Introduction
It doesnโt bother you much, most likely because your familyโs been keeping it on the down low. Or, maybe not. Maybe youโre a television star and youโve been moving elephants with your mind for all the money and the fame and the ladies. Either way, the general public either doesnโt know that youโve got powers or they donโt believe you. As it turns out, there are no government agencies trying to dissect you like a frog. So youโve just been chilling, going to school, reading minds, working at the burger shop, and/or setting ants on fire with your laser eyes. You know, the normal stuff.
Until you receive The Letter.
The letter invites you to a special new boarding school thatโs been set up for psychics just like you! The New School for Extraordinarily Gifted Individuals, herein nicknamed as Psychic Academy.
So you pack your bags and off you go. Youโre kind of praying that itโs not a huge government conspiracy to trap you like a rat, but hey, itโs a chance to meet other people with your special, erm, โcondition.โ And you might learn more about your powers! So itโs all good, right?
The entire psychicโs academy โ dorms, classrooms, lounges, cafeterias, offices โ is contained within a sixty-floor skyscraper located in the trendy downtown of the expanding Eastmoor city. Youโre taken through a pretty standard three-day orientation, wherein you attend lectures and play awkward socialization games. As it turns out, Psychic Academy really is a nice and normal place for budding psychics to learn how to control their powers.
Then you wake up on the fourth day, and something is wrong.
Itโs too quiet.
Itโs almost like thereโs no one in the city.
No one at all.
But there are still people in the dorms. All the other students are there. However, the resident advisors are gone. The teachers are gone. And everyone else in the cityโฆgone.
The students are alone in the abandoned city.
For some reason, the city is running normally. You have electricity and water. Cell phones work. The Internet works, although nothing is being updated or posted. Televisions also work, technically, although no programs are running.
Also, a strange tattoo of a star(s) has appeared somewhere on your body. Theyโve appeared on the other studentsโ bodies as well. Everyone has one, two, or three stars.
Oh yeah, there are posters tacked up in every hallway. Each poster is the same, and each poster has a particularly long message:
Welcome to the Mock Universe. We are an alien race known as the Peace.
You have been recruited for the defense force against a militaristic race of aliens. In your language, the name of this alien race is best translated as Spiders. They have already killed all life forms on twenty-seven planets.
Your planet is next.
We gave you special powers in order to fight them.
We have set some captured Spiders loose in this Mock Universe in order to see if the experiment was a success.
If you leave the city, you will leave the Mock Universe and thus cease to exist.
We have noticed that human society requires hierarchy. In order to combat internal conflict, we have organized the hierarchy of your society for you. People with three stars are leaders. Two stars means middle management. People with one star are followers.
If someone does not have a star, then they are an unwitting plant from the Spiders and must be killed immediately.
The first Spider attack begins at dawn.
Have a good day!
We hope that you survive.
But what does it mean? So cryptic.

