract herself by diving in deep into her work at the cafe, talking with friends and simply avoiding any chance at deep thoughts.
