Introduction
Everyone feared the worst, but no one knew anything about the incident. It was as if he simply vanished. When the police went to search his home they found it empty, all of his possessions were gone, and all the servants and such could not be found for questioning. His personal guards didn't even know a thing. Days, weeks, months passed by and they kept searching, but to no avail. After a year a funeral was held for Jian, and a monument erected. Every year on that same day his friends, family, fans, the media, would all gather and say a prayer and such, hoping that if he were alive still he was well, and if not that his soul was resting peacefully. This went on for a few years, but eventually the name Yang Jian faded from the pages of newspapers, flickered off the TV, and was more or less forgotten by all but his biggest fans.
Now, twenty years have passed. A new generation of young fighters has been born, most of which have only heard of the old masters name, but never actually learned anything about him. They are competing in tournaments, for money, for glory, some for their lives, which for the most part are normal. That is, until one day, one the first day of spring, a certain number of young fighters receive a rather plain letter in the mail. The letters are actually small scrolls, with hand brushed words from Yang Jian himself, which read;
"Dear (your name here).
It is most likely that you have never heard the name Yang Jian, and even less likely you know how much meaning it once carried. And that is exactly why you must continue reading this letter.
I am Yang Jian, and many years ago I was the best martial artist around. I am still a master, however, I am now nearing the end of my journey through life, and so I am looking for a pupil to whom I can pass on the ancient arts I have learned over the course of my life. Please, do not think for a second that this will be like any training you've gone through in your life, for it is not. Death is always an option with this sort of style. Now, enclosed you will find, on the back of this letter, a map leading to my home on an island called Kohaku, as well as a simple talisman. If you are willing to give your life to become the next master, then please, come to my island school, and present this talisman, and your destiny will change forever..."
While the letter explained very little, most anyone who revived such a letter could look the information up online and would find archives of information on Master Jian, but very little on Kohaku Island. And as far as the talisman, it was very simple; a leather string with a simple yin yang medallion, and on the back was a small dragon etched into the metal.
For some of the fighters who revived this letter, the information above and the mentioned items were all they received, but for others, such as those who would never be able to afford such a journey on their own, a large sum of money was inclosed, so secure safe passage if they should attempt the journey, or whatever they liked if they simply kept it. And while several of these letters were delivered, only a small percentage of those who made the journey would even be allowed to enter the school to begin learning from the master and his people.
-=-=-=-
Basics-
20 years ago Yang Jian was one of the most well known named. He was a rich, famous martial artist, and yet no one could explain it when he disappeared suddenly. He was in good health, a master of self defense techniques, so no one knows what happened. Now it has been learned, by a select few, that he is not actually dead, and is in fact alive and well, if not late in his life. He owns a private island, Kohaku Island, located somewhere south-east of China.
What's your role here? Well, you can play 1 of 3 parts-
1) A new, younger fighter who received the letter and come to Kohaku to learn
2) An instructor on the island, who has been there anywhere from just a couple months to a few years
3) A member of the Island Guard, the security force on the island
Now, here are some RP rules to remember...
1)This is not just about the fighting, this is also about character development, and the way our characters change their perspectives after coming to this island. After all, they will be faced with the challenges set forth by Master Jian, as well as have to live with complete strangers on an island where there are no ways of outside communication
2)Weapons...big issue here...you can use weapons, but this rp will have very little, if any, killing, and once you are actually in the school you'll rarely use weapons anyway, unless it's an outside of class kind of thing. This is called School of the Fist for a reason after all
3)You are not a badass here, not really. Most everyone on the island who isn't a student has been chosen by Master Jian, who is a martial arts expert, so he wouldn't fill his spots with wimps, but with other masters. So, no, they are not invincible, but neither are you, you just can't go around beating people easily here
4)We only need people who will be dedicated to this rp and will try to help uphold the feel of the rp, meaning if you just wanna fight, we don't want you here, but if all you wanna do is talk, this is not the place for you either. The people who join this rp need to understand that it isn't just about development, or just about fighting, it's a culmination of the two experiences in one storyline
Now, character sheets-
Name: (dose not have to be Asian...)
Age: (16 at the youngest)
Style: (can be real, made up, or you don't even have to have a 'style')
Appearance: (what do you look like? Pics are okay, but you'll have to add a little to them, such as height and clothing and things of the sort, as you won't be wearing the same thing all the time...will you?)
Equipment: (anything you brought with you to the island)
Back Story: (why do you fight? How did you get to the island? How did you take receiving the letter? Etc. doesn't have to be long)
Other: (anything else you wanna add about your character)
As far as personality goes, you can just leave that up to the story if you want. And remember, you can use and bring weapons, but you will not be killing, nor always using them, so maybe not be a sword master with no skills with your hands, k?
Any questions? PM me, or ask them in the OOC thread. The co-GM for this is Kurokiku. Have fun all!