4 AM. Cyrus stared at the harsh red light being emitted from the digital clock in the dark of his assigned bedroom. He had been trying to sleep for a few hours now, having set an alarm for 5 AM. The first Spider attack begins at dawn. How frustratingly non-specific. When was dawn, exactly? He rubbed his temples โ he had a throbbing headache. At this point, he might as well just give up on sleep, because there was just no way it was going to happen. Even if he did manage to somehow fall asleep, there was a risk that he might oversleep the alarm and still be sleeping when the attack began.
Cyrus had just come to this decision when suddenly a brash, loud, frighteningly familiar voice boomed over the intercom:
โHOW DOES โ WORK โ I โ BUT IF YOU โ OH, I GET IT! YOU JUST PUSH THIS BIG RED BUTTON OVER HERE. AWESOME! AM I LOUD ENOUGH? CAN EVERYONE HEAR ME?
HELLOOOOOOOOO! MY NAME IS BRIAR UNDERWOOD. I AM AN AWESOME THREE STAR PSYCHIC THAT CAN SET THOSE STUPID SPIDERS ON FIRE!
I HOPE I DIDNโT WAKE ANYONE UP OUT THERE! BUT YOU GUYS SHOULDNโT BE SLEEPING, YOU KNOW! MY BROTHER, CYRUS โโ
And suddenly all hope of pretending that he didnโt know Briar was gone โ โHE WAS ALL LIKE โWE NEED TO TRY AND GET SOME REST, BRIAR,โ BUT COME ON YOU GUYS, I MEAN, WEโRE UNDER ATTACK! DONโT YOU THINK SLEEP IS FOR LOSERS? DONโT YOU THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A MEETING? I THINK WE NEED TO HAVE A PLAN! I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY I WILL BE AT THE FRONT LINES OF THE BATTLE KICKING ASS, BUT LIKE MY BROTHER WOULD SAY, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN โโ
Cyrus had a headache, which meant that he really didnโt want to use his abilities. But Briar left him no choice. He opened up a mindlink, somewhat violently, snapping at Briar:
Dear brother, you really donโt need to talk so much about me in your amazing speech.
Briar had always fanboyed the mindlink ability. He gushed back, his thoughts so strong that it came across as yelling: IS IT AMAZING? REALLY? DO YOU THINK SO? DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL BE INSPIRED? I WAS REALLY NERVOUS, ACTUALLY, BUT IโVE BEEN TRYING SO HARD โ
Itโs wonderful. They will definitely be inspired. To punch you in the face. Now please wrap it up.
OKAY, BRO!
โANYWAY,โ continued Briar on the intercom, โI THINK WE SHOULD ALL HAVE A MEETING IN THE AUDITORIUM SO IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A MEETING PLEASE GO TO THE AUDITORIUM. IF NO ONE SHOWS UP, THEN I WILL HAVE TO SING 99 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL ON THIS INTERCOM THING. I LEARNED THAT LAST SUMMER ON A ROADTRIP WITH MY BROTHER. HE LOVES THAT GAME. 99 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL, 99 BOTTLES OF BEER โ 98 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL, 98 BOTTLES OF BEER โโ
And suddenly Cyrus recalled mental trauma that he thought he had previously buried deep, deep within.
Briar stood on stage in the auditorium, clutching at the microphone. A fair amount of people had shown up, which, to be honest, he hadnโt expected. It looked like about a hundred people, which would easily be half of the students. He felt skahy and nauseous, which was an inappropriate reaction for a three star leader. He had to buck up.
Briar spotted his brother standing in the crowd, his hands in his pockets and a familiar frown on his face. Briar waved enthusiastically. His brother gave a lukewarm wave in response.
โOKAY,โ said Briar into the microphone, pausing briefly in order to clear his voice. โTHANK YOU ALL FOR COMING. SO LIKE I WAS SAYING ON THE COMM THING, I THINK THAT WE NEED A PLAN. IS THIS LOUD ENOUGH? CAN ALL OF YOU HEAR ME? SO DOES ANYONE, LIKE, HAVE A PLAN?โ
He looked nervously around the crowd. Somewhere, crickets chirped.
Fortunately, his big bro stepped on stage to save him.
โWhat my brother means,โ said Cyrus, taking the microphone from him, โis that, in the event of an attack as described on the posters,โ
What did Cyrus mean? Of course there was going to be an attack!
โIn case of such an event,โ continued Cyrus. โWe need to know everyoneโs abilities. For example, my brother here can start fires. Like that girl in Firestarter.โ Briar thought he was much cooler than her, but whatever. โI can read minds, and I can also open mental links between myself and other people. So, hopefully, that will be useful in terms of communication during an attack. I mean, obviously we wonโt have the intercom or microphones then,โ finished Cyrus, chuckling to himself. Briar chuckled along, somewhat nervously, feeling like heโd missed the joke.
What a farce. Wednesday had been getting plenty of beauty sleep before that loud, droll boy had just about burst her eardrums. Looking around, Wednesday could tell that many of the other psychics were scared. It was because they had been given inferior abilities. No matter how the battle went, Wednesday did not have to worry. Nothing could pierce her force field. She would live, that was for sure.
And now โ now she had a chance to stake her claim in the group. Stars be damned. It was obvious that no one would follow that annoying little boy, regardless of how many stars he had. But his older brotherโฆhe had a calm, confident presenceโฆ
Wednesday had to stop that immediately.
She raised her hand. โExcuse me,โ she said, pushing past the people in front of her and climbing onto the stage. She motioned for the microphone.
โMy name is Wednesday Williams,โ said Wednesday into the microphone. โIโm able to create force fields. I should be able to keep a lot of people safe in the event of an attack.โ Provided that theyโre good at groveling, snickered Wednesday mentally to herself. โHowever, Iโm not so sure that we need to focus on individual abilities right now. Isnโt the question of stars more important? I understand that this boy has three stars, but how many stars do you have?โ She looked meaningfully at Cyrus.
โThatโs not โ the star system isnโt โ I donโt think thatโs what we should be focusing on right now is โ I mean, in the event of an attackโฆโ Cyrus trailed off, his voice suddenly small.
Just as sheโd suspected. He didnโt have three stars. Hell, judging by how nervous he suddenly got, he probably didnโt even have two stars. A one star jockey. Or even a no-star plant. Who the hell did he think he was, getting on stage and giving everyone orders like that?
โI only have two stars,โ said Wednesday. โBut Iโm not claiming to lead us, either.โ She could feel Cyrus glaring at her, which she gleefully ignored. โI think what we need is all of the three stars on stage, here, now.โ
She handed the microphone back to Briar, who looked very, very confused.
It doesnโt matter who they officially call โleaderโ. Soon enough, people will realize that the only way to survive is to befriend me and to get included in my force field.
And that will be true power.

