Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.

It was an ordinary, boring day for WCPD Sergeant Jason Harrison, sat at his desk and fiddling with a keychain. Sighing, he stared blankly at the report on his desk that he was procrastinating. He always got saddled with the ridiculously dull cases: shoplifting, vandalism, petty crime. It was so prevalent in this district that it was ridiculous.

Sighing, Jason stood up and wandered over to the water cooler near to his desk, taking a paper cup out and starting to trickle water into it. He tapped his foot impatiently as the water ran, paying little attention to anything, lost in his thoughts. His ex had texted him the previous evening asking to meet up this evening to work things out. Being still hopelessly in love with her, he had no mind for silly reports today. He just wanted six PM to come around.

If he had been paying attention, Jason would have wondered if the water cooler had always made that odd whistling noise for the few seconds before the rocket hit and put six PM out of his reach forever.

Downstairs, Vaene Celesine was sat in an interrogation room with a murder suspect. No words were being exchanged between them, but the sweat upon the small man's face betrayed the internal conversation going on between him and the telepath. Vaene's expression was a casual smirk - he knew that the man would slip up and give him a glimpse of what he was trying so desperately not to think about soon. After all, trying not to think about something only made you think about it faster.

However, any prospect of this revelation was dashed as the entire building was suddenly torn with a series of rumbling booms. Vaene jumped to his feet in shock, breaking the mental contact with the man and turning to face the one-way window of the chamber questioningly. On the other side his team leader, Ysai Seronin, was stood. -c-

'What's going on?'

'Explosions! Somebody's firing rockets at the station! The lobby's wrecked, and they hit the upper offices too!'

Swearing in Arachnian under his breath, Vaene shoved the door of the interrogation chamber open and slammed it shut behind himself. Dashing down the corridor, he met the scaled Ysai as she emerged from the room next door, and exchanging a nod they both made their way towards the end of the corridor that led out into the lower offices.

The scene that awaited them was carnage. Splinters and shards of glass and stone were strewn everywhere, crimson splatters decorating the areas nearest the blasts, and the cries of the wounded filled the air. Disoriented from the blasts, even those not wounded were sprawled on the ground or huddled by their desks - a few were trying to help the wounded, but most were still in shock.

Ysai wasn't about to let that lie, however. The dragonkin brought her hands together in a thunderous clap, drawing the attention of the room to her orders. "All officers on your feet! Those of you without advanced combat training evacuate the building - arm yourselves before you exit, and take the rear doors. All combat-trained officers are to arm themselves and report back here! Vaene, get this place walled off from another volley - Data, where are you? I want those weapons out there disabled!"

As the SSA's orders were carried out, the station sprung into rapid activity. Though still shellshocked, the officers' survival instincts were kicking in, and those who hadn't been exposed to the original blasts were quick off the mark, coming from private offices and the mess hall to arm themselves with the advanced weaponry the WCPD combat teams were equipped with. Only a dozen or so officers with that experience were present at the small station, plus Ysai's team of four - but it would have to do. -c-

Vaene darted forwards through the rubble, bringing his hands up to send a wave of telepathic force forwards through the room as he went, clearing rubble and protecting from any more incoming fire in a line before him.

Sound was not an issue for Vaene, thankfully. The telekinetic was acutely aware of movements around him, in full combat mode, and the high kinetic energy of the rocket quickly drew his focus. Even without line of sight, the Arachnian was able to turn and direct his energies at the rocket, catching it in midair and spinning it. The rocket spiralled upwards into the air, before Vaene detonated it and the charges within harmlessly in a bubble of telekinetic force.

"Vaene! Give me a target!" Ysai yelled, as the two ran to the front of the station and out onto the steps leading into it. Vaene's shielding surrounded them still, as he silently directed Ysai's attention to the window from which the rocket had originated. He could sense the mind within, but from this distance he could not assault it.

Ysai, however, could. Sweeping her arm upwards, the dragonkin launched a bolt of lightning at the window with impressive precision, guided by Vaene's telepathy. It was likely that Artyom would be able to escape being directly hit by the bolt given the time between his shot firing and the response, but the magical blast would likely catch him in its force.

As the officers joined Ysai and Vaene at the entrance, backup having been called for, Ysai ordered them to fan out and search for assailants, but by that point the attack team would be long gone.

Vaene swore for a second time in the incomprehensible tongue of the Arachnians as he was forced to direct his attention to what was apparently a barrage of mortar-fire, three quick bursts of telekinetic force detonating them in midair. By the time he was certain no more fire was incoming, the assailant was beyond his range.