[The Nest Morning, 1 Hour Before Sunrise]
Romeo was a little upset that he hadn't been able to complete his morning ritual, but the fact that he, along with all of the other students, the instructors, Master Jian, even Myra (who was still very angry at him and now avoiding Go), were all aboard what seemed like a rather normal cruise ship. Nice one of those you'd take a vacation on, but there were about five decks, plenty of room for everyone, and a large deck with a fighting area. There was also a large kitchen and dinging room, which is where Romeo was now, still a bit sleepy, slowly eating a bowl of cereal. It had been months since he'd had any, Jian didn't approve of the stuff, but he loved it. Looking around he could see that almost everyone was there, either eating, talking, or moving in and out of the room. Everyone except Ricky(?).
This is your captain speaking. The weather is good, skies are clear and it looks like it's going to be a warm, sunny day, so we should reach the harbor in about two hours from now. Thank you for your time. comes a voice over the intercom, screeching a bit at the beginning and ending with a crackle. He didn't sound too thrilled about the whole thing, and if Romeo had to venture a guess, he would say the man had been asked by Jian to come in, probably to repay a favor, sometime the night before with little heads up on the whole affair.
(sorry it's so short...)

The dining room was filled with the chatter of students, for the most part; nearly everyone was here, but they were missing at least an instructor or two (not that she ever really counted Master Ken anymore; he pretty much showed up for lessons and nothing else). She chewed slowly over her food, the time this took allowing her some space to relax, at least externally. Would anyone laugh if they knew she was so scared of a tournament? She'd never been in one before; her exposure to martial arts had been limited exclusively to Master Ling's thrice-weekly instruction prior to her running away from home and coming to the island. She did still feel guilty about that; her parents were probably worried sick. She had written to them every few days but never received anything in return, probably because they could not know where to have it sent.
The captain came on over the PA, and suddenly Mizuki's appetite was gone altogether. They'd be docking soon?! She had to go pack! Wait, no, she'd done that earlier. She tried to calm her breathing, reassure herself that everything would be okay, and it worked at least a little.
---
Shin, meanwhile, was up on the top deck, greeting the morning sun as he always did: by practicing katas and then meditating. He had weird eating habits anyway; if it were his choice, breakfast would be significantly earlier than it was. Luckily, the ship had been stocked to this effect, and the cook already awake when he was. So unlike Romeo, his morning routine was far from disrupted by the change in environment, at least in this sense.
He was going to need it, too. Hong Kong, eh? It's been a while... not long enough, though.