"Right...i'm up then." Jake quickly patted a hand against his bed , causing the whole thing to crack and snap as it changed in to the shape of a recliner chair which Jake quickly got out of and started to kick around his floordrobe for some clothes. After putting on his usual attire minus a shirt (Who needs -shirts- in a alien invasion?) Jake coughed again , throwing his smoke against the ground and watching it turn in to a bottle cap before he walked out. Briefly walking by the auditorium and seeing what looked like the start of a power struggle he laughed and kept walking , passing a few other students that were in there own little groups of panic and worry on the way. "Right...they can do that."
Jake made his way to just outside the school and grabbed a poster off the wall , reading it over carefully for the umteenth billion time. Looking out at the dead city and giving a sigh before he walked to the front gate. "And I will do -this-." With that Jake put both his hands firmly on one side of the gates ground , raising large but otherwise not very well shaped stone blocks to act as the first line of defence against the 'spiders' and more importantly Jake had no idea what exacly these spiders -were-. He had visions of eight legged aliens carrying high tech plasma pistols and gravity rays so he figured a five foot stone wall around the school would make a good vantage point and better cover.
Giving a heavy sigh and wiping sweat from his brow he looked aroudn the school and groaned. "Gonna take bloody forever to make just one god damn wall around this place. I hope those people hurry up with their little squabble." With that Jake got back to trying to get the school prepared the only way he could think of , by defending it with a bulky stone circle wall spanning around the school , a slow and tiring process but he was not about to give up and look weak , more for his own prides sake then anything.

He nodded his head, as the powers came into question, Fire and mind-links. He tapped his chin, but before he could react a girl popped up and when she said she could create force-fields he nodded alittle more, that would be good for helping in defense. Then she made Cyrus uncomfortable, and asked for all three stars on stage. He looked around and groaned rubbing the back of his neck his hands sliding into his pocket as he stepped up onto the stage. He sighed letting Briar keep the mic as he cleared his throat. "Well, young people and mild adults call me Luke, and I can harness the water in the air, or in another's body to create ice, and since Wedensday asked I'm one of the three stars here." He crossed his arms alittle. and looked to the girl. "You maybe right we do need leaders but Cyrus is right, we need to know more about people not leaders, or are you trying to gain more power then you have..?" He smirked alittle and looked down at her. "Maybe you need a time out?" He asked wagging a finger at her. He looked out towards the people that had gathered. "Look don't care what level of star you are, we need to know your abilities if we're going to survive we need people for defense and offense." He said calmly and then with that he looked at the ones on stage. "Now I've said what I think I'm getting of the stage now..thanks" He said and stepped off the stage and found a seat somewhere in the crowd.

It was an odd thought for someone who had not gone to sleep at all that night, but a quick scan over the white powdery wonderland his room had become and the twenty dollar bill sticking out of his nose, unused, made it a bit less odd. James had been startled out of his concentrated snorting by some prepubescent kid who happened to get a microphone. He took a big coke free sniff and found that Briar, because that was apparently his name, to be the tangy sweetness of a rather nervous joy. He was happy, but it seemed to mask a nervousness and some form of adoration for someone. James stuck his tongue out and canvassed the air around him, something was wrong with the taste.
It's that mind linker again.
He scrunched his nose up and put his money back in his pocket. He didn't like the way linked minds tasted. They were too odd, mixtures of flavors that should never be mixed. It felt like he was drinking orange juice after brushing his teeth, but in his brain. James stuck his tongue back in his mouth and did his best to scoop some of his special treat back into its baggie and shove it in his pocket. His room had a little bathroom with a sink and toilet and he went in there to splash some water on his face and adjust his camp shirt. After a few iterations of buttoning and unbuttoning in different patterns James settled on completely unbuttoning it and leaving his scar prominently displayed. You're a bit of an attention whore. he thought to himself Well you're a bit of shut the fuck up. he answered to himself.
He decided on an extremely baggy pair of black pants, with a belt to keep them from sagging because he was an adult and didn't need anyone seeing his Scooby Doo underoos. On his bed, covered in a fine sheen of sweat, was one of the posters and James grabbed it on the way out. He'd already read it and had already realized that he could do absolutely nothing when it came to fighting with his powers. By the time he'd showed up to the auditorium that Wednesday chick had already taken to the floor and started talking about how important stars were and with that, he saw, was his cue to sit in the back and start tasting.
First was the telepath, he tasted of bitter shame and bland resignation. He had a slight spark of hope in him that made his mind a bit more palatable but he seemed mainly stable as far as mental stability went. So he was boring. Next he went for the filthy kid, sniffing and taking deep breaths in his general direction. He smelt like tangy and spark. He would be fun to mess with, all those bundled up loyalties and hair trigger tempers, it's like walking through an emotional minefield. He stuck his tongue out to lick his lips and caught a few others coming down the halls.