"Shit." Ysai swore, "What just happened? Nai be damned..."

The wailing of sirens outside seemed to arrive just in time to say "Too late, suckers!" loudly as police cars started to pull up outside. Word had gotten out during the trip that it was the Church of Crime behind the robbery, and so as the response team were arriving, Sonya too pulled up in her own vehicle.

The blonde agent climbed out and adjusted her vest, making sure all the straps were in place after her hasty suiting up. She made her way over to where the officer in charge was instructing the armed police officers to position themselves at the perimeter. "I don't wanna call rank on you, Captain, these are your men - but I'm reporting in as Supervisory Special Agent with the SOD, Sonya Ballifrey."

The Captain saluted, "I know you, ma'am, name's Martin Gillford. You here to help I presume?"

Sonya nodded, "That I am. I have special interest in this particular group in relation to my current case. I'd like a word with anyone you bring in today, and I'm here to lend you a hand in handing their asses back to them if this goes sour."

Gillford nodded, then gestured for her to follow him as he approached the ring of cars that had been parked near the exit, holding a megaphone. "This is the WCPD! We have the building surrounded! Come out with your hands up!"

"What are we to do?" A cultist asked Ovus, the woman standing silently and just as statue-esque as before. The woman had dark red hair, obviously dyed, tied into a bun.

Sister Ovus' bun was for battle, she stood where she had as she awaited the inevitable battle. They had chosen a bank in the business district, the police were obviously going to arrive quickly.

"We fight our way out. A show of power." The woman said, a Russian accent coating her words. "We need to eliminate their cover. If only Umwa was here."

"Make use of your fire." Ovus ordered, several cultists approaching the entrance to the bank. In their hands were molotov cocktails, firebombs.

What better way to get the police to scatter from their cover than fire?

"We don't mind you rare, but we'll settle for charred until well done." A cultist shouted, he and the others stepping out tossing their cocktails towards the law.

"Get back from the fire!" Gillford's shout reached the ears of the officers as they retreated away from the incoming projectiles. "Get me a psionic front-line stat, I want any more of those things stopped before they do damage!"

The WCPD were a force built from the city they policed. If there was a race, an oddity, a creature that inhabited the city in any number? Chances were they had at least one on their side.

As a pair of psionic sisters moved up to start catching the fire, a pyromancer was already calming the flames nearest to him - though given the spread of them, he had his work cut out for him.

"Fire at will, aim to injure, not to kill!"

As the officers opened fire with their assault weapons, discharging small bullets with very little penetrative power that would embed themselves in skin before releasing electrical pulses to disable those hit, Sonya stood ready to move if she was needed. Her powers weren't best suited for a stand-off, and she only had her standard firearm on her without the subdue setting.

The slower of the cultists went down from the shots, others barely managing to make it back into the bank and take cover. "They're more prepared than we thought, they must have known it was us." A cultist told Ovus.

The woman only nodded, "Shall we fight fire with our own fire?" She asked, "Brothers and sisters, we go to war if only for a moment." Sister Ovus told her cultists.

The woman charged towards the exit, swinging her spear at the air. As she did energy shot out, shattering glass and destroying anything in it's path.

Ovus and her cultists charged, many of the cultists firing guns or making use of magical bursts of energy to do harm to their opposition.

The Church of Crime was diverse, the WCPD if they were robbing banks.

The battle lines were drawn, and the clash of powers swiftly turned the stretch of street outside the bank into a warzone. Sonya saw a police officer stride forwards and morph into solid titanium in time to catch a burst of magic to the chest and deliver a vicious knock-out blow to the face of the caster.

An officer was sent flying by an explosion at his feet, skidding for several meters and coming to rest against a car, as several people ran to his aid. The psionics deflected blasts everywhere they could, finding time to floor a cultist with a mental assault every few moments.

Amusingly enough, the pyromancer was still focused on putting fire out, rather than actually fighting. He had a focused, bookish look about him as he ducked a stray bolt of magic to carry on about his way. Strange man.

Sonya herself took this opportunity to leap into the fray, speeding forwards to slam an electrically charged fist into the face of the nearest enemy, her speed catching him totally off guard. She didn't want to go too far forwards though, for fear of getting caught in the crossfire, so instead she pulled out her pistol and took a few potshots for the legs of what looked like their leader.

"Gillford! We need that woman down, she looks like she's the one in charge!" Sonya shouted over her shoulder.