"Whoa, that breakfast buffet looks good," Hayden marveled, appearing in the doorway.
"Why are you all wet?" Hannah squinted at her brother's tall, lanky figure, illuminated from behind by the rising sun. Hayden shrugged as he loaded a plate with eggs... and maple syrup? Only Hayden, Hannah thought exasperatedly. The idiot was literally dripping; his damp blonde hair stuck to the sides of his face and splotches of water made a pretty pattern on the ground behind him wherever he walked. "Let me guess, you went for a swim with the mermaids?"
Hayden slid into the chair next to Mizuki and shook his head. "Close. It wasn't the mermaids. It was the dolphins."
"Wait, are you just kidding, or..." Hannah got a glimpse of Hayden's impish expression and decided not to finish her question. The answer would probably be another infuriating riddle.
"Oh, excellent, we're docking soon," Hayden said as the PA came on. He had greatly enjoyed the trip, what with the vast expanse of water (one could stare at it forever), the perpetual rocking motion, and the playful wildlife, but a large part of him was itching to get to Hong Kong. It was one of the few famous places that he'd never been to before, but the tournament was what he was really looking forward to. With so many different forms of martial arts present, Hayden half-expected that his eyes would be bugging out the entire time.

This was something odd to spring on them all of a sudden, but this was their first time not being stuck on that island in what seemed like years to Romeo, and he knew that if any of them were like him, they would rather have some fun before a big fight. He could tell that Mizuki was on edge, and from what he had learned of her that was no surprise. She had skills, and talent, but in his eyes she wasn't really a fighter, and this was going to be a big event. Hannah, well, he had never figured her out completely, but he figured she would rather fight. Hayden, another mystery, but he seemed like the kind of guy who wouldn't mind getting into trouble every now and then.
"Besides, it isn't like we can't take care of ourselves," he adds, "And besides, just one night, that's all I really want. One night just to be a tourist, not a fighter."
-=-
Ken, for once, was actually out in the sunlight, which made him seem like a ghost, still wearing his black clothing. His sword was strapped onto his back as he sat atop the navigation room, the wind blowing through his hair.
"They are all fools if they believe they can win this tournament..." he says to himself, "Kintaro is our biggest threat, and they will be wielding weapons, something my master disapproves of. The students will die if they aren't careful, and even if they aren't they will still be badly injured." This train of thought had come about when he was speaking to one of the students earlier, Ricky, who wielded a wooden sword with a near mastery of it. He had asked what the other fighters would be like, and that's when Ken had realized that only he and Go, the island guard, really used weapons.

Still... the others seemed pretty excited about it, especially Romeo, and he did have a point. It might help her take her mind off the tournament, actually, and maybe calm her nerves a bit. Of course, it might also just make it worse, if they wound up in some kind of trouble.
Even so, she was not the kind of person that could say no to a friend, and so she nodded somewhat timidly. "...I wish we could tell someone, but... it might be kind of nice to see the city a bit." She'd never traveled much, and even the shy Mizuki had to admit that the prospect of a little sightseeing and exploring a place like Hong Kong seemed really interesting. As much as she loved eating, sleeping, and breathing marital arts, she was pretty sure a break would be welcomed, if only for the sake of variety.

Hong Kong was only a few hours away and while she had increased the intensity of her own training as well as the content of the lessons, there was still so much that could have been honed and perfected. Things such as balance, patience, and chi had all been thoroughly explored they were rather softer and more subtle in nature compared to the weapons, blood, and shear amount of violence that usually reared it's ugly head in underground tournaments. Pai-an wasn't exactly nervous about the tournament itself; she had been in plenty of them. It was rather the matter of safety. Most people weren't like Master Jian, and would do anything to gain victory.
An attendant of the boat pulled nervously at Pai-an's sleeve, urging her to get off the railing. Pai-an complied without argument, shaking loose droplets of water out of her sleeves.
Padding across the deck quietly, she tapped Shin delicately on the shoulder twice. She was reluctant to disturb the man when he was meditating but it had been early last evening since anyone had said a word to her and she was craving some conversation. "Ah, good morning. You've said that you've been to Hong Kong before. Mind telling me what it is like?"They were approaching the dock soon, and with most of the island guard and instructors on board, it would be wise for a change of clothing before they landed. Something more civilian.