As he walked down the hallway, his barefeet feeling the high quality business carpet of the building, he noticed another student who looked like he was a rockeer proceed pass the door to the auditorium and then outside. This peaked Jimmy's curiosity and he walked up to the door the student had walked out of and peered through the small window in the door. It seems he was attempting to raise a wall of some sort. A wall wouldn't do much against a spider, but it might provide some cover if people had long range abilities. Presuming that these spiders had weapons, of which Jimmy highly doubted. He decided to leave the man to his devices and walked into the auditorium.
Jimmy took a spot on the wall next to the door, standing at the back of the room. He listened to a few people speak, it seems a girl with force field powers wanted to identify all of the three star people. He much preferred the elder of the Underwood brothers plan. To have everyone identify themselves so we know what we are working with. They should still have about two hours till dawn, though he wasn't sure it applied in the Mock Universe. The three star cryokinetic Luke's view point was very rational and calm. It made the most sense as he agreed with Cyrus. He wished to voice his support of the idea and to give suggestions. "I agree." Jimmy projected over the auditorium. He then made his way to the stage, still talking. "My name is James Murdock, but I want all of you to call me Jimmy." At this point Jimmy reached the stage and jumped on top of it nimbly. "I have the ability to create physical objects with my mind by manipulating the energy my brain gives off called psionic energy. I can create weapons, shields and platforms. I have also been trained since I was 12 in the art of Ninjitsu. I know how to fight and I want everyone to know that I will do my best to support everyone here. Because of the situation we have been thrown into, our survival is centered on each other. We came here strangers, but in order to survive, we must become an army and a family." Jimmy's voice boomed throughout the audience. "Wednesday here has suggested bringing the people that the Peace have deemed leaders, but leaders are only as good as the men and women who follow them. We will need all of you to say your name and power so we all know how we can use your skills to our advantage. No need to come to the stage to say it, you can do it from your seat." Jimmy then looked out over the audience.
He waited a few seconds, but no one said anything. "Look, I know your scared, I'm scared too. I was told yesterday that I was the product of an alien experiment and that today at dawn, giant alien spiders will be coming to kill us. If you are not frightened by that fact, even if you are confident in your abilities, you are an arrogant fool. Everyone feels fear, but my sensei taught me something about fear. The key to fear is not to hide it or forget about it. The key is to face it, with all of it's reality and accept it. Accept this fear, and it can not control you. If you believe that will not work for you, then think about this. The flyer said some will be released today to combat us......some. Not a squadron, not an army, some. There at least 100 of us in this room alone, I doubt everyone came to this meeting so there may be 100 or more through out the building. All of them have powers, ready to combat this threat. Our fear is that of what we don't understand. But, there are over 200 super beings in this building, out there are some big spiders. Why should we fear facing them? The powers we posses are told to be wielded only by the gods!" Jimmy yelled out over the crowd. He then turned around and made his way over to the young bot Briar. He knelt down so 6'2" form was closer to his. "This kid can set things on fire with his mind! I'm guessing if he can do it with a house, he could do it to a spider, right? i realize i have yet to tell you what star rank I am, well, I am a two star. I don't believe peace saw the true potential of leadership in everyone here, but I truly believe they did get it right in the few. I mean, look at Briar. I bet a lot of you are thinking 'How the hell did this kid get to be a three star?' Well, you're all here aren't you? If he hadn't gone over the intercom, most of us would still be sleeping. You might have died in your sleep this day if it it wasn't for this boy." Jimmy said in a serious tone glaring over the crowd.
Jimmy was honestly surprised with himself. He was simply stating what he had been feeling and it seems people were listening. He stood up from where Briar was and made his way toward the end of the stage. "Look, I'm no leader, I simply want to do my best to make sure everyone survives. That does not entail me leading you, so yes, we will need a few leaders to organize all of our talents, but how can we expect to do that if they do not know our talents?" He then made his way far stage left, which was right to the audience. "I have an offensive ability. I suggest that everyone with an offensive ability state it and move your self to this side of the room. Defensive on the opposite and support in the middle. This is simply a suggestion to make it easier on the leaders. I am going to shut up now, and let you think for yourselves." Jimmy then crossed his hand behind his back and stood there silently. Internally he was freaking out, his sensei always said he had potential to help people in more than just fighting, all he had to do was say what he felt and he did. He didn't know if anyone would listen to him, but he put in his incredibly long two-cents worth and that was good enough for him.

Tyli was desperately trying to find some way to shut off the intercom, she already had a headache, giving the time she had laid around thinking about that message about the spiders coming at dawn, before she fell asleep. This certainly wasn't what she had in mind when she first came here. She banged against the intercom for a moment when she couldn't find the way to shut it off. She did found herself wide awake, probably happened by trying to find the off button. She listened to the end of the message, asking them to come to the auditorium. She rubbed her eyes and slowly picked up her coat, zipping it close. She bound her hair up and left the room. Making her way to the auditorium.
She entered the room about the time that Wednesday was holding her speech about how important their stars where. She was finding that she didnโt exactly liked the way the girl talked to that guy. The guy , which she could name Cyrus because it had been all over the intercom, that obviously only tried to help and state some kind of plan. She watched how Jimmy came onto the stage to speech as well. Asking everyone to tell their names and their power. When he went quiet the whole room was completely still. Causing him to continue talking about being scared and stuff. Taking the boy as an example for the fact that everyone must have some special something, power of just character, that might be able to help. In this case the fact the boy woke everyone by yelling over the intercom. He might be right in the fact that they couldโve been killed, but it still didnโt make it less obnoxious. It went quiet again.
She stood up with a smile on her face, she couldnโt help but smile at the long speech that was given mere moment ago. โI am Tyli Hoff, nice meeting ya all!โ it was currently hard to catch her without a smile, after all she was meeting tons of new people and some seemed really nice or cute. โI can put up illusions to fool someoneโs nose, eyes and ears. I can also fake the touch but only on small illusions. Iโm still practicing with the large ones. And Iโd like to point out that I think Cyrus and Jimmy are rightโ she smiled and said back down again. She was hopping up and down a little, excited to hear who would introduce themselves next.