Gillford nodded, "Talia, Marissa - I want you to bring that woman down." he instructed the psionic sisters, who after a moment to get a lock on Sister Ovus, directed their mental abilities towards her in an attempt to overwhelm any defences and cripple her mind, rendering her incapacitated.

Ovus' armor absorbed most of the damage from the bullets, though the unexpected force seemed enough to cause her to stumble. "No." She said, looking in Sonya's direction. Ovus wasn't a fan of people who attacked her, especially cops.

The woman raised her spear, ready to attack until the assault on her mind took place. Ovus was resisting as best she could, eyes searching the area frantically. Possibly for the sources of her mental dilemma.

Suddenly her mouth opened, the blood of the dead and injured being forced from their open wounds. The blood soared through the air towards Ovus, find it's way into his mouth and up through her nostrils.

The woman empowered, her resistance to the mental attack becoming easier as the blood flowed towards her.

The woman spun her spear in a full circle quickly, energy shooting out from it. The energy was not force, but it was sharp. Those caught in the path cut in half. Vehicles, buildings, all of them suffering cuts as if struck cleanly by a Titan's blade.

"Get down!" Sonya barked loudly, the sisters issuing the same warning via telepathy. A majority of the officers' trained reflexes saved them as they dropped to the ground, the energy passing over their heads, but a number weren't so lucky.

Sonya didn't wait for the aftermath to clear. She was already in motion, inhuman speed carrying her forwards in a blur to shoot past any remaining cultists and deliver a furious flurry of electrically charged punches at Ovus' face only to zip out of range of her weapon just as quickly.

The sisters changed their tactic, aiming to wrench Ovus' weapon out of her grip to disarm her and prevent any more of the devastating discharges from it. They'd taken more casualties in that sweep than in the rest of the fight, and even though there were healers amongst them, there wasn't much you could do for someone sheared in half.

Sister Ovus was knocked back by Sonya's punches, the strikes sending her stumbling dangerously. The woman slammed her spear down into the ground to stablize herself and keep to her feet.

"Impressive. I am underestimating the Wing City police." Ovus said, taking a step forward. As she did her weapon was pulled from her hand. She watched as the weapon flew away, her first thought to run for it.

Instead Ovus charged the psionic sisters, raising both arms to show her forearms. A large number of small sharp disks shot out from the woman's bracers at the sisters at Ovus charged.

The weapon was dropped, sent spiralling away under its own momentum as the sisters rushed to shield themselves, catching the spinning disks as they neared, though there was a hiss of pain as one slipped through before the barrier was erected, embedding itself in Talia's arm.

Before her half of the barrier could waver, however, the solid form of the titanium woman strode into the way, deflecting the disks with her body.

"Good work, Danielle," Sonya murmured, recognising the woman from her previous SOD unit with a smile. Front-line response was far more Kalter's speciality than special ops, anyway.

Then she was darting forwards after Ovus, coming at her from behind to try and place her palm on the back of the woman's head and shock her into submission, even as Danielle placed herself in the Sister's path to block her charge, spreading her titanium arms as if to say "come at me".

The elite cultist was ready to throw a punch at Danielle, the blood from earlier empowering her. She was no Umwa, but the blood enchanced her strength quite a bit.

Before Ovus could close enough for the strike Sonya was already on her, palm to the back of Ovus' head. The shock stopped Ovus in her place, the woman reaching back quickly to grab Sonya's hand to attempt to pry it away.

Even as she resisted the shock and attempted to remove the hand she dropped to a knee. The cultist fought with all of her might to try getting back to her feet, but seemed to prove futile.

That was until she focused on Talia, the blood from the woman's open wound was an insurance policy for Ovus.

As she had done with the others around her, Ovus attempted to suck the blood directly from Talia's wound through the air and to the cultist for use in empowering herself.

Sister Ovus knew she didn't have long. She was starting to succumb to Sonya's sneak attack.

Talia shrieked as her blood started to flow from the wound, desperately clasping a hand over it in an attempt to stop it. Her sister, more conscious of the power that the blood would grant Ovus, attempted to pull it back away from her with her own psionic powers. At that moment, the pyromancer finally caught up with the fight, having put out the fires. Taking stock of the situation he calmly approached Talia from the side and, moving her hand aside, placed his own over the gash. With a burst of heat and fire that elicited another scream of pain from the psionic, the wound was cauterised.

"Sorry." he said, "Better than dying from blood loss though."