Hannah rolled her eyes. Boys will be boys, she thought, looking between Hayden and Romeo. Careless idiots... Of course, in their haste to explore the province, they had completely forgotten that not only would they be forced to drag their luggage around with them, but they would also have a hell of a time finding the hotel they were staying at. She was also willing to bet that should they follow Hayden anywhere, they would get hopelessly lost. Furthermore, she was pretty sure that besides herself and Hayden, nobody spoke fluent Chinese. Although Hong Kong was for the most part bilingual, you could always find yourself in trouble while trying to communicate with the natives of the alleyways. And Hayden's Chinese was...well, Hayden-ish. He had watched so many martial arts movies that his accent had developed an interesting Northern tone characteristic of the Shaolin monks, which probably wouldn't be too useful in the southern Hong Kong.
"Whatever, I'll come along," she finally decided. "If only to make sure you guys don't kill yourselves. Just one thing- we probably shouldn't take off as soon as the ship reaches port. I say we get all our stuff unpacked at the hotel first, and then we can head off- besides, you could do with a shower." That last comment was directed at her brother, who was still dripping with ocean water.

Giving his friends one more big grin he stands and goes to take care of his dishes before heading back to his room. He decides to take the long way around to burn off some energy, and along the way he spots most of the instructors. Pai-an and Shin were on the deck, probably talking about philosophy or something like that. Go was making his way to Master Jian's room, the big guy gave him a wave before disappearing into the ship again. Ken...well, if you understood the man he was easy to spot, always in the least likely place. This time, that happened to be the highest point of the ship...where no normal person should even be able to get to. As usual, though, the ninja was in his own dark, twisted little world, and barely noticed Romeo as he waved.
Finally Romeo was in his room. Locking the door behind him the first thing he does is take a quick shower, followed by making sure all of his belongings are gathered up. In truth he had less now than when he came to the island in the first place. Too many of his street clothes had been ruined. Now all he had, clothing wise, was three martial arts uniforms, which everyone had, made custom for them, two sets of street clothes, and then a small assortment of other clothing articles.
His personal uniform was a pair of black pants made of a durable material that fit snug around the waist and ankles, but loosely everywhere else, and a white, sleeveless, karate style jacket. The students of Jian had no official ranking, not from the island anyway, and so he chose a crimson sash to go around his waist.
With everything ready he gets into his street clothes. Black tennis shoes, blue jeans, and a black t-shirt. In place of the bandages he slips on his familiar black fingerless gloves. Once ready he heads back out onto the deck to watch as the harbor comes into view.

She asked about Hong Kong, and he cracked one eye, then opened both and stood. "Hong Kong, eh? Well..." He scratched absently at his chin, trying to think of the best way to describe it. "There's always something happening in Hong Kong, and there are entire sections of that city that never stop moving. There's so many people sometimes you think ya might drown in 'em, but for all that, you'll likely never be bored." He shrugged. "It's really something you have to experience yourself, though.
---
Mizuki didn't have anything that even remotely approached 'street clothes.' Still, she supposed it was best if she didn't look like a martial artist walking around on the streets of Hong Kong; she had a feeling that not a lot of people knew about the tournament, and the last thing she wanted to do was give away a secret that wasn't even hers in the first place. That said... she was going to stick out like a sore thumb.
Sighing, she figured there was nothing else to be done about it anyway and returned to her room, pulling her black-and-red kimono from her luggage with a shake of her head. Such garments were notoriously difficult to get into, but Mizuki had been doing it for so long that it took no more than a couple minutes.
The sound of the PA system met her ears, and she grabbed her things and headed to the docking point. "Well, I guess this is it, huh?" she asked aloud.

"I suppose I won't have to wait long for that experience." The Hong Kong harbor was only a small distance away, the captain of the boat bringing her in steady. The breeze was pleasant, but the much to familiar sent of city smog irritated Pai-an's nose. The island's air was always so fresh and clean. Such a shame it was to trade it back in for steal, soot, and exhaust.
Pai-an looked back in the direction of the harbor. It wouldn't be more then two hours when they reach the harbor. She scanned Shin's attire. "I think," she started off slowly, "that it is an appropriate time to make a change of clothing. We would look odd in a city wouldn't we?" Pai-an tugged at her robe. There was a change in clothing waiting for her in her cabin, along with a few personals.