As Jimmy was Wednesday asked for the three stars, she froze the room. All noise stopped, the people all stopped moving and she could easily walk up to the stage. Once there she unfroze everything. The sudden noise hurt her head for a second but she was standing by as a boy came up and suggested to separate the people into categories.
"What abut those with both?" She said. Walking up to the microphone she aid to everyone:
"My name is Sarah Ravencroft and I'm a three star. My powers are on the molecular level. I can slow down, stop or freeze if you will, and speed up something's molecules until they separate, resulting in combustion or melting. So you see, my powers are both offensive and defensive, so where do they go?" She cleared her throat.
"I like your idea. All of your ideas. We should get every 3 star up on the stage and get the room organized. offensive, defensive and those with both. Then split them into teams to protect different areas. Every team will have so many offensive, so many defensive, one with both and a three star leader. TYhis is just my idea, please elaborate on this if you like. I'm just concerned about how much time we have left. That being, very little. " When no-one moved she blew up one ot the lights from above them.
"Move! We have not got a lot of time!" They started moving to their areas. Satisfied, she stepped back.

Aaron then went on the stage and asked for a microphone. He got one and started talking. "Hello my name is Aaron Black. I am a two star and would like to make a quick announcement. You see, my power is to look on into the future so if I could just get some quiet and concentration hopefully I will be able to see what the Spiders will look like, what weapons they'll have, and where they will go first." When he said that it started getting quiet. "Okay now before I start I would like to say I believe every ones idea is great but hopefully if I can find out where the Spiders will attack then we can split up into groups and take them on. I believe that each group should be lead by a three star and have a two star or more still there in order to take over just in case you know...they die," Aaron said. After that he got a seat on the stage, sat down, and said, "Okay I'm going to try to get a vision now so please be quiet..."
(OOC: @LovelyLissey could you PM me or say in the OOC what the Spiders look like, what equipment they have, and/or where they are going first and how many please. If you do't think we should know just tell me and my character will say that the attempt failed.)

And soon he started pulling his hands towards himself with his eyes closed , forming what looked like a small grouping of stone spikes that came just from the foot of the wall upwards at a angle. He had gotten the idea from old japanese history books he had read , stories of samurais using pike walls to impale horses or charging soldiers. When Jake was satafide with his work he grinned and took a few steps over to work on the next group of spikes. "I wonder how the power struggles going?" Jake didint really care but he was already exhausted and he needed to destract himself some how. While a couple of the people watching him were cute enough to catch his eye he was too far away to really be distracted by them. "Stupid wall...stupid aliens...could be flirting right now but noooo...Jake had to get the idea to make a giant spiked -wall-."

Aaron's eyes popped wide open. "Sarah you can un-freeze them I got a vision." Aaron exclaimed. On the outside Aaron looked calm but on the inside he was bursting with joy but then he remembered that one or more people here can tell your emotions so he went back to his normal all around calm self.
Aaron then got his microphone and announced to every one that he had a vision. "This is what happened in my vision people; I saw about twenty giant tarantulas, around the size of a human however, they were more wide then tall. Their legs had visibly large and powerful muscles so do not let them kick you. I saw that they didn't attack the infrastructure of the building. Also I believe they were sniffing so they probably can smell us. Last but not least they are all over the city." Aaron stated.

Sarah dropped her hands and the room unfroze. Finally. I was starting to get a headache.
"This is what happened in my vision people; I saw about twenty giant tarantulas, around the size of a human however, they were more wide then tall. Sarah walked up to microphone. "Might I suggest that we make haste in our attempts to block up the area. They will be coming soon and we don't know how effective our powers are against them. I've had a new plan. All with defensive powers could stand in a line around the entire building putting up defenses. If they get the feeling that they are weakening they can retreat, not everyone is as powerful as others. The offensive can fire away at the spiders and once they are eradicated from the immediate area, we can split up and search for the remaining few. How's that sound? Any objections?" Sarah turned and started towards the steps to the stage. Her knee high, black leather, high heeled boots made considerable clicks on the floor. Every step: click, click, click, click She started down the middle of the people with her arms folded and could not wait to change out of her dress.
When she got to her room, she threw open the drawer and chose a pair of blue jeans and a large red top which could be disguised as a dress. Plus underwear, of course. She went into the bathroom and stripped, then went for a quick shower before changing again. After this was finished, Sarah made her way back to the auditorium to see what the verdict was.