In the meantime, Sonya lifted her free hand in a fist, bringing it down at the back of Ovus head in an attempt to knock her clean out cold before she could empower herself. The other officers were mopping up the remaining cultists and tending to their wounded. There weren't a great number of dead, mostly those slashed in two by Ovus' weapon, but the injured were a lot more numerous.

The punch to the head connected easily, Ovus wasn't allowed the woman's blood. She was sure it would have been more than enough to make her escape.

Unfortunately for Ovus she was knocked out cold, face slamming against the cold ground.

Cultists scattered when the woman fell, the fight was lost. The dumber of the group charged back into the back, grabbing as many bags of money as possible for attempting to to escape again.

Why leave empty handed?

Cuffs fitted with magical dampers and controllable electrical pulses were slapped onto Ovus' unconscious form, and she was hefted to a waiting transit vehicle which would be escorted to the police station for the woman to be questioned. As the scene came under control, Sonya patted Gillford on the arm. "Nice work, Andrew." she said with a smile.

The Captain grimaced, "Too many losses today, Agent. We weren't prepared enough, we didn't get the anti-magic devices deployed in time."

"We'd have dead either way," Sonya said, her expression darkening, "These fanatics were practically throwing themselves on the sword just to leave a dent in us. Everyone here did as well as could be expected of them, as far as I'm concerned."

Gillford nodded, "You should get going so you're there to question their leader as soon as she's awake." he said, "I can take things from here."

"My thoughts exactly. I leave everything in your capable hands, and you can be sure that I'll tell the Commander and the Chief how well you did today." Sonya grasped Gillford's hand and shook it, before turning and making her way to her car to set off after the transit vehicle. Sister Ovus had some talking to do.

Sonya stood at the edge of the plaza with a group of officers from the WCPD. The explosion had called nearby patrolling officers like moths to a flame, and quickly word had reached her of the anomaly that had appeared there. "I want the area clear, you know what the people of this city are like - someone's going to try and jump into it and then their family will complain when they never come back, and frankly, I don't want to be dealing with that." she instructed, "Get a cordon set up, but give the thing a wide berth. We don't know what the hell it might do if you get too close."

As a dozen officers moved off to start carrying out her instructions, she turned to another. "You, wait here a sec," she said, "I need brains down here right now. Science brains, magic brains, I want anyone we can get who might be able to tell us what's going on here. Make a call to the academies."

The final man ran off to start making phonecalls, and Sonya stepped back to stare at the warping and shifting portal to... somewhere. A police line was drawn around the main area of the plaza until further notice, all civilians instructed to remain on the 'safe' side of it, and a call went out to officers to set up and guard against anything that might emerge.

It was several hours later that the party from the Academias Celestia and Everia arrived on the scene on receiving the call from the WCPD. Leading them were the two headmistresses, Scarlet Dae and Silviana Melaidhrin. They arrived on a flying stone disk, piloted by Scarlet's geomancy. The wide, uniform platform of rock descended to the ground near to where Sonya and the other officers were waiting.

Scarlet stepped off first, her crimson cloak fluttering around her feet in the breeze. She adjusted her hat as she glanced worriedly at the swirling portal. "Which one of you is Agent Ballifrey?" she asked.

Sonya lifted a hand in greeting, "Headmistress Dae, I presume? I'm Sonya."

"Just call me Scarlet," Scarlet replied, taking Sonya's hand and shaking it. "Let's get down to business. What the hell happened here?"

Behind Scarlet, the rest of the party of mages alighted from the platform. There were four of them in total. Scarlet and Silviana, as well as two more specialised mages - Scarlet's ghostly partner, Katarina Blackheart, and an ally of the Academies, Kastner or 'The Mystic' amongst his own circles.

Silviana joined Scarlet in speaking with Sonya. The headmistress of Everia tilted her own hat at Sonya politely, "Sonya, I believe we've met briefly before? You are Elaina's sister, aren't you?"

"That I am, Silviana. But this isn't time for casual chatter. I was hoping that you could tell me what the hell happened here." The WCPD Agent sighed, shaking her head, "I've got no idea. Eyewitnesses are saying the air just sort of... exploded. There was a sickening feeling in the air briefly, but compared to the anomalies that were happening a month ago, it was tame. Considering this is the first tangible product of anything like that..." She shook her head, "I have no idea what I'm working with here. I'm a cop, not a wizard or a scientist."

Folding her arms, Scarlet nodded, "Alright. We'll see what we can, do, but I make no promises."

The blonde mage turned to the others, gesturing, "Let's get to work." she instructed.