Hannah drained her glass and stood up. "Better go pack. And you should change into some normal clothes," she told her brother, eying his baggy black pants. "Normal and dry clothes."
"Yeah, yeah." Hayden waved her off as he headed to his cabin. Hmm...normal clothes... He was pretty sure that his long hair (which had grown out considerably, seeing as he hadn't been anywhere near a barber shop since stepping foot on the island) and earrings would always mean that he could never look normal, but then again...he didn't really want to be beat up on the streets of Hong Kong for looking like a hobo. ...yeah, "normal" it was. But he hadn't packed anything other than his martial arts uniform.
Well. That wasn't entirely true. There was always the outfit he'd been wearing when he first left home.
Ten minutes later, Hayden walked out of the cabin, dragging his suitcase behind him. Hannah took one look at his tweed sweater, blue-and-black striped tie, and white collar, and then promptly burst out laughing. "You're wearing that to Hong Kong?"
Hayden shrugged. "Bout as close to normal as I could get."
"From the back you kinda look like a schoolgirl."
"From the front you kinda look like an annoying prat. Wait. You are one."
And with that, they devolved into some rather meaningless sibling argumentation, cut short only by the fact that Mizuki and Romeo were both now walking out towards the dock as well.
"I take that back," Hannah muttered, eying Mizuki's kimono. "You all look like a bunch of misfits. We are so going to get shot."

"Shot? You mean they have guns in China? I thought everyone settled their differences with kung-fu and worse those funny monk robes! This vacation is a jip, I'm never listening to Go and his travel agency again." He then proceeds to cross his arms and look away in false anger, but laughs a moment later and picks up his suitcase from the deck as they all start to unload from the ship. "I don't think we have anything to worry about. We're here for a friendly school rivalry tournament, right? I'm sure Master Jian has made sure this is all going down in a good part of the city."
Oh course, once again, Romeo was wrong. Soon after reaching solid ground once again they were all shuffled onto the Chinese equivalent of a Grey Hound bus and were off, heading downtown. Soon the streets were looking more and more dangerous, and dirty, the people more seedy, and honestly, Romeo felt a little too much like he was back home. He'd had to walk such streets for as long as he could remember, and nothing good ever came of them. Eventually they stopped at what looked on the outside like a rundown inn, not even a proper motel even, but one of those old world, no running water inns that travelers and thieves spent the night in.

"If you want, throw on your walking shoes. We'll take a tour. That is, if Pops doesn't already have plans for us." With that, Shin headed to his room. A man of rather spartan wardrobe generally, he didn't have much to choose from, but a dark pair of jeans and a black t-shirt was fine, right? It was obviously not a good idea to carry his swords around, but that wouldn't be much of an issue for him. He did slap on a watch, though; while he never really bothered to keep time more precisely than he could with the sun when on the island, it became a little more important when there was something like a tournament in the works.
He descended the gangplank to find that four of his favorite kids were busy arguing amongst themselves about the likelihood of getting shot in Hong Kong, but he led his tongue and instead followed everyone to the hotel, that term loosely applied, of course. He was pretty used to places like this, really; they were about all he'd been able to afford for the early part of his career. Still... it was kind of a dive, and Pops's budget could easily have sprung for something better.
Which of course meant there was a point. "Well, guys, no use standin' around gawking, might as well go check in." He ushered the group through and got everything arranged with the woman at the desk, handing around the room keys. Well, at least it was only two students to a room, and each instructor had their own. He was next to Romeo and Hayden, apparently Shin and Go were in charge of making sure all the school's boys behaved themselves. He envied Pai-an's much simpler task of doing the same for the girls a floor above.
****
If anyone had ever doubted that Mizuki was a sheltered child, her manner of dress and initial reaction to the end of town they were in would remove any such thoughts. She looked at everything with a wide-eyed mixture of horror and fascination, not the least among these the hotel room she shared with Hannah.
"Umm... Hannah? When we go out later, do you think you could help me find something more... normal to wear?" She was feeling considerably conspicuous, and despite Romeo's comment about gun control, she really was starting to wonder if they'd get shot. Some of the people on the way in hadn't looked that friendly...
She placed her red suitcase at the foot of her bed and sat down, immediately knowing that she'd probably get a better night's sleep on the floor. It seemed like she had a good deal to learn about the world outside her hometown, though this was perhaps not the most opportune moment to do so, what with the upcoming events and everything.