It was just about 5 AM, and the first rays of sunlight hit the desolate city streets. Dawn.
The Mule Spiders drifted in sleep together, sharing fevered dreams about mating and eating. They were connected in one psychic hive mind, although they also retained the ability to differentiate themselves. In the background of their shared sleep, a soft song played. To the Mule Spiders, the effect was the same as a human child being sung to sleep by a sweet lullaby.
Suddenly, the song changed. The song only reached full volume for a small host of Mule Spiders located near the Alien Academy skyscraper, but all the Mule Spiders heard it, distantly, although they recognized that this song was not for them, that the command was for other different Mule spiders.
This new song was louder. Angrier. But familiar. And the message was clear:
Kill.
Normally, once given the Attack command, the Mule Spiders would spread out in search for blood and flesh to ingest. However, this place was strange. They could only smell blood in one specific place โ in a single tall structure. There was a lot of food there, and the Mule Spiders were hungry.
The selected Mule Spiders began to move from their alleyways, from behind their lampposts, from the subway underground, to the tall skyscraper full of human flesh.
None of this had turned out quite the way Briar figured. People had started arguing about stars and abilities. And Briar definitely didnโt like that goth-looking girl who was talking down to his brother. And then this pretty lady in high boots had frozen everything, allowing for a guy who could see the future to have a vision about the impending Spider attack. Well, at least everyone seemed a whole lot more organized now. People had separated into two groups that were either offensive or defensive, and they were actively talking about their star rank and their respective ability.
Which, by the way - of course Briar was offensive! He started to run to the group, but a hand grabbed him by the back of his shirt.
โDonโt be reckless, Briar,โ said Cyrus, frowning. โYour powers are useful and you belong on the front lines, but donโt overdo it. You have to know when to run away.โ
Cyrus had called his powers useful! Awesome! But what did he mean by, โknowing when to run away?โ Where was he supposed to run away to, exactly?
Briaropened his mouth to say an enthusiastic โSure, bro!โ but before he could get the words out, there was static on the intercom. Then, a particularly soothing voice came on. It was hard to tell whether the voice was masculine or feminine. It sounded like everything that was good in the world โ pop rocks, his mother reading to him when he was little, the perfume of the girl that sat behind him in history class, his father taking him on fishing trips, comic books, Cyrus ruffling his hair. The voice also sounded a little bit dead.
โGood morning, test subjects. This is an announcement from the Peace,โ said the voice. โIn a few minutes, your first test will begin. All of you will be graded, and the grades will be announced on your television sets at 7 PM today. There will be penalties for poor grades and prizes for good grades.
Happy testing.โ
And then the voice was gone.
Cyrus looked even more worried now. โBe careful,โ he said, stepping away towards the defensive group.
Anyone who went to the president's office and the intercom would find that no one had ever been there.
Before Cyrus joined the other people with defensive abilities, he tapped the guy named Jimmy on the shoulder. โI liked your speech,โ he said. โRight now, you make the most sense to me. Youโre probably in the offensive group, right? Can you do me a favor?โ Cyrus pointed to his hyper active brother, who was trying to talk to five different people at once. โMake sure he doesnโt die, please.โ
With that, Cyrus stepped into the ranks of the defensive players. He stood next to the Wednesday girl, who he already really didnโt like.
Cyrus closed his eyes. This was going to involve an extraordinary amount of concentration and energy, and he was already tired and had a headache. But it had to be done. With a grimace, Cyrus opened a mindlink with everyone in the room. He wasnโt going to bother with the hundred or so other people who had opted out of the meeting. If they had wanted other people to help them out, then they should have showed up to the meeting. Briarโs approach may have been daffy, but his idea was sound.
This is Cyrus from before, broadcast Cyrus everyone to the room. Iโve opened a mindlink with all of you. If you think of trying to talk to me, and think a thought in a full sentence, it should be able to reach me. DONโT ALL DO IT AT ONCE right now. You might knock me out. I can send out a broadcast like Iโm doing right now. I can also pass important messages between people, if they need it. After the battle, I will close the mindlinks.
Please be careful. While I have the channel open, any time you think about communicating with me, I will start to receive your full sentence thoughts. Likewise, if youโre thinking only in moods or images, I wonโt receive it. Since weโll probably be under stress, try to get your thought across in as few words as possible.
Only use this for urgent messages or emergencies. You canโt kill me by overdoing it, but you can knock me out for a day or two.
Please ask me any questions in person, the normal way.
WOW BRO, gushed Briar back. DID YOU REALLY JUST OPEN A MINDLINK WITH ALL THESE PEOPLE? THATโS SO AWESOME! WOW! YOU CAN DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING โ
โฆBriar, did you listen to anything I just said?
The Mule Spiders approached the building, only to encounter a five-foot wall. They twittered amongst each other in high-pitched screeches. Obstacle.
Then the first Mule Spider vaulted over the wall, and that was that.
The attack had begun.

Aaron was with the defensive group and was awaiting orders for what he should do. But then he got a vision...it flashed into his head. "You guys June just killed ten spiders but she looked extremely worn out so she left. It looks as though there is only ten left! We can get through this." Aaron stated pleased.

Jake panicked , running back to the building and cursing as he was chased by the spiders , smacking his hand against the door on his way in and causing the revolving entrance to suddenly change in to a rotating saw blade that managed to sever one of the spiders in half. "IF ANYONE COULD KILL THE ONES CHASING ME THAT WOULD BE -GREAT-!" Jake was yelling and running in to the main area of the first floor , turning around he had given himself enoguh time to crack his knuckles , waiting for one to get close enough for him to impale it like he did the wall jumper. Jakes plan was iether to raise ground spikes like normaal , wall them off in a hallf way or turn a near by desk in to a spear. Still , here he was , ready to defend people he didint even know because he thought they still werent ready.

He saw Briar run into the offense line but he grabbed his arm. "Woah, buddy. Your with me, special orders." He winked at him and took off between the lines and made a beeline towards his room, which was down the hall a ways. He turned down a few hall ways, keeping a pace that he felt Briar could handle, they then reached his door. He stopped and turned to Briar. "OK, now, I need you to guard me while i dress, then we are going straight to the front lines!" With that, he ran into his room. He un-dressed and as quickly as possible put on his Ninhakujo. He then dawned his mask and walked out of the door. He looked down to Briar. "Let's go."
Jimmy sprinted down the hallway, hoping he hadn't lost Briar, when he came upon the same rocker guy from earlier, holding what looked like a spear and a spider was racing down the hall towards him. Jimmy created glowing shuriken and took off towards the creature. He threw all of the shuriken into it's eyes, it screeched in pain. An odd colored puss was leaking out of it's wounds, it stank, really bad. Jimmy had no time to lose though, so he created a Ninjato that glowed, jumped over the spider, looking like an upside down T, and decapitated it. He then landed in the same position on his feet. He then turned around and looked at him through the eye opening of his mask. "Come on! Everyone is mobilizing to the front lines, you can come with us, we're going to need everyone." After saying that, he turned around and took off down the hall way towards the exit.
Instead of going straight outside, he decided to go up one more floor, when they got to a large window over looking the fight, Jmmy broke it and turned to Briar. "Okay, Briar, I need you to be our mortar. I want you to stay up here and rain fire down on our enemies. Basically, stay up here and blow up some crawlies. We're all counting on you Briar, I know you won't let us down." With that, Jimmy jumped out of the window.
While Jimmy was still in the air, he created a glowing kusarigama and wrapped it around the neck of the spider and pulled, decapitating the spider. He used the momentum of the pull to fling himself deeper into the fray of the battle. It seems they were doing well, some people had chosen to saty in the auditorium shooting there powers from a safe distance, but most were in the fray. He decided to wade past the wall and faced the on coming spiders. Still wielding the kusarigama, he began to swing it, it's speed growing. He then stopped running, and stood in place as the spiders scurried closer. Jimmy's heart beat slowed and he was finally calm, when that happened, the blade of the kusarigama increased to that of a large scythe blade. Jimmy then started to run towards the enemy and began slash down spiders like a scythe to wheat. Legs and guts flew into the air all around Jimmy, but he did not stop swinging.
He had killed 9 of the in-coming spiders, 3 had slipped past him. He decided to go back and wait with the others for the next wave. He leaped into the air and began making platforms for him to jump off of so he stayed in the air. He noticed a crawly had cornered three people, one was holding it back with water, but it would be upon them soon. He hopped over towards them until he was standing right above the spider. He looked down and formed a large guillotine blade in his hands. He then cut off the platform and dropped down onto the spider, cutting it in half. After it had cut the spider, the blade shattered, so had his kusarigama. Each of his wepons had a hit limit so he had to pay more attention to that. He walked over to the three kids to see if they were ok, but the upper half of the crawly had startted to move, so he created his ninjato, drove into the spiders skull and twisted. hen it stopped kicking he made sure that they were still ok and made a bridge for them to go back behind the wall with the others, after they had crossed, Jimmy jumped over and looked around, there were only a few spiders left in the courtyard. He then leaped into the airr and made a platform to have a better vantage point to see the next wave coming. hey were about 21 seconds away. "We can do this." Jimmy said to himself.

though that wasn't the end of it, several others started to appear he moved off towards where he could make out another person(Jake). His pace was slow; and he really had no worries the immediate area around him was at exactly zero; spiders wouldn't be able to handle the cold. He smiled at Jake alittle. "Hello there" He said calmly and froze the area around his hands ending in spikes. He would help this guy out. Jimmy had seemed to want everyone to partner up; so he'd stick with him. "Hey, let me know if it get's to cold for ya alright?" He slowly began to make it colder in the area around them, first thing they needed to do was to slow them down. He was starting to get winded; this much usage of his powers in one burst, it was completely exhausting.

Jake breathed out and caught the sight of his breath , starting to shiver he quickly reformed his leather jacket and turned to Lukes back , looking at the front entrance that had spiders in it. "Jesus , colder then a penguins third nipple. I take it thats your thing then." Jake threw his spear up , catching it in mid air and then throwing it forward at one of the spiders who quickly jumped over it and was gonig for Luke. With a grin Jake put his palms against the ground , raising a giant stone first that hit the spider and then raised it in to the roof , effectively squishing it. "Ironic."
Jake laughed and hunched forward slightly. Between the wall , spikes and now the fist he was running low on juice. He eyed back at Luke before turning his attention back to his own batch of the creepy crawleys. "How long do you think we can keep this up? I'm already running on low from earlier." With that Jake clapped his hands together (apperently a fan of full metal alchemist.) His coat hugging to his body and turning in to steel , covering his face , neck and head in general with a mask with two eye holes. With a laugh Jake pulled his hands apart and he had blades coming from his fists much like Lukes ice ones. "Then again , dont gotta use your powers to stab!"
With a roar that could only be described as blood thirsty Jake ran to the front hall , throwing a bladed punch in to the mouth of one of the spiders before gonig savage on him , his armor was working for now and the blades were just tearing the spiders apart. It helped that they couldint crowd him , the single lane hall way made for a great choke point so Jake basicly was just fighting one after the other instead of a group.