Being in no rush to get off the ship, Pai-an was the last to join the group at the hotel. Modern human civilization was a rather unwelcome sight compared to the beauty of Master Jian's island but there was no use in complaining. If there was anything to complain about, it would be the hotel accommodations; she wasn't quite sure what was cleaner, the floor or the bed sheets. At least there was running water.
"Hey," She peeked into Hannah and Mizuki's room, "you guy's doing ok in here? Please try to stay out of trouble. We don't want anything to happen before the tournament." The warning wasn't quite directed to the two girls, but it was a fair command to make sure that the other two guys didn't do anything too stupid in the city.

"Tsk Tsk." Said another fellow cooly. "I was only giving her happiness."
"You tried to get into her pants! you kissed her! MY woman!"
"Something you could never do." Retorted Juuza. "I was so close, too."
The thug's veins were about to burst.
"I swear to god! I'd kill you if it wasn't for the damn police!" He cursed in Chinese. he was obviously trying to be cool in front of his little friends.
"You should relax and drink more." Juuza replied. "I'd drink too, but I'm not one to mix potential customers and a hangover."
"Customers to what?!"
"A Beating."
"Aren't you scared of the cops?"
"The Fuzz? Meh. Getting locked up would help me train. I wouldn't do it if I didn't want to though."
"You speak like some kind of....Some Kind of...Demon! what are you, a machochist? no one wants to go to prison, or start a fight with me!"
"Call me what you like. I'm just waiting for you to crack under the pressure."
The thug was steaming. Juuza sipped his glass of water.

"Yeah, sure," she shrugged, flipping her suitcase open and tossing it carelessly on the bed. After fifteen years of sharing a house with Hayden, the word "organized" didn't carry much weight with her. At least the prospect of clothing-shopping still appealed to her. Actually, it more than appealed to her. Hannah was excited. There were no malls on the island, after all.
"This could be fun," she commented. "From what I've heard of Hong Kong, the streets are pretty much packed with retail and designer stores. We could try on everything from formal dresses to punk attire- you'd look funny in a leather jacket, but a sweater-scarf combo might match your face better. Oooh, you should try on a skirt for once, you'd look nice in a- oh, hi, Pai-an."
She wasn't really sure how much Pai-an knew about their plans to explore the city, but Hannah interpreted her words as "You can go to the city. Just stay out of trouble."
"We're all fine here," she said cheerfully as her suitcase slid off the bed with a resounding crash, scattering clothes all over the floor. Hannah winced and casually kicked some of it back into a pile with her foot. "Er...yup, we're all good. Thanks for checking in."
"No running water?" Hayden said in disbelief, standing inside what this "hotel" called a "bathroom". It was a...room. With no windows, thank God. And a hole in the middle of the floor. And...no sink. As flexible as Hayden was to new circumstances, he couldn't deny that he was rather used to an easy life; his parents were pretty well off, and the dorms at the island had just been incredible. Okay...so I guess I'll just take showers in the rain or something...maybe they have a river?
"Screw that, let's get out of here," he said, walking out of the bathroom. He was sharing a room with Romeo, and the mess inside was indicative of that fact. The suitcase was somehow stored safely in the closet while its entire contents had either been emptied on the bed or scattered randomly around the room. But it didn't bother Hayden too much- at least he knew where everything was.
"Romeo, you done packing? Let's go find the girls and get out of here. We can jump out the window if the instructors are watching."