The second climbed over the corpse of the first making him groan. "No feelings for your dead? Your not much different then the arachnids from earth are ya?" He asked, though not expecting an answer, as it got ready to jump at him he held up the hand without a spike on it, concentrating on it as he froze the head of the thing and pitched the spike from his other hand shattering the head. Two down, and yet hundreds more. He growled slightly. "you know what I'm done, really I am very much..." He held up his hand and the area in front of him began to grow cold, and everything in it's way began to freeze. "Hey guy you might wanna move, If they wanna keep coming I'm going to give them the cold shoulder treatment." The choke point as it appeared was growing colder by the second, he was going to freeze everything in there and hopefully with the floor frozen maybe knock the creatures off balance as well.
Though the major drawback was, he was literally running on fumes now, the ice hallway was going to be a major setback for the spiders, and might give him time to catch his breath, well in theory anyway the pessimistic point-of-view would be that even with it frozen over the frozen corpses of the spiders in the hallway would only allow them to find a way to climb across.
(OOC:alright I'm posting the ooc right in the post cause I don't wanna any misconceptions about this post, it's growing colder but Jake will still have time to escape the immediate area, unless he wants to keep playing hero xD)

She walked to her carefully, looking around as she did so. โNeed some help getting back?โ she then asked the woman, since she seemed to be going in the direction of the cafeteria. It was the least she could do to make herself a little more useful. She tried not to think about those aliens too much, they were quite scary and she would regret leaving the cafeteria if she did think about them. She guessed that this was the girl that killed ten spiders, considering the fact that the rest had left in groups and nobody else was announced. She could hear the sounds of spider crawling closer, she wondered faintly how long it was going to take before the spiders reached the cafeteria. She putted an illusion of a human guy at the end of the hallway, walking around a bit, it looked real and it certainly smelled room. It should give them some time if spiders where indeed coming to where they now where.

A few seconds of stunned silence later, licking his lips and loving the taste, James realized that everyone had scattered and that there were rumbles and explosions coming from places he couldn't see and he took a deep sniff. The spiders smelt like hunger. Deep, aching hunger that stabbed James's stomach and made his everything run cold. Goddamn I hope I don't have to get near one of those things. He took another sniff and he felt an especially poignant source of hunger skittering right above him, then it went towards the windows on the floor above him and crawled down the wall. Every bit of it's slavering hunger was visible to him now and the peals of rage shook off of it as it raised one large, hairy, bristling leg and brought it down onto the glass.
SMASH it went, and the pieces flew into the auditorium.
SMASH it went, and it fit half of itself through the window. It's cavernous mouth was open and it's venom soaked mandibles shook around the air hungrily. Such a deep, panging need ran through the beast.
SMASH it went again, for the last time, and it scraped its carapace through the hole it had made. The spider landed on the linoleum with a thump and skittered back onto its legs. It was horrifying. It was a dirty brown colour, with a thick black carapace under it's dirty matted fuzz. All twelve of its eyes were focused on him. It had thin lacerations across its body from the window, and a shard of glass had embedded itself into one of its legs. "Oh god."
James ran. He had nothing else he could do. He wasn't built for this, he was built for social conflict. He could hear skittering as he ran, the sound of chairs being knocked over by overly hairy legs and a soft screeching noise as the spider got closer and closer. James grabbed a chair by its back and suddenly swung back, chucking it directly at the face of a spider and cracking it against its mandible. The spider veered to the side to avoid the chair, and barreled into another set of chairs. With it's legs caught in that space between the seat of the chair and the back of the chair, and little streams of creamy nervousness leapt off of it and into James's nostrils. He swung again with the chair, and heard something along the lines of a solid crack at the impact.
"Oh god, oh god." He took a few steps back, and watched the wriggling carapace attempt to leave the pile of chairs it had trapped itself in. He only did so for a few seconds before retreating into the hallway. He had a new game plan. Go to his room, lock the door, and board up the window stat.

Seph sat up and turned to face the remaining monsters who were only a couple of feet away from him. Not enough time to aim, so i just gotta shoot! The young psychic glared and yelled the command several times. "Metsu! Metsu! Metsu!"
HIT!
MISS!
"Shit!" he hit two, but missed the third. The last survivor launched itself into the air as it's buddy was smashed like a pancake. Seph gritted his teeth, grabbed the sword and jabbed it upward just as the enormous spider landed on him. The sheer force of the creatures jump knocked him back against the floor. He twisted the hilt of his weapon aggressively and the erratic squirming mass atop of him became still. He sighed, kicked the giant bug off of him, got up and yanked the sword out of the beast with a disgusting splurt! "That's what you get you ugly bastard!" he yelled at the carcass, kicking it. "Got guts all over the blade...yuck!" he mumbled turning to go back down the hallway towards the other offensive types.
When he made it back two of the older psychics had frozen the area where the spiders were coming through. It was freezing. Seph could see his breath forming in front of his face. Apparently they were having no problem. His next move was to head out into the courtyard where he knew the real battle was starting, but he wanted to get a better view of what he was about to face, so he headed up some stairs where he ran into a short kid with white hair. The boy was standing in front of a busted window. Seph looked out of it. "Perfect view" he muttered. He narrowed his eyes, focusing. "Metsu!"
